Study Abroad Programs in Yerevan, Armenia

One of the oldest cities in the world, Armenia’s capital of Yerevan has endured for thousands of years as a political, economic, and cultural hub of the Caucasus region. Most recently undergoing a major infrastructural and academic facelift since the fall of the Soviet Union at the end of the 20th century, Yerevan is becoming an increasingly enticing destination for international students from all over the world to bring their studies. Embarking to study abroad in Yerevan will be an enriching educational adventure in one of the world’s greatest, if too often overlooked, ancient cities.

Yerevan: Russian Language Intensive

This 6-week intensive Russian language program is designed for students at the A2–B2 proficiency range (Intermediate Low through Advanced Mid). Study in Armenia’s culturally and historically rich capital, Yerevan, where Russian is widely spoken and there are opportunities to connect with both the deep traditions and dynamic contemporary life of the region. The program is structured to cover the equivalent of at least one academic semester of university-level study, with all courses providing proficiency-oriented instruction in speaking, listening, reading, and writing, and with a particular emphasis on oral communication. It meets all FLAS requirements for this level. Participants will commit to using only Russian in classes, program activities, clubs, and interactions with peers, creating a full immersion environment. Instruction combines daily language classes with weekly lectures in Russian on topics ranging from art and history to politics and popular culture, as well as a weekly phonetics workshop designed to better master pronunciation and improve fluency.

A Guide to Studying Abroad in Yerevan

Subjects & Courses

Yerevan boasts some 56 universities, both public and private, within its growing metropolitan area. International students can look into enrolling full time at any one of these local institutions while they study abroad in Yerevan, though the language barrier can often prove a difficult boundary to students not adept in Armenian or Russian. Still, there remain a handful of private international schools in the city where English taught courses are commonly available as well.

If you enroll full-time at a local university while you study abroad in Yerevan, then you will usually have the benefit of choosing from a comprehensive course catalogue. While international students will thus largely have the liberty to design their own curriculum, some of the most popularly pursued subjects abroad in Yerevan tend to include history, geography, international relations, language studies, and Russian studies.

Some domestic universities and study abroad programs lay claim to their own satellite schools in Yerevan as well, giving international students the opportunity to enroll in introductory courses that are taught by local faculty and specifically tailored for study abroad. Study abroad programs in Yerevan are offered throughout the year, wherein students can choose to enroll for a summer session, fall or spring semester, or full academic year.
