<h4>What inspired you to go abroad?</h4>
<p>My first trip abroad was to Mexico when I was in college, studying Spanish. That experience changed everything for me; it brought the language to life and showed me how much we can learn by stepping outside our comfort zones.</p>
<p>It ultimately led me to become a teacher, and now I’m passionate about giving my own students that same opportunity. I want them to see that learning a language isn’t just about words, it’s about people, culture, and connection.</p>
<p>Seeing their eyes light up as they experienced Mexico for themselves inspires me to keep leading these programs.</p>

<p>I first connected with Bethel University Global Studies back in 2016, when Director Stacie Freeman was teaching dual-enrollment sociology at Greenfield High School. She was leading a trip to Cuba that semester, and I immediately saw how powerful that experience could be for my own students. Since then, we’ve traveled together every year.</p>
<p>I chose BU Global Studies because I trust the <a title="undefined" href=https://www.goabroad.com/providers/bethel-university-global-studies-2/programs/the-magic-of-mexico-explore-the-yucatan-198678 rel="" target="_self" class="clickTracker" rev="domainID=6&amp;refererType=1&amp;refererID=3367&amp;abbreviation=CSCT&amp;clientID=63361" data-ga-client="Bethel University Global Studies" data-contentlink=""><ins>program</ins></a> completely. They design safe, meaningful experiences tailored for my rural, Title I students who are often traveling internationally for the first time.</p>
<p>The opportunity to earn college credit is another huge plus; it helps my students stand out on college and job applications.</p>
<h4>What was your favorite part about Mexico?</h4>
<p>My favorite part of the trip was exploring the Maya ruins with my students. Seeing their curiosity and excitement as history came to life right in front of them was incredible.</p>
<p>We ended the week with a trip to the beach to celebrate all we’d learned; one of our students had never seen the ocean before. Watching him step into the waves for the first time was a moment I’ll never forget. It reminded me exactly why we do this: to give students experiences that change how they see the world and themselves.</p>
<h4>What made your experience abroad extraordinary?</h4>
<p>What made this experience extraordinary was seeing our students discover the world for the first time. Many had never flown or been surrounded by another language, but they embraced every moment.</p>
<p>BU Global Studies carefully hired just the right local guide, Pablo, who made our time in Mexico truly special. Watching my students interact with him was heartwarming; they formed a genuine connection.</p>
<p>For me, that’s the essence of what I love about Global Studies: the relationships. Those human connections are what make travel so meaningful and unforgettable.</p>
<h4>How did local staff support you throughout your program?</h4>
<p>The local staff was incredible; every detail was handled perfectly, from airport pickup to meals, hotels, and tours. I didn’t have to worry about a thing.</p>
<p>What really stood out was how personal it all felt. This wasn’t a “big bus” tour; it was a private experience just for me and my students. We felt cared for, supported, and honestly, a little like royalty. Their professionalism and warmth made it easy for me to focus entirely on my students and their learning experience.</p>

<h4>What's one thing you wish you would have done differently during your time abroad?</h4>
<p>If I could do one thing differently, I’d incorporate even more Spanish into the program.</p>
<p>As a Spanish teacher, I know how easy it is to slip back into speaking English, especially when everyone working in tourism is bilingual or multilingual. Our students learned a lot and gained incredible confidence speaking Spanish throughout the week, but I know we could push it even further.</p>
<p>Next time, I plan to create more intentional moments for full immersion. There’s no better classroom than real-world conversation, and every exchange helps them grow as both travelers and language learners.</p>
<h4>Describe what a typical day in your life abroad looked like.</h4>
<p>A typical day on the Mexico program starts with breakfast together before heading out for a full day of exploration and learning. We might visit a Maya archaeological site, swim in a cenote, or spend time with a local family learning traditional cooking. Lunch is often a cultural experience in itself, fresh, local food shared around the table. Afternoons are for reflection, language practice, or exploring local markets. Evenings bring group dinners, laughter, and conversation about what we’ve learned that day.</p>
<p>Every day is thoughtfully planned by BU Global Studies and our local partners to balance education, culture, and connection; it’s the perfect blend of structure and adventure.</p>
<h4>What did you enjoy doing during your free time abroad?</h4>
<p>During free time, I loved exploring alongside the students, shopping for souvenirs, listening to live music, and soaking up the atmosphere. We also made it a mission to find the best local coffee spots (which didn’t take long in Mexico!).</p>
<p>Those relaxed moments together were some of my favorites. They gave us time to connect, laugh, and just enjoy being part of the local culture.</p>
<h4>What type of accommodation did you have? What did you like best about it?</h4>
<p>We stayed in nice, clean, centrally located hotels in both Mérida and Valladolid. The locations couldn’t have been better; they gave us a comfortable home base and easy access to everything we wanted to see.</p>
<p>I especially liked that we could break into small groups and explore safely on foot without needing taxis or shuttles. It made the experience feel more immersive and convenient, and students loved the independence it gave them to wander, shop, and practice their Spanish in real settings.</p>
<h4>What is one thing every future participant should know about your program before their program begins?</h4>
<p>One thing every future participant should know is that they’ll have the time of their lives.</p>

<h4>What do you feel the biggest benefit of traveling abroad is?</h4>
<p>The biggest benefit of traveling abroad is perspective. It opens your eyes to how big and how connected the world really is.</p>
<p>Students start to see beyond their hometowns and realize that people everywhere share the same hopes and challenges. Travel builds empathy, confidence, and curiosity in a way no classroom ever could. It also helps students discover their own independence and see themselves as capable global citizens.</p>
<p>For many of my rural students, it’s the moment they realize the world is within their reach — and that changes everything for them!</p>
<h4>Now that you're home, how has your time abroad impacted your life?</h4>
<p>Well, I’m already working with BU Global Studies to plan my next adventure, if that tells you anything!</p>
<p>Each trip reminds me why I teach and how powerful travel can be for students. Seeing them grow in confidence, curiosity, and compassion inspires me to keep creating more opportunities for them to experience the world.</p>
<h4>What does meaningful travel mean to you?</h4>
<p>When students travel meaningfully, they return home changed in how they see others and in how they see themselves. That’s what makes travel truly powerful.</p>
<p>They come back with greater confidence, not just in their Spanish-speaking skills, but in who they are. They’ve learned to adapt, to problem-solve, and to navigate unfamiliar situations with patience and courage.</p>
<p>In short, they return home better equipped for life, with a broader worldview and a deeper appreciation for people and places beyond their own.</p>

