Help care for elephants at an elephant nursery, living the life of a mahout, and helping to protect Thailand’s vulnerable population of these magnificent creatures. Explore the ancient temples, buzzing markets of Chiang Mai, and the unspoiled beauty of the northern Thai countryside. At the elephant sanctuary, where you’ll spend the bulk of your trip, rescued elephants are cared for by expert mahouts, who you’ll work alongside and learn from. You’ll immerse yourself in the life of a mahout, rising early to walk and bathe the elephants, collecting grass for meals, and feeding them. As you work, you’ll learn about these beautiful, intelligent creatures and gain a deeper respect and appreciation for their relationship with humans. Travel to Southeast Asia for a 13-day, 20-day, or 31-day adventure of a life time. The tour will take you to see the main tourist attractions and less well known hot spots for a memorable experience! The tour is led by a combination of local and western guides, who are experienced in ensuring that their groups have an amazing adventure. Group sizes are typically about 20. The 31-day tour is a circular journey that starts and ends in Bangkok. The perfect one-week trip to add to any of our two-week programs, the Thailand Adventure Bonus Week rounds out your time abroad with fun activities and cultural exploration. During the program, you will have the opportunity to explore the city of Chiang Mai, including its vibrant night and street markets, diverse cuisine, Buddhist temples, lush jungles, local villages, and majestic waterfalls. Plus, visit Doi Inthanon, Thailand's tallest mountain, and travel further north to see the infamous White Temple in Chiang Rai. Loop Abroad programs are designed for university-aged students interested in pursuing a career as veterinarians or working professionally with animals. Participants must be at least 18 years old. Most are 18 to 25, but we also accept full-time undergraduates over 25.
