The Real Uganda's volunteers assist our partners with a variety of empowering community-based activities. Volunteers split their time between these locally requested interventions: Public health and clinical work: Volunteers work in rural clinics providing testing, treatment, counseling services, and prevention education. Nutrition, vegetable gardening, and community sanitation programs are also ongoing. We aim to support rural public health in Uganda. Teaching and childcare: Volunteers work in rural classrooms, choosing what ages and topics to teach. Art and sport are the most popular. Traditional teaching in Uganda is rote learning and memorization. We aim to encourage teamwork, fun, creativity, literacy, and general knowledge in primary schools. Organic farming: Volunteers work alongside women and community members to maintain gardens. Journey into the heart of the East African wilderness by exploring three of Uganda’s famed national parks and making an invaluable contribution to protecting these animals. Discover Corps offers this unique experience where you trek with a veterinarian to assist in the collection and lab analysis of gorilla data from stool samples and learn more about the vital preservation work being done by the Gorilla Conservation Camp. Volunteering in Mukono offers a unique opportunity to give back to rural communities through participation in grassroots projects. On top of this, you will gain an insight into the daily living conditions of locals. As a volunteer, you will experience traditional Ugandan life and take part in daily activities. These include helping in construction and building, visiting elderly villagers, teaching children outside their classrooms, assisting in setting up vegetable gardens, giving youth health talks, teaching English to high school students, feeding animals, and organizing health outreach programs. Ssamba Foundation operates in rural communities where dirt roads turn to sticky mud when it rains and into dust when the climate is dry. The main transport is Boda- Boda bikes, which share the road with animals and bicycles. Like a big part of Uganda, these communities have households struggling to meet their basic needs; much less putting their kids in school. Their main sources of income include small-scale animal rearing, selling fruits and vegetables, brickmaking, and other manual labor jobs.