<h3>What inspired you to go abroad?</h3><p>One of my goals is to become an international citizen. I believe experiencing and understanding various cultures is critical. I have always wanted to go to M&eacute;xico; it just made so much sense, since I grew up in Texas. At the time, I was finishing my minor in Spanish and I was able to complete that minor in M&eacute;xico, and solidify my fluency in Spanish during that time as well. What were some of your favorite parts about your program?</h3><p>SOL is an excellent program! It's a wonderful value at a fair price. The program is the best bang for your buck. The staff is personal and the homestay experience is wonderful! They also give you enough space to explore on your own.</p><h3>What did you like most about Oaxaca?</h3><p>I love that the was very walker-friendly. You can get to where you want to go by foot and if you need to take a taxi, it's super cheap.</p><h3>How difficult was it to communicate with locals?</h3><p>Not at all. A few people had really thick accents and that made it difficult, but I was basically fluent by the time I got to Oaxaca, so communication was not an issue.</p><h3>What made your experience abroad unique?</h3><p>The fact that I was able to use my ability in Spanish to navigate my way through the country and with the people was amazing to me. I also made a point to go out of my way and meet more people independently. I loved learning more about the city and the country through the people.</p><h3>What surprised you most about Oaxaca?</h3><p>I am from Houston. The fact that the weather was remarkably like Houston was a pleasant surprise. I was also surprised how dehydrated I became. I should have drank more water. They are always within reach in case anything goes awry.</p><h3>What's one thing you wish you would have done differently?</h3><p>I wish I went out on my own earlier and tried more often to build relationships independently.</p><h3>Describe a typical day in the life of your program.</h3><p>A typical day started with breakfast, then a walk to class. After class there was either a cultural event or free time to finish homework and explore the city.</p><h3>What did you enjoy doing in your free time?</h3><p>I loved walking around the city, setting up a little sign "I'm practicing my Spanish, would you like to have a conversation?", and see who would approach me.</p><h3>What was the hardest part about studying abroad?</h3><p>The hardest part is finding out where you are going and how to "blend in" as much as possible. It took me a while to find unique places to hangout and really enjoy my time in Mexico.</p><h3>What was your accommodation like? What did you like best about it?</h3><p>My accommodations were excellent. I loved my host family. I had my own room and bathroom. I liked seeing the little kids; my host family had two little boys and I loved them!</p><h3>What is one thing every participant should know before participating in your program?</h3><p>Bring a good pair of walking shoes and do not fall trap to herd mentality! Make sure to branch out from the people you travel with! Some people are under the impression that Mexico is inherently dangerous, but that's not true! As mentioned above, have comfortable walking shoes. Pack LIGHT, and only bring one suitcase.</p><h3>What have been the biggest benefits of studying abroad for you?</h3><p>I loved building relationships with other people. Also, I enjoyed learning more about other cultures and having my viewpoints broadened. It made me feel connected.</p><h3>Now that you're home, how has your time abroad impacted your life?</h3><p>I want to go back! I also want to travel to more places abroad. I am beginning to realize that the core values that keep a family together are the same regardless of what country we are in.</p><h3>Would you recommend Sol Education Abroad to other students? Why?</h3><p>YES! The program is an excellent value and the staff is wonderful. It is a safe way to be exposed to Mexican culture for the first time.</p><h3>If you could study abroad again, where would you go?</h3><p>I would go back to Oaxaca. I really enjoyed my time there. I would not mind exploring other states in Mexico, but I do not want to go to the super tourist-centric areas in M&eacute;xico because it is not real Mexico.</p>

<h3>What inspired you to go abroad?</h3>
<p>Since my first year at St. Olaf College, I have been inspired by the many students who have gone abroad. I knew that my college actively supported students interested in a global education, whether the program was sponsored through our college or another undergraduate program. I realized that as a Spanish major, it was not enough to merely develop my language abilities in a classroom setting; I also wanted to learn from the cultures and people who shape the language.</p>

<h3>Why did you choose the Center for Global Education and Experience?</h3>
<p>My first year advisor brought the program to my awareness, because he knew it suited my passion for social justice and my intended majors (Spanish and social work). I knew that this program would likely be a good fit for me. Since I already traveled to Spain in the past, I wanted to immerse myself in a Latin American country, and I was drawn to the home stay component of the program in order to foster relationships with a family and continue my language development outside of the classroom. Other than St. Olaf's interim program in South Africa, I was unaware of any other programs designed specifically for social work students. I also appreciated Augsburg College's commitment to diversity and felt as if I would be welcomed into the program.</p>
<h3>What was your favorite part about Mexico?</h3>
<p>My favorite part about being in Mexico was the connections I made with the people. I formed a positive relationship with my host family, and they continue to be very supportive of me by expressing their affections on Facebook. I also had the opportunity to visit a friend's relatives throughout the state of Veracruz during Semana Santa, and her family treated me as if I was also part of the family. My experiences in the U.S. could not compare to the exceptional hospitality provided by the families who welcomed me into their homes.</p>
<h3>What made your experience abroad unique?</h3>
<p>As someone with Filipino heritage, I noticed a lot of cultural similarities between my relatives and the Mexican families I encountered during my stay. For example, my host mom in Cuernavaca and my mom in the U.S. both believe that an itchy palm indicates that they will receive money in the future. I later learned about the Manila-Acapulco Spanish trade route that connected the Philippines and Mexico. This explained why I found foods such as adobo, longanisa, and Manila mangoes in Cuernavaca, and it felt very cool to share a piece of history with my Mexican friends.</p>
<h3>How did local staff support you throughout your program?</h3>
<p>I was going through a difficult time with issues at home and mental health before I came to Mexico, and one of my professors at St. Olaf College recommended that I address some of my concerns with the director of the program, Professor Ann Lutterman-Aguilar. She responded with compassion, offered her support, and continued to follow-up with me throughout the following months to make sure I was adjusting to the program. Additionally, I appreciated Lisanne Morgan's thoughtfulness for providing me with a women-only home stay upon a somewhat late request. All of the faculty staff members were kind and welcoming to me, and I felt that my voice mattered since all of my concerns were taken seriously.</p>

