Join us in our medical internship at a district hospital in Chiang Mai, Thailand. You will work in district hospitals that are severely under-resourced. District hospitals in the area serve a population between 60,000 and 80,000 in size and are only staffed by approximately 3-5 doctors and 30-40 nurses. Despite the challenges, the Thai public healthcare system is often viewed as one of the best in the region. Some of the prevalent problems the local health care system is facing are teenage pregnancy, increasing levels of non-communicable diseases, and contagious diseases. Hospitals, however, do provide a range of services including emergency care, x-ray, laboratory, in-patient wards, OBGYN, pharmacy, ECG, dental, eye-care, and pre and post-op care. Thailand is an excellent place to undertake a medical internship, as you will observe how healthcare systems in developing countries can overcome many obstacles. The medical internship in Chiang Mai primarily involves shadowing and is, therefore, suitable for students of medicine, nursing, or healthcare. Cultural sensitivity and good team working skills are also essential since you will be working with a local team.

Work as a Teacher’s Assistant at the International University for Monks. The monks study Buddhism and meditation in the morning, and take classes at the university in the afternoon. Most classes use English as the language of instruction. There are about 250 students at the university. About half of the students are Thai and the other half are of other Asian nationalities, including Laotian, Cambodian, and Bangladeshi. This diversity makes an international learning environment at an institution focused on the higher education for Buddhist monks. For these reasons, it is a very unique school. The university is located in one of Chiang Mai's largest and most historic temples and is in the vicinity of Chiang Mai University and other small colleges, which gives the area quite an academic atmosphere. Volunteers serve under the direction of the English department, which is staffed by a highly qualified and educated, bilingual, Thai faculty. Although most of the professors are regular Thais, a few members of the faculty are Buddhist monks.
