The World Storyteller Project invites people to share short video stories about international exchange for a chance to win a trip to NYC and attend a summit at the UN.

<h3>What inspired you to go abroad?</h3>
<p>I was interested in understanding aspects of well-being across different cultures, specifically in cultures across Asia. Specifically, Asia has a very different approach to the psyche and mental well-being, which is also intertwined with the religions that play a major role in people's mental health and the psyche.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>
<p>I was interested in how different cultures play a role in mental well-being, and how different ways of living, such as a collectivistic lifestyle, affect an individual's perception of their own issues. To fully immerse into a polar opposite culture, stretches your mind and puts into question many aspects of what your comfort zone is and what life in a society really means.</p>

<p>From a psychological perspective, I believe I can learn the most from employing my knowledge and skills acquired through my bachelor in a different culture and explore how my knowledge can be transferred onto their culture, how it may not, and how my knowledge of psychology can be expanded via the exploration of psychology within a new culture.&nbsp;</p>

<p>I chose this program because it offered a direct, hands-on placement within a psychiatric hospital and a children's home — two environments deeply relevant to my future profession.&nbsp;</p>
<p>I was looking for something meaningful, not just a surface-level volunteering experience. The commitment to supporting vulnerable children and women, combined with the opportunity to work alongside medical professionals and learn from them first-hand, made it stand out.&nbsp;</p>
<p>I also valued the fact that the program offered a real glimpse into how mental health is approached in a completely different cultural context.</p>
<h3>What was your favorite part about India?</h3>
<p>Without question, it was the people. I personally love Indian culture and its warmth, and that was reflected in absolutely every part of my trip. From the markets and temples to the city palaces and the monkey temple, every outing was magical — but it was the human connections that made it truly special.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Spending time with Smriti and the girls at their home, visiting SAPNA in Alwar, and simply wandering through local markets with people who welcomed me so openly — these are the moments I will carry with me forever.&nbsp;</p>
<h3>What made your experience abroad extraordinary?</h3>
<p>The depth of human connection I experienced made it extraordinary.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Whether I was sitting with the girls doing homework and drawing, attending hospital conferences, or visiting SAPNA with Smriti to meet patients who had experienced significant trauma — every moment felt profound and real. The children were wonderful, and the time I spent with them exchanging knowledge, love, and laughter was unlike anything I have experienced before.&nbsp;</p>
<p>On top of that, the visit to SAPNA was genuinely life-changing — witnessing the realities of trauma and recovery in that context was humbling and deeply educational in equal measure.</p>

<h3>How did local staff support you throughout your program?</h3>
<p>The local staff were consistently present and supportive. Manmohan was always there to back me up in whatever I wanted to do, which gave me a great sense of security and confidence throughout my placement. Smriti was equally wonderful — she took me to Alwar, guided me through local experiences like visiting SAPNA, and was always open for a conversation in the evenings.&nbsp;</p>
<p>The wider team at the house was warm and organized from day one: everyone introduced themselves, made me feel welcome immediately, and ensured I always had an open ear whenever I needed it.</p>
<h3>What's one thing you wish you would have done differently during your time abroad?</h3>
<p>I wish I had prepared more activities in advance to do with the children. After a full day at the hospital, it was genuinely difficult to find the energy and creativity to plan something meaningful on the spot.&nbsp;</p>
<p>If I had been made aware that I could prepare activities before my arrival — especially non-language-dependent ones like art, sport, or movement-based sessions — I could have offered the children so much more. For example, I would have loved to have prepared structured workout sessions or even basic boxing lessons.&nbsp;</p>
<h3>Describe what a typical day in your life abroad looked like.</h3>
<p>Mornings typically started with breakfast at the house before heading to the hospital for the day.&nbsp;</p>
<p>At the hospital I attended lessons with doctors, observed in the psychiatric ward, attended conferences, and helped where I could with cases.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Evenings were spent back at the house where I ran tutoring sessions with the children, did drawing and creative activities with them, watched TV together, and had long, meaningful conversations with Smriti and the other volunteer Tash.&nbsp;</p>
<p>On weekends I explored the region — visiting sites like Amer Fort, the City Palace, and the monkey temple, as well as browsing through local markets.</p>

