Due to an increase in deforestation and the struggles between man and wildlife, many of Malawi's wild animals are losing their natural habitats and are often found injured or in severe distress. The project offers a safe haven for these animals, assisting in their recovery and rehabilitation and, wherever possible, releasing them back into the wild. Those that cannot be released find a permanent home in large natural enclosures where they can roam freely. The reserve currently has about 200 animals, including birds, reptiles, lions, monkeys, and antelope. Volunteers will help with a host of different tasks and projects while volunteering at the wildlife center. Alongside animal care professionals, volunteers may be able to help with various aspects of rehabilitation, including the possibility of assisting in clinical procedures or the release of animals back into the wild. Animal releases at the center are often more successful than not, and this is due to the high level of effort and expertise that goes into every aspect of the rehabilitation and release process.

Malawi is one of the smallest and yet also one of the most beautiful countries in Africa. This nation's people are known for their contagious smiles even in the face of the dire conditions that they often have to live with. As it is one of the least developed countries in the entire world, there are several opportunities for you to become a volunteer in Malawi. Whether you are all excited about volunteering in education or you would like to learn more about the various wildlife volunteer projects, you have come to the right place. Given the low life expectancy of the Malawi people along with the high infant mortality, your work as a volunteer in Malawi can really make a difference to the lives of the local people. Also keep in mind that even the Malawian government relies heavily on foreign aid to address the needs of its people. As such, there has been a longstanding volunteer tradition in Malawi, which makes this country a great place for you to engage in worthwhile, meaningful charity work.

Join us in Malawi, where you'll support our industry-leading wildlife rescue and rehabilitation work. Whenever possible, we release animals back into the wild where they belong (which means we operate a strict hands-off policy where possible). You’ll have a chance to help care for over 200 animals on-site, (currently) including rescued monkeys, baboons, several kittens, owls, duikers, and more. Activities include behavioral observations, preparing enrichment activities, troop integrations, preparing feeds, cleaning enclosures, and performing animal husbandry tasks. As Malawi's leading conservation organization, our work spans wildlife rescue and welfare, education, advocacy, justice, and research. The Lilongwe Wildlife Centre is regarded as one of the top sanctuaries in Africa, holding accreditations from the world's most respected animal welfare bodies, including GFAS, PASA, and Born Free. In October 2023, Lilongwe Wildlife Centre won the GFAS 2023 Outstanding International Sanctuary Award.

In the breathtaking landscape of Liwonde, you focus on monitoring endangered species. Observe iconic animals such as lions, cheetahs, hyenas, and vultures. Collect valuable data that feed directly into local conservation strategies. The project includes monitoring and research work that helps fill critical knowledge gaps and support national and regional conservation efforts. Experience unique moments as you learn more about the social dynamics of groups and individual wildlife. These include impressive events such as the takeover of a lion pride by a new male, the training of an adolescent cheetah in hunting, or the fascinating interaction between vultures and other scavengers at a carcass. Even if the project team does not track elephants or rhinos, you are likely to see them during drives through the park. Immerse yourself in this unique opportunity to actively shape the future of Malawi's wildlife and learn about the wilderness!