<h3>What's one thing you wish you would have done differently?</h3>
<p>There was a period of time towards the end of the program where I was struggling to turn a handful of projects in on time. I was having a difficult time prioritizing my time spent on class work, my host family, and the friends I made on the program. Although I was able to negotiate extensions with my social work professor for a couple projects, I wish that I had pushed myself to plan out my time in a more strategic manner.</p>
<h3>Describe a typical day in the life of your program.</h3>
<p>During the five-week period when I had Spanish classes at the local language school Universal, I would wake up at my host family's house at 6:45 a.m and take a quick shower before eating a sizable breakfast prepared by my host mother. I would then leave the house with a lunch my host mom packed me and take the 10-minute bus route to the language school for my 8 a.m. class (my host mother had previously shown me exactly how to take the bus by riding it alongside me for a couple days).</p>
<p>My class size for contemporary Mexican literature was very small; since there was only one other student and the professor in the class, we two students spent a lot of time discussing the readings and also had individual time to develop our speaking abilities. We had a couple of breaks during our three-hour class session, and I would sometimes join students in other Spanish classes to buy some bread or donuts at the <em>panadería</em> down the street. After Spanish classes, we continued our social work classes down the street at the Casa CEMAL for a few hours in the afternoon.</p>
<p>On Thursdays, we would have Latin dance lessons for a couple hours in the evening, but on days of the week when we had fewer classes, I would visit a cafe in the <em>centro</em> with friends, or exercise at the gym down the street, before heading home on the bus to my host family. I would do my reading for my Spanish class while joining my host sister and host mother in the living room as we chatted about our days and watched television together. My host mother prepared dinner for us, and afterwards I would continue doing my homework in my room before going to sleep.</p>
<h3>What did you enjoy doing in your free time?</h3>
<p>A few other students and I bought a gym membership for a couple months, and we would go exercise a few times a week. I liked walking to the centro for coffee or ice cream with friends or taking a taxi to the mall and buy clothes or eat out. My host family took me out several times to meet family members, eat at a restaurant, or visit one of the local nature sites. On hot days, a few students and I would walk to the pool at Universal down the street. Most afternoons, I always enjoyed watching a movie or a television show with my host family, which definitely helped boost my vocabulary. Occasionally I would go out to bars or nightclubs on the weekends with friends.</p>

<h3>What was your accommodation like? What did you like best about it?</h3>
<p>Over the months we spent in Mexico, we stayed in multiple locations. For a total two months (I opted for an extended home stay, but some students elected to only stay for the required month), I stayed in my urban host family's home. My room was on the ground floor next to the living room and a bathroom equipped with a shower. My host mom and sister lived on the second floor, and their dog stayed on the partially shaded roof on the third floor. I liked the location of my home stay because it was convenient to take the bus to and from classes, and sometimes I could even walk to school. The local market also served as a good landmark for taxi drivers since I often forgot my host family's address.</p>
<p>Additionally, I spent a week in Amatlan de Quetzalcoatl, and a weekend in Ixtlilco, for shorter home stays with families. In Amatlan de Quetzalcoatl, I shared a room with a student in the <a href=https://www.goabroad.com/providers/center-for-global-education-and-experience-augsburg-college/programs/migration-globalization-and-the-environment-89 rel="" target="_self" className="link">Migration, Globalization, and the Environment</a> program. My host family of four in Amatlan had chickens and dogs in their backyard, and they showed us how to pick coffee beans and shuck corn. The kitchen was separate from the rest of the house, and it was fascinating to watch my host mom cook delicious homemade tortillas on the <em>comal.</em> I really liked the strong sense of community among all of the families, and I learned so much about indigenous medicinal practices from my host sister and the <em>curandera, </em>who did a demonstration of an egg cleanse for us.</p>
<p>In Ixtlilco el Grande, a fellow social work student and I stayed with parents whose children worked in Minnesota. It was evident that the community was proud of their farming accomplishments, and many families had stories to tell of the time they had spent migrating between Mexico and the U.S.</p>
<p>In between times where I was assigned to live with host families, I lived in Casa CEMAL and Casa Verde, two houses across the street from each other that contained classrooms, living spaces, and student dormitories. The international resident assistant lived in the lower floor of Casa CEMAL, and professors' offices were also located on the premises. I spent some of my time in a room with three other students and another period in a room to myself. Since only staff members were permitted to use the laundry machines, students were mandated to either hand-wash their clothes or pay a <em>lavandería</em> to do it.</p>
<p>On weekdays, we had regular meals served to us by the staff members, and we would help ourselves to refrigerated food set aside for the weekends. Students were allowed to use the kitchen upon request. During the weeks spent on the exchange with the social work students from Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico (UNAM), we spent one week in a house close to the campus in Mexico City, and following that, students came to live with us in our rooms in Casa CEMAL and Casa Verde. I became very close with my roommate from UNAM, and I had so much fun getting to know the UNAM students and having activities like karaoke night.</p>

