<h3>What inspired you to travel abroad?</h3>
<p>I was inspired by the opportunity to make a difference in underserved communities. I wanted to step outside my comfort zone, experience a whole new culture, and contribute to a cause that would leave a positive impact on a community while also helping me grow personally and professionally.</p>
<p>Traveling has always been a part of my life, but being a part of something bigger, helping others, really pushed me towards this project.</p>

<p>Freepackers stood out because of their hands-on, community-focused approach. The Construction and Renovation project in Bali offered the perfect blend of physical work, cultural immersion, and real-world impact.</p>
<p>I wanted to help improve infrastructure for schools and public spaces, and this program aligned perfectly with those values.</p>
<h3>What was your favorite part about Indonesia?</h3>
<p>Ubud, Bali’s cultural heart, became my favorite spot. The blend of art, spirituality, and natural beauty made every day feel magical.</p>
<p>From the terraced rice paddies to traditional Balinese dance shows, I felt constantly inspired. But the warmth and kindness of the local people made it truly unforgettable.</p>

<h3>What made your experience abroad extraordinary?</h3>
<p>What made it extraordinary was working closely with locals to bring positive change to their communities. Knowing that I was part of building or restoring essential spaces like schools gave my trip lasting meaning.</p>
<p>Not to mention the friendships I made and the chance to grow in a new culture, it became unforgettable.</p>
<h3>How did the local program staff support you throughout your program?</h3>
<p>The local coordinators were always available, ensuring we were safe, informed, and confident in the tasks we were doing.</p>
<p>They offered training on construction work and helped us adapt to cultural differences. Their support created a welcoming and productive environment where we always felt part of a bigger purpose.</p>
<h3>What's one thing you wish you would have done differently during your time abroad?</h3>
<p>I wish I had taken more time to explore the local villages and connect deeper with the community outside of the work site.</p>
<p>While I loved our project, I now realize how much more I could’ve learned by simply asking questions, listening, and engaging with locals during free time or after daily work.</p>
<p>I had friends do a similar project, who said they traveled with locals and learned so much about the local day-to-day life.</p>
<h3>Describe what a typical day in your life abroad looked like.</h3>
<p>Mornings started with a community breakfast with all the volunteers, followed by planning sessions and/or training with our coordinator.</p>
<p>After lunch, we traveled to a local site for construction work, such as painting, carpentry, or landscaping.</p>
<p>We returned in the evening to relax, give feedback, or provide information about the next day. Each day was hands-on, fulfilling, and built on teamwork.</p>

<h3>What did you enjoy doing in your free time abroad?</h3>
<p>During free time, I loved exploring markets and enjoying traditional Balinese food. I also went to many temples that were unique and different in their own ways.</p>
<p>Weekends gave us the chance to see rice terraces, take yoga classes, or relax at local cafés. The island offered endless cultural and natural treasures that made every free moment feel magical.</p>
<h3>What type of accommodation did you have? What did you like best about it?</h3>
<p>We stayed in a Volunteer House in the village of Pejeng Kaja. Rooms were shared with 4–8 volunteers and had amenities like fans, hot water, and Wi-Fi.</p>
<p>What I loved most was the sense of community. It is very different from back at home. From all the meals, stories, and laughs shared daily, it is easy to bond and feel at home.</p>
<h3>What is one thing every future participant should know about your program before their program begins?</h3>
<p>Flexibility and adaptability are key. Tasks may vary based on what the community needs most at the time.</p>
<p>You might be painting a school one day and building a wall the next. Being open-minded and adaptable ensures you get the most out of your experience and contribute in meaningful, needed ways.</p>
<p>Be respectful of all the cultural differences. Just because it is different from yours does not mean it is wrong.</p>

<h3>What do you feel the biggest benefit of traveling abroad is?</h3>
<p>The biggest benefit is perspective. Being abroad opens your eyes to how different and similar we truly are.</p>
<p>Having lives across the world, yet having so many similarities. You grow more empathetic, more adaptable, and more aware of global issues.</p>
<p>The best part is learning new ways of thinking and being.</p>
<h3>Now that you're home, how has your time abroad impacted your life?</h3>
<p>Since returning, I’ve become more grateful, grounded, and globally minded. Volunteering in Bali taught me that small actions can make a big difference.</p>
<p>I now value community and simplicity more, and I’m motivated to stay involved in service both locally and internationally in any way I can.</p>
<p>I look forward to returning with a different outlook than what I initially went with.</p>
<h3>What does meaningful travel mean to you?</h3>
<p>To me, meaningful travel means making a positive impact while gaining a deeper understanding of the world.</p>
<p>It’s about giving as much as you take—learning from the people and cultures you visit, and contributing something real in return.</p>

<h3>What inspired you to travel abroad?</h3>
<p>After my studies, I really wanted to extend my knowledge and have a wider vision of environmental and social issues around the world.</p>
<p>I wanted to learn from changemakers who were making a big positive impact within their communities. The biodiversity of Southeast Asia has always attracted me, so I thought it would be the perfect area to find thrilling opportunities.</p>
<h3>Why did you choose Gili Shark Conservation program?</h3>
<p>Gili Shark Conservation program was ticking all the boxes:</p>
<p>-an intense diving schedule</p>
<p>-daily scientific workshops about different topics in marine conservation</p>
<p>-a team of ocean enthusiasts dedicated to their projects</p>
<p>-a center located in the middle of a beautiful island surrounded by clear water</p>
<p>What I loved was that I could feel how much knowledge I would build from passionate scientists on land and underwater.</p>

