A Guide to Learning Japanese in Tokyo
How to Learn Japanese in Tokyo
It’s best to go into the a Japanese language school in Tokyo with your eyes wide open (and your shoes off — customs are key). By no means are you taking on an easy challenge, and fluency will only come with hard work, patience, and dedication. In fact, to become completely fluent in Japanese, you might expect to commit a year of consistent study (four or more hours per week). The rewards for your commitment will however be great, so kneel down with a cup of tea while you read through the details.
Being that Japanese is a tricky language to master, a fully immersive course is certainly the most efficient way to start. If you live to learn, take a look at programs that include private tuition and homestay accommodation. You’ll live with your teacher in these programs, which means that you’ll have endless opportunities to practice your skills and no excuse to miss class! The homestay not only solves your logistical needs, but it also offers unlimited openings to develop a deeper understanding of the local culture (the wasabi to your edamame!).
If you’re not quite ready to make Japanese language learning your entire lifestyle, you may consider attending one of the best Japanese language schools in Tokyo. Most of these programs offer Japanese language courses for several hours per day as well as excursions and cultural integration activities along with the classes. This is a great way to meet other Japanese language students with whom you can share support and understanding for the language’s mastery over a well-earned glass of sake.
Life in Tokyo
Learn Japanese in Tokyo, a modern, thriving urban center, which will blow you away with its towering skyline and glowing neon signs. You’ll never be bored in this sprawling expanse of opportunity, which offers a diverse array of sightseeing options. From thriving nightlife to peaceful strolls in Yoyogi Park to traditional sites like Meiji Shrine, there’s plenty to keep you occupied in your free time. Tokyo’s modernity also brings with it a convenience that makes adapting to life in Japan easier than it might be in more rural parts of the country.
Some practical advice for settling in would be to get acquainted with Tokyo’s vast underground rail network. Getting around should be a whizz with Japanese levels of efficiency present on the rails. You can pick up a day pass to cover some exploration centric transport needs, but with several ticket options available, make sure that your purchase covers all of your desired stopping points!
When it comes to finances, you don’t always get as much miso soup for your Yen as you might in rural areas of Japan, so think about reducing costs by eating locally and cooking for yourself while attending a Japanese language school in Tokyo. Avoid the more touristed areas of town if you want to restrict your splashing out to soup from a bowl rather than your bank account! Finally, don’t forget to utilize contacts at your language school or via your host to help you navigate these practicalities.
Accommodations in Tokyo
When it comes to accommodation, the immersive programs to study Japanese in Tokyo are ideal, as they include a homestay and remove the hassle of having to find a place upon arrival. This might be possible with some of the language schools as well, where dormitories or shared apartments might be available for students to cohabitate.
If you need to find your own zen home from home, look for hostels and apartment shares catering specifically to longer term guests for better value options. Consider reaching out to your language school classmates who might know of available spaces or have advice and contacts following their personal searches. Prices in Tokyo reflect the city’s desirable living status, and this will be reflected in the cost of accommodation too. If you’re concerned about busting your budget sumo style, it may be worth choosing an all-inclusive study program to save time and Yen.
GoAbroad Insider Tips
When it comes to challenges, it’s no surprise to most that learning Japanese is a big one in itself. Being a complex and intricate language, you’ll have to work hard to achieve your goals. The language is simply too complex for a computer to adequately fulfil this role, and people remain essential to cross-border communication with Japan. Those same language skills could open doors to new opportunities in the business world, amidst the thriving Japanese economy!
The cultural understanding and adaptation skills you’ll acquire as you learn to live and study Japanese in Tokyo are of further benefit to your employability. These transferable capabilities show a diversity to your experience and make you more desirable to employers across numerous sectors of the job market. Your newly developed language skills will allow you to travel with ease and to understand more of what you see, read, and hear as you go.
Tokyo is an ideal base to learn Japanese and integrate with the local lifestyle. The city is well equipped with language schools and programs, a sound infrastructure, and connections to other parts of the country for weekend adventures!

