A Guide to Adventure Travel in Brazil
Locations
In addition to the mysterious and hugely-popular Amazon, Brazil is buzzing with adrenaline-filling adventures around every corner. From mountaintops to deep ocean plunges (and everything in between), your heart will beat rapidly at new altitudes.
In the north of Brazil is the world’s largest rainforest and one of the most biodiverse regions on the planet, the Amazon. From gigantic, rushing rivers to towering trees that seem as if they’re straight from the set of Jurassic Park, the Amazon rainforest should be on every adventure traveler’s bucket list. As one of the most popular places in the world to travel to, there are many different types of adventures in the Amazon for you to choose from. Most organizations offer very customizable itineraries, so adventurers can decide the ratio between swimming with river dolphins and marching on survival quests through the rainforest.
One of the most well known-cities in Brazil, Rio de Janeiro is a metropolis full of famous beaches (can anyone say Copacabana?), renowned soccer stadiums, and the Christ the Redeemer statue. Whether it’s surfing or coaching kids sports, Rio has a lot of adventure opportunities for travelers who are looking to get into the Carioca culture while enjoying a big city. Did we forget to mention the 2016 Rio Olympics!?
Unique from the rest of the country in the fact that it was largely colonized by Germans and emulates a lot of northern European architecture, southern Brazil’s main highlight is the city of Florianopolis. Usually, foreigners coming to Florianopolis work on projects concerning environmental conservation and community youth development. But there are also some epic canyons and waterfalls to hike through, and the scenic Serra Verde train to hop onto.
Adventure Programs in Brazil
Given Brazil’s importance in conserving the Amazon rainforest, a lot of adventure travel programs have a strong eco aspect to them. However, if you just wanna have fun in the sun, there's plenty of trekking, scuba diving, and water-based trips available as well, no worries.
Trekking & Survival Adventures. Largely based in the Amazon, a lot of trekking trips start out from Manaus, the capital of the Amazon, and last from a couple days to several weeks. These build up survival skills, such as fishing for piranhas, starting fires with local fuel, and finding clean drinking water. Needless to say, most of these adventures are not for the faint of heart.
Conservation Projects. From the rainforest to coral reef protection, Brazil has hundreds of opportunities to learn about and help conserve its fragile nature. Whether it’s wetland conservation or education of locals on how to best protect wildlife in Florianopolis, there is a branch of environmental conservation just for you. Combine adventure with a good cause, and sow the seeds for a hopeful future.
Sports. With a dedicated fan base and energetic team players, sport programs in Brazil are common. From fútebol matches to capoeira performances, sports are a huge part of Brazilian culture. Adventure travelers can even find volunteering opportunities, from Rio de Janeiro to Fortaleza, related to sports. Since sports are not usually taught as a part of the Brazilian curriculum at schools, a lot of disadvantaged youth can use sports coaching to build life skills, such as teamwork and sportsmanship.
Costs & Affordability
The cost of adventures in Brazil largely depends on the length, location, and activities included in the trip. The main two ports of entry to the country are Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo, so the farther you go from those two cities, the more expensive it will be in terms of travel costs. However, there are always deals on flights and buses, so keep a lookout for bargains!
Affordability varies around Brazil, but never breaks the bank. Eating out at restaurants and churrascarias (steak houses) is between $5 and $15, while upper-end restaurants are closer to $40. Stick to the numerous grocery stores and mercados, which not only prove to be cheaper and fresher, but also offer many quirky local foods not found on commercial menus.
As far as prepping for a trek goes, the farther away from cities supply shops are, the more expensive the gear gets (for example, insect repellent and backpacks will be far more expensive in Manaus than in Sao Paulo or Rio de Janeiro). Transportation in Brazil is costly when talking about planes, but more than affordable when it comes to buses. If you don’t mind long travel times and minimal personal space, there is a bus connection that’ll get you even into the deepest jungles.
The biggest cost of any adventure in Brazil will be the plane ticket to Brazil. Once there, adventure activities vary greatly in fees, depending on location and inclusions. It is worth noting that, sometimes, the more expensive adventures in Brazil are actually better deals, as they are all-inclusive (transportation, accommodation, food, etc.). Do your research carefully before signing up for any adventure in Brazil!

Accommodation & Visas
One of the most adventurous parts of adventure travel in Brazil can be your accommodation. From cots with mosquito nets to modern hotels, bed types of any kind can be found, so mentally prepare for everything.