<h3>What is one thing every participant should know before participating in your program?</h3>
<p>I would encourage everybody to try to step out of their comfort zone by being proactive about learning Spanish. Although I came with a Spanish major, there were definitely times where I had to challenge myself to speak up when I was anxious or when I lacked the vocabulary to describe certain things. Some students with less experience speaking Spanish also were intimidated that we began the program by spending an entire week paired off with each other with our first set of families, but those who were really committed to learn the language tended to succeed faster than the ones who were not as motivated.</p>
<p>Typically, locals were patient with me and appreciated that I made the effort to speak with them even though my Spanish was far from perfect. Having an extended home stay also greatly helped me improve my language comprehension since I only spoke Spanish at home; if students get along well with their host family, I would recommend that they coordinate staying for a longer period of time with their host family.</p>
<h3>Now that you're home, how has your program abroad impacted your life?</h3>
<p>I now realize that I used to be rather insulated from the rest of the world due to my privilege as a U.S. citizen. I never knew how interconnected the states Minnesota and Morelos were until I heard the stories of migrant workers, and visited small towns where it was common for family members to periodically work in the U.S. before returning home.</p>
<p>Whereas many Mexican people followed U.S. events closely, I was embarrassed to find that I was largely ignorant of the history and politics in Mexico before I was required to learn about them in my programs. I now try to be more intentional about learning about what is occurring on a global scale. I was also inspired by many of the community leaders who worked tirelessly to effect change, and I now hope to become more active in my surrounding community, not just my college campus.</p>
<h3>Why would you recommend CGEE to other students?</h3>

<p>I was able to interact face-to-face with professionals and individuals sharing their lived experiences. Although there were certainly several difficult moments during my study abroad program, overcoming them helped me become more mature and conscientious.</p>

<h3><span class="s1">What inspired you to go abroad?</span></h3><p class="p1"><span class="s1">I am a scholarship recipient and I had a stipend to have it fully paid. I absolutely had no intention or desire to go study abroad. I am turning 40 years old, this is my second degree, I have a family, and I work 40 plus hours a week in apartment management. I am a homebody in general, and have not traveled since we went to Costa Rica for our honeymoon in 2007. That being said, I was highly encouraged by the Texas State University financial aid and scholarship department (Stephanie, Adi, and Ray) to take advantage of this opportunity. They helped me get over the fear of being away from my family and job by just relating to me that there is a program to suit everyone, and that my family would be ok and would support me. Which they did. Getting support from my family and my employer was my top priority. The Texas State financial aid department got my aid approval quickly, and Sol Education Abroad gave me absolutely everything I needed to be successful on the trip. The directors for Sol Education Abroad in Mexico were outstanding people, top notch!</span></p><h3><span class="s1">What's one thing you wish you would have done differently?</span></h3><p class="p3"><span class="s1"><span class="Apple-tab-span">	</span></span></p><p class="p1"><span class="s1">Packed more underwear!! Seriously I wish I had packed fewer shoes, shirts, and pants, and just packed more underwear. Underwear shopping in a foreign country is complicated.</span></p><h3><span class="s1">Describe a typical day in the life of the Sol Education Abroad Oaxaca program.</span></h3><p class="p1"><span class="s1">Wake up and have an amazing breakfast and coffee with my host mom/family. Walk eight blocks to the university (stopping for churros, <i>pan dulce,</i> or fresh squeezed juice on the way). Have highly focused Spanish lessons for four hours, lunch, and then go to a cultural activity like a native Oaxacan cooking class, or tour Santo Domingo Cathedral, or go to the art and museum district.</span></p><h3><span class="s1">What did you enjoy doing in your free time?</span></h3><p class="p1"><span class="s1">I loved exploring Oaxaca. I went to many churches, museums, and <i>mercados</i> that were not part of the program. I also enjoyed doing things with my host family like shopping, visiting another town and family, visiting off the beaten path places important to Oaxaca. She was widowed, but her daughter and other family lived close. She absolutely reminded me of my grandmother. The accommodations were great: I was treated very well, I had my privacy, and I felt safe and secure the entire time.</span></p><h3><span class="s1">What is one thing every participant should know before participating in your program?</span></h3><p class="p1"><span class="s1">I always try to think of what I can bring to an occasion or to another country. I would suggest focusing on a nice personal gift for your host family, and something personal that you can share with your teacher or the school. I knew that we were going to an "all grades" university. So I brought a ziploc bag of stickers such as Frozen, Star Wars, Avengers, Shopkins, Peppa Pig, etc.. I gave them out to the little elementary kids at my school in Oaxaca.</span></p><h3><span class="s1">Now that you're home, how has your program abroad impacted your life?</span></h3><p class="p1"><span class="s1">I have thought about it everyday since I have been back. Being back, I am grateful, and I have been practicing more patience. When you are in a foreign country and do not speak the language, you must be patient and thoughtful to avoid being rude or frustrated. <p class="p3">I chose to study abroad in part because it was required for my degree, but more importantly I wanted an international experience that could set me apart in the increasingly competitive global workforce.</p>
<h3>What made you select Mexico as opposed to other more traditional destinations?</h3>
<p class="p3">Mexico was by far the best value for study abroad, which made this location very attractive. Furthermore, Mexico-U.S. relations have been a continually relevant topic in our media. <h3>What were your housing arrangements like in Oaxaca?</h3>
<p class="p3">I lived in a beautiful two-story house surrounded by a garden of fruit trees and herbs that my host Mom used for cooking. My host family was very hospitable, and I had my own room with a shared bathroom. My host family&rsquo;s house was within walking distance to the main city center in Oaxaca and different universities.</p>
<h3>What was a typical day like as an international student in Mexico?</h3>
<p class="p3">My day started around 7:00 a.m. with fresh breakfast prepared by the family. Following breakfast, I had a 20 minute walk to school and then classes that lasted from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. Following classes, we returned to the house for a large lunch that took place anywhere between 1 and 2 p.m. Mexicans have a slightly different schedule for eating than in America. Breakfast is usually around the same time, but lunch is the biggest meal of the day and is in the early afternoon. Dinner is later, around 9:00 p.m., and usually consists of a light snack. Following lunch, we had free time to do any home work, attend cultural activities sponsored by Sol Education Abroad, or simply free time to explore on our own.</p>
<h3>What advice would you give to other Texas A&amp;M students interested in studying in Mexico?</h3>
<p class="p3">Here in Texas we tend to have a very negative and one-sided view of Mexico. I would encourage any student looking to study abroad in a Spanish-speaking country to consider Mexico. Mexico is one of the most geographically and biologically diverse nations in the world with a dynamic culture and exciting history. <h3>How has studying abroad in Mexico impacted your life?</h3>
<p class="p3">I will be graduating from Texas A&amp;M in May of 2015 with the hopes of working abroad for a private or public company. My study abroad experience in Mexico gave me an advanced level of Spanish fluency and a broader base of knowledge of different cultures. I have no doubt that I will be able to use these experiences to make myself more competitive in my future job, and use the skills I have learned to perform at a higher level in the industry.</p>
<h3>Would you recommend SOL Education Abroad&rsquo;s program in Mexico to others?</h3>
<p class="p3">I would most definitely recommend Sol Education Abroad to anyone looking to maximize their study abroad experience at a great value. The whole staff and on-site program directors were very helpful and wanted me to get the best of my experience. The program had a great mix of university classes coupled with cultural activities that allowed me to gain a deeper knowledge of the Mexican history and culture.</p>
<h3>If you could go abroad again, where would you go?</h3>
<p class="p3">I would go abroad again in a heartbeat to any country in the world. Experiencing different cultures gives you thrill that you cannot have in the United States. The world is such a big, diverse place that you would be missing out&hellip;on well&hellip;the world if you just stay where you are.&nbsp;</p>

