With more castles per square metre than any other country in the world, studying abroad in Swansea, Wales might be a fairytale come true for many prospective students. Nestled on the beautiful south coast, the city of Swansea is ideally connected to the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, the mountainous Brecon Beacons, and the capital city of Cardiff. That’s a lot of adventure fuel per square mile, with a world-class university at the heart of it. What more could any study abroad in Swansea candidate wish for?

Universities in Swansea—and the whole city—has something to offer everyone. Located right on the rugged coastline of southern Wales, there are plenty of outdoor activities to fuel any adrenaline needs. The Pembrokeshire Coast and Brecon Beacons National Parks are also within easy reach, offering further coastal and mountainous pursuit possibilities for weekend study breaks. 

Within the city, there are a range of museums, galleries, and some of those famous Welsh castles too—you won’t struggle to get a cultural fix. The local railway station provides an ideal connection point to the rest of Wales, and beyond to the UK, meaning your explorations have few bounds. Don’t forget to sample some local food, and see if you can find out what a rarebit is before you come home!

Like most UK universities, Swansea will have some university accommodation, usually halls of residence where students can stay, at least for the first year of their course. This is a great way to meet other students and make friends, whilst you find your feet in the city. Prices are competitive with local housing options, and the city also hosts a range of alternative student housing once you’re ready to move into town as well.

Wales has it’s very own language, but few people speak it fluently, as it’s so different to English. For example, the country is actually called Cymru in the native tongue. Although Wales gets a bad reputation for being “behind the times” from it’s fellow Brits, it is in fact some of the most beautiful natural scenery in the whole region.