<h3>What did you enjoy doing during your free time abroad?</h3>
<p>I loved exploring; it is incredibly rewarding. I organized trips with the help of Smriti and Manmohan and visited places like Amer, the City Palace, and the Monkey Temple.&nbsp;</p>
<p>I also enjoyed my evenings at the house — writing in my journal, talking with the girls, and spending time with Smriti and Tash. Keeping a journal was one of the most valuable things I packed; it helped me process and record each day's experiences in a way I will be able to look back on for years to come.</p>
<h3>What type of accommodation did you have? What did you like best about it?</h3>
<p>I had my own private room and bathroom within the house, which was absolutely perfect. The food served was delicious, and the whole environment felt welcoming and comfortable from the very first day.&nbsp;</p>
<p>I liked the balance of community and privacy — I was living alongside others in a warm, social environment, but I also had my own space to decompress and reflect at the end of each day.&nbsp;</p>
<p>The house was well organized, well located, and felt like a genuine home. It was honestly one of the nicest accommodation setups I could have hoped for as a volunteer.</p>
<h3>What is one thing every future participant should know about your program before their program begins?</h3>
<p>Bring a laptop or tablet. This is essential and cannot be overstated. At the hospital you will need to prepare presentations, read literature, and take notes — doing all of this without a personal device is genuinely challenging.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Equally important: prepare activities in advance for the children, especially ones that are not language-dependent, such as art, craft, or sports. After a demanding day in the hospital, you will not have the energy to plan from scratch.&nbsp;</p>

<h3>Would you recommend <a href=https://www.goabroad.com/providers/vocational-impact-1 rel="" target="_self" class="link">Vocational Impact</a> to others? Why?</h3>
<p>Absolutely, without hesitation. This experience was among the best of my life. The organization is genuinely well-run, the accommodation is excellent, the staff are warm and supportive, and the placement opportunities are meaningful and professionally enriching. For anyone working towards a career in psychology, healthcare, or social work, this is an invaluable placement.&nbsp;</p>
<p>But honestly, I would recommend it to anyone. Any experience that is novel, that puts you slightly outside your comfort zone, and that confronts you with a reality completely different from your own is essential for personal growth.</p>
<h3>What do you feel the biggest benefit of traveling abroad is?</h3>
<p>Perspective. When you immerse yourself in a culture and a way of life that is entirely different from your own, you begin to understand hardship, joy, community, and resilience in a new and deeply personal way. You stop seeing the world only through your own lens.&nbsp;</p>
<p>For me, this trip cultivated levels of compassion and empathy that I simply could not have developed at home. That kind of understanding — earned through genuine human connection rather than textbooks — is irreplaceable. It will make me a better psychotherapist, a better person, and a more open and curious citizen of the world.</p>
<h3>Now that you're home, how has your time abroad impacted your life?</h3>

<p>It changed me. I cultivated so much compassion, empathy, and understanding during my time there that I know it will directly shape my future work as a psychotherapist.&nbsp;</p>
<p>I now have a lived understanding of situations I cannot directly relate to from my own background — I understand hardship on a new level, and that understanding creates an empathy that will be of real benefit to the clients I work with. On a personal level, I came home with a deep love for India and its people, a strong sense of confidence in my own independence, and some of the most treasured memories of my life.</p>
<h3>What does meaningful travel mean to you?</h3>
<p>Meaningful travel, to me, is travel that leaves you different from how you arrived. It is about genuine exchange. Exchanging knowledge, moments, love, and perspectives with people whose lives are different from your own. It means being fully present and being open to discomfort.&nbsp;</p>
<p>I believe that getting a perspective as significant as being immersed in the lives of people and children is irreplaceable. Any type of experience that confronts your reality and puts you outside of your comfort zone is beneficial.&nbsp;</p>
<p>My time here was meaningful because of the children I sat with, the patients I encountered, the conversations I had, and the quiet moments I wrote about in my journal. That is what I will carry home forever.</p>