Perfect balance between education and culture
August 07, 2026by: Philipp Klein - GermanyI had the honor of joining LTL as one of the first students at their newly opened Osaka school, and from day one, I felt right at home. The teachers and staff are warm, welcoming, and genuinely engaged with their students. I’d studied Japanese for several months back home before arriving, but I learned more in just two weeks at LTL (4 hours of group classes plus 2 hours of individual lessons daily) than I had in all that time. I also appreciated that they rotate teachers rather than assigning just one — it kept things exciting, since I got to learn from different teaching styles and perspectives. Learning doesn’t stop when class ends. LTL organizes plenty of excursions and get-togethers to practice Japanese with locals — festival outings, dinners, a beach trip, origami, calligraphy, and more. Classes group students of the same proficiency level but from a range of backgrounds and ages, which made studying even more enjoyable since I was learning about other cultures alongside the language. Accommodation-wise, I stayed in a private apartment, while some classmates opted for a host family — both seemed to work out well, and everyone I spoke to was happy with their choice
So pleased you had a great time at LTL Osaka! It's been a pleasure to see how much progress you've in such a short space of time. Hope to see you back in Osaka again, or of course LTL Tokyo! Best wishes, LTL Team
LTL Tokio ist klasse!
May 31, 2026by: Iris John - GermanyIch kann LTL in Tokio (Akihabara) uneingeschränkt empfehlen!
LTL Team

May 02, 2026by: Franco Velez - SpainI studied LTL Japanese Language School Tokyo and had a great experience. The teachers were attentive, classes engaging, good study methods and I made fast progress in speaking and understanding. Highly recommended.

Learning Fast While Feeling at Home and Making Good Friends 🌏🫶🏻
April 02, 2026by: Marlene Huber - GermanyProgram: Japanese Language Study in Tokyo JaLS Shibuya Campus
Best language school so far! I’ve never learned this much in such a short time compared to other language schools. The classes can be a bit challenging at the beginning because they are very fast-paced, but it’s amazing to see how quickly you improve from day to day. Everyone is incredibly helpful—especially the school manager and staff, who always lend a hand and truly care about all the students. What I loved most is the opportunity to meet people from all over the world in the large lobby, whether for lunch or studying together. My classmates became friends, but I also connected with people from other classes—so you’re never alone 🫶🏻 The school offers great social activities (e.g. visiting famous places or conversation practice), and we often spent time together after class as well. On top of that, the facilities are very modern, creating a calm and inspiring environment for learning a new language. When the weather was good, Fuji-San welcomed us for morning classes. The view is amazing because the school is on the 23rd floor. Since I had just arrived in Tokyo, I found the location of the school perfect for exploring beautiful parks, cafés, shrines, and more. I definitely want to come back soon! It truly felt like a family. Thank you so much for making me more comfortable talking in Japanese and my pleasant stay.
Definitely recommend choosing Langubridge for an exchange!
December 07, 2025by: JJ J - CanadaProgram: Summer Japanese Immersion Program
I did the summer Tokyo exchange with LanguBridge and it was an unforgettable experience. The staff there took great care of everyone and made each part of the process smooth, from airport pickup to getting settled and everything along the way. My host family was amazing and we got along great, and I had so much fun in the classes. All the Japanese teachers put a bunch of effort into the lessons and came along on the trips/activities and they honestly did so much more than they needed to. Originally, the language class I was in was too easy for me and the school ended up making a higher level class for me and another girl, and I’m honestly still grateful that they went out of their way to do that! When planning my exchange, I went through a ton of programs, researched a lot and was so nervous about almost every aspect of the exchange but I can confidently say my experience was 100% perfect and I’m really happy I chose to go to Japan with Langubridge. You really won’t regret it if you go with them!
