<h3>What inspired you to work for <a href=https://www.goabroad.com/providers/middlebury-c-v-starr rel="" target="_self" class="link">Middlebury - C.V. Starr Schools Abroad</a>?</h3>
<p>During the summer between my sophomore and junior year while studying for my BA in Secondary Education at SUNY Oswego, I attended the Oswego program in Madrid, Spain. That changed my life.&nbsp;</p>
<p>I returned to Spain after graduating to teach English as a Second Language, then returned to the US to teach high school Spanish. I returned to Spain to study for my MA in Spanish at Middlebury College in Madrid, and then was hired as the Assistant Director and eventually became Director.</p>
<p>The Middlebury program was absolutely the best option for perfecting my Spanish and taking it to the highest level. The combination of the stellar classes with brilliant professors and out-of-class learning was perfect for learning Spanish!</p>
<h3>What advice would you tell your pre-travel self?</h3>
<p>My advice is the same that I have told the hundreds of students that I have advised over the years: surround yourself with the language and immerse yourself in the community. Find your doors of opportunity to communicate with people of all ages.&nbsp;</p>
<p>No matter what level of Spanish you have, create a new identity for yourself in Spanish. Make as many mistakes as possible, because that is where the learning comes from. Listen, observe, participate, laugh, cry, play sports, go to concerts, find a new hobby. Each experience will give you new ways to acquire Spanish.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Above all, be open to new ways of looking at yourself and at the world. Your perspective on life, your worldviews, your beliefs and values will change for the better.</p>

<h3>Describe a typical day at work.</h3>
<p>"Typical" is not a word that I would use to describe my day! Every day is different, and every day is exciting.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Advising students as they acclimate to a new language and culture is one of the most satisfyingly complicated jobs to have. Students come to my office with questions, fears, excitement, and ups and downs born of the struggle to express themselves in a language that is hard to manage. My job, as I see it, is to help students learn to work their way toward accepting how others see them and how they see others.&nbsp;</p>
<p>There is a lot of bureaucracy to be done each day (accounting, academic administration, health and safety issues, organization of cultural travel and activities), but it is the daily contact with students that is the most important part of my day. Listening to their self-discoveries (complicated sometimes), hearing about their relationship with the language and the culture (even more complicated), and just seeing the joy of participating in a different social scene is very satisfying.</p>
<h3>Why do you do what you do?</h3>
<p>I do what I do, and have done so, for 45 years. I love it; even the problematic moments are a learning experience for me, still after all of these years. I am an eternal study abroad student myself.&nbsp;</p>
<p>I recall vividly every moment of my first experience in Spain, and I hope to help students find their own love for Spain, no matter how challenging it is.</p>
<h3>What is your favorite part of your job?</h3>
<p>Watching students evolve over the semester; linguistically, socially, and personally, and knowing that my work in the program plays a significant role in their evolution.</p>
<h3>How do you use your education and international background in your current role?</h3>
<p>I use it every single day. I have a Ph.D. in Foreign Language Education, so helping students to improve their level of Spanish is my career goal and personal satisfaction.&nbsp;</p>
<p>My own study abroad experience and continued living and learning in Spain mold everything that I do with and for students.</p>
<h3>What challenges do you often face and how do you overcome them?</h3>
<p>The biggest challenges have to do with helping students adapt to different ways of using their five (or six) senses.&nbsp;</p>
<p>They come with very defined backgrounds, and those are sometimes almost impossible to become permeable enough in a semester to be able to really appreciate and enjoy their time in Spain. I have had the deepest conversations with students about this, and it is a challenge for me to help them through it and at the same time be sensitive to their ideas and feelings.</p>
<h3>What are some current projects you are working on?</h3>
<p>Creating new academic tracks in Neuroscience and Global Health, and hopefully, Performing Arts.</p>

<h3>Are there any developments with Middlebury - C.V. Starr Schools Abroad that you would like to share with us?</h3>
<p>The program in Cordoba is becoming a destination for students who want a more authentic experience with excellent on-site support.</p>
<h3>What makes Middlebury - C.V. Starr Schools Abroad easy to market to potential participants?</h3>
<p>It really is what students are looking for.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Sometimes they need to see that it is not as daunting as it looks, but that is easy because we provide such strong student support while respecting their independence and autonomy.</p>