<h3>What was your favorite part about Ghana?</h3>
<p>My favorite part about my host country was the warmth and sense of community I experienced every day.&nbsp;</p>
<p>In Bolgatanga, people are incredibly welcoming, and it’s easy to feel at home even when you are far away. I especially loved spending time with the local community, from interacting with colleagues at work to playing and learning with the children in the afternoons. Their joy, resilience, and positive energy were truly inspiring. I also appreciated the opportunity to immerse myself in a different culture, discovering local traditions, food, and ways of life that differ greatly from my own.&nbsp;</p>
<p>The slower pace of life and the strong sense of connection between people made me reflect on what truly matters. It was an experience that not only allowed me to explore a new place, but also to grow personally and see the world from a new perspective.</p>

<h3>What's one thing you wish you would have done differently during your time abroad?</h3>
<p>One thing I wish I would have done differently during my time abroad is to engage even more deeply with the local community outside of my scheduled activities. While I already spent meaningful time with the children and participated actively in my internship, I sometimes feel I could have taken more initiative to explore additional opportunities to learn from local people, their traditions, and everyday life.<br><br>I would have liked to ask more questions, participate in more community events, and spend extra time simply observing and understanding how people live and interact in their environment. I believe this would have helped me gain an even deeper cultural understanding and made the experience even more enriching. However, I still feel very grateful for everything I experienced and learned during my time abroad.</p>

<p>A typical day abroad in Sogakope and Accra started with a simple morning routine, followed by heading to my internship activities. During the day, I worked closely with the team at Future4Africa, where I was involved in tasks related to fundraising and partnerships, such as supporting ideas for campaigns, assisting with communication materials, and learning how nonprofit projects are managed behind the scenes.<br><br>After the morning and early afternoon work, I often had time to visit or spend moments with the local community. One of the most meaningful parts of the day was interacting with the children playing with them, talking, and simply sharing time together. These moments were always full of energy, joy, and connection.<br><br>In the evenings, I usually reflected on the day, spent time with other volunteers or staff, and prepared for the next day. Overall, each day was a balance of learning, contributing, and experiencing a new culture, which made the routine both meaningful and fulfilling.</p>

<p>During my free time abroad, I enjoyed spending time with the local community and other interns, as these moments were always very meaningful and relaxed. Life and work in a different cultural and community context can be very different from what you are used to, but that is part of what makes the experience so valuable. <p>Now that I am home, my time abroad has had a very strong and lasting impact on my life. It has completely changed the way I see the world, making me more open-minded, adaptable, and aware of different realities beyond my own environment. Living and working in Bolgatanga helped me understand the importance of community, resilience, and human connection in a much deeper way.</p>
<p>Professionally, the experience gave me practical skills and confidence, especially in areas like teamwork, communication, and contributing to meaningful projects such as fundraising and community support.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Personally, it helped me grow more independent and reflective, and I now approach challenges with a more positive and solution-oriented mindset.</p>
<p>Overall, I feel the experience has shaped both my personal values and my future goals. It has motivated me to continue working in impactful environments and to stay connected to international and community-focused projects.</p>
<h3>What does meaningful travel mean to you?</h3>
<p>Meaningful travel, to me, is about going beyond tourism and truly engaging with the people, culture, and purpose of a place. It is not just about visiting new destinations but about creating genuine connections and contributing positively to the community you are part of, even if only for a short time.</p>
<p>It also means being open to learning, listening, and adapting. Meaningful travel challenges your perspectives and helps you grow as a person by exposing you to different ways of life and different realities. For me, it is about combining personal growth with impact whether through volunteering, internships, or cultural exchange so that both the traveler and the host community benefit from the experience.</p>
<p>Ultimately, meaningful travel is about leaving a place with more than just memories, but also with lessons, relationships, and a deeper understanding of the world and your role in it.</p>

<h3>What inspired you to go abroad?</h3>
<p>Studying abroad had always been something I wanted to experience because I believe the best way to grow creatively and personally is to step outside your comfort zone.&nbsp;</p>
<p>As a Communication and Advertising student from Honduras, I was curious to see how creative industries and work environments operate in other parts of the world.&nbsp;</p>
<p>I also wanted to challenge myself by living independently in a new country, meeting people from different cultures, and gaining real professional experience while learning how to adapt to a completely new environment.</p>