Housing and accommodation during adventure programs in Brazil varies depending on the nature of the activity. Out in the rainforest of the Amazon, you’ll camp under the stars in sleeping bags, huts, or program-provided tents. During adventures in Brazil’s in bigger cities, program participants will most likely stay with Brazilian host families, which is by far one of the best options available. Not only will you get home-cooked Brazilian food, but you’ll have a chance to learn Portuguese and local cultures as you’ll be immersed in the everyday life of a Brazilian family.
Visas to travel to Brazil can be a little tricky, but definitely manageable (especially if you are planning to survive jungle treks and shark-diving expeditions). Brazil has a reciprocity policy, which means that whatever foreign governments require Brazilians to do to visit their country, the Brazilian government requires foreign citizens to do in theirs. For example, American citizens have to get a tourist visa from a Brazilian embassy and pay $160, because that is what Brazilians have to do in order to visit the United States. The Golden Rule of travel politics.
Benefits & Challenges
There are few other places in the world with the the biodiversity of Brazil’s rainforests and wetlands. From aquatic animals to reptiles, there’s just nothing like it. While bird-watching and trekking can be awesome, travelers also have to deal with animals that prey on humans, such as the pesky mosquito. Those going to the Amazon will most likely have to take malaria pills and get up-to-date on their vaccinations in order to ensure they have an enjoyable adventure in Brazil.
Whether it’s a guide, fellow hiker, or local-turned-friend, Brazilians are among the most open and friendly people on the face of the planet. Always looking to lend a helping hand, travelers will never find themselves at a disadvantage when it comes to looking directions, suggestions, or playful company. Just stay away from favelas (slums), as they can be dangerous and present a different type of adventure than you may have signed up for.
Adventures in Brazil can be counted among the things in your life that you will never regret. How many people can brag that they went swimming among piranhas in the Amazon River or learned how to surf on the beaches of Rio de Janeiro? Probably not a lot. So, throw on a swimming suit, lace up the hiking boots, smother yourself in sunscreen and bug spray, and hop on down for an exciting Brazilian getaway.

My greatest adventure yet!
May 12, 2024by: Emma Gardner - United StatesBeing a student on Sea|Mester was the most incredible experience of my life. I did the South Africa to Antigua voyage on Vela, and it exceeded any and all expectations I could have possibly had. I got to visit places that I never thought I would get to go. I met people that started out as strangers, but quickly became family to me. Prior to Sea|Mester, I had very little sailing experience and no diving experience and I think that that is a common turn off for people that come across this program, but you have no need to be worried if you're in that boat (haha). The staff does an exceptional job teaching you the ropes, making you feel safe, and making you feel like the boat is your home. If you're a hands on learning that thrives on getting outside of your comfort zone, adventure, and travel then this program is for you. I can not effusive enough how much Sea|Mester and my crew changed my life. If you're presented with the privilege to be a student on Sea|Mester... do it. If Sea|Mester taught me anything, it's to say yes even when you're scared. The greatest adventure of your life could be waiting for you.

Best 3 months ever
December 14, 2023by: Matthew Pidden - EnglandI did the trip from Palau to Thailand in 21 and it was so much fun. I learnt so much, made so many great friends and got to see and experience some of the coolest stuff I’ve seen to date. The staff are all very cool, approachable and great teachers. I got 12 credits and it didn’t even feel like a semester because it was so fun. If you like adventure, travel and the ocean I couldn’t recommend this program more.

Awesome volunteer program in Victoria Falls
June 30, 2022by: Cecilia Hugo - United StatesProgram: Worlds #1 Volunteer Programs. 40+ Countries from $20/day!
I volunteered at Nakavango in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, as part of the IVHQ Wildlife Conservation Project. It truly was one of the highlights of my life. And I’ve had some pretty remarkable experiences so that says a lot. The staff a Nakavango was incredible and extremely knowledgeable. They create the perfect balance of hard work and joyous moments playing with the children at Masuwe School, observing wildlife in the bush, and taking in the sights of one of the seven wonders of the world. We each had our own room, were provided three yummy meals a day with great care to accommodate those who have special diets. Highlights of my stay included morning and evening game drives, sitting around the fire pit under the stars, camping out in the bush, and completing a work task feeling that we had made progress on a project. Yet, the most outstanding aspect of this experience for me, was bonding with my fellow volunteers. Prior to arriving at Nakavango, I thought I’d be the senior member of the crew so I was a bit apprehensive even though I had worked for weeks to get in shape physically so I could contribute equally. Well, I wasn’t the most senior. In fact, we had a wonderful range of ages, nationalities, and personalities. We became a family, caring for and respectful of all. That truly blew me away. And now, we continue to stay in touch. I am so grateful for the IVHQ program at Nakavango. It changed my life!