<h3>What do you hope participants take away from your programs?</h3>
<p>I sincerely hope, and usually see, that students gain much greater self-confidence in using the language. That is usually the most common observation at the end of the semester. I also hope that they come to feel that they have been successful in navigating and participating in a different culture from the inside, not just as an outside observer.&nbsp;</p>
<p>They may or may not change how they think and what they believe in, but I hope that they will at the very least examine their ideas through a new lens and then use that lens to make decisions that will affect their future.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Finally, I hope that participants learn how to help others to learn languages and to become more interculturally adept, passing on what they have learned.</p>
<h3>Why is it important for people to travel abroad and experience new cultures?</h3>
<p>Travel abroad is a critical step toward self-discovery and greater confidence in skills that they will use in their future.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Most people will need to work in an international context in the future, or at least with people of different cultures and languages. Travel abroad is no guarantee that people will change how they think or feel, but at least it is an opportunity to pose questions to oneself and to reconsider what one has always thought.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Meeting different people and listening to what they say can, sometimes, be a way to see others In a different light. There is nothing like putting oneself in someone else's shoes to help put one's own life in perspective. Walking a mile in the shoes of others is truly life-changing.</p>
<h3>How do you help support participants?</h3>
<p>By helping them find ways to integrate into the local language and culture.&nbsp;</p>
<h3>If you could participate on one of Middlebury - C.V. Starr Schools Abroad's programs, where would you go and what would you do?</h3>
<p>Japan. Learn the language and visit Japanese gardens.</p>
<h3>What questions do participants often ask you, and how do you typically respond?</h3>
<p>They often ask about my own background in language and study abroad. I think that they are interested in how and why someone from the States would move to a different country and how real, long-term immersion works.</p>
<h3>Why do you think learning a new language is important?</h3>
<p>It opens your mind to a different way of thinking and perceiving the world.</p>
<h3>What does meaningful travel mean to you?</h3>
<p>Meaningful travel means being open to completely unbiased observation and participation. It means putting your ideas and beliefs aside and then mixing new ideas and beliefs in with those you already possess.&nbsp;</p>
<p>It means meeting people of different ages, socioeconomic backgrounds, careers, and really getting to know them. It means taking every opportunity to use the language and explore why things are like they are in the local, regional, and national contexts.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Travel is more than just seeing monuments. It is using the five senses to perceive differences and to appreciate new sensations. Meaningful travel means breaking out of your box and letting light shine on new paths to take.</p>

<h3>What advice do you have for individuals thinking about going abroad?</h3>
<p>Go anywhere, and the longer the stay, the better. Above all, learn the language before, during, and after, and use it to explore.</p>
<h3>What issues do you see in the world of international education that don't line up with your values and expectations for mutually beneficial &amp; educational relationships between programs and the communities in which they are located within?</h3>
<p>Programs that do not prioritize learning the local language. Programs that do not facilitate or require that students carry out activities that immerse them in the culture. Programs that prioritize profit over meaningful learning.</p>
<h3>What does ethical global engagement mean to you?</h3>
<p>Be the best person possible in dealing with others. That means be open and tolerant, and treat others as you would have them treat you if the circumstances were reversed.</p>
<h3>What hopes do you have for the future of international education?</h3>
<p>More students, more language, more culture, and higher academic standards.</p>
<h3>What qualities in program &amp; host community relations are important to you? (And Middlebury - C.V. Starr Schools Abroad?)</h3>
<p>It should be a close-knit community that involves host families, local university partners, and local businesses where students can intern. It should be a two-way street.</p>

<h3>What inspired you to go abroad?</h3>
<p>I stayed local for my internship, but I still feel that traveling abroad is important. I think going abroad is important culturally, as immersing yourself in other people's way of life is crucial to expanding your perspective on the world.&nbsp;</p>
<p>I chose to work with <a href=https://www.goabroad.com/providers/artbound-initiative rel="" target="_self" class="link">ArtBound Initiative</a> because I know how important having the right connections can be in the workforce. More than that, however, I trusted in their ability to provide me with the right lessons and knowledge I needed in order to be properly prepared for the creative industry. It was worth the cost in my opinion, as the two internships I had gave me the necessary experience needed to continue being in the NYC industry.&nbsp;</p>

