Join the Teaching English program in San José, Costa Rica with International Volunteer HQ and contribute to language education while immersing yourself in vibrant urban life and rich cultural surroundings. Volunteers support local schools and community centres by assisting classroom teachers, leading English clubs and conversation sessions, helping with lesson planning, and providing support to children and youth in under-resourced communities. Your hosted volunteer experience includes airport pick-up, a full orientation, shared volunteer house or homestay accommodation depending on placement, two meals each day and 24/7 support from the local team. You receive pre-departure guidance from your IVHQ Program Manager together with access to training tools to help you feel prepared for your role. Programs begin every Monday. You'll experience social and environmental sustainability in action. We'll tackle questions like: - How did Costa Rica become a renowned example of success in environmental conservation? - What does it mean to move the world in a sustainable direction? - Is Costa Rica a fitting role model for sustainable development in larger nations? Along the way, we'll do some hiking, waterfall swimming, relaxing in hot springs, and a lot of other fun group activities! Get hands-on experience in the fields of pre-med and public health on this medical teen travel program! Aid in the improvement of Costa Rica's public health through clean water projects and educational outreach. Work side by side with physicians and healthcare professionals to expand your knowledge and understanding of these fields. Amazing and rewarding service work is complemented by explorations of natural wonders; fly through the lush forests of Costa Rica with a zip-lining tour and more! Students collaborate with local community members and partners on vital sanitation and hygiene projects, which have been selected by the communities on this student service program. They help with the construction of health centers and other service projects. In addition to service work, Global Works participants also take an active role in assisting medical professionals in rural health visitations. Explore an 18-day adventure in Costa Rica, a global leader in biodiversity. This program is for high school students who are passionate about wildlife conservation. It provides hands-on experience in one of the world's most ecologically rich countries. Assist scientists at the Monteverde Institute, protect endangered sea turtles, and volunteer at a wildlife rehabilitation center. Explore the rainforest on a nocturnal hike, contribute to reforestation for migratory birds, and zipline through the cloud forest canopy. With 20 hours of service learning, this adventure blends environmental stewardship with cultural immersion, equipping you with skills in conservation and global citizenship. While Costa Rica has a very high literacy rate and has a very strong tourism industry, there are also quite large impoverished and at-risk communities. This project aims to send volunteers into these communities to help them achieve their goals. There are a variety of projects in different fields volunteers can choose from such as helping with women’s issues, child welfare, health care or education. The internship provides volunteers with a practical and professional experience needed for a career in social work or a similar field. To make sure that participants are meeting their goals there will be bi-weekly meetings with a supervisor and a final evaluation of their performance. This project highly encourages interns to have an intermediate level of Spanish to help enhance their internship experience.

Seeds of Change seeks to train young biology students in comparative microbial bioinformatics to give them a leg up in this burgeoning field. Students study microbial bioinformatics because microbes are central to all environments on the planet, drive biogeochemical cycles, and perform functions vital to all life forms. Before students travel to Costa Rica, they are introduced to the Joint Genome Institute’s (JGI) Integrated Microbial Genomes and Microbiomes (IMG/M) platform, a gateway to sophisticated genome databases and analysis tools. The five interactive pre-trip modules present a seminal case study that applies the fundamentals of genetics (DNA structure, replication, transcription, translation and gene regulation) to an insect-bacteria symbiotic relationship. Once in Costa Rica, students work with a partner to generate their original research question and use their new-found expertise in microbial bioinformatics to develop a poster of their research. Students engage in off-site activities that include guided hikes in the cloud forest, a zipline adventure in the cloud forest, a coffee tour, a horseback ride in the cloud forest, and a sea turtle marine research experience.

The lively beach town of Santa Teresa is world famous for surf breaks across beaches pristine, uncrowded and seemingly endless. After surfing and sunbathing are over for the day – and Spanish lessons and surfing! – the town comes alive with funky surf shops, cafes, restaurants and nightspots for every taste and budget. Your experience will be based at ‘Jakera Jungle Surf Camp’ where we have created a jungle paradise complete with swimming pool overlooked by a rich tropical forest bursting with wildlife including red squirrels, howler monkeys and tiny magical hummingbirds. We are a 5 min walk from the cool cafes, bars and shops that line the 6km stretch of road and beach that make up Playa Santa Teresa/Playa El Carmen. This program starts on the first and third Sunday of each month, so clients can ‘settle in’ before the program proper starts on Monday morning. This language program includes everything you need to learn, practice, and improve your Spanish in a truly idyllic location. The Standard Spanish Program accepts students aged 18 and above, from complete beginners to advanced speakers. Whether you need to improve your Spanish for professional purposes, prepare for an exam, or are just learning for fun, our team will create the environment you need to succeed. Receive four hours of group Spanish classes per day, Monday to Friday, from 9 am-1 pm. Group classes, with a maximum of six students, are led by professional teachers. In the afternoons, explore the nearby national park and numerous beaches. All of our programs include a complimentary program of activities, access to a swimming pool, snorkels, surfboards, and a tour office to assist you in booking other activities. Throughout the program, you have the option to stay with a local host family for maximum Spanish immersion. The alternative option is an 'on-campus' accommodation at the popular Hostel Plinio.

This program is ideal for those who would like to experience the warm waters, waves, and expert instructors here on the beaches of Nosara/Playa Guiones, Costa Rica. Whether you're a novice or advanced-level surfer, our program combines one of the most versatile surf breaks in Costa Rica with our intensive Spanish program. In this program, students can choose between our 10 or 20-hour Spanish program, along with two professional surf lessons per week. The Spanish program will take place on our campus, and the surf lessons with Bodhi Surf at the beach. Bodhi Surf's instructors are CPR and lifeguard certified and will introduce you to the ocean and surfing in a safe and fun environment. For those more advanced surfers, Bodhi Surf also offers surf excursions to nearby breaks.

Our Sport Tours offer players aged 13-21 the unique opportunity of going abroad for competitive sports, community service, and adventure excursions. Depending on your level, you will compete against local high school, university, and/or club teams.
