Indonesia - Education and Community Work in Bali

Travel to the beautiful island of Bali and work directly with an impoverished community. You will be assisting in the development of local villages through various work projects. Volunteers have the chance to pick from a selection of projects such as construction work and health care education. This is an amazing project to volunteer in because you will witness the transformation of communities as your work progresses. As a rural and secluded community, Ubud has difficulty accessing assistance and support in developing their neighborhoods. From teaching English to young children, to construction work in the local villages, to educating about health and hygiene, this project aims to help Ubud build a strong infrastructure and improve their education and healthcare systems. This project is divided into several categories, all designed to provide security to the members of this impoverished community.

Kindergarten Teaching in Ubud, Bali

Volunteer in local kindergartens in beautiful Ubud. Help and encourage children to learn and grow creatively as you teach them language, communication, and other primary skills. Placements are available in over 15 kindergarten schools. Teach children basic English in an informal and fun way! You may also volunteer at a center that offers free kindergarten education to several 4 and 5-year-old kids from poor villages. These local children are warm and affectionate and would rather spend time playing than learning! Kindergarten teaching in Bali, like throughout the world, is informal and children will want to play with you more than be ‘taught’ formally. However, just by getting them enthused about coming to school and teaching them some basic English phrases, such as simple greetings, you may well have sown the seeds of a lifelong learning habit and doing a great, enjoyable job in the process. The children will all be excited to see you and exceptionally welcoming. This is due partly to the natural and genuine friendliness of the Balinese and partly to the fact that you will be one of a few foreigners they have met!

Volunteering with International Volunteer HQ alongside the incredible team at my placement in Kenya has been one of the most humbling and grounding experiences of my life. I arrived thinking I was coming to give time, energy, skills, support. What I didn’t expect was how much I would receive in return. Every day here has been a reminder of the power of dignity, resilience, and community. I have witnessed strength that doesn’t shout, hope that doesn’t give up, and kindness that shows up even when resources are limited. The people at the women's education placement lead with heart, purpose, and an unwavering commitment to uplifting others not just for today, but for generations to come. This experience has slowed me down in the best possible way. It has invited me to listen more deeply, to be present, and to remember that real impact starts with human connection. The smiles, the conversations, the shared moments they stay with you. They change you. I am deeply grateful to IVHQ for creating a bridge that allows volunteers like me to step into meaningful, respectful, community-led work. And I am endlessly thankful to my placement in Kenya for welcoming me with open arms and trusting me to be part of their story, even for a short time. This is not a trip I will “return from” unchanged. It is an experience I will carry forward into my work, my relationships, and how I show up in the world. Thank you for reminding me that service is not about saving, it’s about standing beside, learning together, and honoring the shared humanity that connects us all.
