<h3>What inspired you to go abroad? <span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre">	</span></h3><p>I was inspired to go abroad because I was seeking a life-changing experience that would somehow enlighten me with new career aspirations. Naively enough, I was fully expecting that at some point in my time abroad the lightbulb above my head would light up and tell me what my path should be in life. While this didn't necessarily happen, I was hopeful nonetheless.&nbsp;</p><p>Besides my intention of finding a new path in life, I knew that I wanted to be able to practice my Spanish on a daily basis and that I didn't want to go abroad with anyone from my university. I was searching for an opportunity to completely be myself and meet new people.</p><figure class="awesome-image centered" style=""><img style="" src="https://www.goabroad.com/images/interviews/interviewphoto4-fortmiller-1492756618.jpg" alt="Indigenous women of Huilloc Valley in Peru"><figcaption class="caption">Indigenous women of Huilloc</figcaption></figure><h3>Why did you choose SIT Study Abroad? <span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre">	</span></h3><p>I knew that I wanted to study abroad in Peru, but it was SIT's program that sealed the deal. I was thrilled about the idea of getting to visit so many culturally important places in Peru and the opportunity to conduct my own research project, written and done all in Spanish.</p><h3>What was your favorite part about Cusco? <span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre">	</span></h3><p>The best part about living in Cusco was that the historic plaza was a five-minute bus ride away from my apartment, and from there I could explore for hours at a time. There were countless coffee shops, stores to browse, museums to walk through, street vendors to talk to, and this electric energy coming from all the people there. Call it the magic of the Apus, but the plaza was a spiritual place that I never got bored of exploring.</p><h3>What made your experience abroad unique? <span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre">	</span></h3><p>While a lot of people study abroad in Europe to see as many countries as they possibly can, I chose Peru so I could immerse myself into its culture and learn as much as I could about this beautifully diverse country. This, in turn, made my entire abroad experience unique. I saw Machu Picchu before the masses overtook the ruins, swam in the Amazon, learned how to speak Quechua, lived with an indigenous family on Isla Taquile, tried cow heart, lived without an internet connection, and that's not even half the experiences I can think of. Peru made my time abroad unique because Peru, it itself, is unique.</p><h3>How did local staff support you throughout your program? <span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre">	</span></h3><p>The local staff was an incredible support system. They helped our group understand how the country of Peru worked, what we needed to look out for, and gave us helpful tips on how to adjust to living in a new, foreign country. They encouraged us, as a group, to follow our aspirations and to always ask for help if and when we needed it.</p><figure class="awesome-image centered" style=""><img style="" src="https://www.goabroad.com/images/interviews/interviewphoto2-fortmiller-1492756925.jpg" alt="Cusco plaza, Peru"><figcaption class="caption">Cusco's beautiful historic plaza</figcaption></figure><h3>What's one thing you wish you would have done differently? <span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre">	</span></h3><p>Off the top of my head, I wish that I had spoken up about my likes and dislikes to my host mom earlier on in the semester. Concerned that I would hurt her feelings or be culturally insensitive, I didn't want to tell her about what foods I liked or disliked, which made it harder later on in the semester when all she was cooking was food I was not very fond of. It was a good life-lesson though, and I grew to speak up during my program more when things were happening. Besides, what's going abroad if you don't eat some food you're not used to, right?</p><h3>Describe a typical day in the life of your program. <span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre">	</span></h3><p>A typical day in Peru would go like this: I would wake up around 7:15 a.m. to the sunshine blaring through my poorly curtained window and would start to get dressed. Soon enough I would hear my host mom calling me to eat breakfast and I would quickly eat my oatmeal and pan con queso before leaving for the day.</p><p>I'd wait for my friend Jackie outside my apartment and then we'd walk to the buses together. Navigating the Peruvian bus system was not easy, but we always made it in time for class. Spanish class was first, then our lecture, and maybe a methods class or a pre-trip meeting. When class was done, we'd all take the buses back to our neighborhoods and eat lunch that had been prepared by our host mothers.