A region accentuated by the colorful robes of Buddhist monks, the vivid greens of rice fields and jungle forests, and the cultural diversity of hill tribe communities—this is the ultimate Southeast Asia semester. Each country offers a unique cultural experience unto itself, and each faces the challenge of reconciling urban expansion and industrialization with indigenous land rights, free movement of nomadic peoples, and equal access to resources. This semester, walk among ancient temples, traverse mountainous jungles, and explore the clear blue water of Thailand’s beaches. You’ll explore tradition, globalization, and human rights against the backdrop of two of Asia’s most complex nations. Immerse yourself in community life through homestays and visits to remote villages. Emerge with your self-awareness and perspective forever altered. 2025: CLOSED Spring 2026: February 25 - May 6 Fall 2026: September 24 - December 4

The Cambodia Clean Water Project saves lives and helps protect livelihoods by giving rural communities access to clean drinking water. In Cambodia, 1 in 7 children dies before the age of five from preventable diseases such as typhoid, malnutrition, malaria, dengue fever, and diarrhea. Dirty water is the common denominator for all of these conditions and the direct cause of many. Moreover, when adults fall victim to such illnesses and are unable to work, it is not long before entire families go without food, and the cost of medicines and treatment can leave a family struggling with debt for years. Volunteers spend days building and installing bio-sand water filters at the project, which are a low-cost way to provide potable water to impoverished areas from any source (i.e. pump wells, pit wells, rivers, ponds). Sand filters are a relatively new technology in Cambodia and are highly effective as they are easy to construct with locally available materials as well as simple to install and maintain.

Join us for the adventure of a lifetime! Volunteers For Peace (a Vermont-based nonprofit) can place you on a team of international volunteers who contribute to a meaningful community service project designed, planned, and hosted by local partners. We offer the most affordable projects and the best way to meet people from all over the world. Work project types vary by country but may include environmental and wildlife conservation, historic preservation, educational and language learning, archaeology, organic farming, and arts and festivals. We also have social services projects, which could involve working with children, the elderly, or refugees. Projects are designed to combine service with recreational activities and cultural exchange – whether by visiting local beaches, learning local dances, meeting local officials, or volunteering with residents at the place you’re visiting. Each project is unique, but all bring people together for the most meaningful travel experience imaginable. Please note that VFP can only place US Citizens. This is due to our agreements with our international partners.