<h3>What are the top two reasons you studied abroad?<br></h3>
<p>I needed to work on my language skills and have an international experience for my CV.</p>
<h3>What made you select Mexico?</h3>
<p>I had been to Oaxaca in 2012 and loved it. The study abroad counselor at UCLA recommended the program if I was looking for a Spanish immersion program. I also trusted that if I were to do a homestay in Oaxaca, I’d like the food and hopefully like the people.</p>
<h3>Why did you choose Sol Education Abroad over other study abroad organizations?</h3>
<p>I called the office to ask a question and left a message. Less than five minutes later the owner called me back. I was sold. Brent was so sincere and I could feel his passion and love for the program. I knew it was for me.</p>
<h3>What were your housing arrangements like in Mexico?</h3>
<p>Phenomenal. I lived in two homestays (I was originally supposed to stay for the summer, but stayed six months, therefore, I had to move once). The first homestay was in an upscale neighborhood, la Colonia Reforma. The room was spacious and the accommodations were not much different than what I would have in the United States. The second homestay, I lived behind the main house, in a little dormitory the family constructed. Even though this one wasn’t very luxurious (small and simple, and limited hot water to bathe with), it was worth every minute. The family, who I still keep in touch with, are some of the kindest people I have ever met. I basically only slept in my living quarters, and spent the majority of my time in the main house studying or interacting with the family.</p>

<h3>What was a typical day like for you as a student in Mexico?</h3>
<p>I’d wake up, do my yoga practice or go to a yoga class at 7 a.m., go to school, come home to eat, go out for an activity, and then come back and do school work.</p>
<h3>What was the most memorable experience you had while studying in Mexico?</h3>
<p>Wow! That’s hard to say. A friend of a friend from UCLA, who is an anthropologist in Oaxaca, took me on field-work with her around Oaxaca…that was pretty incredible. She then took me to her <em>pueblo</em> in the <em>mixteca</em> for La Matanza de los Chivos (the killing of the goats). We feasted on goat in all its forms that weekend and it was delicious. Also, the <em>tianguis</em>, or weekly markets all over Oaxaca are unforgettable.&nbsp;</p>
<h3>What was the biggest challenge you faced in Mexico?</h3>
<p>At first, the hardest thing was communicating when I couldn’t speak more than 10 words of Spanish. At the end, it was fine tuning what I was saying and getting frustrated when I have an advanced level of Spanish but things are still not coming out with the fluency that I have in English, my native tongue.</p>

<p>Also, not having access to the academic resources like I do at UCLA, such as a world-class library, and having to really search for books (books are expensive and not widely available in Oaxaca, as opposed to Mexico City) for my bibliographies. However, it’s important to remember that this is specific to Oaxaca, and would be totally different in another part of Mexico, like the UNAM or Colmex in Mexico City, where I understand the academic facilities to be phenomenal.&nbsp;</p>
<p></p>
<h3>What advice would you give to other UCLA students interested in studying in Mexico?<br></h3>
<p>Don’t think twice about it. Do it.&nbsp;</p>
<h3>What are the top reasons you'd study abroad if you had the chance again?&nbsp;</h3>
<p>The academic and cultural experience. I went to Oaxaca to learn Spanish and have a profound cultural experience. The next time I go abroad, I want to go to an institution like the UNAM in Mexico City or USP in Brazil where I can be in an intellectual atmosphere comparable to UCLA, and focus on research.</p>
<h3>How has your study abroad experience impacted your life?&nbsp;</h3>
<p>I know that I am a Latin Americanist and have a fascination with the study of Mexico. Being in Oaxaca during the tragic events of Ayotzinapa helped me to realize I wanted to study the dirty wars and state sponsored violence in Latin America, particularly 1968 in Mexico. However, with Oaxaca’s relationship to the United States (from what I understand, the majority of Mexican immigrants are from Oaxaca), I began questioning the role of U.S. imperialism and the U.S. economy/funding in “military development,” like Kennedy’s <em>Alianza para el progreso</em>, in Latin America and how it may contribute to events such as 1968 or Ayotzinapa.</p>

