Niterói is a community of 500,000 people across the bay from Rio de Janeiro. The ease of travel across to Rio, with the calmer pace of Niterói, makes this city an ideal choice for students wishing to immerse themselves in local Brazilian culture while simultaneously enjoying proximity to one of the world's most passionate and festive cities. The Middlebury - C.V. Starr Schools Abroad are characterized by a commitment to language development. Students sign and honor the Language Pledge, promising to speak only the target language during their time abroad. Those at an advanced level of Portuguese come away from the program with superior language skills and the knowledge gained from an authentic study abroad experience. While in Niterói, students enroll at the Universidade Federal Fluminense, where they have the opportunity to experience firsthand the life of Brazilian students. They will live in a homestay, allowing access to the life of a local family.