<p>On top of that, I am forever a part of an incredible network of people all over the world with varying specialties and capabilities. I get to connect with them, befriend them, learn from them, and more. The community that ArtBound Initiative provides you is special.&nbsp;</p>
<h3>Why did you choose <a href=https://www.goabroad.com/providers/artbound-initiative/programs/creative-internships-in-new-york-154464 rel="" target="_self" class="link">Creative Internships in New York</a>?</h3>
<p>I chose Entertainment &amp; Media and Advertising &amp; Communications, as that is what I am passionate about. I love being creative, and being able to do that for work made the experience that much better.&nbsp;</p>
<p>I went to school for these industries, and I know how difficult it can be to get a job in NYC. I wanted to get hands-on experience in the creative agency world so I could figure out what aspect specifically stood out to me the most, in hopes that I'd be able to use that experience to get a full-time job doing what I love. I want to be in production, whether that be creative agency work or entertainment agency work.&nbsp;</p>
<p>I knew that ArtBound would be able to help me land a role in one of those fields, and they did, and I had a great experience at a creative agency, which then turned into my first adult job.</p>
<h3>What was your favorite part about New York City?</h3>
<p>My favorite part about NYC is how bustling it is. You are surrounded by possibilities; you just need to know where to look.&nbsp;</p>
<p>New York City is such a mixed bag of culture and experiences you don't get anywhere else, and that makes it exciting. You can become a part of a community unlike anything else I've seen. NYC and subsequently NJ are becoming new hubs for the creative industry, and especially film, so the job possibilities are increasing.&nbsp;</p>
<p>While the market may be competitive, there will always be a good fit for you; you just need to know where to find it, and as someone who wants to move to NYC, ArtBound Initiative became the right choice when I learned how well-connected they are there. I feel that I am able to make the most of my ArtBound lessons and connections, and follow the right career path for me.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Work life aside, the personal life aspect of NYC is really appealing. There's always something to do, new places to go with your friends, and food waiting to be discovered. NYC is a cultural hub, and ArtBound gave me a way to start building a life there.&nbsp;</p>

<h3>What made your experience abroad extraordinary?</h3>
<p>As I wrote earlier, I stayed local for my internships, but I think the part of my experience that was extraordinary was when I first got to meet a bunch of other people who were also part of ABI. Knowing that I am connected with other professionals through this community is amazing.</p>
<p>I got to learn from other people about their home places, perspectives, and work experiences. I have so much fun every time I participate in an ABI activity, and I really enjoy connecting with those who attend as well. That sense of community is an extraordinary part.&nbsp;</p>
<h3>How did local staff support you throughout your program?</h3>
<p>My NYC Coordinator was so lovely. She was always there to answer any questions I had, and when she hosted events, they were always fun. It was through her that I was able to befriend people I still talk to frequently, and I still attend the events she plans even as an alumnus.&nbsp;</p>
<p>When I was facing difficulties and needed a professional and friendly opinion on how to handle said difficulty, she was easy to reach and quick to respond. She provides a sense of belonging in a city where you're surrounded by so many strangers it can feel lonely.&nbsp;</p>
<h3>What's one thing you wish you would have done differently during your time abroad?</h3>
<p>I wish I would have reached out to a few more people, including in the ArtBound Initiative. Don't get me wrong, I made friends, but I think I could have befriended even more people also actively living in NYC.&nbsp;</p>
<p>I wish I had taken a couple more risks. By that I mean, I wish I would have gone out of my way to participate in more indie events, such as tagging along at shoots, or applying for short-term PA work, just to try something new.&nbsp;</p>
<h3>Describe what a typical day in your life abroad looked like.</h3>

<p>I would wake up, do my typical morning routine to get ready for the day, and then hop on the train to work. My commute wasn't terrible, and I would switch between driving and using public transit.&nbsp;</p>
<p>The nature of my job had me constantly switching up what I was doing, and so I usually wasn't doing the same thing every day. Typically, I'd make my way to my work's headquarters and go through the day's plans with my supervisor, who was the owner of the company.&nbsp;</p>
<p>We would start with administrative duties, like responding to emails, and then we'd transition into our client work for the day. I was either in meetings with our client, leading our creative team, or out in the field doing production work.&nbsp;</p>
<p>We had politically aligned clients (that was my favorite experience), indie film clients, and commercial advertising clients. I did a mix of production work (think script writing and filming), account management (working directly with the clients to discuss and manage deliverables), and team management (leading our team through each of our campaigns.</p>
<p>After work, I would either go home or find something to do. I would grab dinner and drinks with coworkers, or go to a museum, or literally anything else exciting I could find on the internet. My days were never boring.</p>
<p>I was in a bit of an atypical position though, as I worked for a startup, so I had an exciting position and workload in the company for being an intern. That creative agency work turned into my first job, and the experience has been amazing and will help me move on to the next part of my career.&nbsp;</p>
<h3>What did you enjoy doing during your free time abroad?</h3>
<p>When I wasn't working, I would work on my own personal pursuits, that being music. I am an independent artist (Samantha Jean on all streaming platforms), and I would use my free time to write, produce, or perform. NYC is a music hub, so I spent a lot of time going to small shows and meeting other indie artists.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Living in such a digitized world, it can be hard not to compare yourself to other people, but by actually putting yourself out there and meeting others, you will learn that you are not alone and how lovely the community can be. People just want to support each other, and it can be heartwarming. I get motivated by musical experiences, so I am always doing something related to music, be it an open mic or visiting a music store.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Aside from music, I would explore the city with my ArtBound friends! One time I took the ferry into Brooklyn with one of my Kiwi friends, and she and I spent the day just walking around and exploring local museums.&nbsp;</p>
<p>There is nothing to do. I've gone to karaoke with ArtBound friends, explored the parks, or traveled out of the city to explore surrounding states. The nice thing too, is that not everything costs exorbitant amounts of money. You can definitely have fun on a budget.&nbsp;</p>

