A Guide to Gap Year in Malawi
Best Cities
Malawi is little, but that doesn’t mean it’s limiting. Do you want to go urban? Rural? Resort? Take your pick!
Lilongwe. Lilongwe is the capital of Malawi, its economic and political center, and still growing with a population of over a million. Being a major city, gappers will easily find a range of activities for their Malawi gap years. However, it’s recommended to spend an extended amount of time here only if you have the ability to find charm in chaos.
Mangochi. Located at the southern tip of Lake Malawi, gappers will find refuge from bustling Lilongwe in quiet and laid back Mangochi. Though it’s much smaller than the capital up north, there is plenty to see and do for those seeking a gap year with an outdoorsy focus. You won’t quickly get tired of the swaying palms and glittering lake!
Monkey Bay. Monkey Bay is slightly north of Mangochi, and also on the shore of Lake Malawi. Even smaller than Mangochi in population, but popular with tourists, many consider Monkey Bay to be a resort town. Despite its destination status, you’ll still be able to find a taste of authentic Malawi, as well as worthwhile gap year activities.
Popular Activities
Malawi gap years encourage lessons in selflessness and altruism. The need for outside support in Malawi hasn’t slowed as the country works to solve poverty and corruption.
Volunteering. Malawi is one of the least developed countries in Africa, and continues to struggle with issues such as infant mortality and HIV/AIDS. Gappers can find many causes across the country to dedicate time to during a gap year in Malawi. Imagine the difference a year can make to communities!
Teach Abroad. Education in Malawi is improving, but there is still some way to go. Gappers who have a knack for working with children (or adults!) can spend a gap year in Malawi helping to improve literacy rates. Although English is an official language in Malawi, there are both urban and rural residents who would like to improve their skills.
Animals. Malawi is home to many exotic animals, including elephants, hippos, lions, parrots, and monkeys. Gappers who are interested in animal rights or zoology would find their time well spent during a gap year in Malawi. Just keep in mind to pursue only ethical avenues for this type of gap year. Safari anyone?
What Else You Need to Know
Costs. Considering the economic state in Malawi, it is an exceedingly affordable country by Western standards. The largest expense during Malawi gap years will be the flight and program fee (check out FundMyTravel if you need help!), so once those are paid, you won’t have to worry too much about budgeting.
Accommodations. Don’t expect the 5-star treatment during a gap year in Malawi. Homestays and dormitories are common types of accommodations, and amenities will be limited—including electricity in some areas. WiFi is limited or nonexistent in many areas, so be sure to arrange plans for how to communicate to friends and family back home.
Visas. You will need a visa in order to visit Malawi; fees vary depending on the type. Your program advisor will assist you in deciding which visa is right for you. Check out the GoAbroad embassy directory for more information.
Safety. There is no reason to feel unsafe in Malawi, but be sure to use common sense when it comes to traveling alone, and remain respectful of the culture and people always. It is worth noting that homosexuality is currently illegal in Malawi; for safety, LGBTQI gappers should exercise discretion.
GoAbroad’s Inside Scoop
Gap year programs in Malawi continue to evade the radar of travelers. Those who choose Malawi as their destination truly will find the path less traveled, and a heckuva lot of potential for personal growth. Going days without electricity? Weeks without WiFi? Spending a gap year in Malawi means coming out the other side a much more humble person. Reflection and mindfulness will be important activities to partake in both during and after an extended amount of time spent here, so make sure to pack a journal or two.
Much of the population in Malawi still lacks access to clean drinking water, and those taking a gap year here will be no exception. Be sure to consult your program advisor on how to refrain from wasting water and safely stay hydrated. In other logistical news, ATMs will be difficult to come by in many towns and rural areas, so exchange money prior to arrival if possible. It might be a good idea to practice living without Western amenities before you depart for Malawi by trying to go without conveniences at home for a week or more.
Malawi gap years are not for the faint of heart. Spending a year here will be challenging, but oh so rewarding—in more ways than one!