<p>What attracted me most was the possibility of combining creative work with an international environment. As someone interested in marketing, media, and visual communication, I felt that working in a professional setting in the UK would be an incredible opportunity to learn how teams collaborate, how brands communicate with audiences, and how creative ideas are executed in a fast-paced workplace.</p>
<h3>What was your favorite part about the UK?</h3>
<p>One of my favorite things about living in the UK was how diverse and dynamic everything felt.</p>
<p>Being able to explore different cities, cultures, and creative spaces was incredibly inspiring. I loved how history and modern life coexist everywhere—from historic architecture to contemporary art, design, and media.&nbsp;</p>
<p>At the same time, the cultural diversity meant constantly meeting people with different perspectives, which made everyday conversations and experiences really enriching.</p>
<h3>What made your experience abroad extraordinary?</h3>
<p>What made my experience extraordinary was the combination of personal independence and professional growth.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Moving abroad pushed me to adapt quickly, communicate with new people, and navigate challenges on my own. At the same time, being able to work in a creative role allowed me to apply what I’ve studied at university in a real environment.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Every project, collaboration, and even small daily interaction helped me gain confidence and see my field from a more global perspective.</p>

<p>The local staff were very supportive throughout the program and always available whenever I had questions or needed guidance. They helped make the transition smoother by checking in regularly and making sure everything related to the internship and living situation was going well.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Knowing there was a support system in place made it much easier to adjust to a new country and focus on making the most out of the experience.</p>
<h3>What's one thing you wish you had done differently during your time abroad?</h3>
<p>One thing I wish I had done differently is traveling even more whenever I had the chance.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Living abroad can sometimes make you fall into a routine, and it’s easy to forget how many places are nearby to explore. Although I traveled and experienced many things, looking back, I realize there were even more opportunities to discover new cities, meet new people, and fully take advantage of being in such a unique international setting.</p>
<h3>Describe what a typical day in your life abroad looked like.</h3>
<p>A typical day usually started with commuting to work, which quickly became part of the experience of living in the UK. During the day, I worked on marketing and communications tasks, including content creation, photography, and support for social media projects. Every day was a bit different depending on the projects we were working on.&nbsp;</p>
<p>After work, I would often explore the city, meet up with friends, or simply enjoy experiencing daily life in a new culture.</p>
<h3>What did you enjoy doing during your free time abroad?</h3>

<p>During my free time, I loved exploring new places, trying different restaurants, and discovering creative spaces like galleries, cafés, and shops. I also enjoyed walking around different neighborhoods and cities because every place had its own character and atmosphere.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Traveling to nearby cities when possible was also one of my favorite parts of the experience, since it allowed me to see more of the country and experience different cultures within the UK.</p>
<h3>What type of accommodation did you have? What did you like best about it?</h3>
<p>I stayed in a student accommodation named Ashwell House, which turned out to be a great experience because it allowed me to meet people from different backgrounds. Living with others who were also working or studying abroad created a sense of community, and we often shared experiences about adjusting to life in a new country.&nbsp;</p>
<p>What I liked most was having a comfortable and welcoming place to come back to after work while still feeling independent.</p>
<h3>What is one thing every future participant should know about your program before their program begins?</h3>
<p>One important thing future participants should know is to arrive with an open mind and be ready to step outside of their comfort zone.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Living and working abroad can be challenging at times, but those challenges are also what make the experience so rewarding. Being proactive, curious, and willing to connect with people will help you make the most of the opportunity both personally and professionally.</p>
<h3>Would you recommend Creative Internships in London to others? Why?</h3>
<p>Yes, I would definitely recommend this program to others because it offers a valuable opportunity to gain international experience and develop professional skills. It allows participants to immerse themselves in a new culture while also learning how to navigate a professional environment abroad.&nbsp;</p>
<p>The combination of cultural exposure and career development makes it a truly meaningful and impactful experience.</p>