</p><p>The rest of the day was up to me. Sometimes I'd head back to the plaza to explore, other times I'd sit in a local coffee shop or meet up with friends from my program. I'd always make it back in time for dinner, where my host mom and I would have extensive conversations until 10:00 pm, and then I'd go to bed, excited for the next day to start.</p><h3>What did you enjoy doing in your free time most? <span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre">	</span></h3><p>In my free time, I enjoyed exploring the city of Cusco with my friends from my program. It always felt like there was so much to do in the city that I never felt bored or trapped. Being able to have afternoons free allowed me to get closer to the people I was surrounded with day-to-day.</p><figure class="awesome-image centered" style=""><img style="" src="https://www.goabroad.com/images/interviews/interviewphoto3-fortmiller-1492756956.jpg" alt="International student reading a book in hammock in Peru"><figcaption class="caption">Enjoying the Amazon and a friendly visitor during my ISP</figcaption></figure><h3>What was your accommodation like? What did you like best about it? <span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre">	</span></h3><p>I lived in an apartment with a host mom whose kids were all grown up and out of the house. She cooked me three meals a day and always made sure my room was clean. It was nice to have a place of my own to come home to every day, and not having to worry about meals was nice, although I didn't love all the food.</p><p>I could tell that my host mom truly cared about my well-being and wanted me to succeed. We gained a lot from each other. She asked me lots of questions about the United States and I helped her practice English, and she taught me a lot about the Peruvian government and her views on the world.</p><h3>What is one thing every participant should know before participating in your program? <span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre">	</span></h3><p>I think the most important thing that each participant should know before studying abroad in Peru is to always keep an open mind and live in the moment. Living in a different country can be overwhelming at times, but it's important to acknowledge that while something may be different, that doesn't mean it's wrong.</p><blockquote>Embrace the culture and try not to compare everything to what you've grown to be accustomed to in the U.S.</blockquote><p>Try to live in the moment and not worry too much about what's going on at home without you. I had a much easier transition to life abroad when I wasn't constantly checking social media and worrying about updating my friends and family about what I was doing.</p><figure class="awesome-image centered"><img src="https://www.goabroad.com/images/interviews/interviewphoto1-fortmiller-1492756984.jpg" alt="International students at Colca Canyon in southern Peru" style="display: inline;"><figcaption class="caption">An endangered condor flying in front of our group at Colca Canyon</figcaption></figure><h3>Now that you're home, how has your program abroad impacted your life? <span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre">	</span></h3><p>Now that I'm home, I find myself daydreaming about Peru on a daily basis. While sitting in my American Gun Culture class, I often drift off and pretend to be back in Cusco, imagining that I'm sitting in a coffee shop with reggaeton playing softly in the background. I crave adventure now and have become more conscious of how I affect my environment and the people that I am around. I find myself in more in-depth conversations and have been focusing on how to use my time abroad as a way to remain focused in school. It's nice to know that a simple song or smell will trigger a memory and that I can be back in Peru if I just close my eyes.</p><h3>Would you recommend SIT Study Abroad&rsquo;s program in Peru to others? Why? <span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre">	</span></h3><p>I would absolutely recommend this program to others. Not only was it the greatest three and a half months of my life, but it was a time in my life where I felt like I have grown the most. Being able to travel through Peru and learn about how the world is impacting this beautiful country was truly eye-opening. Everyone should be able to have an experience abroad like this and make lifelong friends because of it!</p><div><br></div>

<p class="p1">I chose ISA because they had everything and more that I was looking for. They offered excursions to Machu Picchu, my number one reason for choosing Per&uacute;, as well as to the Amazon Jungle, Amazon River, the deserts of Ica.</p>
