Syracuse was founded in 733 BC and grew to be one of the most prominent cities of the ancient Mediterranean world. The seat of Greek Kings, Roman Governors, a Byzantine Emperor, Arab Emirs, and Norman and Spanish Lords, its archaeological and architectural wealth is justly renowned. A warm Mediterranean climate and a lovely coastline setting in southeastern Sicily, rich in UNESCO World Heritage sites, complement this historical and cultural heritage. The fertile countryside surrounding the city produces bountiful fresh produce for the open-air markets of Syracuse, and the local cuisine is one of the best in Italy. API is excited to offer Summer Mediterranean and Field Studies at Syracuse Academy in Sicily. Located in the city center near the world-famous archaeological park and museum, the Syracuse Academy offers a broad array of English-taught humanities, social sciences, and STEM courses. Every class includes experiential learning activities such as fieldwork and visits to relevant cultural and historical sites, making this the ideal program for anyone seeking a meaningful and engaging international experience.

What does it take to restore nature in landscapes shaped by centuries of agriculture? In this immersive program based in rural Central Italy, students explore how ecosystems can recover in working agricultural lands, from olive groves and vineyards to rewilding mountain pastures. Fieldwork, excursions, and community engagement offer a firsthand look at the ecological and cultural dimensions of restoration, as well as the conflicts and cooperation between wildlife conservation and food production. Students learn how restoration is unfolding on the ground, navigating both EU-level policy and the lived realities of farmers, rangers, and rewilding advocates.
