A Guide to Adventure Travel in Greece
Locations
Greece is a lovely blend of coastal beaches, inland wonders, and mountainous activities jam packed into one country. Whether you decide to adventure in Greece within the highly touristy city of Athens or take a break from the city lights and traffic by island hopping, you’ll have the chance to unleash your adventurous side through all kinds of activities in Greece.
Naturally, if the city of Athens was named after a Greek god, it has to be pretty cool, and “cool” is just an understatement. The origins of Athens date back to 3,000 B.C., making it one of the oldest cities in the world. Yet, some of the oldest ruins are still standing and open to the public. For those who want to flash thousands of years back in time, checking out the Acropolis of Athens or the Parthenon is the way to go, by helicopter of course! Get the thrill of being over a thousand feet up into the air, while getting a 360 degree panoramic view of this ancient city.
For those who aren’t as interested in ancient times and would rather take the more adventurous road, you can spend the day exploring, snorkeling, or boating in Rhode, Greece. Get lost in a sea of flying colors in the Valley of Butterflies, then show off your bravery and fence with the knights within the Medieval City. With all of its medieval history and castle-like architecture, Rhodes is an island straight out of a storybook; you don’t even have to watch a Disney movie to experience this fairytale magic!
Santorini is known as one of the best destinations for island hopping, sailing, and nom’ing on taramasalata while enjoying the vibrant sunset. Amoudi Bay is one of Santorini’s not so hidden treasures, and is perfect for those who want to enjoy a day of sailing and sunset cruising. You could also embark on an adventurous trek from Fira to Oia for the best views of the sun rising or setting. Home to many cliffs (to cliff-jump off of, of course!), black sand beaches, windmills, and blue domes, it is no wonder that many describe the island as Greece’s “postcard island.”
Adventure Travel in Greece
Since Greece is most famous for its many islands, the most popular adventure activities in Greece are water-based, such as canoeing, deep sea fishing, and kayaking. But, for those who prefer to keep their toes dry, there are also mountain and inland activities, like hiking, cooking, and horseback riding.
It does seem a little fishy to go sailing near the islands without coming home with the catch of the day. Deep-sea fishing while sailing around the Greek Isles and the red beaches of Santorini is both relaxing and exciting. There’s such an adrenaline rush to casting the fishing line and building up to the suspenseful moment of hooking a big ol’ fish! Deep-sea fishing is a way to explore the Greek islands by boat and get a glimpse of what lurks underneath.
After hooking the biggest tuna you’ve ever seen, why not bring it over to your cooking class? Taking a cooking class in Greece will not only give you experience of the making of traditional Greek dishes, but you’ll also leave with a food coma and a belly full of delicious food. A lot of Greek food involves spit-roasted and charcoal-grilled meats topped with tzatziki sauce. You’ll have the chance to experiment and smell a rainbow of spices, herbs, and flavors you may have never even knew existed.
It’s no wonder the birthplace of the Olympics was in Greece; extreme sports is a popular way for both locals and tourists to get a daily dose of thrill. And what better way to get the ultimate adrenaline rush and get the best bird’s eye view of all of Greece than to skydive? Even though this extreme sport is one of the priciest, it will deliver the experience and views of a lifetime, and you can’t put a price-tag to that! Skydiving is also a great way to conquer your fears and take a giant leap during your adventures in Greece.
Costs & Affordability
The cost of living in Greece is likely lower than where you came from, especially when you consider the current economic situation. The average meal at an inexpensive restaurant is about 10 euro and it costs about 1 to 2 Euro for a Coke or soda. Essentially, the more touristy places and islands, such as Santorini, will be overpriced, but that’s just the price you pay for the gorgeous island life.
Adventures in Greece typically last from two to eight weeks and include housing, daily meals, medical insurance, orientation, trainings, and excursions. Even though many basic necessities are included in program costs, it’s always a good idea to save extra money months before you embark on your adventure in Greece, in case you want to take an extra skydiving trip!
Accommodation & Visas
Try your hand at glamping with tents and cots on the islands, bemuse the goddess Asteria as you sleep under the thousands of glimmering bright stars, or even try slumming it in a classic hostel and meet other individuals who carry the same passion for adventure. If you’d like to save the adventure for things outside of your living arrangements so you can live more comfortably, you can look for adventures in Greece that provide other housing options, such as homestays or apartments.
A passport will be needed in order to travel to Greece, but a visa is not required if you stay in the country for less than 90 days. If you do plan on staying in Greece for longer than 90 days, refer to GoAbroad’s Embassy Directory for more information on how to receive a proper visa.
Benefits & Challenges
Even though there are many benefits of adventure travel in Greece, sometimes there may be trouble in paradise. As you may know, the economic crisis in Greece has taken a huge negative toll on its economy. Due to the economic downturn, many locals are finding it extremely hard to find a job. Additionally, many locals are getting laid-off, which has led to a larger homeless population and crime rate; desperate times call for desperate measures. Remember to always be alert and cautious while exploring the nooks and crannies of Greece.
However, despite the economic downturn, unless you are planning on living in Greece for a long time, the country is exceptional in providing the activities and adventure any traveler will be looking for. There is a strong tourism focus in the more popular areas of Greece, but there’s so much more to see! Carve your own paths by looking for more far-flung adventures in Greece’s severely under-appreciated inland.
Between trekking the Caldera Trail and rafting in Lousios River, be sure to stuff your face with gyro after gyro (but don’t forget to save room for baklava!). As one of the most influential cuisines in the world, do yourself a favor and ruin all future Greek salads by engorging on the real deal while you’re in Greece.
It is important to take advantage of your short period of time in Greece, and not focus too intently on its economy. Instead, truly embrace Greece for its mythological past and exquisite cuisines, aspects that are both unique to the Greek culture.
Hopefully it’s not going to take a Pegasus to swoop you up in the air and deliver you to Greece in order to convince you to travel to this beautiful country. Adventure travel in Greece will deliver more than just colorful pictures for your Snapchat story. In fact, the modern thrill-seeker’s effort will have a Herculean payoff in the Hellenic Republic.