<h3>What advice would you give to other students about to study abroad in Per&uacute;?</h3>
<p class="p1">Use your Spanish, or at least try. Peruvians are such accepting and caring people; they truly appreciate your attempts at using their native tongue (for the most part &ndash; Quechua is a whole different ball park). Also, choose a homestay for the same reason. The people of Per&uacute; are so ready and willing to share their beautiful culture with the world. They welcomed us openly into their homes. I was terrified, but ended up in a wonderful home with two sisters who taught me so much about Peruvian Spanish and culture (A big plus - one happened to be a professional chef, so the food was always delicious!).</p>
<h3>Why was Lima the best place to study abroad in Per&uacute;?</h3>
<p class="p1">Since Lima is the capital of Per&uacute;, there is so much history there! It was really neat seeing the National Cathedral, the President&rsquo;s House, the Changing of the Guard, and the national futb&oacute;l stadium all within a five minute walk. Also, due to its location, Lima is the perfect place to study if you want travel to different parts of Per&uacute;. I was there for five weeks in June and the beginning of July. In those five weeks, I was in four different climates, all within easy travel distance from Lima. I was in the humid Amazon Jungle, swimming and fishing for piranhas; I was in the cool glacier-topped mountains of Cusco to visit Machu Picchu; I was in the hot, arid deserts of Ica, riding dune buggies on what was easily the best roller coaster ride of my life; I was in Lima, on the Pacific coast with beach waves perfect for surfing.</p><div class="awesome-image centered" style=""><img style="" src="http://cdn3.goabroad.com/images/interviews/interviewphoto2-caldwell-1430105401.jpg" alt="

<h3>What was your favorite class?</h3>
<p class="p1">While I was in Lima, I studied at la Universidad del Pac&iacute;fico, and took two classes: Advanced Spanish Grammar and Latin American Literature. I enjoyed both of them; the professors were great and we called them by their first names. My favorite of the two would have to be the Latin American Literature class, though. We read and discussed pieces of literature, from poems to short stories to excerpts of novels, written by authors from all over Latin America. We even had to write our own pieces.</p>
<h3>How has study abroad impacted your life?</h3>
<p class="p1">Study abroad really made me appreciate all that I have here at home. At the same time, it made me realize that I am somewhat spoiled by American culture. In Per&uacute;, I learned how to appreciate a three hour meal, and that having your personal bubble invaded constantly is not always a bad thing. My time in Per&uacute; also really increased my confidence when it comes to the Spanish language. I feel so much better using it now, even though I&rsquo;m still not completely fluent.</p>
<p class="p1">Another big impact that study abroad has had on my life is that now I cannot stop traveling! I have since traveled to London on my own, studied abroad a second time in Poland and Germany, and have plans to travel so much more!&nbsp;</p>

Quechua was, and still is, a language that fascinates me, and I thought it was appropriate to begin learning it where it itself began: the Andes.</div><h3>Why did you choose a program focused on Quechua?</h3><div>I want to work with language conservation efforts in the future, and I do not think knowing Spanish alone is enough for that type of work in South America. Quechua is underrepresented today, but has a historically important cultural presence that still resonates within the Andes. I see Quechua as another tool and window into South American culture. Anyone who has a vested interest in Peru, let alone South America, I think ought to investigate it further.</div><h3>What was your favorite part about the location of your program?</h3><div>I lived in a small town outside of Cusco (Qosqo in Quechua) called Pisac (Pisaq). It was relatively quiet up until the town festival and allowed me to study and focus on Quechua. However, it was still close enough to Cusco to go into the city when I had a free day. I was able to live in both rural and urban Peruvian settings.</div><div class="awesome-image centered"><img style="display: inline;" src="http://cdn4.goabroad.com/images/interviews/interviewphoto3-chung-1427794884.jpg" alt="Hiking to Machu Picchu, Peru"><div class="caption"><p>A trip to Machu Picchu - Photo Courtesy of Ben Chung</p></div></div><h3>What made language study in Peru unique for you?