Drop out rate is very high, and only 53% of students enrolled in primary schooling continue onto secondary schools. Access to education and under-resourced schools is at the core of the challenges. There are simply not enough teachers for the number of children. Volunteers strengthen the capacity of teachers and contribute to supporting and caring for vulnerable children in Morocco. It improves the children’s prospects for the future giving them a more solid education. It also gives impoverished children compassion and a sense of hope. We provide opportunities to serve in Meknes all year round through local NGOs, including women’s empowerment programs, at-risk youth homes, and therapy centers. Throughout your program, you will create a portfolio of assignments and activities, including individual reflective essays, logs of hours, weekly journals, and group discussions. You can volunteer or intern at a childcare facility in Tangier, Morocco. Some facilities are nonprofit and cater to socially disadvantaged children, while others are private kindergartens of high standards. Around 20 single mothers and their toddlers live at the Sisters of Calcutta Kindergarten and Home. Approximately 10 more single mothers bring their children daily from 8 AM to 4 PM. Volunteers interact with the children, mothers, and street children. DARNA operates an open house for children and adolescents in the Kasbah of Tangier. Volunteers assist in the facility's library and interact with the children and adolescents. You can combine activities with tasks in the five other centers run by DARNA in Tangier. At the private French/speaking kindergarten "Le Manège," children aged 3 months to 3 years are introduced to the French language. Teachers foster their independence, socialization, and creative development through play. The children also celebrate and prepare for celebrations of French and Moroccan cultures, such as Christmas and Aid-Al-Fitr. Internships are possible for you at Le Manege if you are considering a career in childcare.

Volunteer in this program from people and places, which supports a charity that runs girls' boarding houses near secondary colleges and lycées in the High Atlas Mountains. They provide selected girls from remote villages across the region the opportunity to continue their education. While staying in these boarding houses, young Moroccan girls gain access to secondary education and the chance to fulfill their potential in an environment that promotes academic study and social understanding. The goal is to make a difference in the current lives of these girls, thus changing their future.
