Traveling to El Salvador as a volunteer was an amazing experience. The people were really warm and friendly and I learned a lot of things. One of the best things there was the food which was delicious.

I won't lie, I was a bit unsure and unprepared when I first decided to go to El Salvador for 5 weeks with Teaching You. It's no secret that there are unfortunate issues within the country that can make a person have doubts about visiting. But the people of El Salvador are genuine and the culture of this country is beautiful. You first in encounter this with the coordinator, Joaquin. Joaquin is an awesome coordinator and underneath his playful exterior, he is a man with a huge heart and serious dedication for the girls at the Margarita Duran School. There is no way to sugarcoat that some of these girls come from rough backgrounds, it is so important that they have a positive experience at school and have a love for learning so they can have better lives. But it is not all about school life with Teaching You! A unique aspect about this program is that you have some independence to explore and grow on your own, even walking to and from the school, or going grocery shopping is a unique experience. Some of my favorite things other than the students are Tienda's, pupusas and the liveliness of Santa Tecla's downtown area, Paseo del Carmen. There are many other activities incorporated into the program as well. Beach trips, volcano hiking and trips to charming towns like Suchitoto. I highly recommend this program, it's an affordable way to see an amazing country while also giving back to the community.
(Also, I am including a picture of the mountains/volcanos that you can see from pretty much anywhere anywhere in Santa Tecla. I am from Florida, a VERY flat landscape so the beautiful volcanos and mountains were a real treat for me to see).
A truly unforgettable experience!!

Volunteering with Teaching You in El Salvador was an amazing, life-changing experience. The school community is extremely welcoming and the girls will open their hearts to you within seconds of your arrival. I spent two incredible months at the Margarita Duran School and will treasure every moment for the rest of my life. I would consider myself quite the experienced traveler but I must say, El Salvador tops all of my trips abroad and with good reason...I look forward to returning to this beautiful country very soon! :)

Being with TeachingYou during my trip to El Salvador enhanced my experience exponentially. In comparison to my other worldly travels, this program and especially Joaquin, will ensure that your experience will be, adventurous, relaxing, and safe. Joaquin will make sure that he country is represented well, and that you will have an unforgettable experience and an amazing impression of their people, especially towards the children that you will meet within the volunteer program. I definitely recommend anyone looking to join this program should dive right in with a guarantee that you will not regret the decision in the least.

My experience in El Salvador is one I will always hold in a very special place in my heart. Working with the kids and teachers in the school, preparing lessons was fulfilling and enjoyable work. Everyone immediately makes you feel welcomed and Joaquin does a freaking amazing job as a coordinator! He is there for you at all times and guides you through preparations and your stay. He contributed greatly to the beautiful and life-changing experience I had with the people and culture in El Salvador. It was challenging at times to be faced with the disadvantages the kids have over there. Educational and economical, but this program is a very good opportunity to give help exactly where needed. The kids are amazing and as a non-spanish speaker they helped finding a way to communicate with them. I stayed at the volunteer house, which was a great home for my time there, even with the cold showers. ;) Joaquin put a lot of effort in it to make it homey for the volunteers. If you are looking for an overall intense and great experience, go to El Salvador!
