I had the amazing opportunity to visit Rome over this past spring break for a study abroad program with Gustolab. This week was everything I could have asked for in the trip and far more. We utilized every second we had to explore Rome and learn about food businesses in the area. From vineyard trips to agritourism farms, I got to see these businesses upfront and get a hands on experience while hearing from the owners and experts in the industry. I was always so excited for the next store/farm/restaurant that we had planned to visit for the day (very excited to see if there was a food tasting waiting for us!). My understanding of the food culture in Italy was completely broadened and enhanced from this study abroad experience with Gusto lab. I wish I could do it all over again!

Studying in Rome with GustoLab exceeded all of my expectations. As someone who had never traveled to outside of the US/Canada, I was absolutely blown away by everything this program had to offer. GustoLab helped fully immerse their students into Italian culture teaching us everything we need to know to thrive in the beautiful city. I have a completely new perspective on the world as a whole as well as food culture and sustainability. I needed this experience to open my eyes to different cultures and it did just that. I now feel more confident back in the US to pursue my goals and it gave me a sense of adventure I had never endured. I can't wait to go abroad again in the future and Rome will always have a huge place in my heart thanks to GustoLab and the people I met throughout the journey.

Gustolab Internation is such a unique study abroad program. If you are interested in food, sustainability or the culture of Italy, this is the right program for you.  The classes are very informational, and most classes are out within the city of Rome, instead of in the classroom. Because of this, I went to a variety of places I would have never found on my own. Plus, Gustolab allows you to participate in very unique events such as hackathons and conferences. The housing proved was in the heart of Trastevere, and a short walk to most major monuments in the city center such as the pantheon. The staff was also very helpful, with both getting settled in Rome, and translating with locals when needed. The staff encouraged us to experience Rome in a unique way, where you felt at home instead of feeling like a tourist. Overall, I would recommend this program to anyone who is interested in the food culture and food systems of Italy.

Vegan foodie studies sustainability and stays full in Rome!

While abroad, I learned that there are amazing people doing amazing work to combat the social and environmental issues that I am passionate about. I got a first hand experience in regards to how important it is to get worldly views of these issues and to compare and contrast how effectively they are being dealt with in one place versus another. My favorite part about Gustolab was how hands on the entire learning experience was. I think that inside the class room, what was asked from us was incredibly fair. I don't think I would been able to get the full experience of Rome if I had taken another course or had more work to do. However, I do believe that one of the responsibilities of being accepted to a program that encourages constant critical thinking and the immersion of yourself into the culture, is being constantly active and engaged during your stay. How Salem, Margherita, and Maria Palos can handle so many students at one time I will never know. Together, they are always there for anyone who needs anything literally ever. I greatly appreciated them throughout my stay in Rome in addition to my professors and Sonia Massari. Rome has UNREAL vegan food. I was so surprised and so thankful for the amount of restaurants I found that had no issue accommodating to me. It gave me so much hope to find and eat at all vegan/vegetarian establishments while studying sustainable food systems abroad. I highly highly highly recommend either knowing Italian before you go or taking a class while you are there. I found social interactions to be so incredibly beautiful and was bummed I could not engage myself because I did not know any Italian myself.

A phenomenal experience

The staff were amazing and really helped make our transition into 'life in Rome' really easy. We had excellent support from the staff and our professors. As a pre-med, the classes were very very veryyy relaxed compared to what I was used to at my home institution, which I loved. The classes we took were chosen for us, which I didn't like, but they were interesting. The food was the best part. When we were out with Gustolab, we ate like kings. I was always overful, but somehow lost weight (from all of the walking?) during the trip. I learned a lot about olive oil and wine, which guides the way I approach foods provided here in the USA. I am very picky with my food now because I have experienced what delicious food is, and I am forever grateful to this experience for that. I would definitely recommend this program if you're looking to learn about how deeply intertwined food and the Italian culture actually are. OR, if you just want to have amazing life-changing experiences and eat fantastic food, THIS IS THE PROGRAM FOR YOU!

Great to learn about sustainability and food culture in Italy

I would definitely choose the same program again. It was a perfect combination of time spent inside the classroom and time spent outside of it. As a psychology major I was exposed to a completely different field that I came to appreciate. My favorite part of the whole semester abroad was spending two whole weeks learning about the production of Olive Oil and Wine, where as a result we got to stay in a beautiful organic farm for a whole week, visited vineyards in Tuscany and Umbria, and olive tree orchards in Campania. Overall, the Food and Culture program at GustoLab was definitely a great immersion to the Italian food culture.

A great cultural experience

Rome is a beautiful city with so much to see and do. The food studies program took advantage of this by integrating field trips to meet with local food professionals into our studies. Exploring Rome through the eyes of our professors was a great way to see a different side of the city that we otherwise wouldn't have. I learned so much about wine, sustainability, and Italian culture as a whole and would definitely recommend this program!

The only way to experience Rome!

My time abroad was truly a once in a lifetime experience. We all learned a lot about Italian culture, specifically through field trips and classroom work. Our program focused on food systems so we also got to taste the most amazing Italian cuisine. This program is a perfect blend of traditional classroom time and time to really experience Rome with local people. This was the best semester I had during my time in college and I highly recommend it to anyone!
