A Guide to Volunteering Abroad in Malawi
Locations
Malawi is one of the smallest countries in Africa, and it’s population of 16 million citizens makes it one of the more densely populated as well. Located in the southwestern region of the continent and bordered by Zambia, Tanzania, and Mozambique, about one third of the country’s total area is occupied by the beautiful Lake Malawi. The volunteer abroad in Malawi should take advantage of their geographical location to explore the vast nature and rich wildlife which the region offers.
Lilongwe, the capital and largest city with over 1 million residents, is one of the most popular destinations where to volunteer abroad in Malawi. Sitting on the banks of the Lilongwe river, the nation’s capital is a bustling central hub of culture and administration. Blantyre, Malawi’s second largest city, is commonly considered the economic nucleus of the country in complement to Lilongwe’s political influence.
Because the majority of the population continues to live in rural areas and rely on subsistence farming, it is also popular to volunteer abroad in Malawi far away from an urban environment. Villages and smaller towns such as Chikwawa and Mangochi can provide volunteers with an intimate immersive experience in Malawi’s more remote rural areas.
Projects & Placements
Volunteer projects in Malawi come in all different shapes and sizes, allowing international aspirants to lend a helping hand in the country for as short as just a couple of weeks or as long as a full year. Global programs tend to pair with local organizations while placing volunteers on projects that are designed on-the-ground within each community for the most productive results. There is a continuous demand for a steady volunteer force throughout Malawi to put in the hours and help these projects take effect.
Because the country suffers from a lack of wealth and social services, the most popular area in which to volunteer abroad in Malawi is usually within the realm of community service. Placements working in the overarching fields of education, healthcare, and human rights can help bring valuable resources to local citizens that they otherwise might not have access too.
Development efforts can also take a toll on the environment, and so it is also a popular choice to volunteer abroad in Malawi within areas such as conservation, reforestation, and wildlife surveying. Malawi is a very biodiverse country, and volunteers can make a further positive effect by working to protect local ecosystems under the threats of human expansion.
Costs & Affordability
Because it is a Least Developed Country (LDC), on-the-ground living costs in Malawi will understandably be quite affordable for international volunteers. Major expenses such as housing, meals, and transportation are further often encompassed in your upfront program fees. For more information about ways to meet the costs of your volunteer program in Malawi, check out our fundraising page.
Accommodation & Visas
Living conditions will likely be basic while you volunteer in Malawi, though this may vary significantly depending on whether you are placed in an urban or rural area. Homestays or other group living situations are typically the most common form of housing for international volunteers; as a general principle, expect to be made comfortable, but do not expect immediate accessibility of many luxuries such as hot water, internet, or air conditioning.
Volunteers from most countries will be able to obtain a visa upon arrival, though it is important to confirm beforehand with your program provider what type of documentation you might need. For more information in the meantime about Malawi’s visa policy toward your home nation, check out our Embassy Directory.
Benefits & Challenges
Help the Cause. Malawi is one of the world’s least developed countries, and the goodwill of an international volunteer force can go a long way in bringing essential services to the citizenry.
Embrace the Lifestyle. Malawi’s culture is renowned for its hospitality and warm love of life; as a volunteer abroad, you will learn more than you ever thought possible from your host country.
See the Sights. Lastly, Malawi is one of the most naturally beautiful places you will ever visit. Standing on the shores of Lake Malawi and taking in the scenery, it might prove difficult to bring yourself to return home!

Traveling half way around the world to volunteer effort, time and energy on marine conservation takes trust. GoEco delivered, far exceeding any preconceived expectations and hopes we had before arriving on Naifaru. The entire team provided thorough support, training and guidance so that we could participate, contribute and perform to our utmost potential. We left with a tremendous sense of achievement, accomplishment and countless unforgettable memories.

Hi guys here the feedback I sent to AOA:

Jule and Gércia are doing an outstanding job! The program was very well organized, and all questions were always addressed – whether directly related to the tasks or more general matters. I felt well supported at all times.

I especially want to highlight how valuable it is to have a local Mozambican staff member like Gércia on the team. She not only brings maritime knowledge but also shares important insights about local customs and culture – a huge asset!
When Jule was away for a few days with another group, Gércia took over the leadership of our group, smoothly managed any changes to the plan, and handled everything very professionally. You truly have a fantastic team, and that deserves to be appreciated!

Food & Meals
The food was consistently delicious – thank you, Brodie and the Tilak Lodge team!
However, after two weeks, I noticed that some meals repeated quite often. It would be great if AOA could give Brodie a bit more flexibility and resources to offer more variety in the menu. I'm sure with more freedom, Brodie could surprise us with even more creative and diverse meals!

Scuba Diving
The guides at Tofo Scuba were excellent – professional, experienced, and always supportive. Whether it was the Advanced Open Water course, ocean safaris, or fun dives, I always felt safe and in very good hands. They made every dive a great experience, and I appreciated their clear briefings, calm presence, and strong awareness of safety and the environment.