<h3>What type of accommodation did you have? What did you like best about it?</h3>
<p>Since I stayed local, I lived at my parents' house and used public transit to get to and from my internship. I am very lucky to have a family that can support me and is happy to let me stay at their place until I get my own.&nbsp;</p>
<p>I will say, my internship experience gave me a lot of opportunity to explore, and helped me determine where I would like to get my own place and settle in for now.&nbsp;</p>
<h3>What is one thing every future participant should know about your program before their program begins?</h3>
<p>The ArtBound Initiative education program will actually benefit you. I learned problem-solving skills that helped me when something went wrong during my internship. Especially if you are working in production, be prepared for anything.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Things are constantly changing, and there will absolutely be at least one time when something drastic happens, and you need to adjust for it. The good thing is, you will likely be working with people who are used to things switching up, so there is no need to panic. Also remember not to take things personally. You will probably make a mistake, but that doesn't mean anything about you as a person. If you are new to the industry of your choice, you will learn so much! It is okay to make a mistake, as long as you learn from it.&nbsp;</p>
<p>That stuff aside, make sure to connect with everyone you meet, either through LinkedIn or social media. You never know who your next job can come from. Most people are happy to support those who are still new to the industry, because they were also in your position once.&nbsp;</p>
<h3>Would you recommend ArtBound Initiative to others? Why?</h3>
<p>Yes, and I have recommended ArtBound to other people. The program costs money, yes, but I learned skills and gained professional connections that college can't always provide. At least, that was my experience.&nbsp;</p>
<p>ArtBound gave me space to explore my options and figure out what it is I want to do for work right now. I also got not just one, but two internships at the same time, both in my dream industries. I think that speaks for itself on how hard their team works to assist you in getting work in a highly competitive market. Having the right connections is incredibly important, and they give you a leg up in that department.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Work experiences aside, ArtBound gives you a lifelong network of people you can connect with and befriend. I've been able to apply to other jobs through their network, and eventually, I'll be able to be an alumnus who helps the newbies get work in their dream field.&nbsp;</p>
<h3>What do you feel the biggest benefit of traveling abroad is?</h3>
<p>Traveling abroad expands your world, quite literally. Exposing yourself to a culture that is different from your own is imperative to becoming a well-rounded and open-minded person. Plus, traveling is not easy, and if you can be a part of a program that will do the majority of the work for you, you should.&nbsp;</p>
<p>When you are young, I believe it is important to challenge your comfort levels and learn to be independent by leaving where you've spent your whole life until this point. Plus you'll gain experiences not everyone can say they've had, and it may lead you to your dream life!</p>

<h3>Now that you're home, how has your time abroad impacted your life?</h3>
<p>Unfortunately, I cannot answer this question, but I can speak on my friends' experiences abroad. I have a couple of friends who came to NYC for their internships, and I was able to discuss this with them when I last spoke with them.</p>
<p>For my one friend, she explained to me how traveling abroad for her internship was her first time coming to the East Coast, and it took her a while to adjust to the fast-paced environment of New York City.</p>
<p>&nbsp;However, she learned what kind of environment she wants to live in, and what kind of work she wants to be doing in the future. She hopes to come back to the US in the future, but she is glad she got the travel experience and got to immerse herself in the cultural hub.&nbsp;</p>
<h3>What does meaningful travel mean to you?</h3>
<p>I've already alluded to this, but I believe meaningful travel means using your ability to travel to learn and try something new. We can get so stuck in what we are currently experiencing, where we are living, who we are living with, etc, and a change of pace will completely change that.&nbsp;</p>
<p>I personally want to experience everything I can to learn more and become more well-rounded as a person, and traveling will do that. Being open-minded is key, because if you are closed off to the rest of the world, how will you grow?&nbsp;</p>
<p>I believe that being alive means to actually live, explore, and experience new things so we can hear other perspectives, expose ourselves to other cultures, and ultimately find our place in the world.&nbsp;</p>
<p>There is so much more happening in the world than whatever is revolving around you, and leaving that comfort zone is imperative. You will never learn what is out there waiting for you if you don't explore.&nbsp;</p>