I had so much fun at Putney on my Greece and Italy trip. My leaders were well-educated and made the experience so much fun. Greece Adventure
November 27, 2025by: Bella Engilman - United StatesI had an amazing time on my trip to Greece! I had the opportunity to explore several cities in Greece, including Paros, Athens, Santorini, and more. Everything went smoothly, and I got to see lots of new places with new people. At first, I was so nervous to go out of the country with no adult, just my twin sister and me, but it was the best experience of my life. The people I got to meet were amazing, and the boat day specifically was one of my favorite memories since I got to explore so many different islands and snorkel. I learned a lot, tried new things, and made experiences I’ll never forget. I would definitely recommend this trip to anyone looking for adventure and good people!
Greece and Italy Adventure
November 20, 2025by: Dylan Plant - United StatesGoing on Travel for Teens' Greece and Italy adventure was one of the most rewarding experiences I've ever had. I got to travel to incredible places like Capri, Amalfi Coast, Rome, Athens, and Lefkada. As someone who hadn't ever been out of the country by myself, Travel for Teens allowed me to feel safe and confident about being in a country with people I had never met before. It was super easy to make friends, to feel safe with my councillors, and to have fun. I always look back on that trip as transformative (for myself), and the highlight of my summer. I think travel for teens did a great job with the itinerary, and also picking councillors that were very good connecting with the students. Overall, I had a great time being apart of Travel for Teens' program.
The experience of a lifetime
November 18, 2025by: Asher Lockner - United StatesMy Greece island-hopping trip with TFT was honestly one of the best things I’ve done. I knew the views were gonna be nice, but seeing everything in person was crazy. Every island had its own vibe, so the trip never felt repetitive. One day we’d be exploring little streets and shops, and the next we’d be chilling on a beach with water so clear it didn’t even look real. Everything ran smoother than I expected too. We were moving around a lot, but TFT kept it organized without making it feel strict. The leaders were helpful and chill, and they let us actually enjoy the places we were in instead of rushing us everywhere. Even the ferry rides were fun because the scenery was wild. The food was another highlight. I tried way more Greek food than I thought I would — gyros, seafood, pastries — and pretty much everything hit. Just sitting outside eating with that view made it better. But honestly, the group made the trip what it was. Traveling with people your age who are also excited to explore makes the whole experience way more fun. It felt like a good mix of adventure and just hanging out. If you’re thinking about going, definitely go. It’s worth it.
I had so much Fun!!
November 17, 2025by: Allie Dey - United StatesHonestly, it was SO much fun. We did so many cool things, saw incredible places, and I made some of my best friends on this trip. It was definitely expensive, but 100% worth it for everything we got to do and the memories we made. Seriously, if you get the chance, go for it!