<p>This not only helps you grow personally but also professionally, especially in creative and communication fields where understanding diverse audiences is incredibly valuable.</p>
<h3>Now that you're home, how has your time abroad impacted your life?</h3>
<p>My time abroad helped me become more confident, adaptable, and independent. It taught me how to navigate unfamiliar situations and communicate with people from many different backgrounds.</p>
<p>Professionally, it also gave me valuable experience working in an international environment. Overall, it broadened my perspective and motivated me to continue seeking opportunities to grow both creatively and personally.</p>
<h3>What does meaningful travel mean to you?</h3>
<p>Meaningful travel, to me, goes beyond simply visiting a new place. It means truly engaging with the culture, the people, and the everyday life of the destination. It’s about learning from the environment, gaining new perspectives, and growing as a person through those experiences.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Coming from a migrant background, I have always lived between two realities. Studying abroad felt like a way to connect those experiences to a broader global perspective and to challenge the limits I once thought I had.&nbsp;</p>

<h3>What was your favorite part about Prague?</h3>
<p>My favorite part of Prague was how history and modern life coexist so naturally.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Walking through the city felt like stepping into a story shaped by politics, resilience, and transformation. Every building and public space carried meaning, reminding me how deeply history influences present-day systems and identities.&nbsp;</p>
<h3>What made your experience abroad extraordinary?</h3>
<p>What made my experience extraordinary was the opportunity to see how policy is not just theory, but something that directly impacts people's opportunities.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Working on research about school funding and social disadvantage made everything feel real; I wasn't just learning, I was contributing.&nbsp;</p>
<p>But beyond that, it was the life I built outside of work. Traveling across different countries, embracing the adventure of backpacking, and allowing myself to explore freely shaped me in unexpected ways. Through dance, I found connection and familiarity even far from home.&nbsp;</p>
<p>That balance between discipline and freedom made the experience unforgettable.&nbsp;</p>
<h3>How did local staff support you throughout your program?</h3>
<p>The local staff was incredibly supportive both academically and personally.&nbsp;</p>
<p>They guided me through complex research topics, encouraged my ideas, and made space for me to ask questions. Their openness made me feel included, not just as a student, but as someone whose perspective mattered.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Honestly, everyone was wonderful.</p>
<h3>What's one thing you wish you would have done differently during your time abroad?</h3>
<p>I wish I had allowed myself to be more present instead of feeling the pressure to do everything perfectly.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Sometimes I focused too much on making the most out of every moment, instead of simply living it. The experience taught me that growth also comes from slowing down. Not all is just the job, sometimes we need to explore.</p>
<h3>Describe what a typical day in your life abroad looked like.</h3>
<p>A typical day involved commuting into the city and working at the Ministry of Education on research related to school funding and inequality. I spent my days analyzing data, discussing policy, and learning from professionals in the field.&nbsp;</p>
<p>After work, I would explore the city, explore more coffee shops, go to the gym, reflect, or spend time dancing or connecting with others.&nbsp;</p>
<h3>What did you enjoy doing during your free time abroad?</h3>

<p>During my free time, I embraced exploration. I traveled to different countries, often on my own, learning how to navigate new places with confidence. The experience of being a backpacker taught me independence and resilience.&nbsp;</p>
<p>I also balanced moments of rest, sometimes working remotely while still immersed in new environments. And through it all, I connected with people, sharing conversation, cultures, and experiences.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Even when I was alone, I never truly felt alone.&nbsp;</p>
<h3>What type of accommodation did you have? What did you like best about it?</h3>
<p>I stayed in student housing, which allowed me to live independently while still being surrounded by people from different backgrounds. What I liked most was that balance gave me space to grow on my own while also creating opportunities to connect with others. But above all, it was the location: everything was very close, and the area was very pleasant and safe.</p>
<h3>What is one thing every future participant should know about your program before their program begins?</h3>
<p>Future participants should know that this program truly requires initiative. It’s not just about attending sessions or completing tasks—it’s about how willing you are to engage, ask questions, and step into spaces that might feel unfamiliar at first. No one is going to hold your hand through the experience, and that’s actually part of its value.<br><br>You have to be curious enough to go beyond what is assigned, confident enough to speak up even when you’re unsure, and open enough to learn not only from the program but from the people and environment around you. Some of the most meaningful moments don’t come from structured activities but from conversations, observations, and the effort you put into being present.</p>
<h3>Would you recommend the Professionals Program to others? Why?</h3>
<p>Yes, I would recommend this program, especially to students who are genuinely curious and willing to step outside their comfort zone. What makes it valuable is not just the opportunity to travel, but the chance to engage with real-world issues.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Working with the Ministry of Education in Prague allowed me to see how policy functions in practice, beyond theory. At the same time, the experience goes beyond academics. It pushes you to become more independent, to navigate unfamiliar environments, and to build connections with people from different backgrounds.&nbsp;</p>
<p>It’s not always easy, and it requires effort, but that’s exactly why it’s worth it. You don’t just come back with memories; you come back with perspective, confidence, and a clearer sense of direction.</p>
<h3>What do you feel the biggest benefit of traveling abroad is?</h3>

