Marvelous marine biology in Mexico

The marine biology Puerto Peñasco, Mexico trip was the best experience I’ve had in my life so far. I made so many friends, and learned so much during the trip. Not just school learning like writing and reading, but a lot about myself too. I was basically living with a group of 14 people for a week. We got to know and trust each other really well in that week. As for the education part of the trip, it was amazing. We were out in the field learning hands on about marine life and conservation. Tide pooling, kayaking, snorkeling or scuba diving, were the activities that stuck out most to me. We learned about estuaries and the life that lives there while sitting in kayaks on an estuary! For tide pooling our classroom was actual tide pools, where I got bit by an octopus (but that’s another story for another time). We got to experience first hand what it was like underwater where sea lions and other cool creatures lived by snorkeling or scuba diving if you were certified. I had sea lions bumping into me when I was snorkeling and it’s was one of the most amazing things I have ever experienced. It’s almost a spiritual eye opening experience. I did not want to leave Mexico when it came time to head home. I learned how independent and confident I could be in an unfamiliar place with people I had only met once before. I learned to put my trust in people and to respect the natural world around me even more. I am perusing a career in marine biology after going on this trip. It confirmed the love I have for marine biology and helped me figure out what I want to contribute to this world with confidence and determination. I would recommend this study abroad trip to everyone with the slightest interest in the marine world. You will learn more than you ever thought possible in a week, surrounded by amazing people.
