A Guide to Adventure Travel in the Dominican Republic
Locations
The Dominican Republic rests on the eastern two-thirds of Hispanola, the second largest island in the Caribbean Sea (the western third of the island constitutes Haiti). Roughly 10.4 million people live in the Dominican Republic, which is also home to an immense biodiversity of indigenous plant and wildlife species. Amidst the varied geography that you might explore during adventure travel in the Dominican Republic are both the Caribbean Sea’s tallest mountain, Pico Duarte, and largest lake, Lake Enriquillo.
The country’s capital and most populous city, Santo Domingo, is the most popularly visited urban area during adventure travel in the Dominican Republic. With some 3 million people living in the metropolitan area, Santo Domingo is the largest city in the entire Caribbean region, and a major regional hub of culture, politics, and commerce. Sitting at the mouth of the Ozama River with impressive coastal views abound, Santo Domingo locals further enjoy a warm, balmy climate throughout the year.
Other destinations you might visit during your adventure travel in the Dominican Republic include Santiago, Jarabacoa, and Punta Cana, among a wide array of other rural areas that you may stop through. There are many different adventure travel programs in the Dominican Republic which will have unique itineraries, so do your research thoroughly while deciding which can provide the experience you’re most looking forward to!
Adventure Travel Programs
The Dominican Republic is an island nation with a dramatic inland geography, meaning that you can expect to engage in any number of both aquatic and terrestrial activities during your adventure travel abroad. Backpacking, horseback riding, and nature tours are all popular inland activates for example, while in the coastal areas kayaking, scuba diving, and sailing can be equally as thrilling.
Many adventure travel programs in the Dominican Republic also feature a core principle of eco-tourism, which gives international participants the opportunity to help with environmental conservation throughout the course of their journey. Volunteering on any number of community projects while also learning about the diverse ecosystems within the Dominican Republic can add a positive, educational aspect to our experience.
Adventure travel programs in the Dominican Republic can last anywhere from just one week to multiple months, and many organizations will further allow you to select from a few different itineraries based on your availability. The Dominican Republic is within a tropical climate zone, with balmy temperatures year-round and a rainy season usually lasting from May to November. Be sure to take factors such as these into account while researching all the potential programs and planning your trip!
Costs & Affordability
While the Dominican Republic is an affordable country for most travelers coming from the industrialized world, upfront program fees for any adventure travel program can be fairly expensive. The good news is that most of your on-the-ground costs such as housing, meals, and transportation will be covered by these fees, so you won’t be spending much while you’re abroad. The local currency in the Dominican Republic is the Dominican peso, which exchanges at roughly 45 DOP to $1 USD.
Accommodation & Visas
Adventure travel programs in the Dominican Republic tend to move around frequently between locations, meaning that you will likely make use of a variety of housing situations throughout the course of your trip. Hotels, inns, campsites, and even beach resorts are all examples of potential accommodations that you might enjoy while you adventure travel in the Dominican Republic.
The Dominican Republic has a fairly relaxed visa policy, and for citizens of many countries around the globe it will be possible to obtain a tourist card upon arrival. For more information regarding the Dominican Republic’s visa policy toward your home nation, check out our Embassy Directory.

Life changing
February 16, 2020by: Anna Vanderbiest - United StatesProgram: Pico Duarte: Trek for Clean Water
I was invited on this missionary trip by a fellow coach. It was a total of 16 coaches who embarked on this journey. We had an idea it would be hard, but I don’t think any of us fully knew what we were getting into. From the first zoom calls, to arriving in DR, setting up at base camp, hiking, everything we were fully informed of what to expect and we were in for an amazing journey. We completed the climb in 2 days, first time this was ever done. I don’t think I would have been able to achieve this climb without the unrelenting support from Chiqui, the guides, the mules and the 15 other female coaches who were with me. We all supported and motivated each other. Going to the village on Monday was a very emotional day. Being able to actually hear and see the difference in this communities life was so heartwarming. I loved the daily reflections we shared, the slumber parties, the blessings of the food before enjoying a meal, I loved and embraced every moment of this experience and can not wait to bring my husband next year to participate in the actual building of a Latrine in a community. Thank you Blue Missions for doing what you do and planting the seed of serving others. I will continue to spread your message and share my journey, in hopes of inspiring others to get involved and serve. This trip was absolutely life changing and filled my cup in every possible way.