<h3>What was your favorite part about Indonesia?</h3>
<p>Travelling to Indonesia was the best decision I could make. Indonesian people are so friendly, and they made me feel at home from the beginning.</p>
<p>Everyone is trying to make sure you’re able to make the best memories possible. I spent memorable nights singing and dancing with my local friends in some of the most beautiful places I had ever seen!</p>
<h3>What made your experience abroad extraordinary?</h3>
<p>The people I met in Indonesia truly made my experience extraordinary. I always felt safe and welcomed, and everyone around me always made sure I was happy.</p>
<p>Being abroad on your own can be very challenging as you are away from everything you know, but Indonesia made me feel at home. I will forever remember my time spent with Gili Shark Conservation!</p>
<h3>How did the local program staff support you throughout your program?</h3>
<p>The local staff were amazing! We were living in the research center headquarters, so we spent a lot of time together, even after work.</p>
<p>Mira, Joe, Anto, Fayssal and Nila were always making sure that we had smiles on our faces. They were not only people taking care of us. They all truly became friends!</p>
<h3>What's one thing you wish you would have done differently during your time abroad?</h3>
<p>I wish I had dedicated more time to exploring Lombok while I was on Gili Air. I dedicated a lot of time on the island, resting after the long days of diving and learning.</p>
<p>If I had to do it differently, I would spend some weekends on the mainland to explore more waterfalls and trek more! I am not sure I will come back to this area of the world so I wanted to make the most out of it. But we cannot do everything at once!</p>

<h3>Describe what a typical day in your life abroad looked like.</h3>
<p>6.30 am: Wake up and slowly get ready for the day</p>
<p>7:30 am: Eat an amazing breakfast (with yummy vegan pancakes)</p>
<p>8:30 am: With the team, I would go to the dive shop to get my gear ready, then briefing</p>
<p>9:00 am-1:00 pm: Various diving adventures</p>
<p>1:00-2:00 pm: Lunch and then back to headquarters</p>
<p>2:00 -5:00 pm: Workshops and data analysis</p>
<p>Evenings: Time to watch the sunset on the beach and go for dinner!</p>
<h3>What did you enjoy doing in your free time abroad?</h3>
<p>I really enjoyed spending time exploring the surroundings. I had spent time going to Lombok to explore the cities and trekking in waterfalls.</p>
<p>I went sailing in South Lombok to discover the so-called "Secret Gilis." Also, I spent a lot of time relaxing at the spa or doing yoga classes on the weekends!</p>
<h3>What type of accommodation did you have? What did you like best about it?</h3>
<p>I stayed in the 4-bed dorm and it was the best dorm I ever slept in. I am used to staying in hostels, but this shared room was definitely different.</p>
<p>It was super clean (the staff cleans it every day), we had AC, the furniture was really cute, and we even had shark toys next to our beds.</p>
<p>It was really spacious, and I felt super comfortable staying there.</p>
<h3>What is one thing every future participant should know about your program before their program begins?</h3>
<p>Once you come to Gili Shark Conservation, it's really hard to leave! This program is great for ocean enthusiasts who love learning new things and participate in many different projects.</p>
<p>The schedule is quite intense, so be ready to do a lot of things underwater and on land. The team becomes a family so you might leave tears on the way back.</p>
<h3>Would you recommend your program/provider to others? Why?</h3>
<p>I would definitely recommend this program to anyone looking to learn more about marine conservation! First because Gili Air is such an amazing place to dive, with clear water and such diverse marine life.</p>
<p>All the projects are led by the research center and are really exciting. Everyone is dedicated to helping you build your knowledge and skills while still having so much fun.</p>

<h3>What do you feel the biggest benefit of traveling abroad is?</h3>
<p>For me, the biggest benefit of traveling abroad is that it shifts your perspective on a lot of things.</p>
<p>By meeting new people, discovering environments, and being accustomed to new cultures, you are learning so much in a short amount of time and extending your vision and knowledge about the world. Traveling abroad will definitely make you grow.</p>
<h3>Now that you're home, how has your time abroad impacted your life?</h3>
<p>Back home, I realised this time abroad had such a big impact on my life.</p>
<p>By experiencing different lifestyles, constantly adapting to new environments, and meeting a lot of people from different backgrounds and nationalities, I feel now that I have a way bigger understanding of the world and its inhabitants.</p>
<h3>What does meaningful travel mean to you?</h3>
<p>Meaningful travel means traveling with a purpose! I never really liked traveling just to spend time in tourist attractions. I like to spend my time doing something that I like and getting involved in community work.</p>
<p>That's why, for me, it was so important to learn about marine conservation in the Gili Islands because I knew the conservation issues happening there.</p>

<h3>What inspired you to travel abroad?</h3>
<p>After a few years of living and working in France and Africa, I wanted to discover another culture and enjoy island life for a while. I had heard many good things about Indonesia and Indonesian people and felt like going there to experience the beauty and peace of the place. I am passionate about diving and with my certification of scuba diving instructor in hand, the Coral Triangle seemed like a perfect region to explore.</p>

<p>Passionate about the ocean and scuba diving, Gili Shark Conservation seemed the perfect place and program to learn about ocean conservation while being underwater every day. It is the perfect balance between spending time discovering a wide variety of topics and practicing scientific and conservation diving.</p>
<h3>What was your favorite part about your host country/city?</h3>
<p>The peace and quietness of the Gili Air island, the kindness of its people, the beauty of the ocean and beaches, and the magic of the sunsets in the sky every day. There is a very peaceful vibe and warming energy everywhere on the island, spreading a sense of serenity and safety that is very easy to cherish.</p>
<h3>What made your experience abroad extraordinary?</h3>
<p>I enjoyed the full immersion experience on the island, experiencing multiple diving and on-land adventures every day. The lifestyle of the Gili Air Island is particular in the sense that it is very different from what most people coming from abroad are used to.</p>
<p>No cars, no pollution, no traffic..." “Slowly" is the word used most around and it is quite easy to adapt to that rhythm and get addicted to it!</p>
<h3>How did the local program staff support you throughout your program?</h3>
<p>I received support from A to Z from my travel organization to the schedule plans adapted to my interests and areas I wanted to focus on, to the logistics around the dives. I learned a lot from the staff in marine conservation, scientific diving through all the underwater surveys (roving, permanent transect, RUV, fish ID, coral health index, Coral Watch surveys...), and conservation diving. It was great to benefit from the knowledge of the local staff who knew their way around the dive sites like the palm of their hands as well as all the marine species out there.</p>