Summer Camp for 15yo
November 04, 2025by: A W - United StatesMy 15yo son attended the Tokyo Summer Camp for two weeks in June/July 2025 and he loved it! He enjoyed the language instruction and variety of planned activities. He also made good friends with fellow students and his homestay took him to several places to experience Tokyo as a local. It is well-worth the cost of the program and we plan to have him attend again next summer!
Thanks for your kind words :) Happy to hear your son had a blast. Hope to see you both again in 2026! LTL Team
Amazing time at Tokyo JALS (:
October 31, 2025by: Michael Saalfeld - GermanyProgram: Japanese Language Study in Tokyo JaLS Shibuya Campus
I studied here for 4 weeks, and I can honestly say that Tokyo JALS is an amazing place to learn Japanese, and to experience Tokyo at its best! I started out as a complete beginner, and I had a great time! The organizers and the teachers are very friendly, funny, caring and responsible. Also, the school is just plain beautiful! It is located in the 23rd floor of a modern skyscraper in the center of Shibuya. The view is amazing! And the warm and stylish amenities make you feel really comfortable while studying. Thanks to the flexible model of the school, students from all age groups, all countries, and all walks of life studied with me. As the school provides a lot of afternoon activities, I got to meet my fellow students a lot, which was very enriching to me. Through these afternoon activities, I also got to see a lot of cool and interesting places in Tokyo I would have otherwise missed. I'm super thankful and happy that I got to study here (:
Most improvement ever in two weeks
September 29, 2025by: Kolja Philipp Debus - GermanyThe LTL school in Tokyo, Japan, has helped me tremendously to improve my everyday and also formal written language skills. All three teachers were empathetic, yet demanding of focus and will to learn. The other staff made it their very successful job to get every obstacle out of the way and provide events, accomodation and cultural insights whenever possible. I am grateful and would have happily prolonged my stay and learning.
Great to hear it, Kolja :) So glad you made big improvements. Come back again soon and we'll do it all again! LTL Team
Highly recommend LTL Tokyo for language and activities
September 11, 2025by: Liv Cat - FranceOur son Alexis joined the 3-week summer program in Tokyo and had an amazing experience. The teachers were professional and supportive, and the classes were both fun and effective. He made great progress in Japanese and really enjoyed studying with other students. The afternoon and Saturday activities were also amazing — they gave him the chance to explore Tokyo and practice the language in real situations. He also made new friends from around the world that he will keep in touch with. The school’s support was excellent throughout, and everything went very smoothly. We highly recommend LTL Tokyo to anyone looking for a welcoming and motivating environment to learn Japanese!
A life changing experience
July 17, 2025by: Kennedy Biddulph - United StatesProgram: Immersive Language Program in Tokyo

It was the best month in my life!
July 10, 2025by: Amira Vakhitova - RussiaMy time in Japan has truly been one of the most unforgettable and meaningful experiences of my life. This was my very first trip to Japan, and to be honest, at the beginning I was quite nervous. Traveling to a country with such a unique language, culture, and lifestyle felt overwhelming — I didn’t know what to expect. But from the moment I arrived, all my worries started to fade. One of the most important things that made my experience so incredible was my host family. They were absolutely wonderful — warm, patient, and always willing to help me practice Japanese. Thanks to them, I was able to learn not only the language, but also understand the everyday life and values of Japanese culture. They taught me so much, and I’ll always be deeply grateful for the time we shared together. I truly felt at home. At the language school, the teachers were equally amazing. Each one of them had their own teaching style, but all of them were kind, professional, and