</h3><div>Few people specifically want to study Quechua when they come to Peru, but there are many Peruvians enthusiastically ready to teach foreigners their native tongue. Projects Abroad offers instruction both in more widely spoken languages like Arabic and Spanish as well as local languages like Wolof and Ewe. Quechua is one of the local language programs, and even for other Projects Abroad volunteers in the town, I was a black sheep for studying this less widely spoken language.</div><h3>How supportive was local staff throughout your program?</h3><div>The Projects Abroad staff was helpful and understanding domestically and in-country. When I had an issue with my class schedule, they listened and responded to my concerns and problems promptly, even though it was a little difficult to contact them at first.</div><h3>What do you wish you could change about your program experience?</h3><div class="awesome-image right-aligned" style="width: 350px;"><img style="" src="http://cdn2.goabroad.com/images/interviews/interviewphoto4-chung-1427795134.jpg" alt="Statue near Machu Picchu in Peru"><div class="caption"><p>&iexcl;Bienvenidos a Pisac! - Photo Courtesy of Ben Chung</p></div></div><div>I wish I had learned and spoken more Quechua in Peru. I did not reach a level of fluency; I did not expect to. However, I wish I had done more since I knew it would be harder to continue learning Quechua in the U.S. Additionally, getting my finances settled beforehand would have been optimal. It is not fun to be in Peru with just a few Soles in your pocket.</div><h3>What was a normal day like for you in Peru?</h3><div>I would wake up at around 6:30 a.m. for my 45 minute Quechua class at 7:00 a.m. It was early, but my teacher was usually late or sometimes did not show up, so I would go to the local caf&eacute;, Ulrike's, to get in some extra studying or for food. Classes would end at around 11:00 a.m. or 12:00 p.m., and so afterward, I would do homework with my housemate who at the time was learning Spanish. After work and lunch, my housemate and I would go hiking, to the market, into Qosqo, or hang out with locals or other volunteers. At nights, all the volunteers and our local friends would convene at our Peruvian friend&rsquo;s bar for some decompression and relaxation.</div><h3>What activities did you enjoy most outside of your language lessons?</h3><div class="awesome-image left-aligned" style="width: 350px;"><img style="" src="http://cdn4.goabroad.com/images/interviews/interviewphoto1-chung-1427795068.jpg" alt="Eating cuy (Guinea Pig) in Peru"><div class="caption"><p>Festival <i>cuy</i>! (Guinea Pig)</p></div></div><div>The final week I was there, the town had a huge festival for their patron saint. It was a perfect end to my time in Peru. Most nights, we would go to the public/private get-togethers on what seemed like every corner of the town, eating local foods like <i>cuy</i> (guinea pig) and enjoying Peruvian party customs. It was a great way to say goodbye to a bunch of people I grew close to. We still remain in contact to this day.</div><p><br></p><h3>What kind of housing did you have in Peru?</h3><div>I lived with a host family that owned a small bar close to the main plaza of the town. They were welcoming, gave me my own room, and spoke some Quechua too! They treated my housemate and me just like real family, especially when the whole house got the flu for a week.</div><div><br></div><div>Some of my friends recently went down to Peru and even visited Pisaq, delivering some letters for me to some friends and my old host family. They all ended up spending the day in Pisaq with them, and my host family even sent a letter back with them for me.</div><div><br></div><blockquote>I have had host families in the past, and this one by far was one of the friendliest, always teaching me about Peru and its customs.</blockquote><h3>How have you taken what you learned in Peru and applied it in your life at home?</h3><div>In the United States, I volunteer at a local Hispanic center, and there are some Peruvians that work here as well who are at least familiar with Quechua and Aymara, another indigenous language of the Andes. Quechua works as a mechanism for cross-cultural connection, and through them, I have learned about other opportunities to learn Quechua domestically. I am still a student of the language and am looking forward to studying Quechua and other indigenous languages more in-depth at university.</div>

<p>Originally I chose ISA because of what the overall study abroad package offered. Working with ISA throughout the beginning stages was quite easy as well. I didn&rsquo;t really see the benefits of choosing ISA as my study abroad program until after I had returned to the states.</p>
<h3><b>Why would you choose ISA again?</b></h3>
<p>After my study abroad experience was over, I found myself very glad that I chose to study with ISA. The two directors we had there were beyond welcoming, supportive, helpful and overall just a joy to be around. From the second they picked us up at the airport, I felt really comfortable being in my surroundings and knowing that I could always turn to them for help.</p>