Amazing trip with amazing people ❤️
November 15, 2025by: Ananya Saraf - United StatesTraveling to Greece and Italy was seriously one of the best experiences of my life. This was my first time traveling internationally, and I was originally nervous. This trip forced me out of my comfort zone, but in the best way possible. The counselors made sure to listen and adapt with the students, and every day felt like a blessing. You will get to do things you’ve never thought was possible in your lifetime. We went to the best stores, ate the best food (seriously still thinking about that pizza 😋) and had the best time. If you are worried about making friends-have no fear. I was also one of those students, but the friendly environment dissipated my fears. Have the best time on your trip- I know you will 😘

My Epic Summer With TFT
November 29, 2024by: Noah Livstone - United StatesThis summer, I went Greece with Travel for Teens! The whole experience was top tier, from the cultural immersion, to the adventure, to the insane views. Visiting the Acropolis was unreal; standing with so much history is something I’ll never forget. We explored the Temple of Poseidon, which really made my head spin--there were ancient Greeks praying right where I was standing! The Ottoman fortress we explored was also insane, there was a battle there! We also took a boat tour around Paros, which was amazing, jumping off, swimming to isolated beaches and exploring random islands with your buddies. And of course, Santorini lived up to the hype. Scuba diving there was a highlight--my first time, and I was hooked. After a long school year, the mix of adventure and downtime was perfect. The beaches were beautiful and the perfect spot to just relax. The group was great, everyone was chill and wanted to have a great time. We all ended up laughing over the gelato runs every night. Overall, it was the perfect balance of learning, exploring, and taking in out of this world views. If you’re looking for an experience to MAKE your summer, this is the one for you

Best 2 weeks of my life!
November 22, 2024by: Salem Frost - United StatesObviously as a teen, it can be stressful traveling across the world alone. Travel For Teens does a phenomenal job of easing stress and making your experience as smooth as possible! The night before my trip my flights to Greece got canceled. My trip coordinator already had me on new flights before I even knew my flight was canceled! The staff go above and beyond to make the trip fun for everyone on the trip. There is an itinerary but it is not set in stone and the counselors are super flexible with incorporating everyone’s wishes into the schedule! There is not a company I would trust more with traveling abroad. My specific group traveled to Athens, Delphi, Lefkada, Naples, Sorrento, Positano, Capri, and Rome. I would not trade the experience for the world and I have new friendships that will last a life time.

Best trip
November 01, 2024by: Lauren Walker - United StatesProgram: Greece: Island Turtle Conservation with Rustic Pathways
I had an unforgettable time with sea turtles! Met the best people and the staff was great. It was so hands-on and so rewarding. Met my new friend Katie which was great. My only knock was that sometimes it could feel a little clicky between different groups.
Hey Lauren! Thanks so much for traveling with us. We're so happy that you made a lifelong friend! And thanks for the feedback. We'll report it back to our team to see how we can improve on our group dynamics. And we hope you travel with us again soon!

This is a good program for nature lovers and animal lovers. I got to spend time on the sandy beaches, and work with endangered Sea Turtles. The PLs were super nice, and interacting with other kids was cool as well

The Highlight of My Year!
January 02, 2024by: Ashley Cruz - United StatesProgram: Exploring Italy & Greece: Ruins, Culture & Coastlines
My experience on my trip to Italy and Greece with Putney Student Travel was the highlight of my year! I made many new friends along the way all from different places that made the trip even more enjoyable. I discovered many new foods, places, and cultures. I found a new person within myself that made me into a very out going and living to my fullest person. Having had the opportunity to be apart of the Italy and Greece trip was the best trip to occur during my summer and has filled me with endless beautiful memories that will last a lifetime!
The trip of a lifetime
November 25, 2023by: Mackenzie Foreman - United StatesGoing to Greece has always been a dream of mine for as long as I can remember. This trip is filled with rich history and culture, amazing food and hotels. While on this trip I got to experience an authentic greek cooking class, scuba diving in Santorini and many other wonderful experiences while making lifelong memories and friendships. Going with travel for teens I got to experience things i never would've know about if I was to go on my own. I would recommend this trip to anyone wanting to learn about the history of Greece or living out their Mamma Mia dreams.
Greece and Italy !!
November 01, 2023by: Lauren Sowers - United StatesSummer of 2022, I had the pleasure of joining Travel for Teens on their Older Teens Greece and Italy trip and I have to say, it was easily the best decision I've made in a long time! From start to finish, everything was spectacularly well-organized, and the itinerary left plenty of room for spontaneity and exploration. Our counselors were knowledgeable, friendly, and approachable, making us feel right at home in unfamiliar surroundings. They took care of everything from navigating public transportation to arranging for meals and accommodations. We were able to focus completely on experiencing the wonders of these ancient lands without any of the logistics or scheduling worries. Every day was filled with adventure and discovery, and I left both countries feeling profoundly affected by the experience. One of the highlights of the trip was the chance to get on the water in both Greece and Italy. These beach days where we were island hopping was most definitely one of the best experiences I have ever had. Whether it was chatting with street artists in Rome or learning about and eating traditional dishes on the island of Lefkada, we were able to connect with people on a genuine, human level. It made the trip feel so much more authentic and unforgettable. I also appreciated how Travel for Teens encouraged us to step outside of our comfort zones. Whether it was trying new foods, speaking in foreign languages, or tackling physical challenges like scuba driving in Greece, they gave us opportunities to grow and learn from our experiences. I feel like I came away from the trip with a broader perspective on life, and a greater appreciation for the diversity of the world. Not only that, but I have made lifelong connections through this program and continue to contact the friends I have made on this trip years later! Overall, I cannot recommend Travel for Teens highly enough. Their older teens Greece and Italy trip was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. If you're looking for a fun, educational, and life-changing adventure, look no further than Travel for Teens.

