A Guide to Language Study Abroad in Singapore
Locations
You will find all language programs offered in Singapore in the diamond-shaped main island, the only one of the country’s 63 islands that allows human settlement. The main island, widely known as Pulau Ujong or Singapore Island, forms the greater part of the country in terms of land area and population. With over 5 million people residing in an area of 710 square kilometres, it is the world’s 31st most densely populated island. But unlike other densely populated countries, Singapore has an extremely high standard of living.
With over 50 percent of its land area covered by greenery, and with four nature reserves and 50 major parks, it has earned the moniker “the Garden City”. The city centre is situated in the south, and is made up of the new Marina Bay area, the Riverside, the Orchard Road shopping area, and the Shenton way financial district, or more popularly known as the Central Business District (CBD).
Sprawling, self-contained residential towns have risen around the modern city centre, but the city centre remains the prime location for language programs in Singapore.
Language Schools in Singapore
Singapore is a linguistically diverse country, with four official languages: English, Mandarin Chinese, Tamil, and Malay. Adding to this linguistic diversity is the foreign population that makes up 38 percent of the country’s total population. The plethora of language programs in Singapore is a reflection of this rich multiculturalism.
English. You will find English language schools in Singapore that emphasize direct communication and language growth through speaking. Teachers encourage students to speak English at least 80 percent of the time, through interactive activities like role playing. This approach is ideal for individuals who want to learn the language and its practical application quickly. There are English language programs in Singapore that are available for students who want to learn the language for both social and academic purposes, busy professionals who don’t have much time to devote to coursework, and individuals who want to learn English leisurely or intensely. There are even English language courses in Singapore for individuals who are preparing for the CPE, CAE, FCE, IELTS, or TOEFL. It is possible to take part-time or full time language lessons in Singapore, or holiday and seasonal courses.
Mandarin Chinese. Language students can learn to speak Mandarin Chinese and write simplified Chinese characters through courses taught by native-speaking and experienced teachers. Chinese language schools in Singapore cater to a myriad of learners, including both individuals and groups, from expats and travelers to students and professionals. Language students can take courses that will teach them essential Mandarin Chinese, how to converse confidently and effectively in everyday conversations, how to read better through intensive reading practices, or business Mandarin tailored to a specific industry.
Other Asian Languages. It is possible to enroll in a range of Asian language courses in Singapore, for all levels of learners. Students can learn Vietnamese, Thai, Malay, Korean, Japanese, and Indonesian. These courses are often offered in small groups, following a comprehensive syllabus and exhaustive assessments, all while taking advantage of the presence of a global blend of nationalities outside the classroom.
European Languages. Language students can choose from a myriad of European language courses offered by language schools in Singapore, particularly Spanish, French, German, Italian, and Russian. Language learners can take individual tuition programs that are tailored to their personal needs and learning objectives, which are ideal for students with limited time or professionals who want to learn at their own pace.
Costs & Affordability
Singapore is known for its high standard of living, and as a very expensive place to live. Nevertheless, there are ways that students can live in Singapore for less, at least slightly.
If you do not have access to a kitchen or are too busy to prepare your own food, you can choose from hawker centres (S$3.50 to 7.00 per meal), which are food stalls grouped together serving basic food and without air conditioning, food courts in malls (S$5 to 10 per meal), more hygienic options than hawker centres and air conditioned, and proper restaurants (S$15 to 100 per meal).
To make transportation more affordable, it is best that you purchase an EZLink card, which offers stored value and can be used for all trains and buses. This will let you travel around the city comfortably for only S$100 per month. Exploring language programs in Singapore that include essentials like accommodations, food, and transportation in up front program costs will also help you save on daily living costs.
Accommodation & Visas
Citizens coming from around 80 percent of the world do not need a visa to travel to Singapore for 30 to 90 days. However, those planning to travel to Singapore must secure a passport valid for six months from the time of departure, sufficient funds for the duration of their stay, a return or onward ticket, and proof of intent to return to their home country.
Most language program providers in Singapore will arrange accommodations for participants, which may be in a homestay with a Singaporean family or in recommended hostels and hotels. You can opt for accommodations that are prearranged and included in the program fee, or attempt to go it on your own (which will be much more expensive most likely).