<h3>What's one thing you wish you would have done differently during your time abroad?</h3>
<p>I wish I had come here sooner! I think it is very important to be open to discovering the local culture and to connect with the people. Being around simply as a foreigner would be a shame, I believe making the effort to explore the culture and experience the local lifestyle, trying to spend some time with local people, by learning the language for instance, and being curious is key to a good experience.</p>
<h3>Describe what a typical day in your life abroad looked like.</h3>
<p>We start the day with a briefing at breakfast to discuss the diving program of the day. Then we head up to the dive shop by the shore and leave for the first dive of the day, conducting surveys on fish, sharks, and turtles or doing some coral restoration.</p>
<p>We return for our surface interval, drinking coffee, preparing our gear for the second dive, and getting into the next briefing. The afternoon is dedicated to data input on turtles, sharks, and indicator species, remote underwater video watching, and coral growth analysis using various software. We also conduct one beach clean-up per week that all the volunteers join.</p>
<h3>What did you enjoy doing in your free time abroad?</h3>
<p>Never enough scuba diving! Also freediving, snorkeling, drinking fresh juice watching the sunset on the sand, testing a maximum of restaurants, trying Indonesian food, going to the beach, taking some self-care time in the spas, or just biking around the island to enjoy the magical vibes of the place.</p>

<h3>What type of accommodation did you have? What did you like best about it?</h3>
<p>I was staying at the Gili Shark Conservation headquarters villas in the North of the Gili Air island. It was a very beautiful and quiet place, it felt like home! The staff was the kindest, the bungalows very well furnished, and the shared kitchen was very convenient with access to homemade food and drinks. Breakfasts with vegan pancakes, homemade jams and peanut butter, fresh fruits, and delicious coffee were definitely what I preferred to start the day with!</p>
<h3>What is one thing every future participant should know about your program before their program begins?</h3>
<p>You won't want to leave! The program is tailor-made for each participant, depending on their interests, time, and motivation. Everyone will find their happiness doing what they love as everything is possible. From simply enjoying a holiday diving and learning about conservation to turning into a dive professional or going through a career switch, it is up to each participant to build their program.</p>
<h3>Would you recommend <a href=https://www.goabroad.com/providers/gili-shark-conservation rel="" target="_self" class="link"><ins>Gili Shark Conservation</ins></a> to others? Why?</h3>
<p>100%, I think the specificity of the Gili Shark Conservation is that it provides learning opportunities on a very wide range of specific topics. From turtle ID, shark research, tropical reef fish ID, and data collection, to various techniques of surveys, and coral restoration training. There is a great balance between workshops and presentations, and scientific diving.</p>
<p>One of the added value of the program lies in the flexibility it provides for all participants, depending on the areas of interest, commitment, length of stay, and level of scuba diving. The team is very competent in teaching and skilled in diving and the whole program is very well structured and organized.</p>

<h3>What do you feel the biggest benefit of traveling abroad is?</h3>
<p>I believe that traveling is a great way not only to discover another culture and meet people but also to learn about yourself. Going far, and leaving your zone of comfort to jump into the unknown is a great asset for personal development.</p>
<p>It is by learning how to feel comfortable with being uncomfortable that you build yourself up, by being challenged and saying yes to opportunities and experiences that you would not have thought about before traveling. My advice would be to take that big step and explore the magic of the world around you.</p>
<h3>Now that you're home, how has your time abroad impacted your life?</h3>
<p>My stay with the Gili Shark Conservation has served many purposes, as much in terms of professional development than personal development. I have learned a lot about ocean conservation, through classes and diving, and it has always been fun and full of laughter. I have been very moved by the kindness of the staff and the magic of the place.</p>
<p>I felt like I stayed with those who became my family in a very peaceful environment. I have discovered a new culture, met incredible people, seen the most beautiful sunsets, and experienced breathtaking dives. Beautiful memories, knowledge, and skills developed, and fulfilled with gratitude!</p>
<h3>What does meaningful travel mean to you?</h3>
<p>Meaningful travel would refer to me experiencing local culture by going above the simple status of a tourist. It should not be only about going places but exploring, looking for and creating connections, experiencing new activities, and challenging oneself by jumping into the unknown to fully get a sense of a culture. Meeting people who are curious about what is important to them.</p>

<h3>What inspired you to travel abroad?</h3>
<p>I’ve always loved the ocean and wanted to learn more about marine life and how to protect it. Through my medical studies, I know that there’s a strong connection between human health and the health of our environment, and I want to better integrate this concept into my career. The tropical waters of Gili Air seemed the perfect place to do this, while also making friends, experiencing local life, and exploring the beautiful ocean!</p>
<h3>Why did you choose <a href=https://www.goabroad.com/providers/gili-shark-conservation rel="" target="_self" class="link"><ins>Gili Shark Conservation</ins></a>?</h3>
<p>I wanted to go somewhere where I’d be spending an abundance of time in the ocean. GSC offers two dives a day, four dives per week which is perfect. As I was staying for a month, the package also included my rescue diver certification, as well as the scientific diver and shark awareness courses.</p>
<p>Also, I wanted to learn about the marine life I was seeing, and what a day looks like as a conservationist. I listened to so many great presentations and was able to get involved with data analysis and science education. Furthermore, GCS is an organization that empowers local women through internships, coral catch, and much more.</p>
<h3>What was your favorite part about your host country/city?</h3>
<p>Gili Air has such a beautiful pace of life. It’s hard not to feel relaxed! But I think the best experience besides my time at GSC was discovering freediving on the weekends. The Pacific Freedive Academy runs amazing introduction, beginner, advanced, and master freediving courses that I highly recommend!</p>
<h3>What made your experience abroad extraordinary?</h3>
<p>As cliche as it might sound, it would have to be the people. I met so many kind teachers/ conservationists, and their passion truly inspires me. It was so wholesome to be surrounded by a group of thoughtful, positive, and like-minded people every day. I felt welcome from the moment I got there and was always well-supported.</p>

