A Guide to Studying Civil Engineering Abroad
Locations
Every country has its own way of improving the quality of infrastructure and transportation. Picking a place that fits with your skillset or interests is crucial to civil engineering study abroad.
Canada has an advanced economy and many natural resources that contribute to making it one of the best countries to study civil engineering abroad. Canadians are focused on progressive engineering, especially in terms of the environment. This makes it a valuable place for students because it will teach forward thinking and progressivism. Vast coastlines and bustling cities are only a few reasons why Canada is a great place to take your journey abroad.
The United Kingdom is a focus of new and improved engineering projects, primarily in London. The government spends large amounts every year to make sure the country’s infrastructure is solid. From preventing flooding to building new roads and bridges, the UK won’t run out of projects for students to be exposed to. London is a perfect location to study abroad if you would enjoy a busy, upscale urban city life. The culture of the city is fast-paced, but you can always find a quiet park for relaxation or studying.
The Netherlands is one of the best places for civil engineering study abroad programs. Apart from its beautiful cities, unique history, and outstanding art, the country has high infrastructure and developed transportation systems. The government has a large budget of $35 billion to fund engineering projects. Culture will be enticing for students due to Amsterdam’s World War II history and popular figures such as artists like Van Gogh and Rembrandt.
Benefits
Programs will differ in each country, but the same general learning experiences will apply anywhere you decide to study civil engineering abroad. Hands-on work will be almost an everyday experience for students in this field. In the United Kingdom, you will be exposed to laboratory experiments and opportunities. The amount of dams in the Netherlands make it a unique place to study hydrology. The country being the largest port for imports and exports in Europe will give you an interesting and in-depth look at transport engineering.
You can learn a lot at your home university, but regions of the world, countries, even individual communities go about building and maintaining infrastructure differently. A successful civil engineer should gather information and techniques from numerous unique backgrounds in order to develop a better understanding on how he or she can provide for their society. Studying civil engineering abroad adds value that one cannot attain when studying within the confines of their college campus.
You’ll gain a plethora of new soft and hard skills to brag about with civil engineering study abroad programs. Soft skills that a civil engineer is guaranteed to use on a daily basis are the use of communication and listening skills, while a technical skill that needs to be mastered is the ability to use programming to insert data and create projects using software. There are numerous different programs to use in the engineering industry, and by studying abroad, you will have the chance to learn new software and how to be proficient with new programming.
Inside Scoop
Immersing yourself in culture, hands-on learning from experts in the civil engineering field, and creating memories and skills that you will carry throughout your life—these are just a few of the reasons studying abroad is a good idea. You will be immersed in a new culture with a very diverse group of people, and this allows you the opportunity to step outside of your comfort zone and learn to mesh with new people. The uniqueness of the experience will be a guide and a great talking point for future endeavors.
Civil engineers often specialize in specific technical areas. There are certain countries that are renowned around the world for specific specializations, like Netherlands and their use of damming and bridge techniques. Having the ability to travel and study in countries that operate on the cutting edge of these engineering systems provides value to civil engineering students.
Studying abroad will allow you to develop and sharpen tools to better equip yourself for when you land a civil engineering job in the future. Problem solving and critical thinking are skills you will soon master when navigating life in another country, and you may also have the opportunity to learn a new language, depending on where you study. You have so many options and open doors, so take advantage of it and study civil engineering abroad!