GoAbroad Insider Tips
Price Tag. Singapore has high standards of healthcare, infrastructure, political stability, cosmopolitan lifestyle, and low crime rates, making it one of the best places to live in the world. This high standard of living comes at a premium though, with the country’s cost of living rising continuously.
Nightlife. While making new friends in the country can be a breeze, with its thriving expat community and celebrated tradition of multiculturalism, bars and entertainment can be pricey. For one, the government levies heavy “sin tax” on alcohol beverages, but you can still find happy hour deals.
Safety. While Singapore is known for its low crime rate, pedestrians and cyclists may have to take extra caution when traveling from place to place. Pedestrians do not have the right of way and cyclists do not have dedicated bike lanes in Singapore. On the other hand, Singapore owes its low crime rate in part to its zero tolerance policy, which can offer disadvantages to people who may have a problem keeping up with rules. Singapore’s rule-bound culture has earned it the double entendre “fine city”. Offences that may be considered harmless in most countries, can translate to a hefty fine or penalty in Singapore.

My wonderful experience at China

4 weeks in Kunming
September 14, 2026by: Colin Luu - GermanySo I‘m currently half-way through my 4 week stay in Kunming and I must admit it has exceeded my expectations so far! When I first arrived I got sick for a few days (hence the new environment and exhaustion). However the Organisator Savannah aswell as my Host Family and Alex (Vice CEO) were very welcoming and provided great hospitality! Thanks to them I was able to recover quickly and start my studies in Kunming. In my opinion Kunming is worth a visit for it‘s beautiful landscape, yummy food, relaxed people and of course the perfect weather. My studies here went flawless and so far I was able to develop my chinese skills quickly thanks to the incredible teaching skills, experience and methods of my teacher Helene. Overall my program here has been going very smoothly and although I am taking one on one lessons I still get to talk to other people such as Alex who takes me out for lunch most days :) The only struggles I have experienced so far were getting used to the new surroundings as well as the rarity of traditional western toilets :P

Thanks so much for your lovely words, Colin. The pictures are great too! We're so pleased you had a blast in Kunming with us. Fancy doing it again sometime? Best wishes, LTL Team
Long-term stay
September 12, 2026by: Nicolas Gehrig - SwitzerlandI stayed a total of three months at LTL Beijing, with a mix of group classes and individual 1-on-1 lessons. The experience as a whole has been very positive, from the registration process (where my assigned student advisor was great) to the lessons themselves, which managed to raise my initially very rusty Mandarin level enough to now be able to get through daily life quite comfortable (including getting a haircut!). A particularly big thank you therefore to my two teachers – Lilian老师 and Sara 老师 – for their patience and engagement! The lessons with them were very interactive, focused, and overall an enjoyable and educative experience – 感谢你们!
Thanks so much for your lovely words, Nicolas :) It was a pleasure to have you in Beijing for 3 months and we'd love to welcome you back one day! Best wishes, LTL Team
Great time in Beihai
September 10, 2026by: Viktorie Visingerová - Czech RepublicThis was the first time I had been on a language stay (I was there for 3 weeks). LTL Beihai school was smaller but very cosy, I got the learning materials from the school, and the teaching style is very individualised (I definitely appreciate that). My teacher Summer is simply the best (I really enjoyed it with her), the headmistress Savanah is very helpful and kind (she tried to organise lots of activities that we students could all do together), and my host family is absolutely amazing (I really felt at home). The city of Beihai has something about it; it is peaceful, but at the same time there are lots of places to go here (shopping centres, night markets, old streets, the beach). I really like it here.
Thanks for your lovely words about our team, the classes and Beihai, Viktorie! We're so pleased you had a fun time with us and we hope to see you again :) LTL Team

A great experience!
August 27, 2026by: Daria Makeeva - RussiaI had the opportunity to spend one month studying at this language school, and overall, I had a very positive experience. From the very beginning, I felt comfortable and welcomed, and I was happy with the atmosphere at the school. The staff were friendly and helpful, and everything was well organized, which made studying much easier and more enjoyable. I would especially like to thank my teacher, Lilia Deng. She is a wonderful teacher who is patient, kind, attentive, and very professional. The lessons were interesting and useful, and I especially appreciated the opportunity to practice speaking. Although I stayed at the school for only one month, I feel that I learned a lot and had a great experience.
