Antarctica: Human Impacts on a Fragile Environment

Antarctica is a wondrous place, the “coldest, windiest, driest, highest, quietest, most remote, and least understood continent on earth.” It has been an object of human speculation for millennia and a prize for explorers, sealers and whalers, scientists, and geostrategists for over two hundred years. Examine this unique corner of the world and get a broad overview of its human and natural history. Special attention is given to Antarctica’s physical and ecological systems, human activity, sustainable tourism, and international collaborations. Attend weekly preparatory lectures online with Antarctic experts from around the globe during the fall semester and work on assignments, including a research essay focusing on a topic related to an area of your interest. Spend the winter break participating in a field study project in Tierra del Fuego and Antarctica. The voyage crossing the Drake Passage and exploring the Antarctic Peninsula is a once-in-a-lifetime remote encounter with one of the globe's last frontiers and the scene of important climate, ocean, and environmental study. Non-degree seeking students may now apply for this program through the University of Denver.

SFS Peru: The Living Amazon

Experience the incredible biodiversity of the Peruvian Amazon when you spend a semester in the rainforest studying conservation, development, and sustainability. Meet the residents, analyze environmental policies, and explore diverse ecosystems to learn about climate change, resource extraction, and other regional issues. Visit flooded forests on a multi-day riverboat expedition through a national reserve and travel to the highlands of the Andes, where you’ll explore cloud forests and see the historic Incan capital of Cusco, the hub for visitors to Machu Picchu. SFS students will live and study at the Center for Amazon Studies, which lies halfway between the remote city of Iquitos and the port city of Nauta, nestled in the Amazon. Earth Expeditions in Galápagos: Islands of Change

The Galápagos Islands are a spectacular natural treasure and one of the best places on Earth to appreciate change. To biologists, a trip to the Galápagos is something of a pilgrimage to sacred evolutionary ground, for it was here in 1835 that Charles Darwin witnessed how giant tortoises, finches, and other taxa each varied from island to island across the archipelago—observations that, among many others, shaped Darwin’s ideas on evolution. For this course, we will be working with Ecology Project International (EPI), which championed inquiry-driven field science and sustainability for many years and made tremendous progress working with the Galápagos National Parks Service and others on ecological education. This course is also offered in partnership with the Houston Zoo. Students in this course should be prepared to explore the forces of change in the Galápagos and contribute directly to sustainable solutions to current issues. Before and following the field experience in Galápagos, students will complete coursework via Dragonfly Workshops' Web-Based Learning Community as they apply these experiences to their home institutions.

Throughout my travels and study abroad experiences, I can confirm that this was truly the most eye-opening experience I have ever had. The education and research skills acquired through this program are invaluable and one of a kind. And when it came to wildlife, you will truly have some of the best sightings in your life. My group was bless enough to see leopard seals, Emperor and Adelie penguins, and even humpback whales bubble netting! Everything I learned from this trip, from travel skills to group communication to even research structure has all been applied and reapplied to my degree. If you want a once-in-a-lifetime experience with learning skills you will constantly apply, look no further than this program.
