A Guide to Learning Korean in South Korea
Best Locations
South Korea is a compact East Asian country, jam-packed with natural beauty and bustling urban spaces. The country is safely tucked away between the Yellow Sea and the Sea of Japan. Most Korean language programs in South Korea are amid the constant movement of Korea's cities, but students can easily get away to Korea's mountainous countryside or tranquil coastal areas too.
The hustle and bustle of Seoul is perfect for language students seeking non-stop action. South Korea's capital is full of modern skyscrapers and technological innovations. Namdaemun Gate is the oldest and most famous place to walk among Seoul’s 600 year old city walls. Steps away from state-of-the-art attractions, students can explore Korea’s ancient culture of reconstructed palaces, temples, and markets. The Gwangjang Market is Seoul’s largest food alley, where students can practice their new vocabulary ordering one of the 250 types of kimchi found in Korea.
Gyeongsan is home to a few universities, which means it is packed with international and local students alike, making it a common destination for studying Korean in Korea. This city boosts a vibrant, modern atmosphere with a mix of ancient history; you can even step back into regal times to explore tombs and small hillocks that once held the city's kings, queens, and nobles.
What Else You Need to Know
Korean language programs in Korea are top notch, as education is the pride of the country’s people and something that is considered valuable from an early age. You can count on intensive Korean language lessons and instructors with a hardworking and caring mentality, which are necessary ingredients for successfully learning Korean in Korea.
Popular class types. Most Korean language schools provide learning experiences in a small group setting, that can be personalized for your fluency level and speed of acquisition. Korean language courses at universities are typically a good fit for students who want to learn Korean at a higher level and interested in potentially transferring language credits back to their home universities.
How long should your program be? Programs vary in length, lasting anywhere from three to ten weeks. The time it takes to learn Korean depends greatly on the person, so be patient while learning the basics. Once you learn the ropes, you may find yourself extending your stay and ticking off “fluent in Korean” on job applications in no time.
Consider a homestay. Homestays are the most rewarding accommodation available, and great for practicing your new language skills; not to mention, you’ll get to experience Korean culture firsthand with your host family daily. It's no secret that home-cooked Korean meals will fire up your conservations at the dinner table. Koreans are incredibly welcoming, so you'll feel right at home.
GoAbroad’s Inside Scoop
Your Facebook friends will quadruple. Koreans are extremely hardworking and polite. At the same time, they’re all about genuine friendships and social events. You'll have no trouble finding study partners and even new friends to practice your new Korean vocab with. Embrace the challenge and next time you're at Korean karaoke, you'll know the lyrics to those crazy K-pop songs by heart.
Not many locals speak English. While the English speaking level in Korea has improved, many Koreans lack the practice and only grasp the basics in a conversation. Never fear; you didn't fly all the way to Korea to improve your mother tongue. Learning Korean in Korea will advance your language skills faster than Samsung can launch their next technological innovation. You'll quickly be pushed outside of your comfort zone, and if you want someone to pass the soy sauce, learn to politely ask in Korean.
Korea is a sizzling hot destination for language students who want to discover more than deliciously spicy food and leave fuller than after chowing down a meal of Korean BBQ. The ancient culture, technological marvels, and beautiful rural landscapes will land you hundreds of likes on Instagram. While Korean might not be as widely used as English or Spanish, mastering this language will make you standout more than PSY’s number one hit, “Gangnam Style.”

A Great Place to Learn Korean
July 30, 2026by: Sabrina Daniels - United StatesI really enjoyed my time studying at LTL Seoul. My teacher was patient, encouraging, and created a comfortable classroom environment that made learning Korean enjoyable. The staff were also very kind, welcoming, and friendly, which made the school feel like a great place to learn. One of my favorite parts was the weekly activities, especially the lunches after class. They were a great way to get to know other students and made it much easier to feel comfortable meeting people from different countries. My Korean definitely improved during my time at LTL, and overall I had a wonderful experience. I would definitely recommend LTL to anyone looking to study Korean in Korea.