Oohhh this is so nice, Lilia will be delighted, Daria! We are thrilled she made your month so enjoyable and that you left feeling like you had really progressed. Thanks so much for taking the time and keep up the great work studying Chinese! LTL Team
A Wonderful Experience in Beihai
August 25, 2026by: Dipesh Purandare - United KingdomI am truly grateful for the wonderful time I spent in Beihai and would like to express my sincerest thanks to every aspect of this trip. From the warm homestay family to the well-organized school program and the breathtaking natural scenery, everything exceeded my expectations. This trip was not just a language learning opportunity, but a life-changing adventure that gave me new perspectives, lasting friendships, and unforgettable memories. First of all, my homestay family was truly amazing. From day one, they warmly welcomed me and made me feel like a member of their family. We spent many quality moments together and participated in many activities that I will never forget. One of the most exciting was surfing it was my first time on a surfboard, and they patiently taught me the basics and encouraged me to enjoy the waves instead of being afraid of them. Riding the waves under their guidance was both thrilling and exhilarating. In the evenings, we often watched movies together, shared popcorn and laughter, and discussed the plot and characters. The children in the family were energetic and adorable; we played basketball almost every day at the nearby court. Those matches were more than just sports; they were opportunities to strengthen bonds. We encouraged each other, shared new skills, and improved our game together. The family's kindness, warmth, and generosity made me feel a deep sense of belonging in a foreign land, making my stay exceptionally special. One of the most unforgettable parts of this trip was visiting their ancestral home in rural China. Unlike the bustling city, it was a tranquil haven embraced by nature. The scenery was breathtaking, lush green mountains stretched gently into the distance, crystal-clear streams meandered through the valleys, and a tranquil reservoir reflected the sky like a perfect mirror. The air was fresh and clean, and the sounds of birdsong and flowing water blended into a soothing natural melody. We took long walks along the reservoir, and I even tried fishing with my family for the first time. The scenery was picturesque, and I couldn't resist taking photos every few minutes. This experience allowed me to deeply appreciate the charm of China's natural beauty and gave me a rare glimpse into authentic rural life, a refreshing contrast to my accustomed fast-paced city life. Next, I'd like to talk about the school,Beihai School, which is equally impressive and professionally managed. The teaching team truly listens to each student's needs and tailors the curriculum accordingly. Whether I wanted to focus on improving my spoken fluency, grammar accuracy, or writing skills, they adjusted the course content to fit my individual goals. Homework assignments were meaningful, reinforcing classroom learning, and teachers provided detailed and constructive feedback on each assignment. What I appreciated most was the class recording system, they recorded the key points, vocabulary, and grammar structures of each lesson and shared them with us promptly, allowing me to review them anytime and never fall behind. The teachers' explanations were always clear, patient, and easy to understand, greatly boosting my confidence. The entire program was exceptionally well-organized, from the daily schedule to extracurricular activities and weekend outings. A perfect balance was struck between study and leisure, ensuring we learned effectively while also having ample time to relax and enjoy life. Furthermore, the administrative team, especially the sales department, performed admirably in every aspect. Whether via email or instant messaging, they responded to my inquiries almost instantly, never keeping me waiting. Before I even arrived, they answered all my questions about the program, accommodation, transportation, and even local customs with remarkable clarity and patience. Throughout my studies, they followed up regularly to ensure everything went smoothly and promptly addressed any minor issues I raised. Their professionalism, efficiency, and genuine care made the entire process completely stress-free, allowing me to fully immerse myself in my studies and enjoy my time. In short, this trip to Beihai perfectly blended cultural immersion, academic growth, and nature exploration. I not only returned home with significantly improved language skills but also gained lifelong memories and friends from all over the world. I highly recommend this program to anyone seeking an authentic, enriching, and truly transformative experience in China. Thank you to my host family, the school staff, and everyone who made this trip unforgettable. I will definitely be back!
