Seamester Study Abroad and Gap Year Voyages

Seamester is the educational adventure of a lifetime! For more than 40 years, we have offered unparalleled educational voyages where students spend a semester at sea sailing between islands, countries, and even continents. We design our programs to provide engaging learning experiences with real outcomes in ways that are impossible to replicate in the traditional classroom. Living as part of a close-knit team on an ocean-going vessel, our students learn fundamental lessons beyond academics: teamwork, leadership, and personal responsibility. They receive academic credit from the University of South Florida, along with PADI scuba certifications and IYT sailing certifications. Our programs are designed to inspire students to realize that it’s the journey, not the destination, that matters the most.

Earth Expeditions in Galápagos: Islands of Change

The Galápagos Islands are a spectacular natural treasure and one of the best places on Earth to appreciate change. To biologists, a trip to the Galápagos is something of a pilgrimage to sacred evolutionary ground, for it was here in 1835 that Charles Darwin witnessed how giant tortoises, finches, and other taxa each varied from island to island across the archipelago—observations that, among many others, shaped Darwin’s ideas on evolution. For this course, we will be working with Ecology Project International (EPI), which championed inquiry-driven field science and sustainability for many years and made tremendous progress working with the Galápagos National Parks Service and others on ecological education. This course is also offered in partnership with the Houston Zoo. Students in this course should be prepared to explore the forces of change in the Galápagos and contribute directly to sustainable solutions to current issues. Before and following the field experience in Galápagos, students will complete coursework via Dragonfly Workshops' Web-Based Learning Community as they apply these experiences to their home institutions.

Galapagos Marine Research and Exploration

Travel to San Cristobal Island in the Galapagos Islands for two weeks on this study abroad adventure. With 97% uninhabited conservation land, the Galapagos Islands are home to many species, including sea lions, sea turtles, rays, hundreds of species of fish, hammerhead sharks, blue-footed boobies, and the famous Galapagos tortoise. During this program, students work alongside a marine instructor to help research marine fish populations of the Galapagos by tracking numbers in real-time in the water, creating a presentation of findings, and learning about the marine ecology of the area and the anatomy of the variety of marine species. They also learn to scuba dive and earn their Open Water Diver certificate. Time outside of coursework can be spent relaxing and exploring the pristine beaches, doing beach yoga, snorkeling, going on hikes, and seeing the sights in Quito.

An Unforgettable Experience

Studying abroad in Ecuador and the Galápagos Islands was a once-in-a-lifetime, life changing experience. As a biology major, I was looking to gain more knowledge and hands on experience with nature in other areas of the world. Getting to visit the Amazon Rainforest and staying in the Galápagos Islands fulfilled these desires! The courses I took exposed me to new material and were much more hands on than my courses at my home university. In fact, we spent more than half of our class time in the field in some of our courses. Besides the biological aspect, I had wanted to learn Spanish and experience life in another culture/country and Ecuador was perfect for both of these things! The people in both Quito and the islands were friendly and patient as I practiced my Spanish. As for the university and program staff, everyone was super approachable and there to help us adjust to a new life and environment. This experience taught me so many good lessons and I learned so much about my future aspirations. If you are looking for a study abroad program that is both culturally and biologically diverse, this is the program for you!