<h3>How did the local program staff support you throughout your program?</h3>
<p>Mira and the Villa Nangka staff were amazing and so friendly! We always had delicious breakfast, kombucha, and family dinners. And the Gili Shark team was super invested in making sure I had a great experience.</p>
<p>Maisy accommodated my interests and was very patient when explaining how to do things. And I always felt very safe while on the boat or in the water. Diving was always so much fun with Katon and Aris. They’d be sure to spot amazing marine life and were happy to go through any questions after the dive.</p>
<h3>What's one thing you wish you would have done differently during your time abroad?</h3>
<p>Spent more time with GSC! There’s not much I would change about my experience, but I’d recommend looking into the entry requirements for Indonesia as some of my friends had issues. For example, a tourist visa generally only lasts 30 days, and you have to have your departure flight booked before entering.</p>
<h3>Describe what a typical day in your life abroad looked like.</h3>
<p>Four days a week we would go diving, which meant breakfast and briefings at 7:30/7:45 am. Our first dive would be at 9 am, and the second at 11:30 am. These might involve coral restoration, roving surveys, turtle ID, or a dive against debris. The dive sites are all within about 20 minutes of Gili Air.</p>
<p>We’d get back to HQ around 1:30/2 pm and have lunch before starting work in the afternoons. Usually, we would be analyzing data from the dives that morning or creating social media content, but we’d often have a presentation by one of the staff members on an interesting topic eg plastic and pollution, sharks, coral, etc. After finishing around 5 pm, I might walk to the beach to watch the sunset or go to the gym before dinner. Some nights we’d all watch a movie or play games.</p>
<h3>What did you enjoy doing in your free time abroad?</h3>
<p>As I’ve already mentioned, discovering freediving was one of the best things I did! Other than that, there are great snorkeling spots, some good yoga studios, and plenty of nice restaurants. It’s a small island, and there aren’t a huge amount of activities to do, so I’d often just be hanging out with friends.</p>
<h3>What type of accommodation did you have? What did you like best about it?</h3>
<p>I was in a 4-bed dorm with its bathroom. It was cool, comfortable, and cleaned daily. I really liked sharing the room with other people and it was just a 5-minute walk to the beach.</p>
<p>There is a shared kitchen and living/ workspace outside which can get a little hot but you get used to it! There are always people around so it never gets lonely.</p>

<h3>What is one thing every future participant should know about your program before their program begins?</h3>
<p>I wouldn’t apply for this program if your only goal is to have fun diving. A lot of the focus is on learning the fundamentals of marine conservation and contributing to the program’s database. It’s also quite physically demanding depending on the tide you might have to carry your tank for 100m or so to the boat and back.</p>
<h3>Would you recommend your program/provider to others? Why?</h3>
<p>Absolutely! If you are passionate about the ocean and how we can protect it, you won’t be disappointed by how much you learn. The program is incredibly well organized and I always knew exactly what was happening. Moreover, GSC seems to empower the local community and make a lasting impact through research and advocacy.</p>
<h3>What do you feel the biggest benefit of traveling abroad is?</h3>
<p>Traveling takes you out of your comfort zone and provides the opportunity to learn so much about the wider world, as well as yourself. When I travel, I like to stay in one location for a long time so that I get a better understanding of what life is like there, and also contribute to the community in some way.</p>
<h3>Now that you're home, how has your time abroad impacted your life?</h3>
<p>Even before I left Gili Air, I was researching my next destination! I’ve found a few programs that integrate health and conservation which I am keen to apply for so I can keep learning. I want to bring this knowledge into my workplace and continue to advocate for environmental conservation. I also have a bunch of wonderful new friends I hope to stay in contact with, and maybe meet again one day!</p>
<h3>What does meaningful travel mean to you?</h3>
<p>I try to travel mindfully. For me, this means making environmentally sustainable choices (e.g. for accommodation and transit), respecting local culture and actively trying to contribute to the community. I’ve found that participating in programs like GCS brings me more satisfaction, personal growth, and lasting relationships than trips that only involve sightseeing (but both are important!)</p>

<h3>What inspired you to go abroad?</h3><p>After joining SLV.Global in Sri Lanka, I really wanted to travel to another part of the world and gain even more hands-on psychology experience while experiencing a new culture.</p><h3>Why did you choose SLV.Global?</h3><p>I chose this specific organization as it is specifically targeted at psychology and providing the opportunity to gain experience in the mental health sector which is an experience that I really struggled to find outside of this program.</p><h3>What was your favorite part about Bali, Indonesia?</h3><p>My favorite part about the host country was the sense of community. As I was living with a local family, I felt really welcomed by them and the entire community. We would then get ready for our morning project and head to our assigned meeting places before being taken to our first project of the day.</p><p>After all of the fun and hard work in that session, we would head back and have lunch, sometimes a full meal or just pick up a snack whilst preparing materials for the next project. We would make sure that we had everything we needed and then meet again for the afternoon project.</p><p>After a long day, we&rsquo;d return home where we have dinner with the homestay parents who ask about our day and plans for the weekend. Retire to our rooms or prepare materials for the next days sessions. Sleep and repeat.</p><h3>What did you enjoy doing in your free time?</h3><p>Free time on the weekends were spent going on various adventures&mdash; from shopping and indulging on food, to relaxing on beaches or spa tables, and even climbing mountains or doing other active stuff! There is an option for every mood.</p><h3>What was your accommodation like? What did you like best about it?</h3><p>My accommodation was basic, but not too basic. I was in a room of four where we all had comfortable beds with mosquito nets and a fan which was NECESSARY! We had a bathroom (with a western toilet) which we shared and generally had enough space between each other. You are not spoon fed but you do have the support of the teams both in country with you and in Head Office.</p><h3>Now that you're home, how has your program abroad impacted your life?</h3><p>Now that I am home, I was successfully accepted onto a Master's course in Therapeutic Counseling which I would not have been able to do without the experience gained. I also found myself more patient and compassionate when facing language barriers and use non-verbal communication a lot more to help me.</p><h3>Would you recommend SLV.Global to others? Why?</h3><p>I would unreservedly recommend SLV.Global to anyone with an interest in global mental health. Being able to work with vulnerable individual in another culture can be a hugely beneficial experience to those interested in pursuing Psychology as a career.</p>

