USAC Sweden: Vaxjo/Kalmar - Undergraduate & Graduate Courses

If you’re looking for a unique study abroad experience, USAC offers a program that will take you to Växjö – a town that boasts beautiful glassworks and a high-tech furniture and paper manufacturing industry amidst picturesque natural surroundings. The Växjö (pronounced Vĕck-qŭh) /Kalmar program involves enrollment in a broad range of English-taught courses at Linnaeus University’s Växjö or Kalmar campus. Both cities offer easy access to southeast Sweden’s natural environment of countryside, trails, lakes, and forests. Choose to stay for a semester or full year, taking courses in Humanities, Social Work, Computer Science, Engineering, Design, and several other disciplines. You can also take Introductory, Beginner, Intermediate, or Advanced Swedish in addition to the regular study program (included in program fees) – an ideal option for exchange students. The Introductory course is non-credited, while the other courses (Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced) award credits. Most people in Sweden speak some English, but we strongly recommend you enroll in one of these optional courses to assimilate better into Swedish culture and way of life.

DIS Stockholm – Terrorism & Security

How are security threats defined and responded to in a changing Europe? Explore the complexity of European security and intelligence dilemmas in light of the movement of people and increased tensions among nations in this three-credit, fall or spring study abroad program on European Security Dilemmas and Intelligence from DIS. Europe is under pressure and what constitutes a security threat is also changing: a larger Russian presence in the region and increased risk of terrorism, but also fundamentalist and right-wing tendencies, the risk of pandemics, cyber terrorism, and European governments struggling to respond in unison to increasing numbers of refugees. Drawing on European schools of thought within international security studies, this course explores current intelligence and security dilemmas in the region.

Lifelong Friends and Memories

I would like to start with USAC was amazing in supporting me to get to Kalmar as I was the first person in my university to do it, and this caused some hiccups. Kalmar is a beautifully quiet city, with many college-age people. Walking is easy, and apartments are bafflingly cheap. The school is wonderful and right on the water, and it even has a view of a nearby castle! They have an excellent program for exchange students, and this is how I met so many friends from all over the world; not many Americans do this program and I enjoyed that. With the friends I made, we traveled Europe on a budget quite easily. I also enjoyed a solo trip to Longyearbyen, Svalbard, to see the aurora and experience polar night. I still talk to those friends I met and traveled with all these years later (I went in 2023). This was the most amazing experience of my life that I cannot fit into a comment well, but I hope this can at least help convince you to take the step.