<p>The first couple of days, we were in Lima for orientation and to meet the group before we took a short flight to Cusco. In fact, the first night that my friend and I were in Lima we went to see <i>Los Vengadores</i> (the Avengers) in Spanish with one of the directors (Haha). It was a really refreshing experience to have directors that weren&rsquo;t uptight. They were very friendly and personable. By the end of our experience, our directors were more like father figures and friends.</p>
<h3><b>What was one of your most memorable experiences with ISA?</b></h3>
<p>The best experience I had with ISA was during those six weeks in Peru. Our directors would often plan trips for us once a week (either on a weeknight, a weekend, or both) that were educational and fun. As a group we attended a salsa lessons together, visited some Inca ruins (this included Machu Picchu among others), made traditional bracelets, and went to a mini-concert of antique Peruvian instruments. I loved all of the extra activities they had planned for us! The activities were always exciting and interesting. They really helped add to our experience and learn more about the culture in general.</p>
<h3><b>As an Oklahoma State University alumni, what advice would you give to other Oklahoma State students going to study abroad in Peru?</b></h3>
<p>Whether you&rsquo;re an OSU student or a student from another university, the following advice is applicable for everyone! Here are some quick tips for Cusco if you choose to go there (which I hope you do!):</p>
<p>1. Don&rsquo;t buy any souvenirs, clothes, little trinkets, anything like that for the first few weeks. The few days we spent in Lima were great but unfortunately a lot of students wasted their money on things that we later found in Cusco for one fifth of the price. Be patient, I know how hard it is to hold onto your soles when that llama sweater is calling your name (Haha). But from my experience, I saved a lot of money by checking out all of the different markets and finding the cheapest options for the exact same things my friends had bought at much higher rates.&nbsp;</p>
<p>2. Never turn down an experience no matter how random or silly it seems. Be bold! Some of the best nights I remember having were when my host brother and sister took us out on school nights. We&rsquo;d hit up random pubs/bars, go dancing, everything and anything. One time, our host brother even took us to a huge concert by a Peruvian legend (she was basically the Aretha Franklin of Peru) that was incredible and off the tourist track.</p>
<p>3. Don&rsquo;t let the cost of the trip deter you from the overall experience. My summer program was a unique one, and because of it being in the summer it actually cost more than a full semester in Cusco. Despite the cost, I knew that I would regret not going and missing out an incredible opportunity. There are a lot of great options out there to pay for studying abroad! Overall, I paid for half of the trip with scholarships and the other half with financial aid.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>
<h3><b>Why was Cusco the best place to study abroad in Peru?</b></h3>
<p>One of the parts I enjoyed most about going to Cusco was the culture. Cusco is known as the capital of the Incas and it does not disappoint. From the middle of the Plaza Mayor to the hilltops of Cusco, there are so many things to see, do, eat, and visit. Our experience included going to Machu Picchu (it&rsquo;s as magical and stunning as the pictures show &ndash; even more so in person), a few other Inca ruin sites, and various parades and festivals.</p>
<p>The whole month of June is a big celebration leading up to the independence day of Peru. Due to this, we literally saw dozens of parades and festivals every week we were there. One night even included fireworks and a pop band performing in the Plaza Mayor surrounded by thousands of locals.</p>
<p>My friend from my university, Vanessa, and I would often go dancing every weekend. And by every weekend I mean every Wednesday through Saturday (Haha). A few of the <i>discotecas</i> offer free Salsa lessons for a few hours before they officially open to the more freestyle dancing. We&rsquo;d often get our homework and studying done right after school and then spend our nights either dancing or hitting up some local hangouts with other students. There were very little nights that we stayed in the apartment and just hung out.&nbsp;</p>
<h3><b>What were you two favorite classes in Peru?</b></h3>
