Winter Study Abroad Programs in Australia

Don’t let this English-speaking nation fool you—Australia is different than any place you’ve ever visited. Years of isolation before its relatively recent settlement has allowed for vast, untouched landscapes and unique, exotic critters to thrive. Wake up to kangaroos outside your window, cuddle a koala, or spot a wiggly wombat in the grass. Meanwhile, a whole other, uniquely Aussie version of English may even stump the native speaker. Head down under to study abroad in Australia for winter to escape the cold and dreary days and enjoy a second summer!

A Guide to Winter Study Abroad in Australia

Best Locations

In the southern hemisphere, the farther north you head, the warmer it gets. Sounds perfect for winter study abroad programs in Australia!

Melbourne is famous for its “four seasons in one day”, so prepare your wardrobe accordingly! Australia’s second-largest city is home to many world-renowned universities. You’ll find many students holed up in the National Library of Victoria or taking a break across the street at the Melbourne Central shopping mall.

Sydney, the most populous city in Australia, is well known for its perfect year-round weather. With its lively oceanfront suburbs and easy beach access from the center, you’ll find Sydneysiders out catching a wave year-round. Check out Bondi Beach where locals and visitors alike relax and cool off, but be careful out there, or you may just end up on the famous Aussie TV series, Bondi Rescue

The Gold Coast in Queensland can have some scorching summer days, so you’ll probably spend most of your time hanging out at its breezy beaches. The glitzy skyscrapers, casinos, and shopping malls may just remind you of another high-roller destination. Its proximity to Queensland’s capital, Brisbane, means you get two cities for the price of one!

Studying in beautiful Barcelona :)

Studying in Barcelona had been a dream! I took classes in Entrepreneurship and New Venture Creation, and Spanish Art and Cultural Heritage at Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. My 7 weeks in that paradise were filled with exploration, inspiration, and so much fun. From amazing people to the delicious cuisine, and stunning architecture to the colorful culture, Spain should be at the top of the must-visit countries list. My favorite activity, besides spending my day at the beach, was wandering around the city without a map and being amazed by the beauty hidden in every corner of Barcelona. Thanks to the Spanish Art and Cultural Heritage class, I learned even more about this impressive history and culture. CIS helped me through every step of adapting to studying and living in Barcelona. They planned fun events for us, such as various tours in famous parts of Barcelona, beach picnic and volleyball, wine tasting, tours to towns in Spain, and cooking classes. I stayed at Aparto Pallars, which is conveniently located near the metro station, from which you can take the metro anywhere. I'm so grateful for this experience, and I'm definitely willing to go back to Barcelona or any other program with CIS!