Surfing for the first time, fishing at a rural reservoir and playing basketball with the family every evening! It's been some adventure with you, Dipesh!! We are thrilled Beihai delivered so much beyond the classroom! Thanks so much for taking the time to share such a wonderful review. Keep up the great work studying Chinese and we cannot wait to welcome you back! LTL Team
非常经历 在北京 ! Great linguistic immersion In Beijing
August 23, 2026by: J Fitremann - FranceOur daughter spent a month at the LTL School Summer Camp in July and August. Her stay went very well. The school is very well organised, whether in terms of airport transfers, the quality of the host families, or visiting Beijing and afternoon activities. The morning lessons were also very effective and my daughter made great progress in Chinese. We recommend warmely this school and would like to thank them for the high standard of their programme.

We're so pleased your daughter had the best time with us in Beijing :) We'd love to welcome you all back next year!! LTL Team
Amazing experience at LTL Kunming school
August 22, 2026by: Antoni Jerzmanowski - PolandFrom July 13th to August 8th, I attended an LTL Mandarin language course as part of their full-immersion program in Kunming, China. During my stay, I lived with a wonderful host family where I had my own private room. My host family provided me with breakfast and dinner every day. Furthermore, they often took me out to local restaurants, which allowed me to discover many authentic Yunnan dishes and delicious spices. I took the standard 1-on-1 individual course (4 hours a day, 5 days a week). Commuting to school was very convenient: the nearest metro station was located just 1 km from my homestay—an easy, walkable distance—and the metro ride itself took only around 15 to 20 minutes. Classes took place in a modern business center where LTL rents classrooms. Every room was equipped with air conditioning or a fan, making the study environment very comfortable. My lessons usually ran from 9:30 am to 1:30 pm, but I really appreciated the flexibility to adjust the schedule according to my preferences, which is ideal for anyone who prefers starting later in the day. For instance, a fellow student had her classes scheduled in the afternoon from 1:30 pm to 5:30 pm. On some days, lessons even took place in other locations, such as quiet and cozy local cafés. From a psychological and learning perspective, this change of scenery was a huge advantage, as switching up the environment helped me stay focused and retain new vocabulary much better. Speaking of the classes, I was extremely satisfied with the teaching quality. I was able to learn a tremendous amount thanks to my teacher, Yumi. She was always well prepared, professional, and created a warm, encouraging atmosphere. Yumi practiced Chinese characters, speaking, and reading comprehension with me. She also shared valuable cultural context for various topics, which helped me understand the language on a much deeper level. Outside the classroom, LTL organized fantastic extracurricular activities for students. Savannah, the head of the Kunming branch, arranged diverse events such as authentic Kung Fu training, a trip to the famous Flower Market, cinema outings, and traditional bracelet making. I truly appreciated the friendly and welcoming vibe; Savannah treated all of us like friends rather than just students, making everyone feel relaxed and at home. Additionally, whenever new students arrived in Kunming, the staff hosted a welcome lunch so everyone could easily connect with the newcomers. Kunming is an underrated, truly remarkable city for studying Chinese. Unlike megacities like Beijing or Shanghai where many people speak basic English, very few locals in Kunming speak English. This makes it the ultimate environment for a full-immersion program. The locals are warm, easygoing, and thrilled when they hear a foreigner speaking Chinese. They often strike up small talk, which helps immensely with building real-world fluency. For example, I got along great with the Kung Fu master whom I met during one of the after-class activities. Overall, I am thoroughly satisfied with my experience at LTL Kunming. I learned a huge amount of new things, boosted my language skills, and met amazing people. If you are looking for high-quality language teaching, dedicated staff, and an unforgettable adventure in China, I wholeheartedly recommend LTL in Kunming!

Great pics and a wonderful review! Thanks so much for sharing, Antek 🙂 We loved having you in Kunming and we hope you keep studying hard back home!! LTL Team
I definitely recommend!
August 21, 2026by: Zuzanna Zając - PolandI chose LTL Chengdu and came here for two weeks only - sadly, because it should have been longer! I got the Homestay option and the Survival Kit. My homestay host was very welcoming and I enjoyed my time with her and her pets. I had 1on1 classes everyday, two classes per day. The school was very nice, there is a common area for all students. I had classes with teacher Guo Xinyue, who was really kind, and classes with her were a pleasure. The teaching materials were probided by the school, and the teacher explained everything in an understandable way. The school organized social activities - I personally did not participate because I wanted to explore the city, but it was an option. For most of my sightseeing I used the recommendations provided by LTL. In short, I had a great time and everything was very professional!
