Volunteering in Mukono offers a unique opportunity to give back to rural communities through participation in grassroots projects. On top of this, you will gain an insight into the daily living conditions of locals. As a volunteer, you will experience traditional Ugandan life and take part in daily activities. These include helping in construction and building, visiting elderly villagers, teaching children outside their classrooms, assisting in setting up vegetable gardens, giving youth health talks, teaching English to high school students, feeding animals, and organizing health outreach programs. Ssamba Foundation operates in rural communities where dirt roads turn to sticky mud when it rains and into dust when the climate is dry. The main transport is Boda- Boda bikes, which share the road with animals and bicycles. Like a big part of Uganda, these communities have households struggling to meet their basic needs; much less putting their kids in school. Their main sources of income include small-scale animal rearing, selling fruits and vegetables, brickmaking, and other manual labor jobs.

Damaraland, a sparsely populated area, is home to virtually untouched nature with fascinating plant and animal life. To ensure that the region's desert elephants can roam through Namibia’s Damaraland for years to come, the project is devoted to the protection of these animals. Only a few desert elephants were left in the region 20 years ago mainly due to conflict with local farmers. Life in Damaraland is largely dependent on the few springs, which have water all year round. These springs are often taken over by man, so the elephants sometimes destroy the farmer’s homes and wells in their desperate daily quest for water. The project aims to create a balance that meets the needs of both humans and animals. You will help the farmers with development aid, schooling, training, and setting up protective walls. You will build new water holes for the animals, away from settlements and the local population, fostering a harmonious co-existence between man and elephants. Moreover, you will monitor the desert elephants, accompanying these gentle giants on their endless ramblings and observing their population, behavior, and movement patterns.

The Bugembe Initiative for Development (BID) is an action-oriented, community-based organization dedicated to empowering women, youth, and vulnerable individuals. Formed in 2011 with its base in Bugembe, Jinja District, the Bugembe Initiative for Development (BID) is an action-oriented, community-based organization dedicated to empowering women, youth, and vulnerable individuals through a holistic, socio-economic approach. Diseases, literacy, unemployment, poverty, ignorance, wars, and natural disasters in Uganda have resulted in situations of vulnerability and moral degeneration. The most affected people are the children, women, youth, and the elderly. Many current community initiatives fall short in coping with the ever-increasing number of poor women, needy youths, and vulnerable children. BID Uganda was born out of the need to reach out to these neglected, forgotten, HIV/AIDS sufferers, orphans, abandoned street children, homeless, and those in extreme poverty within the communities and our society who are hurting in life. At BID Uganda, we are always looking for volunteers to help us administer our programmes and get involved in the community.