Awesome volunteer program in Victoria Falls
June 30, 2022by: Cecilia Hugo - United StatesProgram: Worlds #1 Volunteer Programs. 40+ Countries from $20/day!
I volunteered at Nakavango in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, as part of the IVHQ Wildlife Conservation Project. It truly was one of the highlights of my life. And I’ve had some pretty remarkable experiences so that says a lot. The staff a Nakavango was incredible and extremely knowledgeable. They create the perfect balance of hard work and joyous moments playing with the children at Masuwe School, observing wildlife in the bush, and taking in the sights of one of the seven wonders of the world. We each had our own room, were provided three yummy meals a day with great care to accommodate those who have special diets. Highlights of my stay included morning and evening game drives, sitting around the fire pit under the stars, camping out in the bush, and completing a work task feeling that we had made progress on a project. Yet, the most outstanding aspect of this experience for me, was bonding with my fellow volunteers. Prior to arriving at Nakavango, I thought I’d be the senior member of the crew so I was a bit apprehensive even though I had worked for weeks to get in shape physically so I could contribute equally. Well, I wasn’t the most senior. In fact, we had a wonderful range of ages, nationalities, and personalities. We became a family, caring for and respectful of all. That truly blew me away. And now, we continue to stay in touch. I am so grateful for the IVHQ program at Nakavango. It changed my life!

The best trip EVER!
November 11, 2021by: Emma Jackson - United StatesThis was the best trip I have ever taken and I am so grateful I had the opportunity to take it. I will definitely be taking another trip or becoming apart of TFT in some sort of significant way. The people I met on the trip were even better than I had expected. Not only that, but the people who led my trip were BEYOND excellent. They knew exactly how to make the trip amazing in every way.

Truly, the best time of my life
November 09, 2021by: Grayden Mitchell - United StatesDuring these two weeks, the people I met with changed my life forever is such a positive way. I had so much fun with them, even more fun than with my friends at home! The food was better than I could have ever imagined, the scenery was breathtaking (and, frankly, there are no words for the Amalfi Coast or the mountains of Delphi), and the cities were so full of life, as were the locals. The archeological sites (such as Pompeii, the Oracle at Delphi, the Colosseum, the Forum, etc.) were so cool to look at! Swimming and SCUBA diving in the Mediterranean Sea was one of the highlights of the trip! This trip will leave me smiling at the memories for the rest of my life. Thank you, TFT, for making this possible. If you want to meet lifelong friends, see astounding sites, eat the best food you've ever tasted, or see the places where the foundations for our society were laid, then this trip is for you! I cannot praise this trip enough!
Best trip ever!!!!
November 24, 2018by: Lindsay P - United StatesAs I entered my summer after graduating high school and before starting college, I wanted to do something that created lifelong memories and allowed me to explore a new part of the world I’d never been to; TFT’s Greece Island Hopping for Older Teens did just that. I was thankful that TFT offered a program specifically for kids finishing 11th and 12th grade, because I wanted to be surrounded by other people my age, with similar experiences and interests as me. This program was the perfect way for me to explore the gorgeous beaches of Paros and Naxos, and also immerse myself in the greek culture through sampling different foods, and speaking with locals. Greece has so many unique and historical sights to offer, and this trip gave me the chance to see it all; the famous Acropolis in Athens, the postcard-like blue domed buildings of Santorini, the ancient grecian island Delos, and more. I could not have asked for a better trip to send me off into the new chapter of my life!