Thanks for your lovely words, Sabrina! Really happy to have helped boost your Korean! Hope you continue to improve and let's do it all again another time?! LTL Team
LTL Seoul Summer 2026
July 29, 2026by: Adrian Chung - United KingdomI spent a total of 6 weeks of small group classes at LTL Seoul in May and June and I words cannot describe how much fun I had. The school itself is very nice, all the staff were really kind and helpful. I asked to change classes a couple of times and they were very happy to help me do so. Minji's lessons were so fun and engaging and she was the best teacher so I was able to really improved my Korean so much during my short time there. I also really enjoyed all the activities which were organised by the school every week, where I was able to hang out with my friends I had made there while also exploring the city. It was a good mix of both cultural and fun activities so thanks to Sebastian for organising those! Overall I really recommend of you are considering a language school in Seoul as you will not regret it!

So glad to have you in Seoul with us, Adrian and even more delighted that you had a winderful time with us! It was a pleasure to have you here and we hope to see you again in the future :) Keep up the Korean!! LTL Team
LTL Korean Language School Seoul
December 31, 2025by: Jesse Maiava - United StatesI studied at LTL Korean Language School for about 77 days, starting Korean from absolute beginner level and progressing to elementary level, and I had a genuinely great experience. I learned so much that I didn’t know beforehand, and the teaching style made Korean feel approachable and practical from day one. The environment was relaxed, supportive, and motivating, which made it easy to stay consistent and enjoy learning. What really stood out was the staff and community. The team didn’t just teach — they truly cared about the students. They organized school activities, took us out to eat together, and created chances to connect and practice Korean outside the classroom. Huge thanks to Hailey, Lio, Manuel, 현영, and especially my teacher 고민시 — everyone was incredibly kind, patient, and helpful throughout my time there. If you’re serious about learning Korean and want a school that feels welcoming, engaging, and well-organized, I highly recommend LTL.
Love to hear it Jesse! Delighted you've had a great time with us. You've made super progress and it's a pleasure to have you around LTL Seoul. Keep up the great work! LTL Team
My time learning in South Korea
December 15, 2025by: Catherine Vincent - United StatesI had so much fun! I thought the material was taught really well, and it was pretty easy to understand what we were learning. The afternoon activities were also really fun! I got to go to so many different places and experience so many different things in the Korean culture. I also thought the program had a nice balance of work/class time, mandatory activities, and free time. With that nice balance got to do what I wanted to do and even would have some time to myself during the week.

Excellent language school!
February 28, 2025by: Shannon Mitchell - United StatesLTL really makes the whole process easy, from asking questions, to registering for the course, housing, ect. They are there to help before you come to Korea and still there for you once your in Korea. Staff and teachers have all been kind and informative. Really feel like I needed this language course to improve in my learning Korean journey! Truly recommend homestay as you get someone to practice speaking with and they are truely hospitable! And helpful in other ways as well. Drew me a map of how to get to the subway and even showed me multiple ways to get there and back home. I'm easily lost and had never taken the subway before so I really appreciated that!

Intensive Language lessons
August 28, 2024by: Helga Sz - HungaryWhile my 2 months stay in Korea, I opted to subscribe in LTL Language school, perfect location as walking distance from Hongdae. I did intensive lessons 20h/week with a great teacher, 지수 ?, on 1-1 lesson and it was just great! She was a real treasure to me by explaining all in detail, while focusing on speaking, reading and repeating, so I really see a difference in my every day Korean. I hope to come back in October again.
Love to hear it, Helga :) We'll pass your kind words onto 지수. See you again in October. LTL Team
Made lasting connections!
August 28, 2024by: Kennedi-Grace Magaoay - United StatesThrough this program I was able to branch out further than I ever would have at home. I made more than just friends from this experience. I gained sisters from Korea, forever friends from the states, and a new beat friend from Germany! This is an experience I would highly recommend to anyone! It doesn’t even have to be for language enthusiasts.

