I was never 100% sure that making the decision to spend my last three weeks of my travel abroad volunteering in El Salvador was the right one, but my host and organiser Joaquin Batres sure changed my apprehension about going. From the very beginning, the correspondence over emails was always so quick, any queries I had where quickly answered and in those three weeks at the volunteer house, My life was enriched by everyday living in Santa tecla, I was quick to adjust to the neighbourhoods, And ease into volunteer teaching. The beautiful school children are so responsive to new volunteers like me coming in. So many hugs! And I guess curiosity about our stories and where we come from. I learnt just as much from the girls as they (hopefully) did from me. Joaquin was so accommodating to My needs, he sure changed my opinion of El Salvador and showed me the true beauty of the country. I would recommend this program to anyone.it was the best thing i have done and learnt skills that can only really be obtained from life experience !

Honestly the best experience I have ever had with a volunteer program, and all thanks to Joaquin. He has created such an incredible program at Margarita Duran School as well as being the best tour guide ever when I wasn’t at school. I immediately felt at home in El Salvador both with Joaquin and at the school. He truly goes above and beyond to make you feel comfortable and help you with any thing, and I mean absolutely anything you need wether it be finding food or organising doctors appointments. Truly an experience I will never ever forget, when I wasn’t at school Joaquin made sure there was always something fun to do or see, he would often make weekend trips to see the beautiful sights of El Salvador. He has the biggest heart of any one I know. I will never forget my experience in El Salvador with Teaching You. Thank you Joaquin

Traveling to El Salvador as a volunteer was an amazing experience. The people were really warm and friendly and I learned a lot of things. One of the best things there was the food which was delicious.

I won't lie, I was a bit unsure and unprepared when I first decided to go to El Salvador for 5 weeks with Teaching You. It's no secret that there are unfortunate issues within the country that can make a person have doubts about visiting. But the people of El Salvador are genuine and the culture of this country is beautiful. You first in encounter this with the coordinator, Joaquin. Joaquin is an awesome coordinator and underneath his playful exterior, he is a man with a huge heart and serious dedication for the girls at the Margarita Duran School. There is no way to sugarcoat that some of these girls come from rough backgrounds, it is so important that they have a positive experience at school and have a love for learning so they can have better lives. But it is not all about school life with Teaching You! A unique aspect about this program is that you have some independence to explore and grow on your own, even walking to and from the school, or going grocery shopping is a unique experience. Some of my favorite things other than the students are Tienda's, pupusas and the liveliness of Santa Tecla's downtown area, Paseo del Carmen. There are many other activities incorporated into the program as well. Beach trips, volcano hiking and trips to charming towns like Suchitoto. I highly recommend this program, it's an affordable way to see an amazing country while also giving back to the community.
(Also, I am including a picture of the mountains/volcanos that you can see from pretty much anywhere anywhere in Santa Tecla. I am from Florida, a VERY flat landscape so the beautiful volcanos and mountains were a real treat for me to see).
A truly unforgettable experience!!

Volunteering with Teaching You in El Salvador was an amazing, life-changing experience. The school community is extremely welcoming and the girls will open their hearts to you within seconds of your arrival. I spent two incredible months at the Margarita Duran School and will treasure every moment for the rest of my life. I would consider myself quite the experienced traveler but I must say, El Salvador tops all of my trips abroad and with good reason...I look forward to returning to this beautiful country very soon! :)