Pico Duarte 2016
October 02, 2017by: Alejandra Sanchez - United StatesProgram: Pico Duarte: Trek for Clean Water
Hiking Pico Duarte with BLUE Missions was one the most incredible and rewarding things I have ever experienced. The trip was spent among great friends, with beautiful views and inspiring meditations. The trip was equal parts challenging and fun with a lot of moments for self-reflection and meditation. 10/10 recommend for anyone looking for an inspiring experience made better by great company and a great purpose.
Two thumbs up
September 27, 2017by: Anonymous - United StatesProgram: Pico Duarte: Trek for Clean Water
The trek is a lot of fun and an awesome challenge. The views are amazing and nothing beats the feeling of getting to the very top! The food was the best surprise - initially thinking it couldn't possibly be that good or filling. It was both. Still, make sure to pack snacks for yourself. Overall it is a great experience to do with friends as well as to meet new people on a fun adventure.
Pico Duarte trek for the win
September 27, 2017by: bluefan - United StatesProgram: Pico Duarte: Trek for Clean Water
I've always considered myself to be an adventurous person and this experience was one for the books. The trek is a physical and mental challenge that is extremely rewarding when you reach the summit. There's so much to celebrate at the summit but my favorite one would be the amount of money I fundraised to bring clean water and sanitation to more communities through out the Dominican Republic. I was amazed at what you discover about yourself while hiking 42.2 KM over the course of three days. The mountains have a way of bringing me back to a humble, live in the moment state of mind. Definitely recommend this trek.

Public health in the Caribbean ; an amazing experience!
June 29, 2017by: JM - United StatesI recently returned from the 16 day trip to the Dominican Republic called Introduction to Public Health in the Caribbean with Rustic Pathways. Even before I set out for the trip, I felt welcomed and cared for by Rustic Pathways staff. They consistently sent out emails and mail to keep me informed and excited about my upcoming trip. Additionally, they were very easy to get into contact with and to answer any questions. This continued throughout the whole trip. My program leaders were absolutely amazing. All three of them were not only kind, funny, smart, and welcoming people, but they were all very experienced leaders and had strong backgrounds in both Spanish and public health, making them the ideal leaders for the program! Their enthusiasm and passion for public health was clearly evident throughout the trip, and had a major impact on me. The beginning of the trip was spent visiting local hospitals, clinics, and NGOs in the Santo Domingo area. These visits were very informative and were a great way to kick off the program. We learned a lot about maternal health and the overall healthcare situation in the country through these visits, and this information we would then take with us throughout the rest of he trip. We then went to our base camp in San Pedro which was a beautiful house about 30 minutes away from where we would be doing all of our community service. Working with leaders living in this part of the Dominican Republic, we went into several different bateys to complete our 30 hours of community service. In the primary batey we were doing community service in, we helped build two latrines and a few cement cement floors. Both children and adults alike from the bateys came out and helped over the three days were we working there. The locals were extremely friendly and inviting and seemed genuinely happy that we were there. As a Spanish learner, it was also a great immersion oppurtunity. Perhaps my favorite part of the community service period was the kids' clinic and camp we put on over the course of two days. As a group, we went into four different bateys over those two days. Half of the day we would spend doing a clinic type activity. We set up several tables and divided ourselves up into small groups. Children and their parent(s) would then come through each station we had set up, and receive vitamins and antiparisite medications, in addition to being weighed and measured if they were under five years old. The other half of the day was spent putting on games for children ages 3-9. We got to come up with a variety of games and activities surrounding the idea of health that we would then play with the local children. These two days felt incredibly hands on and also felt incredibly applicable to what we had learned about during our Wildreness First Aid training and our visits to healthcare orginizations. Outside of learning and service, the trip was also super fun! Trips to the market, time spent in the base camp's pool, and endless group games meant that we were able to catch breaks from our busy days of learning and service just to relax and have fun. Additionally, there was a beach afternoon at an amazing beach following our wilderness first aid training, which was a great oppurtunity to relax before starting our community service. The last few days of the trip were amazing as well. We took a ferry ride to Samaná and stayed in a really nice hostel for the last two nights, and spent one day hiking to la cascada del limón, and the other day at another amazing beach, both of which were a great way to close up the trip! I would absolutely recommend this trip to anyone who loves medicine, learning, service, Spanish (though you definitely don't need to speak it to go on the trip), and anyone thinking about pursuing a career in the medical field. I am super happy I did this program!