Latest Program Reviews
Choose this program for its beautiful scenery, not for its food and affordability.
August 14, 2026by: Ian Spry - United StatesProgram: SIT Study Abroad: Iceland: Renewable Energy (Summer 1)
I initially thought that the experience would be much more academically intense than it actually was. This notion was based on the information in the syllabi. The seminar syllabus listed weekly required readings and even an in-class exam, but neither occurred. In the project class, the weights for each assignment were far from accurate, and the required word count was double what it should have been. I am not complaining that I did not have much work to do, but the syllabi should be updated to represent the classes accurately. The two individuals who led the program did a good job planning the experience and ensuring that students were in the know about the activities that would be done each day. However, some activities and site visits felt like fillers to make sure students did not have too much free time. The dorms and hostel we stayed at were overall very solid. The only negative was the kitchen at the hostel in Akureyri, which only contained a mini fridge, a microwave, and one burner. The food in Iceland is extremely mediocre due to its reliance on imported products. This means that produce and food overall were often below the standards of food in the U.S. On top of this, any above-average food you want to eat will cost you an arm and a leg, so eating out often is impossible if you want to stay within budget. One positive of Iceland is that almost everyone knows English. This made traveling and communicating very easy. Icelanders are known to be very honest and can sometimes be judgmental if tourists are not abiding by the country's norms.
Life Changing Experience
July 27, 2026by: Rylee Soifer - United StatesProgram: Semester at Sea: Global Study Abroad on a Floating Campus
I graduated from high school a semester early, and the only way I wanted to spend my semester was by being abroad. I've known about Semester at Sea for around 6 years and I wanted to take advantage of this opportunity. I searched up the requirements to be accepted and luckily fit all the requirements most importantly being 18, so immediately I applied. I then got an email back the next morning saying I got accepted into the program and that email brought me to tears in the middle of one of my classes. I couldn't wait to board the MV World Odyssey and embark on this journey of a lifetime. On the ship, I gained so much knowledge about different cultures and I was able to be fully immersed in them, not just sticking to the touristy things offered. Semester at Sea does an amazing job keeping the students' safety in country as a priority with having mandatory “Pre-Port meetings” the night before arriving in a country, and offering field programs which are ship run excursions with ship faculty leading them. The community on the ship was nothing I have ever experienced before. We were so close knit and it felt like I was truly in a connected, caring, and welcoming environment. I met the people I never imagined I'd connect with, and they ended up becoming the best connections I've ever made with people. Semester at Sea also helped me get out of my comfort zone which led me to have experiences I would have never imagined I'd have, best example being running a half marathon in Vigo, Spain even though I'm not a runner and have never been a runner. Semester at Sea has given me the world and the opportunity to appreciate it to its fullest. I left the ship with my passport full, but my heart is even fuller with people, memories, and connections I will forever cherish. Semester at Sea was truly the best experience I have ever had and would recommend it to anyone as it was life changing.

July 16, 2026by: Breanna Gotch - United StatesMy experience studying abroad in Molise Italy was absolutely life-changing. Grazie, Breanna! Colli really is beautiful and it's such a great partnership!
Experience of a life time!
July 10, 2026by: Xavier Bonilla - United StatesProgram: Semester at Sea: Global Study Abroad on a Floating Campus
One of the most underrated aspect of semester at sea is the ship campus itself. Being able to live so close to your friends and just walking a few flight of stairs to your classroom and being able to sit down with your professors for lunch is such an amazing experience. It's eternal sunsets, it's endless travel stories from your friends, it's lifetime of memories. Highly recommend. One of the best decisions I made. And still day dream about this experience, still talk and travel to meet my SAS friends 4 years later.

I had the time of my life
July 10, 2026by: Zowie Jackson - United StatesProgram: Semester at Sea: Global Study Abroad on a Floating Campus
I have not experienced anything like semester at sea before, therefore giving me a whole lot of different lenses to look at the world with. I completely enjoyed my experience and understand the importance of understanding others concerns, communication, communities, and countries. A overall wonderful experience that has changed my views as well as the way I live and who I am as a person.

