Sadly, the Banteay Chhmar complex was severely looted throughout the 1990s because of its remote location and proximity to the Thai border. The Cambodia Food & Farming Project with Globalteer works with communities around Siem Reap to help them move away from the hand-to-mouth existence of subsistence farming and fishing. Day-to-day subsistence leaves people particularly susceptible to food shortages caused by extreme weather, sickness, and even market conditions that push prices up beyond many people’s reach. Having a reliable food source not only ensures that families do not go hungry, but also means that children can keep up regular school attendance rather than be forced to work, or worse still take to the streets to beg in order to feed their families. In addition to providing food for impoverished families, these exciting projects also teach villagers valuable and practical new skills as well as provide a means of generating income for the projects’ other programs. Volunteers working on these sustainable food programs will be primarily assisting local and project staff in the maintenance and upkeep of the market gardens, farms, and fish farms. You could find yourself digging the ground in preparation for planting, planting seeds, transplanting seedlings, or harvesting crops.

Once known as the Khmer Empire, Cambodia is perhaps best known for its monumental temples, especially Angkor Wat. It is a country of incredible beauty, scattered with these temples, fertile rice fields, and a rich and interesting history. Following its independence from France, Cambodia experienced years of civil war, turmoil, and political corruption, as well as suffering from its involvement in the Vietnam War. Despite this dark history, Cambodia is an extraordinary country and has prevailed due to what has been described as the unbreakable spirit of the Cambodian people.

Volunteers For Peace (a Vermont-based nonprofit) can place you on a team of international volunteers who contribute to a meaningful community service project designed, planned, and hosted by local partners. Work project types vary by country but may include environmental and wildlife conservation, historic preservation, educational and language learning, archaeology, organic farming, and arts and festivals.
