A Guide to Learning English in England
Locations
Despite its small size, England influences the world in a big way, constantly innovating in the arts, business, and everything in between. With 53 million English-speaking residents, England is an ideal place to perfect your language skills, whether you’re ordering afternoon tea or trying to distinguish the difference between Scottish and Cockney accents.
Everyone knows about English courses in London, and its notoriety attracts hundreds of thousands of English learners each year. England’s capital city is a hub for fashion, commerce, and media, which means you’ll not only learn a new language, but you’ll also expand your knowledge in whatever else you’re interested in, too. After class you can appreciate art at the Tate Modern museum, enjoy the Notting Hill Carnival street festival, or take a stroll through peaceful Hyde Park.
Farther north, the city of Manchester is a great setting to master general English in England. Opportunities abound in this multicultural center, and its many students will help you to feel right at home (buying a Manchester United jersey will also help!). Get inspired by visiting Chetham’s Library, thought to be the oldest library in the English-speaking world, or take a break outdoors by visiting one of six nature reserves sprinkled throughout the city.
While London and Manchester offer access to countless learning opportunities, there are benefits in choosing to study in a smaller city. Not only can it give you a more immersive experience, but it can also be less intimidating if you don’t yet feel confident about studying English in England.
The small city of Cambridge is just north of London and is known for its university, so you’re sure to be surrounded by other studious minds. But even serious academics need to have some fun, and you can take a break at the Strawberry Fair music festival, learn how to play cricket, or browse the outdoor market stalls at Market Square.
Located along the southern coast, the city of Brighton is perfect for anyone who enjoys cool sea breezes and a healthy dose of arts and music festivals. This seaside resort town is popular with tourists and its laid-back atmosphere ensures that you’ll never study too hard. Catch a meal at the hip Gingerman restaurant or marvel at the Royal Pavilion, an Indian-styled palace built in 1823.