Being able to take part in three different types of volunteering was great too.</p><h3>What were your favorite parts about Borneo?<span style="white-space: pre;">	</span></h3><p>The food, the people, the weather, and the scenery.</p><h3>What made your experience abroad unique?</h3><p>The fact that I was only 16 and was made allowed to volunteer abroad with myself and myself only.</p><h3>How did local staff support you throughout your program?</h3><p>They&rsquo;d translate, drop us off at different places, provide us with tools, and help us with the heavy labour. They treated us at the end of the trip by buying us good and proper food. They even helps us if ever we had medical needs and guided us through the rainforest.</p><h3>What is one thing you wish you could change about your experience?</h3><p>Go in with a different mindset.</p><figure class="awesome-image centered" style=""><img style="" src="https://www.goabroad.com/images/interviews/interviewphoto2-king-1501762852.png" alt="Travelers crossing a river in Borneo"><figcaption class="caption">Crossing a river to make to make it to our camp, bear in mind it was raining at the same time.</figcaption></figure><h3>Describe a typical day in the life of your program.</h3><p>We&rsquo;d start waking up at 6:30 a.m. or 7 a.m., if it was the community or environmental phase, and 4 a.m. or 5 a.m., if it was a trek. Then we&rsquo;d check which activity we were supposed to be doing that week with our partner. If it was cooking, you would have to put the hot water on to boil so everyone can make porridge and set out all the toppings. Tea, coffee, or hot chocolate would also be available. Then we&rsquo;d have breakfast and get dressed in the clothes we&rsquo;d been wearing for the past week, which would sometimes smell ridiculously bad. We would always fill up two water bottles, and grab sunscreen and bug deterrent, before setting off for our workplace.</p><p>At Danum we were moving sand and gravel from one site to the other, so we would get to our worksite and decide how the day was going to run. We would fill the bags with gravel or sand, and then make a chain going down the hill toward the worksite, passing the bags to one another. We spent at least two weeks doing this.</p><p>At 4 p.m. we would begin to make our way back to the worksite, leaving us enough time to all use the cold shower and then get into our longs (long trousers, tops, and socks to prevent mosquito bites). Then we would have dinner, and dessert if we had the ingredients, and play a game (or 5). We would have an end of say session, where we might go around in a circle saying what we enjoyed the most and what we didn't like that day, and also thanking people, before we went off to bed.</p><h3>What was your accommodation like?</h3><p>We were outside most of the time with a shelter, so we fell asleep to the sound of nature, and rain sometimes. It was very cozy, but we didn&rsquo;t have much personal space. It was very simple, so we were often in DIY situations.</p><h3>How did you spend your free time?</h3><p>Reading, drawing, sleeping (which was impossible sometimes because it was so hot, but naps were necessary), playing card games, listening to music, washing clothes, and trying to get a tan.</p><h3>What surprised you most about Borneo?</h3><p>I was very surprised at learning about the palm oil industry. To and from our phases, you would see miles and miles of land just covered in palm trees. It&rsquo;s such a shame to see such a beautiful country being destroyed by corporate greed.</p><figure class="awesome-image centered" style=""><img style="" src="https://www.goabroad.com/images/interviews/interviewphoto3-king-1501763004.png" alt="Girls relaxing in a hammock in the woods"><figcaption class="caption">In the coziness of a handmade hammock.</figcaption></figure><h3>How difficult was it to communicate with locals?</h3><p>It wasn&rsquo;t difficult at all, we had the help of our home country venturers which helped massively. But also the locals were able to speak English and we even learned some Malay as well. In the community phase, it was fairly difficult. When we attempted to teach lessons, it was quite difficult and embarrassing, because the children quite often were reluctant to participate.</p><h3>What is one thing every participant should know before participating in your program?</h3><p>It will get difficult at times and it's important that you remain positive and speak to people about your feelings, because everyone is in the same boat as you are.</p><h3>What is one thing you wish you would have known before volunteering abroad in Malaysia?</h3><p>I wish I had known what more to bring and how important certain pieces of equipment would be.</p><h3>Do you have any packing tips for individuals headed to Borneo?</h3><p>Paracord is extremely important, so bring enough of it. Also, duct tape as well as a bowl AND a plate, not just one or the other. A cheap iPod which you can get off ebay. A portable charger, if possible a solar powered one, and make sure you learn how to use it properly before hand. A cheap hand pocket knife, because it will definitely come in handy; whether it being DIY clothes or carving something out of wood, it will be really handy. You can buy cheap tops when you&rsquo;re over there, so don&rsquo;t bother bringing a whole bunch of tops with you. I do suggest volunteers bring dresses and flowy shorts for when they&rsquo;re at base camp.</p><h3>What was the hardest part about volunteering abroad?</h3><p>I think the hardest part of volunteering was being away from home for so long, away from my loved ones and getting over difficult situations which I had left at home. Why?</h3><p>Yes I would. Not many charities are like Raleigh. Not only are volunteers focusing on making a lasting impact, but they also get a chance to make a lasting impact on themselves. This program is &ldquo;character building&rdquo; as they call it.</p>