Bali- Ubud
July 24, 2018by: Amy Reilly - United KingdomProgram: Worlds #1 Volunteer Programs. 40+ Countries from $20/day!
I volunteered in Bali- Ubud, through IVHQ. Bali was an incredible experience. I made life long friends, taught a class of 6th graders, and got to experience a beautiful new culture. The staff were amazing, and helped out all the volunteers with whatever needs they had. The location was beautiful, we were situated in a village 20 minutes outside the town of Ubud. This allowed us to integrate in a real Balinese community. The people (the volunteers, locals & staff) were second to none. I volunteered for five weeks- by the end of those 5 weeks I was wishing I had 5 more! The only downside to this programme is missing the children you taught and the friends you made after you leave! A member of the IVHQ team was on hand from the minute I booked the trip. She answered any questions I had, and checked in with m to make sure everything was going well during the volunteer programme. Volunteering with IVHQ in Bali was absolutely the best thing I ever done. I thoroughly recommend anyone interested in volunteering abroad to consider IVHQ Bali. You wont regret it.
Amazing experience!
June 18, 2018by: DeannaProgram: Worlds #1 Volunteer Programs. 40+ Countries from $20/day!
This was the best experience of my life! I have always wanted to travel and volunteer abroad and IVHQ made this so fun and easy. During the week we were able to volunteer and take in the experiences we wanted while leaving plenty of time to explore the country for the weekend. Highly highly recommend this organization if you want a new way to travel and give back.
Hi Deanna. Thanks for such an awesome review! Magic!
April 27, 2018by: Florence Carrier - CanadaProgram: Worlds #1 Volunteer Programs. 40+ Countries from $20/day!
I went to Cusco in June-July, for 5 weeks! I volunteered 3 weeks in a school with kids and 2 weeks in the zoo of the University. Both of programs was so much fun ! Just a little warning : don't accept the food at the school , the kid and the teacher can put some pression but it's important to say NO! I said yes and i've made an indigestion 2 hours after, for 5 days... nice ! Additionally, the staff is really amazing and always there if you need help! My host-family was really cool and we were 13 volunteers in the same house , so its easy to make activity with them during the evening! In perou, I've discover some wonderful people, amazing places, good food and a different culture! My best memories was to visit Plaza del Armas, the Macchu Picchu, rainbow mountain, moray, salt mines and the lake Titicaca during the weekend. The organisation American Inca Trail is a great staff to organize your tour! Finally, Just do it !
Hi Florence, It's nice to hear from you! It sounds like you had a wonderful experience across your projects and exploring the wonders of Peru. Thanks for your feedback and for being a wonderful volunteer. We hope you'll join us again in the future. ^Andrea - IVHQ Peru - Cusco Program Manager
South Africa to Antigua 2018
April 25, 2018by: Colin Browne - United StatesI was on board Sea|mester's 112 ft schooner Argo for the Spring 2018 voyage from South Africa to Antigua. It was the highlight of my gap year, and certainly one of the best experiences I've ever had. The team of instructors were all knowledgeable and fun to be around throughout the trip and my fellow shipmates became close friends. If you are looking for a challenging, life-changing adventure and love the ocean I would highly recommend Sea|mester.
Extraordinary experience
April 19, 2018by: Nick Reinhold - United StatesA very exciting adventure. We faced many things and grew very close as a crew and family. Explored many places and did things that not very many people get to do. From exploring different places, to scuba diving, to sailing across oceans, you can do it all on Seamester.
Best summer of my life
September 06, 2017by: Evan Quinter - United StatesI cannot recommend this program enough. You get to travel to amazing places on a real sailing vessel, learn interesting subjects taught by fantastic staff, and spend a semester with people that will become your second family. Truly incredible experience!