<h3>What inspired you to work for <a href=https://www.goabroad.com/providers/beyond-travels rel="" target="_self" class="link">Beyond Travels</a>?&nbsp;</h3>
<p>I was formerly an intern with Beyond Travels. I spent three months in the Amazon region of Ecuador, living with a host family and learning about the local agroforestry system from Indigenous farmers. The experience was challenging but incredibly rewarding, and ultimately influenced much of my academic and professional trajectory.</p>
<p>Years later, I reconnected with the organization, which led to me working here. I am inspired by the opportunity to learn from the communities we partner with, who share so much of their traditions and knowledge, and by getting to live and work in an environment that constantly pushes me to grow.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>
<p>I also really appreciate connecting with our interns and supporting their adjustment and immersion processes, as I can remember what the experience was like for myself many years ago.</p>

<h3>What advice would you tell your pre-travel self?</h3>
<p>I would tell my pre-travel self not to be afraid to take risks.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Leaving on a solo adventure can seem daunting, especially as a young person. Growing up in the U.S., we don’t have such a strong culture of independent travel for youth. As a student, I got inspired by other travelers on social media and developed a goal to go on a backpacking trip to Asia after graduating from university.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>
<p>Ultimately, by first completing my internship with Beyond Travels, a more organized and guided experience, I gained the confidence and independence to take the backpacking trip after graduation.&nbsp;</p>
<p>I have since traveled to over 17 countries with friends and as a solo female traveler. I might never have done this without my initial experience interning abroad.&nbsp;</p>
<h3>Why should someone choose Beyond Travels over competitors?&nbsp;</h3>
<p>We are a small organization run by a few dedicated staff members. Because of this, our programs are generally quite customizable and personalized. We develop your internship focus and projects through a collaborative approach with partners and based on our understanding of your goals established in the interview and pre-departure process.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Our programs were also developed through deep personal connections, first in Ecuador and now in our expanded locations.&nbsp;</p>
<p>If you participate in a Beyond Travels program, you become part of a network of community members and resources that support your learning journey and are backed by genuine personal connections. This is something our larger competitors cannot offer.</p>

<h3>What is Beyond Travels' mission and how do you continue to work toward it?&nbsp;</h3>
<p>Our mission is to create immersive travel experiences that support farmers and local communities by honoring traditional knowledge and diversifying livelihoods. I work toward this mission by training interns to be culturally sensitive and contribute positively to their host communities.&nbsp;</p>
<p>For many interns, it can be their first experience spending prolonged time in a different cultural setting, and they may need some guidance. We approach cultural sensitivity with in-depth training during orientation, as well as weekly check-ins with interns and host communities.&nbsp;</p>
<p>We make meaningful contributions to partner organizations by working closely with partners and interns to align learning objectives with organizational needs. The results are internship activities that support both interns’ professional development goals and the partner organization’s daily needs and objectives.&nbsp;</p>
<h3>How do you help support participants?&nbsp;</h3>
<p>I support participants as a mentor and as a liaison to their host community. As part of Beyond Travel's team, our longstanding relationships with partners enable participants to enter their immersion experience with community trust and support.&nbsp;</p>
<p>I support participants during the pre-departure process by providing information, setting expectations, and answering questions via video calls or email. As the onsite supervisor for our Amazon programs, I guide orientation and training to set participants up for success.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Throughout their experience, I provide continued mentorship through weekly check-ins and joining them on program excursions to maximize learning opportunities.&nbsp;</p>

<h3>What do you hope participants take away from your programs?&nbsp;</h3>
<p>I hope participants leave with stronger confidence and the ability to adapt to unfamiliar environments with ease. Our programs build cross-cultural adaptation skills by placing participants in a supportive environment while also pushing them outside their comfort zones.</p>
<p>Even small things, like learning how to navigate the bus system in a foreign country, can translate into major confidence boosts and valuable skills that can be applied in future experiences abroad and back home.&nbsp;</p>
<p>I also hope participants leave with a deeper appreciation of the communities that steward our planet’s land and produce our food, as well as better tools to engage with different cultures in a thoughtful manner.&nbsp;</p>
<h3>Why is it important for people to travel abroad and experience new cultures?&nbsp;</h3>