<h3>Would you recommend Sol Education Abroad’s program in Oaxaca to others?&nbsp;</h3>
<p>Absolutely. Oaxaca, Mexico isn’t a typical study abroad destination, yet it was one of the most fulfilling experiences of my life. It’s safe, affordable, beautiful, and the food is incredible. As a social scientist, I found it to be a very rewarding place to study – I was living in the themes I study: social and economic stratification, subjugation of indigenous groups, racism, to name a few. I found it to be very inspiring and helpful to (1) take a thorough inventory of my life and (2) format future research questions.&nbsp;</p>
<h3>If you could travel again, where would you go first?&nbsp;</h3>
<p>I would love to go to Brazil and Argentina. I’d like to pursue a Ph.D. in Latin American History. In order to do so, I need top notch language skills, and I want to have the same level of Portuguese that I do with my Spanish. In addition, I’m interested in the study of Brazil, Mexico, and the southern cone, so I’d like to have a hands on experience in each of these countries.&nbsp;</p>
<h3>Did you ever feel culture shocked when you returned home?</h3>
<p>Yes, I think I am still experiencing it. At times, I speak Spanish when I mean to speak English. I feel like I am reevaluating my relationships too. I also seem to be rather pessimistic, as I feel that a lot of people have a misperception about Mexico and are unwilling to see beyond it.</p>
<h3>If you could go on another Sol Education Abroad program which one would you choose?</h3>
<p>I would choose Sol’s Buenos Aires, Argentina program. I’ve had a long standing interest in the southern cone, and I’m currently pursuing a project that might involve comparing state sponsored violence/terrorism, or the “dirty wars” in Mexico and the southern cone.&nbsp;</p>

<h3><strong>What made you decide to study abroad?</strong><br></h3>
<p><span style="font-size: 16px;">I chose to study abroad because I wanted to immerse myself in a language and culture completely different from my own. It is one thing to read about a culture, or study a language in a classroom, it is another to live the experience. Studying abroad was a perfect opportunity for me to round out my college education, and especially my study of the Spanish language.</span><br></p>
<h3><strong>What made you select Mexico?</strong><br></h3>
<p><span style="font-size: 16px;">I selected Mexico because I have a personal connection to the country through my heritage. My family is originally from Los Angeles, with my great grandparents emigrated from Mexico years ago. I wanted to understand a little more about my family and the culture and traditions they might have held. I believed it helped me understand my roots and role as an American today.</span><br></p>

<h3><strong>What about Sol Education Abroad’s program attracted you?</strong><br></h3>
<p><span style="font-size: 16px;">I specifically chose to travel with Sol Education Abroad because the program focused on Spanish-speaking countries exclusively. I am a Spanish minor and wanted to complete my course requirements while studying abroad, which I did. I particularly liked that the organization had such a passion for Spanish language and culture. I believe my experience and cultural immersion benefited from this passion.</span><br></p>
<h3><strong>What was your day like as a student in Mexico?</strong><br></h3>
<p><span style="font-size: 16px;">A typical day in Oaxaca, Mexico included the following:</span><br></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 16px;">1.   Head down to breakfast with my host family</span><br><span style="font-size: 16px;">2.   Get dressed and pack for school (remember the bug spray and sunscreen!)</span><br><span style="font-size: 16px;">3.   Walk to a local supermarket to meet other students before classes</span><br><span style="font-size: 16px;">4.   Walk several blocks to school</span><br><span style="font-size: 16px;">5.   Attend the first class (For me, this was a grammar class)</span><br><span style="font-size: 16px;">6.   Grab a quick snack during the break</span><br><span style="font-size: 16px;">7.   Attend the second class (For me, this was a civilizations class)</span><br><span style="font-size: 16px;">8.   Meet our intercambios after class (We practiced our Spanish while local students practiced English during this period)</span><br><span style="font-size: 16px;">9.   Walk home with other students and eat lunch with host family</span><br><span style="font-size: 16px;">10.  Rest before our afternoon activity with Sol</span> <br><span style="font-size: 16px;">11.  Participate in a variety of activities: tour a museum, take a dance class, attend cooking class, volunteer</span><br><span style="font-size: 16px;">12.  Return home and visit with other students and locals (possibly play a game of pick up soccer)</span><br><span style="font-size: 16px;">13.  Eat a light dinner with the host family</span><br><span style="font-size: 16px;">14.  Finally sleep after a long day</span></p>
<h3><strong>What was the biggest challenge you faced while studying abroad?</strong><br></h3>
<p><span style="font-size: 16px;">One of the biggest challenges I faced abroad was learning how to think and interact in Spanish on a regular basis. In class, it is very easy to switch into a Spanish mindset for one hour every other day. In Oaxaca however, many of the locals did not know English at all. I couldn’t revert to English when I couldn’t translate a word. I just had to hope someone had the patience to understand my broken Spanish! Although challenging, this experience was beneficial in the long run. I learned to care less about perfect grammar and learn more about fluidity in conversations in general.</span><br></p>