Incredible experience!
July 03, 2026by: Maggie Hernandez - United StatesThe Molise Italian Studies program was a wonderful way to be immersed in the Molise region, some of the Puglia region, and Rome. By visiting some of the smaller, lesser-known areas in these regions, I got to see firsthand how people live, work, and support their communities through the activities and social work experiences. I can say I grew as a person and have a new outlook on my everyday life at home. It was evident that Italians in these regions value community and connection. I appreciated the opportunities to participate in activities at some of the agencies, such as at LAI and in Capracotta, rather than simply observing the activity. Our tour leader, Andrea, was kind, patient, organized, and knowledgeable throughout the entire trip.
Grazie, Maggie! We are so glad to hear this trip made such an impact on you, and we can't wait to hear about your plans moving forward!
So much fun!
July 02, 2026by: Alex Santoro - United StatesI had an absolutely amazing time; I made so many incredible memories that I truly won't ever forget. The friendships I made were so awesome, and the opportunities to experience true culture were life-changing. Both of my professors were absolutely wonderful, and our guide was incredible. Everyone was so amazing and truly tried their best to give us the most rewarding experience possible, and they exceeded my dreams.
Grazie, Alex!
Wonderful, meaningful trip!
July 01, 2026by: Jen McLaughlin - United StatesMyself and my colleague brought a group of ten university students on a trip with Molise, and we could not be happier! Our guides were knowledgeable and kind. Every single person we encountered along the way as we traveled was welcoming and gracious. So many laughs were shared amongst our students and the Italian community, and we never once felt as if we were not in steady, capable hands with the company. Upon returning home from Italy, we immediately arranged our next trip with Scott and Megan, and plan to continue this trip regularly to allow students to continue to experience all the amazing things our first group did.

Thank you, Jen! Looking forward to working with Wilkes again in 2027!
Abroad Dreams Come True
July 01, 2026by: Cialyn Floyd - United StatesAs a student who dreamed of going abroad for years, I never considered a trip like this would be at my fingertips. Many know that traveling abroad is a big decision because it involves location costs return of investment and with being in school of the timeline of when it’s going to happen. I decided to make my minor Hotel restaurant management sophomore year of college, but wasn’t sure of how I was still going to make my broad dream come true. Fall semester of 2024 when I was in one of my HRM studies I wondered what options there could be to study the subject abroad. That’s when I discovered the Molise Italian Studies program NAU in Italy: Economics of Gastronomy. After promptly siding up, I was introduced to a fully guided program with pre-arrival meetings that fully explained the details and necessary precautions of going abroad. Which included an itinerary of the daily activities the lessons that would be focused on and places of accommodation. All details, which transferred extremely well into the actual trip. Each lesson was fully in depth and offered different opportunities. My favorite day was probably the day we visited Di Iorio Tartufi - Italian Truffle where we learned how truffles were safely found and made into a meal. I came home with at least 5 jars!! I highly enjoyed the environment, the greenery, and absolutely the delicious assortment of truffle products. At the end of the day, this program offered me a week of excitement and verity of locations across molise. I couldn’t have asked for a better program to introduce me to the world of traveling.
Grazie, Cialyn! So glad to be a part of your HRM journey (& we dream of truffles too)!
Boss semester
June 27, 2026by: Ezra Bradford - United StatesProgram: Study Abroad Semester Program
I had a pretty great semester at UL. I thoroughly enjoyed the classes and the professors, but also learned a lot about myself and the Irish people. I joined the Christian Union pretty early on and was welcomed into fellowship with that group. I accompanied some friends of that group into smaller towns I may not have otherwise visited and helped lead churches playing piano. I was welcomed into homes and I really felt loved. I also got to see much of the countryside and felt it easy to travel around to sight see. My time in Ireland is a time where I grew in knowing myself but also my understanding of the world. I loved learning Irish traditions, culture, and history, and I know that I could never know nearly as much by staying home.
Life changing!
June 23, 2026by: Graziella Hartman - United StatesProgram: Study Abroad Semester Program
In my time here, I learned so much about what I am capable of and what the world has to offer. This is largely due to the support of the study abroad team and resources like the writing, counseling, and health centers. I am so proud of all I have accomplished, be it in academics and the things I learned, and in stepping out of my comfort zone and exploring more about Ireland, Irish culture, and how I immerse myself in it. Thank you so much to everyone who helped make this possible for me.