attentive. They took the time to understand my level and learning needs, and supported me not only with grammar and vocabulary, but also with daily conversation practice, which really boosted my confidence. They even helped me prepare for an important exam, and thanks to their guidance, I felt much more capable and prepared. Aside from the lessons, the school offered a variety of cultural activities that made this experience even more enriching. I had the chance to try Japanese calligraphy, participate in a tea ceremony where we made and enjoyed matcha, and explore traditional arts that I had only ever seen in books or online. Every activity was fun, meaningful, and beautifully organized. We also went on excursions to some incredible places like Kawagoe and Enoshima. These trips gave me the opportunity to not only practice Japanese in real-life situations but also to learn about history, nature, and local traditions. And most importantly — I made so many new friends. Looking back, I’m just incredibly thankful — to the school, the teachers, my host family, and all the organizers who made this journey possible. This experience gave me not just better Japanese skills, but also a deeper understanding of the culture, and a lot of beautiful memories that I will carry with me forever. 🇯🇵🫶🏼
Amira, we're delighted to hear you had the best month ever with us in Tokyo! It means the world to read your review, and we couldn't be happier to see how excited you are! Keep up your Japanese, study hard and come back again next summer. We'll do it all together again :) Best wishes, LTL Team

Six great months at KCP in Tokyo
May 03, 2025by: Cooper Lundy - United StatesProgram: Learn Japanese in Tokyo, Japan
I recently studied Japanese at KCP International for six months. In that time my Japanese improved considerably. In just six months I went from struggling with simple sentences to being able to hold long conversations. The students and teachers at KCP helped me push my self everyday to get better at Japanese. The faculty at KCP were always there if I needed extra help with class or anything in my day to day life in Japan. KCP places a strong focus on speaking and essay writing, two parts of Japanese I struggled with the most when I studied on my own. Every week I could tell that my Japanese skills had progressed from the previous week. I had a wonderful time at KCP and I am hoping I will get the chance to study there again in the future.
If you want to learn Japanese go here
November 14, 2024by: Thomas Wisniewski - United StatesProgram: Learn Japanese in Tokyo, Japan
Japanese is often considered one of the most difficult languages for native English speakers to learn. After studying it seriously for several years, while I agree with that assessment generally, I think taking the plunge and studying Japanese is one of the most rewarding challenges you can give yourself. It is a beautiful language that in many ways is completely different from English. Towards that end, if you have chosen to study Japanese seriously, I think KCP is the best choice for building a stron g foundation for your Japanese. KCP is incredibly rigorous, in the Beginner and Intermediate levels there is a lot of homework and class prep. But you will realize that that is what's necessary in order to learn Japanese. However you won't be trudging through all this on your own. KCP has an excellent faculty who do their best to best support and challenge you on your way to understanding Japanese. Also the English speaking support staff are always ready to help if you need a hand with anything from finding an English speaking doctor to navigating the visa process. I highly recommend KCP for anyone who really wants to learn Japanese
Great experience
October 24, 2024by: Roberta Manis - ItalyIt was a wonderful experience for my 10-year-old daughter who attended a 3-week summer camp in Tokyo. She had Japanese lessons in the morning and went on trips around Tokyo every afternoon. It was an experience she would like to repeat.
Thanks for your kind words, Roberta :) We loved having your daughter with us in Tokyo and hope to see you again soon. Best wishes, LTL Team
I wholeheartedly recommend studying at Genki!