<p>Experiencing new cultures helps us to become better citizens of the world, as it teaches empathy, respect for different ways of living, and appreciation for diversity.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Travel has pushed me to consider other perspectives, societal norms, and beliefs that differ from those I was raised with. It has also repeatedly shown me that people are kind, willing to help, and that the world is not as scary a place as it may seem.</p>
<p>I believe if more people worldwide had the privilege to travel, it would create less fear, more understanding, and a more peaceful global society.</p>
<p>However, it's important to remember that we can also travel locally and within our own nations, and this can still broaden our perspectives.&nbsp;</p>
<h3>What does meaningful travel mean to you?&nbsp;</h3>
<p>To me, meaningful travel is about slowing down. Although it’s an amazing privilege to travel and see different parts of the world, my most memorable travel experiences have always been about the quality of time I spent rather than the quantity of destinations I visited.&nbsp;</p>
<p>By slowing down and allowing more time to connect with local people, I have developed more meaningful connections and a deeper understanding of each place I visit.&nbsp;</p>
<p>I also personally love documenting my travel experiences through journaling, photography, and other creative expressions. While in the moment you may think you’ll remember every detail, you’ll be surprised one day by what you forget with time! Documenting my travels also allows me to process and reflect on my experiences more deeply.&nbsp;</p>

<h3>What inspired you to go abroad?</h3>
<p>Being from Russia, especially its Asian part, I always loved and kind of had to travel because Russia is a huge country. If you wanted to go somewhere, the distances are enormous: several planes, a couple of buses, and maybe even a boat.&nbsp;</p>
<p>I traveled throughout the country and abroad for various swimming competitions my whole life. For example, a championship in Saint Petersburg, swim camps in Kyrgyzstan, or a competition in Germany were parts of my life, so, I was not scared, but excited to go to the USA, a country on the other side of the planet, to study and to swim.</p>
<p>After 1 year of a marvelous swimming season, my university decided to discontinue the swimming program. I was way more than devastated, but knew that I had to move on with my life. That is when I went to the office of Stacie Freeman, the head of the study abroad programs at the university, to ask about semesters abroad. And that moment was pivotal.</p>

<h3>Why did you choose <a href=https://www.goabroad.com/providers/bethel-university-global-studies-2 rel="" target="_self" class="link">Bethel University Global Studies</a>?</h3>
<p>That day at her office, Mrs. Stacie really connected with my story. She was (and still is) caring, loving, and eager to help me get the maximum out of my American experience.&nbsp;</p>
<p>First, we had discussed the volunteering trip to Colombia in May of 2025. She explained it so colorfully, with a million details, and showed me pictures. As a Russian, for whom Colombia is something way farther than even the other side of the planet, of course decided to go.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Mrs. Freeman helped me apply for all of the possible scholarships, and I went there. Spent there and amazing week, learned so much new. And what do you think? I came back to the university and to her office to learn about the next trip—and that was <a href=https://www.goabroad.com/providers/bethel-university-global-studies-2/programs/cliffs-to-castles-a-global-studies-journey-through-ireland-198564 rel="" target="_self" class="link">Ireland and Scotland</a>.&nbsp;</p>
<h3>What was your favorite part about Ireland &amp; Scotland?</h3>

<p>Technically, we were in 2 countries: Ireland and the UK, but in 3 regions/countries inside of a country: Ireland, Northern Ireland, and Scotland. I loved every part of it.&nbsp;</p>
<p>My favorite city now is Edinburgh, even though we spent only 1 day there; I absolutely fell in love with that city. Scotland is such a beautiful country. And I would say that the highlight of the Edinburgh trip was not a guided tour (which was still awesome), but the time we had to wander around the city by ourselves.&nbsp;</p>
<p>I dived into the culture, visited ancient graveyards, astonishing castles, churches, and had a photoshoot in a kilt!!! Yes, not to mention that my internal Harry Potter lover was dying out of happiness.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Even the gray, rainy weather was such an amazing addition to the local architecture—I think that they have to work in pairs.&nbsp;</p>
<h3>What made your experience abroad extraordinary?</h3>
<p>I am used to traveling alone. After each semester, I was going home to Russia, and after so many times, you would even forget what it is like to travel with someone. But these trips taught me that traveling in a group or with someone really changes not only the quality of the trip but also your perspective on the place because you have people to share emotions with.&nbsp;</p>
<p>That is exactly what happened during the trip. I have made so many new friends that we were in a moment with.</p>
<h3>How did local staff support you throughout your program?</h3>

