Study Abroad Programs in Belfast, Northern Ireland

My time in Northern Ireland was an absolutely life changing experience. It is not your typical study abroad experience, it is pretty structured but it's that way for a reason. I got to speak to people on both sides of the conflict in Northern Ireland as well as learn in depth about what peace building really looks like in a modern society. I also got opportunity to intern at a community development organization where I met so many incredible people with amazing stories. Northern Ireland is also an extremely beautiful place that I got to explore a lot of. The north coast is one of the most breath taking places I've ever been to. Northern Ireland is a unique place that changed my life and this program is a huge part of that. I would do my study abroad 100 times over if I could.

My four months based in Derry/Londonderry were spent attending long but fascinating lectures about Northern Irish history and The Troubles, an internship at the Bloody Sunday Trust (the organization that runs the Museum of Free Derry), visiting towns and organizations historically significant to the conflict, and listening to stories shared very willingly by survivors of the violence that gripped the region not too long ago. This program provided an immersion within conflict studies that profoundly changed my view of the world, altered the focus of my studies and my post-college trajectory. I was one of six midwestern liberal arts students in the cohort, and we lived together in a Bogside flat. The combination of a focused and relatively rigorous classroom experience with day-to-day encounters of a "post-conflict" society provided the exact level of engagement and experiential understanding I was looking for. After the program ended, I went back to school to continue my Political Science degree, and then returned to Northern Ireland for a year as a volunteer at Corrymeela, a peace and reconciliation center for the region. My time with the CGEE program in Derry ultimately realized three outcomes: a fascinating and immersive academic experience, a want for much, much more, and the connections and context to make 'much more' happen. I would highly recommend this program for those who want to seriously engage with significant topics in the realms of history and political science.

I had a lovely time here, although it was not without flaws. The amenities were not great especially considering how much we paid to be here. The company guilt tripped and body shamed us. But I made innumerable new friends and had experiences that I will cherish forever.

Very nice experience, learned a lot. People I’ve met here are now friends I will still be in contact with. The internship was where I learned new skills and networked with people within the fashion industry and got inspired by being here abroad

A great learning experience with great cultural immersion. I had so much fun and met a bunch of new people and made plenty of new friends, there was plenty of free time to travel around Europe as well which made the experience even better! Overall i would highly recommend this program to anyone engineering students looking for a study abroad program.

I had such a great time in Northern Ireland at Ulster University. The courses were so much fun and I got to do a lot of hands-on work which was great! The planned excursions were also a lot of fun and really well planned out for all the students in the program. There was also plenty of free time to travel around Europe and explore the city of Derry! I would highly recommend this experience to anyone looking to study abroad.

Everyone needs to go abroad. It is awesome experiencing so many cultures. Professors while abroad are very helpful and care about their students. I really enjoyed getting to know my professors and learning not only class content but also from their real life experiences. Traveling on the weekends was obviously my favorite part of this experience. I was able to visit a bunch of different countries. Wish I could stay longer.

By getting outside of my comfort zone as much as possible, I was able to experience parts of the world while figuring out new things about myself! Staying in a home stay is completely worth it because you get to practice your Spanish and meet incredibly interesting locals!

Living in Spain was such a great experience! From the food to culture and things to do, Spain has it all. I´m definitely going to miss my time here and all the great people I met. Studying abroad helped me grow so much as a person, and I won´t ever forget this experience.

This experience allowed me to reflect on the type of person I am, what I like and what I do not like, and really step out of my comfort zone. Studying abroad has allowed me to develop critical values that are important for everyday life. I have always believed that one of the best ways to erase ignorance is by traveling and my experience here has proved that.

I had a great time with AIFS. I was able to travel all over Europe and meet many new friends. I would not really change anything other than I wish it could be longer. I liked how easy it was to get in contact with the AIFS office to solve any problems I might have had. Classes here were not as hard as back home but I found myself learning more and enjoying the work I was doing.

This semester truly changed my life in a positive way. It changed the way I look at the world, other people and cultures, daily life, and even myself. I would highly recommend to everyone thinking about it!

Going to college, I absolutely knew I wanted to study abroad; specifically, I wanted to study abroad in the United Kingdom or Ireland. After searching a plethora of study abroad programs, one, in particular, stood out to me and that was the IFSA-Butler program at Queen's University Belfast in Northern Ireland. I can easily say that I am so glad I chose this program. What made this program great for me was the small yet close group of peers I had who were also a part of the study abroad program with IFSA there. The IFSA staff made us feel so welcome as soon as we landed in Northern Ireland, and having a small group allowed all of us to bond very quickly and become close friends with ease. Having this friend group before venturing into the local university life was nice since we had a means of being together during a time where we didn't really know anyone else very well. Overall, the social aspect of study abroad through IFSA was phenomenal, and I feel that this aspect is one of the most important for studying in a foreign country for a semester. Focusing on a more academic standpoint, Northern Ireland was ideal for me as they offered courses from numerous departments. I was able to take a political science class, religion class, and statistics course during my semester abroad which all counted towards Major credit and core requirement credit at my home university. The courses were interesting and very worthwhile for my degree and overall education. All of my lecturers and TAs were so helpful with informing me of the academic logistics that went along with classes, assignments in the classes, and exams. I never felt like I was ill-prepared for anything academically related. Overall, my study abroad experience was phenomenal and I highly recommend this program to anyone who may wish to study a variety of disciplines and wish to gain a unique experience with a small yet close group of peers.

I could not have been happier with my semester spent studying and student teaching in Belfast, Northern Ireland through IFSA-Butler. The supportive program advisers, thriving cultural scene, and full immersion through community engagement gave me memories to last a life-time!

Had a wonderful time! Staff went above and beyond to be sure each student had a safe and comfortable experience, and provided many cultural activities without making students feel like they had to participate. Housing situation was great- my apartment, as well as those of all the other students that I saw, was spacious, clean, modern and well decorated. Roommate situation was also great! Overall really great time and good balance of school work and fun.

This semester was such a valuable life lesson for me about the true value of building friendships, adjusting and being willing to adapt to changing and foreign circumstances as well as how capable I am to grow and learn everyday. I loved my program with my classes, my professors and my fellow peers. I met so many wonderful people and am really going to miss seeing everybody each day

I traveled a lot in Europe and had a great time. Met many amazing people and experienced a whole new culture. I learned to appreciate America more, because the lifestyle here is very different. I did enjoy Spain a lot. When I traveled to other countries in Europe, it made me love Barcelona even more and grateful that I studied here. Unfortunately, I do not think the academics were the best. Some of the teachers were not very nice and expect you to know the spanish language perfectly. The program leaders were very helpful. I had to go to the dentist and Inma was awesome! The soccer team I joined was so much fun and my roommates were very cool.

First of all, I cannot wait to say how AIFS and the stuff did a great job through this fall semester, including the activities that we all do together and extral help that I needed. I donot know what else i might say to do better, becuase they are taking care of us morethan any one that can discribe it. Also, I do not thing I can measure how much i have fun this years, Every thing that we have done is more than worthy. Finally, I would like to say thank you so much for taking care of me, I would not never forget your kindess.

I've meet so many people from all over the place. It is definitely the best time I have ever had and I'm extremely thankful for the experience. I will always have a special connection with the people that I have studied abroad with in this program.

I had a great time spending a semester in Barcelona. It really showed me how different the world is, but no only just how different countries were, but people from the different states who attended the program along with me. AIFS was great at planning and showing us different parts of Barcelona as well. We had many group dinners and city tours which helped expose us to parts of Barcelona that we might not have experienced othewise.