My daughter had an amazing experience
March 19, 2020by: Lara Strong - United StatesI was somewhat nervous sending my daughter on a Langubridge program because we didn't know anything about the program other than what we found on the website. We eventually found their facebook page and were reassured that it was a legitimate program. I was impressed right from the start by how organized langubridge was, and generally my questions were answered before I had a chance to ask them. He pick up at the airport in Korea went seamlessly. She was set up with a wonderful family who welcomed her into their home, were eager to talk to her and help her out and show her many sides of Korea. Langubridge also had a wonderful, varied program that involved cooking, a fish farm, taekwondo, k-pop dancing and a theatre performance among others. My daughter also made a lot of great friends who shared her love of languages, travel and Korean culture (A year later and she is still in touch with these friends and with her Korean family). She found Seoul to be a safe city that was a lot of fun to explore. The language program was also excellent and my daughter's Korean language skills improved dramatically because of all the opportunities to practice. I highly recommend this to anyone with an interest in Korea, and don't worry if you're not sure you have knack for languages. You'll be fine!
An Eye-Opening Summer Experience!
March 14, 2020by: Desiree Sng - SingaporeSince this is my first time traveling alone and going to a foreign country without my family, I was extremely nervous about going on this summer program. But in the end, I had nothing to worry about! And if I had the chance, I would do this all again. Once I stepped into Korea, I was immediately greeted by my host family. They were extremely nice and knew some English as well, which was helpful for me. Their home was very cozy and convenient to a lot of beautiful places around Seoul! Before language school started, the host family would bring my roommate and me to famous sightseeing places and take us out to eat delicious food! Fortunately, they also taught us how to ride the subway so that we knew how to go to school. I met very diverse and welcoming people of different ages and backgrounds in the program as well! As an international student who lives in China, it was refreshing to have people from various parts of the world coming together to experience this summer program. When everyone was divided into different classes (we took an orientation test to determine everyone's level of fluency in Korean), I bonded well with my classmates and our teacher, who was immensely patient and kind to us. Sometimes, our teacher would even give us Korean videos to watch to help us in our Korean! Lastly, what I found most eye-opening about this entire experience was the Korean culture and activities in the program and outside the program. If I listed out all the things I did in Seoul, it would probably be too overwhelming to read. Nonetheless, I am grateful that my experiences include a mix of Korean history and culture, food, shopping (which I don't usually do), and casual activities with friends (karaoke all the way!). I also find this program to be extremely flexible in allowing students to arrange their own time to do activities they want to do; in the 2019 schedule, we would have Sunday and another weekday to spend freely, whether that's by hanging out with our host family, friends from the program, going places by yourself (with safety as a priority), etc. Overall, if you're thinking about signing up for this program, I highly recommend you! Not only was this eye-opening for me in learning more about Korea, but also making new friends of different ages and nationalities as well as learning how to be independent in a foreign country with people who speak a different language! I can say that I have matured from this program and taken a different perspective of the world around me, so I hope you consider this program to be one way you can spend your summer!
A summer to remember
December 11, 2019by: Caitlyn Chen - United StatesThis past summer, I studied abroad in Korea and it was a new experience that allowed me to grow as a person. Besides the academic and cultural parts of the trip, I had to adjust to living without my parents and the safety of my familiar surroundings. Being placed in a wonderful homestay family definitely helped me adjust to the country and made me feel welcomed. Learning the basics of the language, its subculture, as well as its culture broaden my views upon a country so new to me. I have learned that visiting historical sites and learning a part of a country's history while in that country makes the experience much more personal, one that you could never get from a textbook. Total cultural immersion really forced me to practice what I learned in class. This allowed me to retain information better than if I had taken courses in the States. The amount of freedom we had just to explore was such a treat. Being from New York where everyone is always rushing to places, it was so nice to walk without a destination and absorb all the scenery around me. The administration was very helpful and always willing to hear your concerns and help out where they could. I never once felt unsafe during my stay in Korea and enjoyed each and every moment. I made so many new friends from all over the world that I would have never had met otherwise and still keep in contact with today. Despite only being there for a short period of time, this opportunity had left me with memories and experiences I will never forget and the feeling of wanting to study abroad again.
