Sponsored by the United States Department of State, the National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y) is a program that offers merit-based scholarships to qualified American students still in high school or have recently graduated from high school. The funding allows them to enroll in less commonly taught languages: Turkish, Russian, Korean, Hindi, Mandarin, and others. They sign up for academic year or summer abroad immersion
programs in Turkey, Russia, Korea, India, China, and other countries.
As part of a government initiative, we aim to prepare American youth to be global leaders. This comes from the necessity to have broad cultural knowledge and linguistic skills, making them capable of promoting international dialogue as well as supporting engagement with other nationalities abroad. We hope to cultivate in them a fascination with foreign culture and languages, encouraging them to join overseas programs to support this interest.