<p>For me, the biggest benefit of traveling abroad is stepping outside of my comfort zone and growing through it. Being in unfamiliar places pushes you to adapt, to trust yourself, and to become more independent. It’s in those moments of uncertainty that you realize how capable you really are.</p>
<p>But also, there’s something powerful about finally standing in places you once only saw in photos. What once felt distant or unreachable suddenly becomes real, and that changes the way you see the world and your place in it.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Traveling opens your mind, but it also grounds you. It reminds you that the world is bigger than you imagined, yet somehow closer than you ever thought.</p>
<h3>Now that you're home, how has your time abroad impacted your life?</h3>
<p>Now that I’m home, I notice the change in small, everyday things. I’m more comfortable being on my own, making decisions without overthinking, and stepping into unfamiliar situations with less fear. Things that once felt intimidating now feel possible.&nbsp;</p>
<p>It also shifted how I see my goals. Being in Prague, working and traveling at the same time, made me realize that the life I want isn’t something distant; it’s something I can build. I don’t see opportunities as out of reach anymore.</p>
<p>More than anything, I came back with a stronger sense of direction. Not everything is figured out, but I trust myself more, and that changes everything.</p>
<h3>What does meaningful travel mean to you?</h3>
<p>Meaningful travel, to me, is when a place stops feeling like a destination and starts feeling real. It’s ordering food in a language you’re still learning, getting lost and figuring it out, and moving from place to place with just a backpack, learning to trust yourself along the way.</p>
<p>It’s not about doing everything or seeing the most popular spots. It’s about the small things: conversations that weren’t planned, the routines you build even if they’re temporary, and the moments where you feel both out of place and completely present.</p>
<p>Traveling like that, a little uncertain but open, taught me more than any plan ever could. That’s when it becomes meaningful, when it stays with you in quiet, unexpected ways.</p>

<h3>What inspired you to go abroad?</h3>

<p>What inspired me to go abroad was all of the different opportunities that my university provides. I believe that spending a semester abroad can be an important milestone in someone's development, so if one has the chance, one should do it.&nbsp;</p>
<p>I visited the study abroad fair at my university, Brandeis, and I decided that it was an opportunity that would be wasted if I did not take it.</p>
<p>I was also inspired by some of my professors who were involved in study abroad programs, as well as some of my friends and classmates who had gone on study abroad trips before me. Though none would go to Greece like me, they did speak about how beneficial Study Abroad was for them, so I thought it would be good for me as well.&nbsp;</p>
<h3>Why did you choose <a href=https://www.goabroad.com/providers/college-year-in-athens rel="" target="_self" class="link">College Year in Athens</a>?</h3>
<p>I chose this specific <a href=https://www.goabroad.com/providers/college-year-in-athens/programs/study-greece-semester-academic-year-42925 rel="" target="_self" class="link">program</a> because I have always wanted to visit Greece. I have been very interested in studying Ancient Greece and Rome, and I knew that coming to the Mediterranean region would be beneficial for that purpose.&nbsp;</p>
<p>At the study abroad fair, then, CYA immediately stood out to me as one of the foremost options for study abroad, both from speaking to the representative, and from looking at the advertising material.&nbsp;</p>
<p>The more research I did into CYA, the more appealing it looked to me. The living arrangements intrigued me, many of the classes that CYA offers looked immensely interesting, and when I began enrolling, the aid that was provided to me convinced me how helpful this would be.&nbsp;</p>
<h3>What was your favorite part about Greece?</h3>
<p>My favorite part was the clearly deep heritage and historical legacy present in both Greece in general, and Athens in particular.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Much of Athens clearly had a long history behind it, and I really found it fun. Many of my classes took place in either museums or archaeological sites where we were surrounded by the history of Athens.&nbsp;</p>
<p>I also attended a lot of cultural celebrations, such as Carnival, and I really liked that I was so involved in learning about Greek cultural and traditional activities.&nbsp;</p>

