Sri Lanka - Women’s English Literacy Program

Join GoEco on the tropical, southern coast of Sri Lanka to help break down barriers to women's education! In Sri Lanka, women, unfortunately, have a disadvantage when it comes to receiving a high-level education. This then prevents them from being as employable as men. This program was created to break down that barrier and to give women the education that they need to become both empowered and more employable. Volunteers on this program will work with women from middle-class and lower-class families, mostly from the Muslim community. Volunteers will focus on helping these women enhance their English language speaking skills. Classes take place in the afternoon, so volunteers can relax in the mornings or can choose to teach at a kindergarten or Buddhist monastery.

A Guide to Teaching Abroad in Sri Lanka

Locations

Although it is dwarfed by its mammoth western neighbor or India, Sri Lanka is still home to a fairly large population of over 20 million citizens. The whole country consists of one large island plain located in the Indian Ocean south of the Bay of Bengal. While there are a few major urban centers located across the countryside, the majority of the population continue to reside in rural areas.

Colombo, the country’s largest city, is generally the most popular destination where to teach abroad in Sri Lanka. While the city proper is home to just over 700,000 citizens, the expansive metropolitan area which encompasses it is home to some 5.5 million total. Colombo is the major cultural, economic, and tourism center or Sri Lanka, and the country’s political capital of Sri Jayewardenepura is located directly adjacent to the city.

Because Colombo is home to nearly a quarter of the country’s population, life can understandably be quite fast-paced there. If you are looking to teach abroad in Sri Lanka in a more laid-back environment, you might look into placements in cities such as Galle, a coastal city with a fascinating cultural heritage of indigenous and colonial influences.

Three weeks volunteering in Siem Reap

I spent three weeks volunteering at Salariin Kampuchea Learning Center in Siem Reap, where I helped teach English to younger students and supported the development of their social media presence. It was one of the most enriching experiences I’ve ever had. Some days were more challenging than others—adapting to a new environment and finding ways to communicate across cultures. But what I’ll carry with me, more than anything, is the deep sense of connection I felt with the people. I can confidently say I’ve grown and learned so much, and that’s something I’ll always be grateful for. Living and working within the local community gave me a complete perspective shift. I was struck by their warmth and generosity, and the quiet strength with which they face life. From the very beginning, I felt welcomed. The children, the staff, and my host family made me feel included from the start, making it easy to feel at home throughout my time there
