  • Define your focus. Whether you prioritize professional growth, cultural exchange, or travel flexibility, defining your focus will help you choose the right role, schedule, and teaching environment.
  • Choose your subject and student level. From young learners to adult professionals, this helps tailor your resume and filter the most relevant programs in Athens.
  • Know how much independence or support you need. Some jobs offer full assistance, while others expect self-management and initiative.

Understand the benefits

Teaching in Athens combines rewarding work with unmatched access to history, sunshine, and everyday Greek culture.

  • Develop international experience in a European capital with growing ESL demand. Athens offers both professional development and resume-boosting classroom skills.
  • Enjoy a lifestyle centered around food, family, and time outdoors. The city’s balance of work and leisure makes it easy to feel at home quickly.

Things to know

Athens is full of opportunities, but being prepared will help you make the most of them from day one.

  • A TEFL certification is often required. While not always mandatory, it gives you a strong advantage in Greece’s competitive ESL market.
  • Most teachers find housing independently, often through local listings or expat groups. Shared apartments are common and more affordable, especially in central Athens.
  • Greece requires a work visa for non-EU citizens. Start early on paperwork and be sure to check your eligibility based on nationality.

Three weeks volunteering in Siem Reap

I spent three weeks volunteering at Salariin Kampuchea Learning Center in Siem Reap, where I helped teach English to younger students and supported the development of their social media presence. It was one of the most enriching experiences I’ve ever had. Some days were more challenging than others—adapting to a new environment and finding ways to communicate across cultures. But what I’ll carry with me, more than anything, is the deep sense of connection I felt with the people. I can confidently say I’ve grown and learned so much, and that’s something I’ll always be grateful for. Living and working within the local community gave me a complete perspective shift. I was struck by their warmth and generosity, and the quiet strength with which they face life. From the very beginning, I felt welcomed. The children, the staff, and my host family made me feel included from the start, making it easy to feel at home throughout my time there