<h3>What inspired you to go abroad? <span style="white-space:pre">	</span></h3><p>A friend of mine mentioned she was going to volunteer in Africa in the coming year, which inspired me to start planning my own volunteer abroad trip.</p><h3>Why did you choose International Volunteer HQ (IVHQ)?&nbsp;<span style="white-space: pre;">	</span></h3><p>I chose IVHQ because their programs are relatively affordable, it was a company that had been around for a while so it was well established, and its safety measures were very reassuring.</p><figure class="awesome-image centered" style=""><img style="" src="https://www.goabroad.com/images/interviews/interviewphoto2-dominic-1499830490.jpg" alt="Payangan Kindergarten in Bali, Indonesia"><figcaption class="caption">Payangan Kindergarten</figcaption></figure><h3>What was your favorite part about Bali? <span style="white-space:pre">	</span></h3><p>My favourite part of being in Bali would have to be the locals. There was this local bar/restaurant not too far from my accommodation, and I fell in love with it to say the least. Leo, the owner, and Thomas, a fellow regular and volunteer, just drew me into the place. Meeting Leo, hearing his story to create Cupit, the name of the place just reinforced the feeling of family I felt from the first time I walked through the doors.</p><h3>What made your experience abroad unique? <span style="white-space:pre">	</span></h3><p>I believe the group that I had made the biggest impact on my experience. If there was ever any confusion about what was expected of the volunteers or what to teach the kids, someone was always there ready to lend a hand. I especially recognize the help of my coordinator and the local teacher at my placement, because I know that without them, I definitely wouldn't have been able to make as great an impact on the kids' lives and education, as well as on the community.</p><h3>What's one thing you wish you would have done differently? <span style="white-space:pre">	</span></h3><p>The only thing that I regret is not having planned to stay longer. I don't think two weeks was anywhere near enough, and I definitely haven't had enough of Bali by a long shot.</p><h3>Describe a typical day in the life of your program.</h3><p>We would wake up and get ready to go to the canteen around 7:00 a.m., so that we could eat breakfast before meeting with out coordinator at 7:30 a.m. We would then make our way to Payangan Kindergarten, where my placement was, which was about a 30 minute drive from our village in Penestanan Kaja.</p><p>We would arrive for 8:00 a.m., at which time we would help the local teacher with her lessons with the kids, until it was our turn to teach at 8:30 a.m. From 8:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. we would review the previous day's lesson before beginning to run through that day's course material which we had prepared the day before. From 9:00 - 9:30 was break time for the kids, so we would all go outside and play games with them, their favourite being Duck, Duck, Goose. At 9:30 until 10, we would continue our lessons with the kids. After that the teacher would wrap up and do prayer with the kids, and we&rsquo;d help to the best of our abilities.</p><figure class="awesome-image left-aligned" style="width: 50%;"><img src="https://www.goabroad.com/images/interviews/interviewphoto4-dominic-1499831026.jpg" alt="Water temple in Bali, Indonesia" style="display: inline;"><figcaption class="caption">Water Temple</figcaption></figure><p>When class was over, we&rsquo;d head back to the village and our driver would drop us off at the Green Lion office. From there my partner and I would head down to the Rice Terrace House to plan out the lesson for the following day.</p><h3>What did you enjoy doing in your free time? <span style="white-space:pre">	</span></h3><p>There was a pool nearby that you could access for about $5. There was a bar/restaurant that all the locals know called Cupit, which is where I would spend most of my time. The staff is awesome, food is cheap and tastes good, and the wifi is great. There is also live music there on Tuesdays and Thursdays. There was another cafe called Kopi Desa, where they had movie night on Wednesdays. My housemate Lawson and I visited some tourist attractions too, such as waterfalls and hikes.</p><h3>What was your accommodation like? What did you like best about it? <span style="white-space:pre">	</span></h3><p>Our accommodation was very, very basic, but it wasn't too bad. I really liked that there was space for me and my house to socialize and chat in.</p><h3>What is one thing every participant should know before participating in your program? <span style="white-space:pre">	</span></h3><p>I believe that every volunteer should be prepared to put work into their program. It is easy to forget that you are there to volunteer during orientation week. The people you meet there will make you never want to leave. I believe this is the best way to see and truly appreciate a culture. Through this program, you'll really be able to fall in love with the country and the people.</p>

That is usually a make it or break it kind of thing, and it definitely made my experience! The kids were amazing and loved having me there as well.</p><h3>How did local staff support you throughout your program? <span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre">	</span></h3><p>Whenever I had questions or concerns, they were right there to help. They made me feel at home from the moment I walked through the Lovina doors.</p><h3>What is one thing every participant should know before participating in your program? <span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre">	</span></h3><p>Prepare yourself and go in with an open mindset. It can be challenging to be away from normal life for a period of time, especially with language barriers at the school. Most of them knew a little English and were also willing to try to communicate with you, so I got by just fine. The kids I was working with in kindergarten taught me things as well, so I picked up a few phrases and words while I was there.</p><h3>Describe a typical day in the life of your program. <span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre">	</span></h3><p>Breakfast at 7 a.m. and head to school by 8 a.m. From 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. it was classroom time, and at 9 a.m. the kids had recess and a snack break. Every day when we would come back from recess we sang songs and played games until school ended at 10 a.m.</p><p>The rest of the day was ours to do what we please! Some days we hung by the pool, did waterfall trips, beach walks, shopping, or just about anything; other days we just hung around the house. We spent some time preparing for the next day&rsquo;s lessons too. Dinner was at 5 p.m. and the food was always amazing. After dinner we would head out for drinks, take a trip to the mini mart, or have movie nights.</p><h3>What did you enjoy doing in your free time most often? <span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre">	</span></h3><p>There were so many options! The staff were quick to help us book transfers and give us ideas about things to do. We saw so much in such a short amount of time.</p><h3>What was your favorite part about Bali?&nbsp;</h3><p>I felt so safe. We walked everywhere, day and night and never had any problems. But it by far exceeded my expectations! I shared with three other girls and we had our own bathroom. The cold showers were nice considering the temperature! The Lovina house had a pool and great common house for gathering, mealtimes and wifi. I loved the atmosphere. It really did feel like home away from home.</p><h3>Is there anything you wish you would have done differently? <span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre">	</span></h3><p>Stayed more than three weeks</p><h3>What was the hardest part about volunteering abroad?</h3><p>The hardest part for me about volunteering abroad was stepping outside of my comfort zone. I have usually traveled with other people, but this time there was no one who was able to go with me. I knew it was something that I had always wanted to do, so I just decided to do it. I was very nervous going into it, as it being my first solo trip, but in the end it was completely life changing.</p><h3>What is one thing you wish you would have known before volunteering abroad in Indonesia?</h3><p>I feel like I was very well prepared. I went into knowing what I was in for and had talked to prior volunteers about their experiences. I think the only thing I could have been more prepared on was what they wanted me to teach the kids. In America, we have a set curriculum and in the school I work in, we are required to follow that. It's hard not knowing what the kids already know when you go in the first few days.</p><h3>Do you have any packing tips for individuals heading to Bali?</h3><p>Bug spray, sunscreen, and bug spray! Oh and light clothing, you sweat, all the time. And a poncho! Also, if you are teaching, bring stickers and different activities for the kids; they don't have to be big, but anything helps (i.e. flashcards, coloring books, crayons, paper, etc.).</p><h3>What do you feel the biggest benefit of volunteering abroad is?</h3><p>It made me truly thankful for the things I have, the country I was born in, and the way I was raised. It has also made me appreciate my life here. Living simply over there made me realize how much I don't need and don't want.</p><h3>Would you recommend IVHQ to others? Why? <span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre">	</span></h3><p>Absolutely! Why would you not want to make a difference in someone else's life and help make the world a better place?! Not only are you helping change it, it changes you in more ways than you could imagine.</p><h3>If you could volunteer abroad again, where would you go?</h3><p>I am already trying to plan my next volunteer trip for next winter, and Madagascar really sticks out as a place I want to go, so I'm thinking that's what it will be! But if I could, I would go everywhere!</p><div><br></div>