<h3><strong>What advice would you give to other Xavier students interested in studying in Mexico?</strong><br></h3>
<p><span style="font-size: 16px;">I would tell other Xavier students thinking about studying abroad in Mexico to research the country before you travel. Often times, Mexico is only mentioned in the news regarding drug trafficking and violence. While these are realities, this is not necessarily a countrywide problem. Just like there are dangerous places in the U.S., there are dangerous places in Mexico. However, the state department publishes a list travel advisories for states and cities in Mexico. Oaxaca, for example, has no advisory in effect. I never felt threatened or endangered while living there. I think that students should always consider these facts and know the benefits of safe traveling to a cultural destination like Mexico.</span><br></p>
<h3><strong>Would you recommend Sol Education Abroad’s Mexico program to other students? </strong><br></h3>
<p><span style="font-size: 16px;">I would definitely recommend Sol to other students. The program was very straightforward and excellently planned. I knew exactly what classes to take and easily transferred the credits once I returned. My weekend excursions and cultural activities were all enjoyable. The group size was not too large, allowing me to meet and make friends with all of the students. The overall price was affordable and the summer program worked perfectly into my schedule. The experience as a whole was truly memorable, something made possible by the staff from the planning stages to my final goodbyes in Mexico.</span> <br></p>
<h3><strong>If you could go on another Sol program which one would you choose? </strong><br></h3>
<p><span style="font-size: 16px;">If I went on another Sol Education Abroad program, I would choose Spain. I have yet to travel to this country and am interested in its rich history and Arabic influences. Of course, I would love to see the beaches, try the food, and attend a Flamenco dance or two as well. If I had the time or the funds, I would definitely enjoy traveling there with Sol!</span><br></p>

<p><br></p><h3><b>Why did you decide to study abroad?</b></h3>
<p>I saw in study abroad the opportunity to challenge myself with lots of unknowns, to explore another place and culture, and to immerse myself in experiential learning. I felt passionate about heading to Latin America because of the opportunity to develop my Spanish. In short, the first time I studied abroad was so transformative that I decided to do it again!</p>
<h3><b>Why did you choose this semester program?</b></h3>
<p>I was first drawn to CGE Mexico: Gender and Social Change because of the course listings. They seemed to perfectly merge my academic passions for religious studies, social justice, gender, and social movements. There aren&rsquo;t a lot of women&rsquo;s and gender studies study abroad programs in the Global South, and this one seemed to be the most relevant and exciting. I also saw in CGE Mexico the chance to dive deep into a few places instead of moving around all the time, and to really get to know the local scene. To top it off, I saw the opportunity to engage in a meaningful internship opportunity around issues of justice and jumped at it! &nbsp;</p>
<h3><b>What makes the program you participated in so interesting?</b></h3>
<p>As part of the program, we heard numerous firsthand testimonies from local leaders on immigration issues, indigenous issues, sustainable agriculture, religion, feminism, economic issues, and more. The chance to hear such amazing and life-changing stories about people&rsquo;s experiences was really special, and not something most study abroad programs prioritize.&nbsp;</p>
<h3><b>What is the best thing about your program that future participants need to know?</b></h3>
<p>The faculty and staff are simply outstanding. The professors were completely dedicated to the learning of their students, and also took the time to get to know us on a personal level. Each class was challenging, personalized to our specific interests, and required us to reflect on what the material meant for us personally, too. Simply put, the classes were among the best I&rsquo;ve taken in my college career, and I go to a school that has great classes and prides itself on teaching.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Additionally, the faculty and staff were really supportive of the non-academic priorities I had (doing more homestays, attending Jewish services), and went totally above and beyond to make this experience amazing and accommodating for me. Participants should also know that this program works hard to make homestays and other experiences LGBTQ-friendly!</p>
<h3><b>What&rsquo;s one thing you would have done differently?</b></h3>
<p>Couldn&rsquo;t think of anything.</p>
<h3><b>Now that you&rsquo;re home, how has study abroad impacted your life?</b></h3>
<p>The coursework that I did in this program actually had a huge impact on what I ended up studying for the rest of college, and made a big mark on my senior thesis. In this way, it really enriched my academic life, and made me passionate about liberation theologies and the intersection of religion and social justice. Otherwise, it made me rethink my assumptions about world politics and economics in a pretty radical way. It also fueled my desire to go back to Latin America, which I did pretty much the first chance I got after returning!&nbsp;</p>

<p><br></p><h3><b>Why did you decide to study abroad?</b></h3>
<p>I decided to study abroad because I have heard so many stories from my grandpa, aunt, and uncle about their experiences and wanted to have my own adventures. When visiting Augsburg when I was a senior in high school I knew that I wanted to venture out of our country. Whether it be in high school, or college, meeting students who were studying abroad and hearing their stories encouraged me, and drove me to learning more about how I could study abroad.</p>
<h3><b>Why did you choose Crossing Borders: Gender and Social Change program?</b></h3>
<p>I chose the Center for Global education program to Cuernavaca, because I have heard nothing but great experiences from this program. I have studied Spanish since I was in first grade, and learned that the location of this program was going to be in the mecca of Mexican art, and close to the home of Frida Kahlo &ndash; I had to sign up. The weather and climate was also a contributing factor.</p>
<h3><b>What makes the program you participated in so interesting?</b></h3>
<p>I think what makes the program so interesting is that I felt like I was constantly learning inside the classroom and out. It wasn&rsquo;t like we weren&rsquo;t just reading out of textbooks, we were hearing the stories directly from the people, or going to the place we were learning about and seeing it such as a mural or pyramid etc. I loved that when we heard speakers they were from different perspectives so we were able to get both sides, and were able to form our own opinions and truly change how we think which made this program special.</p>
<h3><b>What is the best thing about your program that future participants need to know?</b></h3>
<p>I think what future participants need to know about this program is that this truly is a very important, special, learning experience that they are going to have and to enjoy every second of it; the good and the bad. I also think its important for students to realize the importance of their presence.</p>
<h3><b>What&rsquo;s one thing you would have done differently?</b></h3>
<p>One thing that I would have done differently is studied abroad for a longer period of time. I would have also liked to have explored Mexico City more, because there is so much to see and do you need some time just to see the main street Paseo de la Reforma and the Z&oacute;calo. I have never seen so many museums in one weekend.</p>
<h3><b>Now that you&rsquo;re home, how has study abroad impacted your life?</b></h3>
<p>Studying abroad has impacted my life a lot. Everyday the way I think, I know is different than before my experience. There are things that people around me say and I challenge it from my experience. I find myself wanting to practice and keep up my Spanish with friends and new friends. I also catch myself watching the Spanish channel, and Mexican and Spanish films pretty often. I would have to say that from my experience my diet has changed, I no longer like American food as much and always crave tacos al pastor, or tinga. I can&rsquo;t wait to return to Cuernavaca!</p>

