Your Liberal Arts program in São Paulo lasts a full semester and is designed for students from all academic backgrounds who have Portuguese language skills. You will enroll in host institution courses delivered in Portuguese and online courses taught through CIEE's global academic partner, ASU. São Paulo is Brazil’s cultural capital, offering the perfect environment for language immersion and exploration.

Earth Expeditions (EE) are Miami University study abroad courses designed for people looking for inspiring professional development opportunities while earning graduate credit. All courses engage with grassroots conservation and sustainability programs making a difference in Africa, Asia, Australia, and the Americas. Our planned 2026 EE sites are the Amazon, Australia, Baja, Belize, Borneo, Brazil, Costa Rica, Galápagos, India, Kenya, Mongolia, Namibia, Paraguay, and Thailand. Awarding seven graduate credit hours (5 credits for the Summer Term + 2 credits for the Fall Semester), EE courses are hybrid and combine direct global study experiences with engagement in a web-based online learning community. Summer field courses typically run from mid-May through mid-August, with pre-course work beginning in April. The international field “in-country” portion of each class generally lasts 9-10 days. The 2-credit-hour follow-on fall semester course, “Inquiry & Action,” is entirely online and typically runs from late August to mid-December. This component is optional for students taking an EE course for stand-alone graduate credit outside the master’s program.

Along with the famous Carnival, you will experience a diverse music and dancing scene, as well as futebol (soccer), the national pastime of Brazil. You will also enjoy other fun activities such as boating, volleyball, and basketball. From the lush Amazon to the Samba-filled streets, the diversity of Brazil is waiting for you. YFU is a homestay experience where you will live with a carefully selected host family who has agreed to open their home and their hearts, providing you room, board, and a caring home. You'll gain a global family, make new friends, and attend a new school. Brazil’s capital of the southern state of Santa Catarina, Florianópolis, is on an island featuring breathtaking scenery and vibrant cultural and university life. Students enroll at the Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, where students can experience firsthand the life of Brazilian students. They live in a homestay, allowing access to the life of a local family. Through coursework, various extracurricular activities with peers, internships, or volunteer work, they are expected to "live the language" in Florianópolis. The Middlebury - C.V. Starr Schools Abroad are characterized by a commitment to language development. Students sign and honor the Language Pledge, promising to speak only the target language during their time abroad. Those already at an advanced level of Portuguese come away from the program with superior language skills and the fact that they have gained an authentic study abroad experience.
