The Integrated Music, Dance and Art Therapy for Children with Special Needs in Ecuador project was launched more than two decades ago to provide support to kids who are often unsupported in society. The center offers a range of services, from early stimulation for those with learning difficulties to language therapy. To date, the project serves around 80 children and young adults each day, providing activities like daycare, therapeutic care, and academic art. With the number of programs available in the integrated therapy center, you can help in different areas and take on varied tasks. You could support children aged 12+ in arts, music, and academic disciplines or focus on life skills and developing autonomy for young adults. You could also work on the musical artistic development of kids under 12 years old. If you join in July, you could assist with the summer program.

The challenge: The Indigenous communities surrounding Atandahua have few opportunities and resources. Children study in dilapidated schools and receive basic education with minimal creative expression or cultural reinforcement. This affects their personal and cultural identity; many do not see a future beyond what they see around them. The solution: Art can bring communities together, build confidence and transferable skills, and transform communal spaces into vibrant hubs with powerful symbology that can change people's perceptions of themselves. We're looking for passionate interns who can work with children and community groups to design and implement arts programs that result in community-wide impacts that can be a stepping stone to a better life. Our proven methodology Our programs are built around the Design Thinking methodology, ensuring that every solution meets the unique needs of low-income populations. You’ll engage deeply with local stakeholders to understand root challenges, co-create ideas, and test solutions.

Through World Internships, get the chance to work with local non-government organizations in the Ecuadorian capital – Quito. This internship finds you supporting initiatives that provide education to children and adults or promote health-related education on proper hygiene and sanitation, among others. Projects also include working on national poverty awareness campaigns, environmental conservation, and fundraising. Your internship with the NGO varies, depending on your passions and skill sets. You will be tending to some of the projects at the center, including English language education, career coaching, administrative logistics, and creative curriculum planning. Gain a variety of skills, such as curriculum design, NGO administration, and language education. Quito—the second highest official capital city in the world in terms of elevation—has a lot to offer international interns, from scenery and people to language and culture. While in the city, you will have the opportunity to improve your Spanish language skills, explore ruins of the Inca Empire, and visit the many parishes that tell the history of Ecuador under Spanish rule. This program is also open to volunteers.