<p>We had an amazing tour guide, Harry, who was with us at all times. He was telling us interesting stories and historical details, so that we would have a better understanding of the place.</p>
<p>By the end, all of us really became close with him. Not to mention, in Edinburgh, when he realized my love for Harry Potter, he gifted me a butter beer, JUST LIKE IN HARRY POTTER! IN THE CITY WHERE HE WAS CREATED! I was on the seventh cloud, as we say.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Also, each of the guides we had only in a certain place was extremely professional, and you can kind of see that they love what they do.&nbsp;</p>
<h3>What's one thing you wish you would have done differently during your time abroad?</h3>
<p>Honestly, the only thing I would want is an extra day in Edinburgh. That one day felt so incredibly precious, though; it forced us to run in every single moment and explore like crazy. It made every minute count, and in a weird way, that intensity made the experience even more memorable and special.</p>
<h3>Describe what a typical day in your life abroad looked like.</h3>
<p>Non-travel days meant breakfast around 9-10 AM, then followed by a guided tour. Lunch was our free time to eat and wander by ourselves.&nbsp;</p>
<p>After that, we would meet for either a 5-6 PM tour or a 7-8 PM dinner. A very good blend of planned activity and your own discovery without having to wait for others.&nbsp;</p>
<h3>What did you enjoy doing during your free time abroad?</h3>
<p>My favorite free time activity was just wandering. I loved getting lost in the city without a map or any plan, just letting curiosity guide me. It really felt like discovering hidden gems and experiencing the city authentically. Even at times when I was spending that free time with someone in a group.</p>

<h3>What type of accommodation did you have? What did you like best about it?</h3>
<p>Our accommodations were just fantastic hotels, perfectly located in the heart of each city, so we were right next to all the sightseeing (very convenient). The breakfasts were amazing, and the rooms were absolutely marvelous! The naps that I had on those super soft beds after those 12-hour exploring days for me was totally worth it.&nbsp;</p>
<h3>What is one thing every future participant should know about your program before their program begins?</h3>
<p>Future participants should really pay more attention and dive into the pre-departure preparations that the travel company gladly provides for its travelers.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Understanding your destination beforehand unlocks a way richer experience, a deeper cultural immersion, and a more meaningful journey overall.</p>
<h3>Would you recommend the Cliffs to Castles program to others? Why?</h3>
<p>Absolutely, 1000%!&nbsp;</p>
<p>Going with a group is amazing. It offers so much freedom to explore and experience things together. You get the best of both worlds: sometimes adventure on your own at your own pace, but you also have shared memories with people, and that's something that really brings people together.</p>

<h3>What do you feel the biggest benefit of traveling abroad is?</h3>
<p>Becoming more open-minded. One thing is when you see something on TV, but the other is when you are literally there, breathing the air and feeling the atmosphere. I just can not comprehend how lucky I am that I have this chance in life to travel and actually see the world.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Not many people are this lucky. So, encourage: if you have a chance to travel, not just abroad, take it! Life is too short.</p>
<h3>Now that you're home, how has your time abroad impacted your life?</h3>
<p>So, back home now, and honestly, my time abroad, especially that whole American experience, has really been a game-changer for me. It was not just a trip; it was a big, amazing test that proved to me that I am brave enough to walk into the unknown. And the best part is that I can actually have a lot of fun doing it!&nbsp;</p>
<p>Now this "unknown" feels like an invitation, a challenge that is actually exciting. It has opened up a whole new way of looking at things, and I feel way more ready to just jump into whatever comes next.</p>
<h3>What does meaningful travel mean to you?</h3>
<p>Meaningful travel means coming back home with a little sadness that it has actually ended, but overwhelmingly happy that I had the chance to experience it all.&nbsp;</p>
<p>It is that lasting feeling of having experienced something special, and I would say looking forward to the next trip and the next destinations where you will make tons of new memories.</p>

<h3>What inspired you to go abroad?</h3>
<p>I love traveling abroad to discover new countries, new people, and cultures. I have already traveled abroad in the past, but not for an extensive period of 7 weeks as I did now.&nbsp;</p>
<p>I was curious to explore a new way of traveling by staying at a local host family, which allows full immersion in the community and culture.</p>
<h3>Why did you choose <a href=https://www.goabroad.com/providers/beyond-travels rel="" target="_self" class="link">Beyond Travels</a>?</h3>
<p>The <a href=https://www.goabroad.com/providers/beyond-travels/programs/traditional-plant-medicine-herbalism-ethnobotany-168135 rel="" target="_self" class="link">Indigenous Plant Medicine &amp; Ethnobotany internship</a> of Beyond Travels aligned perfectly with my interests. I followed basic herbalism courses in my home country, and I wanted to explore medicinal plant usage in other countries.&nbsp;</p>
<p>This, together with my desire to travel to South America and love for discovering new cultures and people, led me to choose this specific program.</p>