Suggestions for Improvement – Equipment
There is definitely room for improvement when it comes to technical equipment:
There are clearly not enough GoPros/underwater cameras for the volunteers.
The printer is currently unusable due to empty ink cartridges – and no replacements were available.
Coming from a technical/IT background myself, I was honestly surprised at how outdated and overused some of the devices are. One or two new laptops or computers would make a real difference and improve the workflow on site.

Final Words of Appreciation
I usually don’t give such detailed feedback – but Jule, Gércia, Brodie and the Tilak Lodge team, as well as Ross and the Tofo Scuba crew, all deserve a big compliment. Thank you for this valuable and enriching experience!
GoEco is the BEST!

I was a little uncertain about booking a volunteer trip with an organization I didn't have personal experience with, but wow! I'm thrilled I took a chance on GoEco. Their staff were incredibly communicative, helpful and supportive throughout the process - they patiently answered all my questions, guided me to a location that suited me and made sure I had all information I needed to ensure a wonderful trip. The Giant Tortoise Breeding Center volunteer experience in the Galapagos Islands was more than I could ever have imagined... filled with ideal balance of hard work, interesting learning, plenty of free time for diving/snorkeling/relaxation, connection with the local community and endless opportunities for Spanish practice. I felt supported by both GoEco and the IOI program. I'm already looking forward to my next GoEco travel opportunity.

The positivity and curiosity of a people who have very little materially, but are really very rich in their souls and unselfishness.
February 16, 2025by: Sarah SmithProgram: Malawi - Wildlife Rescue Center
1. Feeling that I was contributing to saving beautiful orphaned animals that would hopefully be released back into their own environment was incredibly uplifting, moving and meaningful. 2. Being able to experience the above and marvel at the effort and dedication everyone puts in with very limited financial resource. 3. Interacting with and Seeing, experiencing the endless joy, laughter, smiling faces of the children at the education centre, the positivity and curiosity of a people who have very little materially, but are really very rich in their souls and unselfishness.

My dream internship!
November 08, 2024by: Amanda Drobek - United StatesMy internship in Malawi was truly a life-changing experience (as cheesy as that sounds). I recently graduated with a degree in Marketing/International Business and I wanted to apply my skills in the real-world, while making a difference. This is exactly what I got to do. Using my academic knowledge, I was able to work on a variety of projects, take ownership of my tasks, and get involved wherever I wanted to gain insights in the organization. It was inspiring to see the impact my daily work had on the community and I'm proud of the accomplishments I achieved, including helping launch a disability center in a rural area. From digital marketing, to fundraising, to project management, to hosting events - there was no shortage of tasks and I got to try out different things in order to learn what I want to do in my future career. I'd recommend this internship to anyone that is ready to take lead on a project and build a portfolio (you must be self-driven and take initiative to get things done!). All this, while being based in an absolutely idyllic setting!! Malawi is a gorgeous country with beautiful landscapes and a welcoming culture. I was embraced by the community and living on the shores of Lake Malawi was like a dream. I would recommend any internship in Malawi to anyone looking to immerse themselves in a new culture and get involved with truly grassroots development work.

Unforgettable Malawi Adventure with HYCF
June 04, 2024by: Daniel Franks - AustraliaProgram: HYCF: Malawi Volunteer Experience
I recently had the privilege of exploring Malawi with Helping Your Community Forum (HYCF), and it was an experience like no other! As a volunteer, I worked in a law firm during the week, but the real adventure began on weekends. Alongside other volunteers from the medical department, we embarked on thrilling safaris and explored the beauty of Malawi. One of the highlights was our visit to Nkhatabay's Butterfly Space Eco Lodge, a serene oasis surrounded by nature's splendor. The lodge's warm hospitality and stunning views made our stay truly unforgettable. HYCF's dedication to community development and volunteer support is remarkable. Their organization and guidance ensured a seamless experience, allowing us to focus on making the most of our time in Malawi. If you're considering volunteering in Malawi, look no further than HYCF! Their program offers a unique blend of community service, cultural immersion, and adventure. Get ready to create lifelong memories and make a positive impact in this incredible country! Highlights: - Meaningful volunteer work in law and medicine - Unforgettable safaris and explorations - Warm hospitality at Butterfly Space Eco Lodge - Seamless organization and support from HYCF - Lifelong memories and new friendships Thank you, HYCF, for an experience that will forever hold a special place in my heart!

I had the chance to participate multiple times in lion capture and collaring and release
December 31, 2023by: FreyaProgram: Malawi - Wildlife Rescue Center
While undertaking biodiversity monitoring research volunteering, I had the chance to participate multiple times in lion capture and collaring and release. I was involved with the team where we darted particular lions, performed brief health checks, documented important lion identification information and put on collars. I was mostly there to help and take notes but on one of the days, I got to do the eye drops by myself which was really cool.