<h3>What inspired you to go abroad?</h3><p>I wanted to see a new part of the world and experience a different culture. As I finished my year 13 exams in May 2016, I had four months free before uni, so I decided to use that time to travel and do something I would never have considered before.</p><h3>Why did you choose Oyster Worldwide?</h3><p>After Oyster gave a talk at my school, I looked at their conservation trips on the website. As I wanted to travel, but I've never been too keen on wandering around just taking photos, I wanted an interactive holiday, preferably one which involved volunteer work. I found the project in Borneo, which sounded amazing because of the location, animals, and set up.</p><p>Oyster has visited every one of their projects, so I was able to find out a lot of information before even booking anything. After having a chat with one of the staff members, I was set on going to Borneo to volunteer with sun bears, mainly because every aspect of it was new and different to England.</p><figure class="awesome-image centered" style=""><img style="" src="http://cdn2.goabroad.com/images/interviews/interviewphoto1-prestage-1483408608.png" alt="Girl testing a piece of wood"></figure><h3>What was your favorite part about Borneo?</h3><p>I stayed in a small hotel for the duration of the project, but each room was a separate wood lodge. I was staying in the volunteer section, so we had our own kitchen; this meant we didn't have to use the restaurant on site, but almost every night I went down to the restaurant to chat to the staff. They were so friendly and curious about England, so it was really fun getting to know them.</p><h3>What made your experience abroad unique?</h3><p>The fact that I went alone was fairly special. It was the first time I've ever travelled by myself, and it was the furthest I have ever gone. No one in England knows what sun bears are, so that made it more amazing. I learnt about the animals and conservation in Malaysia, and I made some great friends. Because I went alone, I had to engage with the permanent staff more; this was definitely a good thing, as I tend to be quite shy! This trip brought me out of my shell and definitely helped to prepare me for uni. I had a fantastic time getting to know all the staff, and the bears, and I would love to go back and see the progress that the bears have made.</p><h3>How did local staff support you throughout your program?</h3><p>The volunteer coordinator for this project is from Borneo and he looks after all the volunteers. For the duration of the time I was there, he was always around if I needed help or advice. My first day volunteering I really struggled with the heat, several times. I had to sit down and chill for a while. When I was taking a break, everyone who walked past stopped and asked whether I was okay; all the staff were very caring and understanding. As I was the only non-Malaysian person on site, it became a joke that I felt it was so hot while they were wearing jumpers and woolly hats! All of the staff always made sure I was safe, happy, and well.</p><h3>What's one thing you wish you would have done differently?</h3><p>I wish I had stayed out there for longer! I was at two projects for only two weeks each. I did struggle with homesickness near the end of the four weeks, but now that I'm back I know that I could have stayed for longer. Two weeks was only just enough time to get to know the staff and bears, and I had just made friends when I had to leave. Leaving the bears was very emotional, as I had gotten to know them all, all their different personalities, and I had become part of their journey.</p><figure class="awesome-image centered" style=""><img style="" src="http://cdn3.goabroad.com/images/interviews/interviewphoto2-prestage-1483408627.png" alt="Volunteers sawing bamboo"></figure><h3>Describe a typical day in the life of your program.</h3><p>We always started on site at 8 a.m. by serving the bears breakfast. Once this was done, the keepers let the bears out into specific enclosures while we washed the food trays. Then we spent the morning cleaning the cages, which was more fun than it sounds as everyone chats while they're cleaning. This was when some of the most crazy conversations happened! Lunch was over the hottest part of the day, from 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. When we came back after eating in the caf&eacute; across the road, we distributed fresh fruit and veg to all the bears, including the ones outside. This meant we had to walk around the enclosures and throw the food in. The rest of the afternoon was then spent creating enrichment for the bears, using a variety of materials like old hose pipes, bamboo, and tyres.</p><h3>What did you enjoy doing in your free time?</h3><p>I spent some evenings with the staff from the centre, going to the cinema and their houses. They made me feel very welcome as part of the team. I also spent time in the restaurant where I was staying, talking to the staff there. They were very friendly and always ready to chat; they knew my name after my second day there!</p><h3>What was your accommodation like? What did you like best about it?</h3><p>I loved the atmosphere of the hotel and the fact it wasn't a block building. It was a number of wooden cabins spread out with grass and stepping stones leading from one to the next. As the volunteer section was at the back, we had a beautiful view out over a small valley of rainforest. It was absolutely amazing waking up to hear birds that sound so different to English birds, to make breakfast whilst watching monkeys just tens metres away from me. Being part of that is an incredible feeling.</p><h3>What is one thing every participant should know before participating in your program?</h3><p>It is a long way from home, but it is definitely worth it. Don't overthink it, because once you're there, you will love the experience and not want to leave!</p><h3>Now that you're home, how has your time in Malaysia impacted your life?</h3><p>Definitely I am more confident, and I have already booked a trip for next year. It has inspired me to see more of the world and learn more about conservation in different parts of the world. Despite needing multiple injections, it is such a fantastic experience. The independence of travelling alone, meeting new people, and becoming part of a team. Although it is scary when you first get on the plane by yourself, once you're out there it's a great feeling knowing how far you've come and what you're going to be part of.</p><h3>Would you recommend Oyster Worldwide to others? Why?</h3><p>I would recommend the bear project as it is such a contrast to anything you could do in the UK, and the people are great. They really made me feel like a part of the team and that made me enjoy it so much more.</p>