<p><br></p><h3><b>Why did you decide to study abroad?</b></h3>
<p>I wanted to study abroad because I had previous experience traveling with my family and knew from those trips that I grow a lot through travel. I figured that studying abroad would magnify this growth, as I would not just be visiting a place as a tourist, but truly living in a place and learning more about what life is like for the people there.</p>
<h3><b>Why did you choose the Mexico CGE programs?</b></h3>
<p><b></b>I was a social work major interested in working with Spanish speakers in the future, so studying social work in Mexico through CGE was clearly a perfect fit! <b></b></p>
<h3><b>What made your program so interesting?</b></h3>
<p><b></b>The social work program in Mexico through CGE made everything personal. For every classroom lesson it seemed, we had the opportunity to listen to a firsthand account of someone who had experienced whatever we were learning about. This made the information stick. I will always remember what I learned in Mexico, about Mexico, the experience of Mexican people, and about my own country and myself. <b></b></p>
<h3><b>What is the best thing about your program that future participants need to know?</b></h3>
<p>The best thing about the program I participated in was probably the homestay. It was such a unique opportunity to form relationships with people I would not have had the chance to meet otherwise. It provided a very real and personal look into Mexican culture and, for the first time, allowed me to feel like I was truly participating in it. <b></b></p>
<h3><b>Now that you&rsquo;re home, how has study abroad impacted your life?</b></h3>
<p><b></b>Now that I am home, I am much more globally aware. I try to keep informed about what is going on in Mexico, and all over the world. I read the news differently, keeping in mind the perspective of the news source instead of just accepting everything it is saying as truth. I have a different view of my own country as well. There are things about the United States that I feel a lot of anger and shame about, such as NAFTA. Then there are other things about my country that I have a new appreciation for, like the relative safety of even large cities here.</p>
<p>Overall, I think my experience in Mexico has opened my eyes to a more accurate vision of what the world is like, and what my role should be in standing in solidarity with those who are struggling to make a good life in this world.</p>

<p><br></p><h3><b>Why did you decide to study abroad?</b></h3>
<p><b></b>When I moved to Minneapolis, I was having a difficult time getting to know other people and fitting in. I&rsquo;ve always had an adventurous spirit, and I decided that studying abroad would give me an opportunity to meet amazing individuals (which I did). I also grew up in a rather close-minded environment, where my eyes were never opened to real world issues of racism and discrimination. When I moved away from home, I realized that I was raised to believe that all the people of the U.S. have equal rights. Studying abroad forced me to see the reality of not only our situation in the U.S., but also in countries around the world.</p>
<h3><b>Why did you choose your programs?</b></h3>
<p><b></b>I have done two semester programs through CGE Mexico: Crossing Borders and Migration &amp; Globalization. As a Cross-cultural Studies major, I don&rsquo;t believe a better study abroad program exists that would fulfill my search for connections and interactions between cultures, since I lived the experience every day.&nbsp;Like all CGE programs, all of my learning was experiential, which is how I thrive best as a student. Rather than sitting through endless lectures and reading out of textbooks, we became involved within the community of Cuernavaca. We spoke with activists and people involved with LGBTIAQ, the environment, women&rsquo;s rights, peace workers, politics, religion, and economics. Not only did I gain knowledge about Mexico, but also an entirely new understanding of my own culture.Before doing my academic year in Cuernavaca, I got to trek Mexican mountains for 11 days with CGE on a travel seminar! There will be other mountain treks &ndash; look out for them!</p>
<h3><b>What makes the program you participated in so interesting?</b></h3>
<p><b></b>In both Crossing Borders and Migration &amp; Globalization, I faced challenges and obstacles unlike any others. Although Mexico is the neighbor to the U.S., it is a different world completely. It was difficult to face hard truths about the politics and economic strategies of the U.S., which affect far more countries in the world that just our own. However, I would not exchange the experience for any other, and I now feel well-informed about my own country&rsquo;s strategies and the consequences that they bring. Above all, the professors, students, and community of CGE are what made the experience incredible.</p>
<h3><b>What is the best thing about your program that future participants need to know?</b></h3>
<p><b></b>Students should know that doing a program with CGE will change your life completely (in the best way possible, in my case). Your view of the world will change, but this will open up the chance to meet amazing people and get involved in a caring and passionate community. It sounds so cheesy, but if you come in with an open mind and an open heart, only the most beautiful things can happen.</p>
<h3><b>What&rsquo;s one thing you would have done differently?</b></h3>
<p><b></b>Honestly, this is a difficult question, because there isn&rsquo;t one thing I regret or one experience that I would take back. It took some time getting into the groove of being social and involved here in Cuernavaca. I would recommend that students reach out and explore as much as they can and as quickly as possible. CGE is great about providing resources and information for students to get involved in the community.</p>
<h3><b>Now that you&rsquo;re home, how has study abroad impacted your life?</b></h3>
<p><b></b>I fell in love so much with Mexico and CGE that I haven&rsquo;t gone home yet! A CGE travel seminar encouraged me to sign up for a semester in Mexico, which led to a full academic year abroad, which led to a once-in-a-lifetime internship opportunity! I will be deeply saddened when my time comes to return home at the end of the summer. I know that reintegration in the U.S. will be a great challenge, due to the fact that my life has changed immensely, while the lives of my friends and family have gone on changing while I have been abroad. However, I plan on sharing my experiences with every opportunity I get, and will recommend CGE Mexico to any person who is looking for an unforgettable adventure!</p>