Go
August 31, 2017by: Hayes Brown - United StatesI stumbled upon Seamester not knowing what to expect as I boarded Argo to sail from Tahiti to Australia. I’m fortunate to have family that signed me up for this trip and pretty much forced me to go. I am not required to write this review but have never had a better experience in my life and therefore feel compelled to. We saw humpback whales swim along our schooner. We dove the Great Barrier Reef. We danced in small island bars across the South Pacific, and best of all we formed a bond as a crew that will never be broken. These memories were etched into our minds to be cherished for a lifetime. These are things I never thought I would do and it brings tears to my eyes to think I almost missed out on these experiences, these people. Don’t hesitate like I did. Sign up now and take the first step towards something you will never regret.
Physical therapy in Peru
August 20, 2017by: AMC - United StatesProgram: Worlds #1 Volunteer Programs. 40+ Countries from $20/day!
I was able to volunteer at a special needs orphanage in Lima, Peru. I helped the Physical Therapist do range-of-motion with the children. It was wonderful to get the kids out of their wheelchairs and help them loosen up and relax. The best was seeing smiles on their faces from just having more stimulation. I traveled on the weekends with the other volunteers. Such an awesome experience making memories with new friends. We went sand boarding in Huacachina, hiking in Huaraz, and exploring in Cusco and Machu Picchu.
Madagascar experience
July 14, 2017by: Nathan Dunn - CanadaProgram: Worlds #1 Volunteer Programs. 40+ Countries from $20/day!
My time in Madagascar was amazing! Could not have asked for a better 3 months. All the staff are all open and welcoming and the people are just the coolest! Im glad i did the 3 months because i cant imagine doing anything shorter. The huts on camp are really nice along with the living area and the beach right below. But yea either way would highly recommend!

Best time of my life
October 31, 2016by: Leon Packheiser - GermanyProgram: Worlds #1 Volunteer Programs. 40+ Countries from $20/day!
Even if I dont speak their language the time I spent with the kids in Rio de janeiro was amazing. The smiles on their faces showed how much they apreciated what we did. I truly enjoyed the time playing soccer/football with them. Before I volunteered in Brazil I went to Colombia (Cartagena and Bogota) with IVHQ. I wanted to help these kids, but I didnt expect that they have an impact on me. I learned that there is always a reason to be happy no matter how hard life is. This time gave me so much that I took the chance to volunteer with IVHQ for the third time. If you are open minded, volunteering is the best way to travel. Living in the volunteer house felt like beeing part of a family. The work with the kids gives more experiences about culture and life than sightseeing can ever give. Brazil and also Colombia were amazing. Thank you IVHQ, I had the time of my life!
Hi Leon, What a wonderful review! Smiles are universal and we are thrilled to hear that you had an amazing time connecting with the children at your placements in Colombia and Brazil. Thanks for being an awesome volunteer and we would love to have you join us again in the future.
Life changing experience
April 22, 2016by: Alyssa R - United KingdomGoing on my Seamester journey is to date one of the best decisions I have made in my life. I made an amazing group of friends, who I am still in contact with. I got to sail across the Atlantic Ocean, which has been a dream of mine ever since I was little. I came onto this voyage, excited but not really knowing what to expect, I came out of it with a better understanding and new sense of the world. The trip was phenomenal and I am 100% glad I did it. The smell of the fresh ocean air mixed with the sight of nothing but ocean for miles in any direction is incredible, but also very hard to describe to people who have not experienced it. We started out in the BVIs with stops along the way to eventually get to our final destination of France. Along the way, we were doing everything on board. We took turns helming, going on watch, cooking our meals, cleaning up and more. You were a full member of the crew, and had the responsibilities as such. On top of that, we were also taking an oceanography class, which you may be able to get college credit for. It sounds like a lot, but it is completely manageable and you will never be bored. This was an experience that I will never forget and I hope you get the opportunity to as experience it as well.
Compact and Beautiful
October 01, 2015by: Max McCullochI absolutely loved my Sea|Mester experience for two primary reasons: firstly, it gave me the opportunity to develop my knowledge of the ocean and sailing, as intended; secondly, Sea|Mester helped foster a sense of responsibility and self-confidence I hadn't even known I possessed. I found myself cleaning bathrooms on shore after I returned home. The confined quarters of the ship allowed my to bond further with my fellow students, people the likes of which I most probably never would have encountered elsewhere, than years upon years of traditional schooling. I came back from the sea much more satisfied with myself than when I left. Parts of the voyage are difficult, I'll admit. There are, naturally, quite a few challenges, both mental and physical, of living aboard a moving vessel of limited size. But it's all worth it: the boat allows everyone to shine. I can't recommend Sea|Mester highly enough, and I can't wait to get back out to sea.
