Your Language + Culture program in Rabat lasts a full semester and is designed for students from all academic backgrounds. You will enroll in a combination of CIEE courses, one required language course, and courses taught online through CIEE's global academic partner, ASU. Examine the challenges shaping Morocco and the Arab world since the 2011 Arab Spring. Explore movements for human rights and social justice and the cultural transformations emerging from them. Study the present-day characteristics of these struggles through lenses such as gender, individual liberties, globalization, and political change. Excursions to the north and south offer a view of the systems of power and privilege that have produced inequality and unjust environmental conditions and organizations that are working to create change. The French-speaking world is a dynamic melting pot of language, history, and culture. Visit three prominent Francophone host cities in one semester—Paris, France; Rabat, Morocco; and Dakar, Senegal—for an interdisciplinary and reflective approach to study abroad. Discuss and analyze poignant topics in various fields while learning from each host city's perspective. All students take one common course, Introduction to France, Morocco, Senegal: Three Worlds, One Language, and choose the remaining three courses from the available course selection in literature, history, political science, gender studies, art history, economics, and more. All courses are taught in French by local professors highly regarded in their respective fields of study. Individual language support is organized each week. Take advantage of each host city's culture by participating in various thoughtfully planned cultural activities and excursions included in the program. Each student stays with a host family in every location. This is available for study abroad, gap year, or leave of absence. We also have online course options available. Fortify your Arabic language skills or begin your Arabic learning journey with the Amideast Education Abroad program in Rabat! Students have the option of taking a blended Modern Standard and Moroccan colloquial Arabic course and a diverse set of area studies courses. Participants can choose not to take Modern Standard Arabic, but will still hone their skills in Darija, the local Moroccan colloquial dialect, in a required course as well as with their homestay families. The homestay family experience gives students an intimate look at daily life and culture in Rabat. Organized excursions span exciting locations from the ancient medina of Fez to the quiet village of Zawyat Ahansal in the Atlas Mountains. Students can also take our Community-Based Learning course where they will strengthen and deepen their understanding of the Middle East through direct experience in local organizations and lectures that provide a theoretical framework for studying and interacting with Moroccan politics, society, and culture.

For thousands of years, Morocco has benefited from the cross-cultural exchange of Berber, Arab, African, and European peoples, customs, learning, and gastronomy. Today, Morocco is home to 34 million and is one of the most stable and moderate constitutional monarchies in the Arab World. The Middlebury School in Morocco, based in the capital city of Rabat, offers cultural and linguistic immersion through a rigorous curriculum and adherence to the Middlebury Language Pledge. By promising to speak only Arabic abroad, students have the best chance of acquiring fluency and actively engaging in the local environment. All coursework is conducted in Arabic, and students take their courses in a variety of subjects, from advanced Arabic courses to electives in North African Studies.