<p class="p1">I completed my primary and secondary education in China and I am going to pursue my further education in Canada, so I would like to meet new cultures and learn how to cooperate with international friends as early as possible. I feel that participating in an international program is a great way to improve my English and become more culturally tolerant. Besides, I simply enjoy being surrounded by another culture.</p>
<h3>What did you enjoy most about traveling in Indonesia?</h3>
<p class="p1">An adventure in a new country can be full of surprises, like my trip in Bali. I used to get lost on the way back to the volunteer house, but this just gave me an opportunity to witness another picture of Bali, delicate villas and houses are surrounded by those tropical plants and rice fields, which is fantastic. For me, being lost in a completely new environment can be a kind of enjoyment as well!</p>
<h3>Why did you choose IVHQ?</h3>
<p class="p1">I chose IVHQ for multiple reasons. Most importantly, the programs are affordable compared to those of other organizations and have a great reputation at the same time. Also, I realized that I would benefit a lot from its programs. Not only can we meet new friends from various countries and create our values through volunteering, but have enough time to explore the new place. What&rsquo;s more, the orientation week is extraordinary; during the orientation, we gain a better understanding of local people&rsquo;s daily life and their unique culture. Everything is so well organized, while quite flexible, which is exactly what I was looking for.</p>
<h3>What was your favorite part about Bali?</h3>
<p class="p1">When it comes to my favorite part of Bali, the answer would be the great contrast between the traditional Bali and the Bali affected by the tourist industry. We can easily visit a traditional Balinese compound when roaming about Ubud. But if we go to Kuta, for example, we can enjoy having a dinner in a pretty well-designed bar or being part of a crazy party on the beach. Therefore, Bali offers us so many choices to explore so that we will hardly get bored on this island. The contrast is so big, which means we will always get surprised there!</p>
<h3>What makes IVHQ&rsquo;s volunteer program in Bali stand out from other programs?</h3>
<p class="p1">I have never tried other programs so it is hard to say. But still, I would say the orientation week was really impressive. It was really well-organized and gave me an opportunity of &ldquo;being a Balinese&rdquo;. In that week, I learned Balinese flower offerings, basic local language, making Balinese spring roll, Balinese painting, and so many other things about their unique and amazing culture. I guess that is what makes this program so special!</p>
<h3>What was the local staff like? How supportive were they?</h3>
<p class="p1">I must say that the staff was so nice! They helped me throughout the whole program. They provided me with whatever I needed for class and gave me a hand when I had difficulty in communicating with the students. What&rsquo;s more, I once got sick and felt that I could not keep working. The staff was so caring that he just drove me back to where I lived immediately. They are all great people to work with!</p>
<h3>If you could go back, what would you do differently during your time in Bali?</h3>
<p class="p1">Since this was my first trip alone. I wanted to do so many things, like volunteering at school, exploring the new place alone, and traveling with new international friends. However, it is actually quite hard to achieve all of them well within just two weeks. Therefore, I wish I would have better managed my time.</p>
<h3>Describe a day in the life of your program.</h3>
<p class="p1">I love this question! I will try to make it detailed. I got up at 6:45 a.m. and met my colleague at 7:30 a.m. Then we took a free taxi to our school, which took us about 10 minutes. The school began at 8:00 a.m., the children would pray before class. Although they are only four years old, they are all very pious. I could feel the purity and beauty from their inner world, which moved me so much!</p>
<p class="p1">Then we would share some basic stuff in English like greetings and weathers. To make the class effective and fun, we usually danced and did some painting with the children. We would not speak too much English because they were just so young. We finished school at 10:00 a.m. and then prepared for tomorrow&rsquo;s class.</p>
<p class="p1">As you can see, I had my whole afternoon and evening free. Other volunteers might go to the pool or spend the rest of the day in a caf&eacute;; I rented a scooter and explored every corner of the town during the day and hung out with friends at nighttime. You can just do whatever you want to! As for the orientation week, each day of which was different and enjoyable. Just join IVHQ and you will know!</p>
<h3>What activity did you enjoy most outside of your volunteer work?</h3>
<p class="p1">I guess that would be watching Kecak, which is a form of Balinese dance. We watched it on the second day of orientation week. Basically, there are lots of performers sitting around a torch, percussively chanting "cak," and moving their hands and arms, and the dancers were in really delicate costumes. The performance depicted a story that the monkey-like Vanara helped Prince Rama fight the evil King Ravana. The live vibe was incredible and the vocal part was culturally unique in terms of rhythm and melody. It was amazing and I will definitely watch it again!</p>
<h3>What type of accommodation did you have? What did you like best about it?</h3>
<p class="p1">I lived in a house of traditional Balinese style. There were two floors and six rooms. Each room could hold six people. Everything was so easy for us. We could keep food in fridges, cook by ourselves, park our scooters, and shower every day. I think the best part of it was that we had enough space to interact with other volunteers. Outside the rooms, there was a big common area for us to have meals, chat, watch TV series, play cards, and even sleep. It was beautiful as well for the tropical plants. We had a great time there!</p>
<h3>How has volunteering in Bali impacted your life?</h3>
<p class="p1">I learned so many things in this volunteer trip. I met people from different countries with all kinds of life experiences, which did inspire me to travel to more places and to explore this amazing world. Besides, through the process of cooperating with international friends, I feel that I am much more open-minded now and able to think in both western and eastern ways.</p>
