Istituto Lorenzo de' Medici invites you to study abroad in Tuscania, a hilltop town located in the Lazio region of central Italy, part of the breathtaking countryside of the Maremma coastlands! Ancient Etruscan ruins are surrounded by cultivated fields, abundant orchards, rows of olive trees, lush vineyards, and fragrant fields of lavender – unforgettable scenery that offers ever-changing charm. LdM Tuscania is often described as a warm campus where students easily get to know one another as well as the faculty and staff. All classrooms and student facilities are housed in one large building nestled inside medieval walls that encircle the tranquil town. Owing to Tuscania’s smaller size and its unique geography, students can live and study in a typical Italian environment while interacting closely with the local community. LdM students are able to maximize study-life balance because Tuscania makes the perfect base for a great range of cultural and outdoor recreational activities. LdM's curriculum and courses are orchestrated to embrace the historical, artistic, and cultural heritage that is wholly unique to Tuscania and the surrounding region.

API offers wonderful opportunities to take a gap semester or year, study or intern abroad in Italy, or take a virtual course and learn about and absorb the Italian culture and way of life. Italy is one of the most complex and alluring destinations in Europe. A modern, industrialized nation with an artistic and architectural legacy that few other countries can rival. It is also a Mediterranean country with a southern European sensibility, where traditional attitudes still prevail. Thriving small businesses contribute to strong, regional identities, helping Italy avoid some of the bland effects of globalization. For students who want one of the most unique study abroad experiences in Italy, check out the Two Italies Program in Florence and Tuscania. You'll take classes in these two fascinating Italian cities – getting the best of both worlds! Explore this program on our website or contact us for more details.

Based in Tuscany, students have access to a remarkable range of ecosystems, from the coastal lagoons of Maremma to the high pastures of the Apennines. Survey biodiversity, meet with farmers and fishers, or trace how centuries-old practices adapt to today’s environmental and economic pressures—all within one of the world’s most celebrated regions. Stone terraces, chestnut groves, and coastal lagoons form a living tapestry where food, culture, and ecology are inseparable. Students kneel in vineyards to survey pollinators, track wolves along ridgelines, and study soil and water management in citrus groves, while working with cooperatives adapting to climate shifts and global markets. Students collaborate with local cooperatives during harvest season, gaining insight into sustainable food systems and agricultural practices. Yet across rural Italy, fields are abandoned even as predators reclaim old ranges and traditions strain to survive. The tension is vivid, but so too are models of renewal.