I think that this program is an accessible way for students to venture outside of their comfort zone in both their taste pallet and social interactions. In this program you will learn to make friends with people you might not encounter on a day to day basis.
Well-Structured with Helpful Orientation
June 03, 2026by: Adriana L.Program: CIEE Semester in Seoul, South Korea
Program is well structured and the pre orientation is super helpful, specially because going to a new country can feel overwhelming so the guide made it easier. The staff is very attentive to our needs and they host events and day trips to help us be involved in our new city
Costa Rica Medical Campaign

This experience has been one of the best of my life. The people of Costa Rica have given so much patience and gratitude for our work and that makes the long days totally worth it. My confidence has grown so much over this trip and it has given me so much clarity. I am forever blessed to have met the Maximo staff and everyone along the road.

this experience was truly amazing. We were paired with the best team, and learned so much right off the bat. After leaving this trip I now feel so much more confident in myself, and the future. I am so thankful for this experience and suggest that if you are fortunate enough to do it, you should!!
The best four months of my studies spent at UL!
May 26, 2026by: Antonia Heil - AustriaProgram: Study Abroad Semester Program
It was honestly the best experience it could have been - Great organization of the study abroad program, easy module selection, broad offer of modules, fun and regular campus activities, a bunch of reserved housing spaces for international students (be fast though) and a great study abroad team that helps with all your worries! I made so many good friends and enjoyed the spring semester immensely. 10/10 would recommend. the only negative part is that Ireland is a pretty expensive country as it is... UL offers a lot of cheaper food options though, that helped!
Best of Both Worlds
May 16, 2026by: Eliza Abston - United StatesProgram: USAC Ireland: Cork - Full Curriculum
I studied business in Cork for one semester. USAC staff were extremely helpful with everything from learning about the culture to getting medical care if needed. I had an amazing time in Cork, getting to explore Ireland's nature and (of course) local pubs and coffee shops. While I was there, I was able to visit 16 other countries. I'm glad I had the USAC community, especially when I was homesick. However, I also got to build international friendships with locals and students. I think this program is the best of both worlds -- American friends and direct enrollment at a foreign university. 1000% would recommend.

An experience of a life time!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ My experience with Maximum in Costa Rica was absolutely amazing and unforgettable. This was my very first time studying abroad, and I could not have asked for a more welcoming, loving, and meaningful experience. From the moment I arrived, everyone at Maximum made me feel like family. The energy, kindness, accommodations, and overall atmosphere were so warm and uplifting. Every experience and visit touched my heart in a special way. From visiting nursing homes, substance abuse facilities, and the HIV clinic, every encounter was memorable and meaningful. Every person I met made an impact on me. Everyone was so welcoming and willing to take me under their wing—teaching me their language, sharing their culture, and allowing me to experience life from a completely different perspective. This experience opened my eyes and gave me a new appreciation for life. It allowed me to see the beauty in people, culture, and community in a way I will never forget. I truly felt the energy of such beautiful people, and if given the opportunity, I would come back and work here to continue making an impact just as we experienced during this journey. A very special thank you to Ellen, our leader and guide. She was absolutely amazing, and I am so grateful for the wonderful experiences and locations she selected for us. Her guidance and care made this trip even more special. I would also love to give a heartfelt thank you to everyone I had the pleasure of meeting: Hector, Karen, Victoria, Jax, Gabby, Kaylee, Maria Arias (thank you for the awesome chicken sandwich!), our amazing driver, Michael, Sharon, and so many others who made us feel welcomed and cared for. Special thanks as well to Dr. Alex, Dr. Tatiana, and Nurse Gerald for taking time out of their busy schedules to teach, guide, and share their knowledge and experiences with us. To every person who participated and made this journey possible: thank you from the bottom of my heart. You made a lasting impact on my life, and I will forever remember this experience. God bless you all!
