Gets a foot in the door but not the right door
September 09, 2022by: Marianna Redmond-LyonProgram: XploreAsia TESOL/TEFL in Chiang Mai, ThailandThe orientation week was good to meet new people who are going through the same thing but I feel I was not prepared properly for teaching at all. I also feel like we were forced into jobs we didn't want to do as they said this is the only option. It's good if you are desperate but we found a job so much easier ourselves in Chiang Mai, (where Xplore Asia said there's not chance of getting any job there) and we enjoyed ourselves so much more and felt like the schools were more supportive too! So good for meeting people but that's it.
Hi, Marianna, thank you for your feedback, we do appreciate it. To address your comments, we certainly hear you on not feeling prepared to teach. This is something that we have been thinking about a lot recently, so much so that for all of our participants that opt to not go through our TESOL training, like yourself, we are now adding a practical teaching session during the orientation week. While we continue to stress that a full training course is the best way to prepare for teaching, we still want to give as much as we can to all of our participants. Regarding placement, it really is dictated by the schools/employers within our network that are actively hiring at the time. During your time in Hua Hin, we didn't have any schools in Chiang Mai that were actively hiring. Of course, there are schools in Chiang Mai that are hiring, but are not vetted by us, and not within our trusted network. This is by no means a failing on our part, we cannot have every school across the country, but we continue to actively grow our school network of 300+ schools across the country. I have looked through our correspondence and I can see that there were a few bumps in the road at your initial school before you decided to move on to Chiang Mai. I can see that we were responsive and willing to talk through it and support. If you would be able to offer us further feedback on how we could've improved our support during that time, please do not hesitate to reach out to me directly, I would be grateful - [email protected]
Xplore(d)Asia and made friends for life!
October 13, 2018by: Nina DiFranco - United StatesProgram: XploreAsia TESOL/TEFL in Chiang Mai, ThailandI did the TESOL Course in Chiang Mai in October 2015, so a while back now. But my friends from my TESOL course are still some of my closest friends and that wouldn't of happened without Xplore Asia. Living in Chiang Mai was the absolute best and I loved our TESOL instructor! XploreAsia provides a lot of materials and outside resources that aren't available through other providers. Plus in the event of a problem, XploreAsia is a phone call or email away to trouble shoot and help navigate problems. This program is great for people who want XploreAsia to take care of all the details. As long as you are comfortable letting XploreAsia take control, you will have a great time. The TESOL course definitely set you up to get better teaching jobs in the future. I used my TESOL course for the next 3.5 years teaching English in both Thailand and Taiwan. My TESOL and work experience helped me get better paying jobs. Last but not least, as an alumni, XploreAsia, and specifically the director Michael Volpe, have been incredibly supportive in my future endeavors.
You get out what you put in
September 27, 2018by: Piper Traywick - United StatesProgram: XploreAsia TESOL/TEFL in Chiang Mai, ThailandI had a great experience with Xplore Asia, but so much of that depends on how flexible you're willing to be. There are changes and adjustments that come with living in a different culture, and the more open you are the better your experience will be. I wouldn't change anything about my time in Thailand, even the parts that were confusing and unclear. Roll with it and everything will work out!

From a very young age, I was encouraged to travel. With both my parents as freelancers in the South African film industry, they were always in a different location for the movie they were working on at the time. From the age of three, I have been traveling around my country with my family, seeing all sorts of little nooks and crannies you wouldn't be able to find on a map.

I wanted to travel, help students who would be excited about the opportunities learning English would afford them, and figure out if I wanted to make teaching my career.
