I had a unique and entertaining experience
March 19, 2026by: Carson Smith - United StatesAltogether, I had a great time. We got to see so much and I believe the pacing of the program was great, spending the right amount of time at each location. La Fortuna was my favorite! Traveling in a large group brought up trouble with waiting on students, health issues, etc. but I still think they were able to make the most of it. Having a flexible schedule and being open to adjustments definitely helps. Our guide Rodrigo and our bus drivers were the best!

Costa Rica
March 19, 2026by: James Paquette - United StatesI really enjoyed this experience. My review is based off of a free trip less expenses such as food and transportation, as I received scholarships for this course. I do know that many students paid upwards of $7,000 on this study abroad trip, which I do find to be a bit much. Considering we were staying in $80 / night hotels with non-working lights, mediocre amenities, and bad air conditioning and bedding coupled with the scarcity of included meals, the figure should have been more around $3,000 without airfare cost. I do not understand how the cost was so high for what was received. I also found living in the dorms with random Costa Rican people to be fun, but a bit restrictive. The morning meals were literally eggs, a piece of bread, and really bad coffee. I was also staying in a really small bunk bed which was uncomfortable. Staying in an affordable hotel would have been better. Next time I recommend the school book out Ester’s Place which is closer to the tech campus and run by a lovely lady who has many rooms available in her home hotel. She also had a much better breakfast and the cost was only $65 / night per person. I stayed here my first night flying in on the 12th and wish I could have gone back but due to restrictions I was not allowed. My family of four at the time in 2019 went on an all inclusive cruise to Italy, Spain, and France for under $10,000 with included meals, drinks , stay, etc. So this trip being $7,000 + for just ONE PERSON is a bit crazy. Regardless, the activities were awesome and for me, price was not an issue as stated before. So, my review without price factored was it was amazing. Great tour guide Rodrigo was so knowledgeable and a very nice guy. He took us to authentic places and not just generic touristy places. I enjoyed seeing the stark contrast in sustainability initiatives between exotic resorts, quasi-governmental organizations, and design firms. I truly did get a wonderful experience with understanding how firms work and the metric process used to gather sustainability info, as well as how to tell if a company may be kind of BS-ing the situation with their sustainability initiatives, or holding themselves accountable. I loved the zip line tour and the coffee and cocoa bean tour. The history tours around the towns was cool, but truly was not necessary. I feel we could have just had an informational PDF sent to us instead of touring these relatively boring historical landmarks. Activities are always more fun than learning about history. I think it would have been much more effective to fly into Liberia, tour the beach and Penninsula Papagayo’s HOA office, then make our way back to San Jose and visit firms, then fly out of SJO. The amount of time driving was frustrating. Or, instead, we would just fly into SJO and tour the Caribbean side of things and skip the western side of Costa Rica altogether. This way the time could be allocated more effectively. I also wish the professors would have split us into groups so we could have gotten to know everyone. There were certain folks I never really got to have conversations with because the groups would naturally clique and we never had forced exposure to each other. Overall it was a wonderful trip and, with a few adjustments I know the next one will be awesome as well!

March 19, 2026by: Ella Gielstra - United StatesComing to TTU Costa Rica was an amazing experience and allowed me to try lots of new and unique things. Rodrigo was the absolute best and the entire trip wouldn't have been half as great and smooth without him! Gonna miss him back in the states, thank you so much for an amazing time!
Pros and cons
August 04, 2023by: Molly WilkinsonI had a lovely time here, although it was not without flaws. The amenities were not great especially considering how much we paid to be here. The company guilt tripped and body shamed us. But I made innumerable new friends and had experiences that I will cherish forever.
Study abroad!
August 04, 2023by: NancyVery nice experience, learned a lot. People I’ve met here are now friends I will still be in contact with. The internship was where I learned new skills and networked with people within the fashion industry and got inspired by being here abroad
A great time
April 20, 2018by: Anonymous - United StatesEveryone needs to go abroad. It is awesome experiencing so many cultures. Professors while abroad are very helpful and care about their students. I really enjoyed getting to know my professors and learning not only class content but also from their real life experiences. Traveling on the weekends was obviously my favorite part of this experience. I was able to visit a bunch of different countries. Wish I could stay longer.
First time in Europe was a success!
April 19, 2018by: Kathryn - United StatesBy getting outside of my comfort zone as much as possible, I was able to experience parts of the world while figuring out new things about myself! Staying in a home stay is completely worth it because you get to practice your Spanish and meet incredibly interesting locals!