<h3>What made your experience abroad extraordinary?</h3>
<p>What made my experience truly extraordinary was how much closer I was able to get to the things I was learning about.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Many of my classes were held at ancient sites or in museums, where I got to directly access the things we were discussing. Even when I was in the classroom, the fact we were in a region of the world where much of what I was learning about had happened made it far more engaging for me.&nbsp;</p>
<p>For one example, I was learning about current events in the region in one of my classes, and we were getting regular news updates that were changing our professors plans for class. This proximity made all of my classes in this program more engaging than my classes back in America.</p>
<h3>How did local staff support you throughout your program?</h3>
<p>The staff and professors of this program were unbelievably helpful to me in a variety of ways. After important projects, I was promptly given feedback about what I did well and how I could have improved my work.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Another thing they did was have very interactive lessons, filled with discussions, and often presentations where we were able to demonstrate our knowledge. Sometimes, we even went to museums and ancient sites all over Athens, and that made lessons extremely memorable for me.&nbsp;</p>
<p>More then that, however, was the clear impression I got from all of my professors was that they really wanted me to succeed. All of my classes were relatively small, and I got to know my professors, and all of them personally seemed to want all of us to succeed, and were eager to help us.&nbsp;</p>
<p>They were open and willing to discuss whatever was giving us trouble in class, and taught in a way that made learning enjoyable.&nbsp;</p>
<h3>What's one thing you wish you would have done differently during your time abroad?</h3>
<p>One thing that I would have done differently was that I would have taken advantage of the program's location in Europe to travel more frequently. Many of my friends and fellow participants in the program took trips with groups of friends to other countries in Europe.&nbsp;</p>
<p>One of my friends regularly travelled to Amsterdam to meet friends who were studying in a different program. Some other friends went to the UK, Spain, or Malta. Overall, though I did occasionally take advantage of free weekends to travel, I feel I should have done it more often.&nbsp;</p>
<h3>Describe what a typical day in your life abroad looked like.</h3>
<p>A typical weekday involved me waking up, between 7:30 and 8:00 am, and eating breakfast, either at my apartment or on my way to class. I would then spend the morning at class. This would go until 10:30 on Mondays and Wednesdays, and 12:30 on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Usually these classes were at the CYA building, but occasionally, I would have a lesson elsewhere in Athens.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Afterwards was lunch, which I would have at CYA, as lunch is always provided. Afterwards, I would have my afternoon classes, which were always done around 3:30. For the remainder of the day I would have free time, which I would spend doing homework, practicing Greek, reading, and doing chores around the apartment.&nbsp;</p>
<p>I would usually have dinner, either at my apartment or out, at around 8-9. I would get ready for bed afterwards, and I would try to be in bed by 1:00.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Weekends were more varied. I didn't have a set wake up time, so I had a lot of variance with when my day would begin. Usually, Saturday I would try to do sightseeing, while Sunday was the day that I would do all of my projects and other homework I had over the weekend.&nbsp;</p>
<h3>What did you enjoy doing during your free time abroad?</h3>