<p>The first class I took focused on romantic literature that was entirely in Spanish. Due to a strike that summer, the university had hired some professors from Spain to come and teach at <i>Centro Tinku</i>. Luckily one of them taught our literature class which definitely added to the experience! The class was time consuming with lots of readings and writing essays. It helped me greatly improve my writing skills.</p>
<p>The second class I took was taught by the University President and was called &ldquo;The History of the Incas.&rdquo; This class was taught entirely in English. The history class was a lot of memorizing and recalling names (as many history classes are), and although it didn&rsquo;t pique my interest as much as the literature class did, I still enjoyed learning about local culture and history. Also, there were a lot of interesting group projects. One even involved us breaking up into groups and exploring different areas of Cusco that were kind of off the map&hellip;I loved exploring the countryside and hills! It included a lot of beautiful scenery.</p>
<h3><b>What did you gain from studying abroad in Peru?</b></h3>
<p>I am very passionate about my experience and what I gained from it. My Spanish improved tremendously, but I also experienced a personal growth. Before going to Cusco, I was very anxious and nervous about my Spanish abilities. Throughout the experience, I learned that trying my best was the most important thing. I learned to stop worrying about others judging my ability and skills. I made a lot of mistakes before, during, and after my experience but that was all part of the learning process. I feel more confident now than ever speaking Spanish to anyone I meet whether they are a native speaker or not. Studying abroad definitely instilled in me a more determined drive and spirit for the language and culture that I had not had previously.</p>

<h3><strong>Why did you choose ISA over other study abroad programs?</strong></h3>
<p>I chose to study with ISA because they had the option for a 10-week experience. I did the joint ISA and eLAP program. I loved it because I got to study for five weeks and then work in Lima for the following five weeks. I was able to work on my Spanish while studying and then got to really use what I had learned while working.</p>
<p>ISA also offered a lot of excursions. I went on all of them and was able to see so much of what Peru had to offer from sand dunes to the Amazon rainforest to ancient ruins. I definitely suggest taking advantage of the optional excursions. They were a great value.</p>
<p>When I spoke with the ISA program managers on the phone they were so excited for the summer and helped answer all of my questions. I loved my experience with ISA and advised my friends to study abroad with them as well.</p>
<h3><strong>What advice would you give to other students going to </strong><a href=https://www.goabroad.com/study-abroad/search/peru/lima/study-abroad-1 rel="" target="_self" className="link"><strong>study abroad in Lima</strong></a><strong>?</strong></h3>
<p>The excursions are a must! I got to see so much of the country for a great price. The ISA team was very organized and constantly had planned activities for us. I was able to experience things I would have never even imagined possible because of the awesome ISA excursions.</p>
<p>While in Lima, really become a part of the city. Get to know the culture outside of your school. Go to museums and parks with the other students. Hang out with the locals and speak as much Spanish as you can. It's easy to get in the habit of speaking English with other students, but that isn't going to help you immerse yourself in the culture.</p>
<p>A tip- you are from the United States, you are not solely "American". In Peru, they consider themselves "American" so remember that when introducing yourself!</p>
<h3><strong>What made Lima a great place to study abroad?</strong></h3>
<p>Lima was constantly alive! There were always so many events going on in all different parts of the city. Every weekend we had so many activities to choose from. The ISA team in Lima is awesome! They are so helpful and fun.</p>
<h3><strong>Of all the courses you took in Lima, which was your favorite?</strong></h3>
<p>I loved my International Marketing class. We were given many projects. It was more than just writing papers and taking tests. We had to apply what we learned in presentations. Our teacher was very knowledgeable about marketing and gave us advice that you wouldn't usually be given in a classroom setting. The class was at night but I looked forward to heading back to school to learn.</p>
<h3><strong>Looking back, how did participating in ISA’s study abroad program impact your life?</strong></h3>
<p>I enjoyed my marketing class so much that I decided to get my Masters in Marketing at Texas A&amp;M this fall. I found a subject that I was really passionate about while in Lima, one that I hope have a career in. I learned a lot about myself in Lima and was able to try so many new things.</p>