Life-changing
April 19, 2018by: pinkpanther22 - United StatesLiving in Spain was such a great experience! From the food to culture and things to do, Spain has it all. I´m definitely going to miss my time here and all the great people I met. Studying abroad helped me grow so much as a person, and I won´t ever forget this experience.
Self -reflection
April 17, 2018by: Isabel Navarro-Laurent - United StatesThis experience allowed me to reflect on the type of person I am, what I like and what I do not like, and really step out of my comfort zone. Studying abroad has allowed me to develop critical values that are important for everyday life. I have always believed that one of the best ways to erase ignorance is by traveling and my experience here has proved that.
Aidan´s trip
April 19, 2017by: Aidan - United StatesI had a great time with AIFS. I was able to travel all over Europe and meet many new friends. I would not really change anything other than I wish it could be longer. I liked how easy it was to get in contact with the AIFS office to solve any problems I might have had. Classes here were not as hard as back home but I found myself learning more and enjoying the work I was doing.
Life changing experience
April 18, 2017by: Anonymous - SpainThis semester truly changed my life in a positive way. It changed the way I look at the world, other people and cultures, daily life, and even myself. I would highly recommend to everyone thinking about it!
Abroad experience
November 28, 2016by: Pandora - United StatesHad a wonderful time! Staff went above and beyond to be sure each student had a safe and comfortable experience, and provided many cultural activities without making students feel like they had to participate. Housing situation was great- my apartment, as well as those of all the other students that I saw, was spacious, clean, modern and well decorated. Roommate situation was also great! Overall really great time and good balance of school work and fun.
Excellent, incredibly memorable semester
April 11, 2016by: Courtney - SpainThis semester was such a valuable life lesson for me about the true value of building friendships, adjusting and being willing to adapt to changing and foreign circumstances as well as how capable I am to grow and learn everyday. I loved my program with my classes, my professors and my fellow peers. I met so many wonderful people and am really going to miss seeing everybody each day
Adventure
April 11, 2016by: Anonymous - United StatesI traveled a lot in Europe and had a great time. Met many amazing people and experienced a whole new culture. I learned to appreciate America more, because the lifestyle here is very different. I did enjoy Spain a lot. When I traveled to other countries in Europe, it made me love Barcelona even more and grateful that I studied here. Unfortunately, I do not think the academics were the best. Some of the teachers were not very nice and expect you to know the spanish language perfectly. The program leaders were very helpful. I had to go to the dentist and Inma was awesome! The soccer team I joined was so much fun and my roommates were very cool.
Great AIFS
December 02, 2015by: NGO HNA - Rochester, NYFirst of all, I cannot wait to say how AIFS and the stuff did a great job through this fall semester, including the activities that we all do together and extral help that I needed. I donot know what else i might say to do better, becuase they are taking care of us morethan any one that can discribe it. Also, I do not thing I can measure how much i have fun this years, Every thing that we have done is more than worthy. Finally, I would like to say thank you so much for taking care of me, I would not never forget your kindess.
Best Time of my Life
December 02, 2015by: Kaitlin - Jacksonville, FloridaI've meet so many people from all over the place. It is definitely the best time I have ever had and I'm extremely thankful for the experience. I will always have a special connection with the people that I have studied abroad with in this program.
Great!
December 02, 2015by: California - Irvine, CAI had a great time spending a semester in Barcelona. It really showed me how different the world is, but no only just how different countries were, but people from the different states who attended the program along with me. AIFS was great at planning and showing us different parts of Barcelona as well. We had many group dinners and city tours which helped expose us to parts of Barcelona that we might not have experienced othewise.
Amazing Experience
December 02, 2015by: ST - Brainerd, MinnesotaThis experience has been unlike any other. It´s better than I ever expected and I loved meeting new people here. The program was small enough to get to know everyone but large enough to not get ¨stuck¨ with people. The program was so friendly and truly cared about their students here. Inma and Jenn would take the students to the doctors office if they were sick and wait until the checkup was done.
AIFS 2015
December 02, 2015by: Student - BaltimoreI had an amazing time studying abroad! the classes were great! the only complaint I have about the apartment is that our wifi was bad. I wish we had met some more Spanish people, but since all of our classes were mainly americans that was hard. Overall though, it was a great experience :)