<h3>What was your favorite part about Ecuador?</h3>
<p>The internship took place in San Louis, a small village near Archidona in Ecuador. I loved the rural area where our host family's house was located, far away from busy places. I enjoyed the surrounding sounds of nature, birds, and animals.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Also, it was nice that the house was located next to a bus stop. So I had the opportunity to visit nearby villages to explore them.&nbsp;</p>
<h3>What made your experience abroad extraordinary?</h3>
<p>It is extraordinary how the organization was able to shape the project to fit it even more with some of my personal interests and goals. They provided local contacts and arranged meetings with people working in my fields of interest.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Besides, their weekly organized excursions to local organizations or families were super interesting and educational.&nbsp;</p>
<h3>How did local staff support you throughout your program?</h3>
<p>We had an amazing project manager who was available 24/7 for any questions or concerns. She herself lives in Tena and assisted us once per week during a planned excursion to help translate Spanish information and connect well with the volunteers.&nbsp;</p>
<p>In addition to this excursion, we had a weekly personal meeting with her to discuss any concerns or personal goals related to the project. It is truly amazing how the local staff supported us. This ensured that I felt very safe during my whole stay.&nbsp;</p>
<h3>What's one thing you wish you would have done differently during your time abroad?</h3>
<p>I would not have done anything differently. I'm very happy with the choices I have made, and the people I have met. I'm grateful for all the opportunities I got and grabbed them with both hands.</p>
<p>This led to the truly amazing experience I had abroad. I did not have any bad experiences that I wished to change.</p>
<h3>Describe what a typical day in your life abroad looked like.</h3>
<p>A "typical day" did not really exist. I had the feeling that every day was a small adventure.&nbsp;</p>
<p>My internship covered many different activities, from helping the host family to harvest food and discovering medicinal plants in their 'chakra' forest system, to helping with preparing natural cosmetic products and going on excursions.&nbsp;</p>
<p>The only certainty every day was that I woke up quite early (around 7h, or earlier if we were going to the chakra).</p>

<h3>What did you enjoy doing during your free time abroad?</h3>
<p>During my free time abroad, I enjoyed the moments with the host family. I loved playing with the children or helping with cooking. Further, it was nice to hang around in the surrounding villages once in a while.&nbsp;</p>
<p>I made an artisanal 'chikra' bag that locals use to collect food from the chakra or just as a handbag.</p>
<h3>What type of accommodation did you have? What did you like best about it?</h3>
<p>I stayed in a basic yet beautiful hut in the host family's garden. The hut was made of wood and bamboo. My room contained a small desk and a few wooden cabinets for storing clothes and other items.&nbsp;</p>
<p>There was a small sanitary building (including a toilet and shower) near our rooms. The family provided toilet paper or anything we asked for.&nbsp;</p>
<h3>What is one thing every future participant should know about your program before their program begins?</h3>
<p>This program offers a full immersion in the local community and culture. You need to be ready to open your mind and heart to their way of life and thinking, and be flexible.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Days are not structured (as in most European countries), and plans can change drastically. Furthermore, depending on the host family where you stay, there might be power outages and problems with water supply and mobile connection. Although this never resulted in drastic problems.</p>
<h3>Would you recommend Beyond Travels to others? Why?</h3>
<p>Yes, 100%. I had a truly amazing time abroad thanks to the organization that puts a lot of effort into shaping the program to personal interests. They went far above my expectations by offering incredible service, assistance, and guidance to make the most out of your experience. They are genuinely committed to every volunteer.&nbsp;</p>
<h3>What do you feel the biggest benefit of traveling abroad is?</h3>
<p>In my opinion, traveling abroad offers many benefits. It allows you to discover new places, people, and cultures and to broaden your horizon and mindset.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Furthermore, it strengthens your personal development and independence, helps you to discover what is truly meaningful in life, and to put trivialities into perspective.&nbsp;</p>

<h3>Now that you're home, how has your time abroad impacted your life?</h3>
<p>I will not go home immediately after my internship. I will travel around Ecuador for an additional 5 weeks before going home. My stay abroad with the host family provided me with valuable personal insights and reminded me of the important things in life.&nbsp;</p>
<p>My stay abroad might also impact future decisions related to my personal career.</p>
<h3>What does meaningful travel mean to you?</h3>
<p>To me, meaningful travel means traveling to fulfill a certain goal. This can be a personal goal to strengthen self-development or personal skills, or a more 'shared goal' that benefits multiple people (e.g. volunteering work).&nbsp;</p>
<p>I think it is super important that you keep your eyes and heart open for local experiences, people, and activities and that you try to support them.&nbsp;</p>