Love to hear it, Zuzia! We really enjoyed having you in Chengdu with us and hope you keep up the great work with your Mandarin skills 🙂 LTL Team
Learn Chinese from hardworking and skilled teachers
August 21, 2026by: Noah Zvonek - AustriaMy experience at LTL Language school was a wonderful one. Besides noticeably improving my Chinese skills, I was able to meet wonderful people both teachers and students and experience the local culture in a way I couldn't have otherwise. My respect and admiration lies in the workers and volunteers that make the school what it is.
Love to hear it, Noah :) So pleased you had a great time with us and we'd love you to come back soon. Keep up the great work. LTL Team
LTL Chengdu
August 16, 2026by: Konrad Stone - IrelandI spent a total of 12 weeks at LTL Chengdu, and coming here was honestly one of the best decisions I've made. When I arrived I was around the beginning of a HSK 4 Level, and by the time I left I passed a HSK 4 test and was handling HSK 5 material with no great effort. The combination of intensive learning, and a homestay environment was powerful in pushing my Mandarin further. Without this combination, I sincerely doubt my Mandarin would ever have gotten to where it is today in such a short period of time I'd like to thank my teachers during my time at LTL, in particular my teachers Meng, Alex and Guo. I took a combination of group classes and 1:1, and my teachers always found a way to make the lessons both enjoyable whilst always pushing me into that next level of Chinese comprehension. The school environment itself is a great way of meeting other students, which was a highlight of my time at Chengdu. The school organises weekly events, which are also a great way of meeting both other students and local people as the school organises a "buddy" system to have locals at the events. I'd also like to thank teachers Pan Pan and Stiles for making the school environment so friendly and welcoming. Every weekend at Chengdu was spent with the friends I made at the school, and some great memories were made. These are friends I'll continue to be in touch with going into the future. Overall, I'd highly recommend LTL Chengdu to anybody considering it. I can testify to it's effectiveness in improving my Mandarin, and also to how enjoyable my time was there in general.
What a 12 weeks it was, Conrad! Thanks for such a lovely review, it was such a pleasure to have you study with us and we're delighted the feelings mutual :) Keep up the great work back home. LTL Team
Great way to push your Chinese to the next level!
August 15, 2026by: Piet Weinreich - GermanyI booked a 60 hour, 1 week 1:1 mandarin class and I have to say that the experience has been fantastic. The school is well organized, convenienly located and all of the staff are extremely friendly and helpful. Best of all was my teacher Lily Laoshi who managed to really bring me forward in my struggles with the Chinese language. She is a very experienced teacher that can easily adapt to any specific topics or focus you request. She always was extremely well prepared and ensured that I kept motivated by combining by-the-book excercises with exercises covering topics closer to me (like work, family, fiends, weekend activities in Beijing etc). Highly recommended.

As intensive as it comes! It was a pleasure to have you study with us in Beijing even just for such a short amount of time. Hope to see you back again soon :) LTL Team
Highly immersive mandarin course
August 14, 2026by: Sebastien Ribarovski - Czech RepublicI recently completed my Mandarin course in Singapore with Teacher Chen. Although Singapore is known for its high level of English proficiency, the classes were highly immersive and conducted almost entirely in Mandarin. This approach allowed me to make progress much faster than I would have in a standard English-to-Mandarin class. In my opinion Singapore is very good choice for solo travelers as it is very developed and safe country. Based on my experience, I can highly recommend studying with LTL in Singapore, especially if you are looking for an immersive and effective way to improve your Mandarin.
Love to hear it Sebastien! Thanks for your kind words. We're so happy you enjoyed learning Chinese in Singapore with us. Come back soon :) LTL Team
Best teacher ever!
August 07, 2026by: Sam Bevacqua - AustraliaI was at LTL school in Chengdu and had Guo Xinyue as my teacher. She is the best teacher I’ve ever had across high school university and now language school. The program is extremely flexible and takes into account your personal needs and level, and the teacher is so kind and even when I got sick helped me navigate China! Even giving me a present to take to my parents upon leaving the school! Couldn’t recommend the school and Guo Xinyue enough! Really will accelerate your language skills in a short time. The atmosphere and friendliness of all the staff and students also stood out.

Thanks for the lovely review, Sam! We really enjoyed having you a part of our Chengdu community :) Hope to see you come back someday. LTL Team
