High School Study Abroad in Galapagos Islands, Ecuador

Adventure Travel and ecotourism are both especially popular forms of high school programs in the Galapagos Islands. Students will be able to learn all about environmental and wildlife preservation while also having the opportunity to interact closely with animals and partake in a wide range of fun activities. This type of high school program often incorporates volunteer opportunities across a variety of community service projects. Many of the islands’ inhabitants lack access to basic resources, so students can leave behind a positive impact on both the environmental and the local people by lending a helping hand.

Language Immersion is another common type of high school program in the Galapagos Islands. As a territory of Ecuador, Spanish is the most common language spoken throughout the Galapagos, making it a fun and enriching destination for students to take their Spanish fluency to the next level. Generally, Spanish language programs consist of morning and/or afternoon classes every weekday, with plenty of fun extracurricular activities thrown in to sweeten the pot.

Many high school programs in the Galapagos Islands will include additional travel to several other places in Ecuador, including the Andes Mountains and Amazon Rainforest. The trip started of amazing, as I went on it got even better with us going all across Ecuador learning the culture and eating different foods. The favourite highlight from the trip was especially the butterfly farm and being able to have that experience of being surrounded by such beautiful butterflies.

Trip of a lifetime

I went on Projects Abroad’s High School Special on the Galápagos Islands in March 2020. It was a trip of a lifetime. I went with a group of friends but you could easily do it alone. Even before we got to the Galapagos Holly Hubble from Projects Abroad flew all the way with us. It made the whole journey so much easier and fun, even with the problems with our flights. For the first week on San Cristobal we helped out in one of Project Galápagos summer camps and fixed up a playground in a local school. On the weekend we went to Santa Cruz to see the tortoises and Tortuga Bay. The 2nd week was Conservation Work so we would do sea lion monitoring at sunrise, then after breakfast, feed the tortoises and control the invasive plants or do a beach clean up. After lunch we had sea lion or bird monitoring. On our last day we got a 360 tour on a boat around the island. We got to go fishing, swimming and snorkeling with sea lions, turtles, loads of tropical fish and even sharks. The food at our accommodation was nice having rice in every meal. The staff in both Projects Abroad and Project Galápagos were so friendly and helpful with everything. I do definitely do it again