<p>In my free time, my favorite thing to do was sightsee, whether in Athens or many of the other places I visited as part of the program. I am unsure of any time that I will be in Greece in the future, so I felt I had to make the most of my time.&nbsp;</p>
<p>I had many things, such as the Acropolis and the Agora, which I had always wanted to see. I also got to see things that I had not previously known about, such as the ruins on the island of Aegina, the National Archaeological Museum, or the Athens War Museum. CYA helped me do this, by helping me take trips to Olympia, Delphi, Thessaloniki, and many other sites, places that I probably would not have visited otherwise.&nbsp;</p>
<p>At other times, I liked going out and spending time with friends. Often, friends would gather at my apartment to spend time with each other, and we would sometimes spend time at the local bars or nightclubs, but this was a relatively rare choice.&nbsp;</p>
<p>On my own, I read, and sometimes played video games, but those are things that I do at home, and I preferred the exploring that came with being in Greece.</p>
<h3>What type of accommodation did you have? What did you like best about it?</h3>
<p>For my accommodation in the program, CYA had apartments in the Pangrati neighborhood of Athens that I stayed in. These accommodations were very nice. Ultimately, my favorite part of my apartment was the neighborhood.&nbsp;</p>
<p>The apartment was well situated in a neighborhood that had a lot of excellent things close to home. It was across the street from a nice bakery I regularly got breakfast at, down the street there was a nice bookstore and some parks, there were several convenience stores and a well-stocked grocery store very close, and the restaurants in the immediate proximity were all excellent.&nbsp;</p>
<p>The laundry facilities and my classes were almost always a quick walk away, and public transit was close at hand. The apartment itself was comfortable, and had everything I wanted an apartment to have, but the best part was the neighborhood.</p>
<h3>What is one thing every future participant should know about your program before their program begins?</h3>
<p>I would say that the one thing every future participant in CYA should keep in mind is that it gets very easy to neglect your schoolwork. There were multiple times over the course of the semester that my time in Greece distracted me from my studies.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Occasionally, I went out with friends when it probably would have been wiser to work on my Greek, or when I had projects due and I didn't know if I had enough time. This negligence cost me, and later in the school year I had to deal with a large amount of stress, which I would have probably preferred to avoid.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Making sure to work hard even when the distractions of studying abroad happening will help you have a far more enjoyable time in the long run.</p>
<h3>Would you recommend Study Abroad in Greece with CYA to others? Why?</h3>
<p>I would wholeheartedly recommend CYA's Study Abroad program to others. This is because Athens is a great place to study, especially if one's interest is in history, classical studies, or the ancient world.&nbsp;</p>
<p>This program offers many unique classes with teachers utterly dedicated to the success of their students. The program also provided an expansive and supportive community, with many opportunities for the cultivation of friendships that last a lifetime. The program granted us the ability to travel throughout Europe, and experience many new cultures.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Overall, I believe that CYA's Study Abroad program is a well organized and run study abroad program, which should be considered a success.&nbsp;</p>
<h3>What do you feel the biggest benefit of traveling abroad is?</h3>
<p>The biggest benefit of traveling abroad is the opportunity to meet different cultures and people. I think one of the main problems in the world is that people don't have enough understanding of the ways other people live.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Traveling is one of the most reliable ways to cure that ignorance. When an individual is traveling to another place, especially when they are open-minded and eager to learn, they are more able to connect with the inhabitants of that place.&nbsp;</p>
<p>This is important because we live in a more interconnected world, and these sorts of understandings are necessary to foster greater friendships between the different people of the world.</p>

<h3>Now that you're home, how has your time abroad impacted your life?</h3>
<p>Now that I am at home, I recognize that my time abroad impacted my life in a lot of different ways. One was that I was able to go on a lot more trips alone. I have travelled alone before, especially when flying between my home in the Chicago area and Brandeis, in the Boston area.&nbsp;</p>
<p>However, that was simple back-and-forth travel between two places, both of which I was familiar with. This was different, I could get my own plane ticket and find my own place to stay, and that is something I haven't had a lot of experience doing before. I could also make my own plans for traveling with friends, and going on vacations with my friends is something that I have only rarely done.</p>
<p>Another way it has affected me is that I became more invested in international geopolitics. Before, I was very attentive to foreign affairs, but I was in America, and we have historically been somewhat insulated from international affairs. In Greece, I was significantly closer to ongoing geopolitical conflicts in both Ukraine and the Middle East, some of which were discussed in class.</p>
<p>This, naturally, was far more concerning to me than usual information about geopolitics, but as a result, I was far more attentive.&nbsp;</p>
<h3>What does meaningful travel mean to you?</h3>
<p>What I consider to be meaningful travel is travel that I have learned from. I believe that one should always take efforts to improve yourself, especially by learning new things, even when one is enjoying themselves.&nbsp;</p>
<p>As such, I try to make sure that when I take vacations, they should be meaningful travel. I tried to make many of the trips I took during this vacation meaningful. The special trips directed by the CYA program guides were very good at making meaningful trips for us, where we learned a lot of new things about the country and communities which were hosting us.&nbsp;</p>
<p>By learning from the people and places we met, we can become more responsible members of the international community.&nbsp;</p>