August 31, 2024by: Andres silva Vignoli - ItalyProgram: Learn Japanese with the Best: Study Abroad in Japan
My adventure with Genki started in 2023 when I did a 2 week study vacation. I chose them because they were accredited by the German government (state of Berlin) to provide Bildungsurlaub. I learned a great amount during those two weeks and made at least two new good friends with whom Im still in contact. Academically I found them really strong, they have a system where they alternate teachers every two hours so you get different perspectives and explanations while following a consistent program focused on useful grammar. I liked the school and the teaching system so much that I decided to continue online for a year. My online teacher has been fantastic and she took over exactly where I had left. One year later I decided to take more time off and come back for a month. This time was also great, I was in a more advanced smaller group, so we were able to make very fast progress. There was a public holiday during my time the school took us to see the Kabuki for free which was a fantastic plus. In summary: - location (Tokyo): unbeatable in the heart of Shinjuku - teaching staff: super kind, patient and competent. I was particularly impressed by Mamiko-sensei who really motivated us to talk and improve. - support staff: also very good and competent. We got a useful first day briefing and my questions and doubts were always promptly answered. - academic quality: its focus is on grammar and conversation there is a bit of Kanji every week, but you will probably need to study Kanji on your own. The method is good with some tests every few units to track progress. -cultural activities: they are optional but very very interesting combining food, culture, entertainment and creativity. They do repeat the more popular ones or seasonally appropriate ones sometimes. Definitely 5*+ and already hoping to go back again. More than the
That was a great school
August 13, 2024by: Efe Budur - TurkeyProgram: Learn Japanese with the Best: Study Abroad in Japan
Great for anyone who wants to learn Japanese and also have enough time to visit the surroundings. Teachers and staff are the best I have seen in my life, and to be honest I don't really think that I will be able to go back to my school after this amazing experience. Everybody is so lively and exciting, like really lively and sometimes funny. Lessons are always understandable, and the books they gave contains so much information that even if you don't have enough courage to ask the teachers books will always come in help. With the 4 hour class every weekday, you can always go to surrounding cities like Nara, Ōtsu and Osaka if you have mourning classes. Overall, such a great experience to have in life
I am enjoyed and at the same time I really learned Japanese not in a hard way but in an enjoyable way.
April 24, 2024by: Elizabeth kam - Hawaii (USA)I started the online course with Coto. And after that in the second week, I also joined a couple of private classes. So that kind of thing and then I noticed that Coto has some original materials online.
Exactly what you would want from immersive learning!
April 05, 2024by: Tiffany Oben - United KingdomProgram: Learn Japanese with the Best: Study Abroad in Japan
GenkiJACS one-month Japanese course provided a foundational understanding of the language. The course covered essential aspects such as grammar, vocabulary, listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Pros: 1) Small Class Sizes GenkiJACS maintains small class sizes, allowing for more personalized attention from instructors. This facilitates a conducive learning environment where students can actively engage and receive feedback. 2) Immersive Environment Being located in Fukuoka, Japan, GenkiJACS provides an immersive language learning experience. Students have opportunities to practice Japanese outside the classroom, enhancing their language learning in real-life interactions. 3) Varied Teaching Methods and Teachers GenkiJACS employs diverse teaching methods, including interactive exercises, role-playing, listening and comprehension activities, ensuring a dynamic learning experience catering to different learning styles. 4) Teachers The teachers were patient and friendly. 5) Resources Excellent and useful after the course. Cons: 1) Intensive Pace The one-month duration was challenging, especially those new to the language. The fast-paced nature of the course was sometimes overwhelming. 2) Limited Proficiency Gain Due to the short duration, I feel I only achieved a very basic level of proficiency by the end of the course. I needed a lot more time to gain deeper ability. 3) Resources Sometimes the Furigana over Kanji in photocopies was so small that it was hard to read. Overall, GenkiJACS' one-month Japanese course offered a solid foundation in Japanese. It provided a structured curriculum, immersive environment, and excellent resources which can be used after the course. The teachers were friendly and the school felt like a community. I really enjoyed my time there and have definitely improved my understanding, reading and writing of Japanese, although my ability to formulate spoken answers is still quite slow, but that's more me than the school.
Honestly the best language classes i have ever recieved
February 20, 2024by: Zakarias Thomsen - DenmarkProgram: Learn Japanese with the Best: Study Abroad in Japan
Its funny because when i came Genkijacs i expected good japanese classes from what i read online, but i didnt expect the most high quality language classes in general, i rarely experinced this during my normal school time in the past. I dont really see a reason to pick any other school than this one if its the first time you are studying in Japan. If you are new to japanese and have had this fantasy image in your head of going to Japan and speak japanese with japanese people and living there like a community because of youtube or anime etc., the teachers and school gives excatly that image and are very welcoming for newcomers and beginners. There is no reason to be nervous or the feeling of pressure or any of that. Been there 2 times and even though i havent checked out other schools out i cant see how it could be done better than this to be honest.
