Program Overview
Law is rarely most powerful in a courtroom. Sometimes, it begins in a community office, a women’s group, a family dispute or a conversation with someone who has never been told what their rights are.
Based in Arusha, Tanzania, this placement offers law students, graduates and legal professionals an immersive introduction to legal advocacy, human rights and community-based justice. Participants work alongside Tanzanian organisations and communities affected by issues including gender-based violence, family conflict, inheritance disputes, child protection, early marriage and unequal access to legal support.
This is not an invitation to arrive with imported answers. It is an opportunity to examine how law operates beyond familiar institutions, and to rethink whose systems, language and expertise are treated as authoritative.
Come expecting to learn about Tanzanian law. Leave questioning how justice is defined, who can access it and what meaningful advocacy really demands.

Do I need to be a qualified lawyer to join?
No. The placement is suitable for law students, recent graduates, legal professionals and participants studying related fields such as human rights, international development or social policy. Your responsibilities will reflect your education, experience and the needs of the host organisation.
What kind of legal work could I support?
Depending on current cases and organisational priorities, you may assist with legal research, case summaries, client intake, documentation, community rights education, referral pathways and outreach. Work may relate to gender-based violence, child protection, family disputes, inheritance, early marriage and access to justice.
Will I attend court or meet clients directly?
Court visits and client-facing work may be possible, but they cannot be guaranteed. Access depends on active cases, confidentiality, language, professional suitability and the decisions of the local legal team. This is a real working environment, not a staged legal simulation.
How are confidentiality and sensitive cases handled?
Participants must follow strict professional boundaries. Some cases involve trauma, family conflict or vulnerable individuals, so confidentiality, consent and respectful conduct are essential. You will never be entitled to access a case simply because you are an international volunteer.
How does Medi Trip avoid turning volunteering into “saviourism"?
Local advocates define the work, the priorities and the limits of your involvement. The placement is designed around listening before intervening, recognising Tanzanian legal expertise and challenging the assumption that international participants arrive with better solutions. Meaningful contribution begins with understanding the system already in place.
