More Than a School, a Second Home

My experience at Instituto Hemingway was truly unforgettable. The classes were not only effective but also fun and engaging, thanks to teachers who are incredibly patient and supportive. They take the time to make sure everyone understands, creating a relaxed and motivating atmosphere. What makes this place special is the feeling that the whole school is one big team—a kind of family where you instantly feel at home. You’re not just learning Spanish, you’re starting a new chapter, meeting people, and growing every day. I also loved living in a shared flat with people my age, which made everything more social and natural. Being able to walk to school was super convenient, and the cultural activities added so much to the experience. The school is also fully inclusive, welcoming everyone with open arms. And the city? Simply amazing—vibrant, beautiful, and full of life. I’d recommend it to anyone.

If you're thinking about learning Spanish abroad, I honestly couldn’t recommend Instituto Hemingway more. From day one, everything just clicked. The classes are dynamic and fun, and the teachers are incredibly kind, patient, and genuinely passionate about helping you improve. But what really made the experience unforgettable was the lifestyle around it. I stayed in an amazing shared flat with people my age, which made it super easy to connect, hang out, and practice Spanish outside the classroom. Plus, being able to walk to school every day? Huge bonus. On top of that, the cultural activities were next level — always something exciting going on, from local events to group outings. It never felt like just a course; it felt like a full experience. And the city? Absolutely top-tier. Beautiful, vibrant, and full of life. I’d go back in a heartbeat. 10/10 recommend if you want to learn Spanish and actually live it.

As a former student of Instituto Hemingway, my personal experience was very positive and rewarding. The teaching method was practical and focused on real-life communication, which helped me gain confidence in speaking Spanish much faster than I expected. The teachers were professional, patient, and always encouraging, creating a comfortable learning environment. What I appreciated the most was the cultural immersion. Beyond the classroom, the institute organized activities that allowed me to practice Spanish while discovering local traditions and meeting people from different countries. This made the experience much more dynamic and meaningful. Overall, I believe it is an excellent option for anyone who wants not only to learn Spanish but also to live the language in an authentic and engaging way.

Healing Through Creativity: My Art Therapy Volunteering Experience

February 19, 2026by: Mary Flowers - United States

Program: Volunteer Programs in Spain

5

Volunteering in the Art Therapy program at Instituto Hemingway was one of the most meaningful experiences of my time in Spain. From the very beginning, I felt welcomed into a supportive, professional environment where creativity was truly valued as a tool for connection and healing. The program allowed me to work alongside dedicated coordinators and inspiring participants from diverse backgrounds. Each session offered a safe space for self-expression through painting, drawing, and creative activities. It was incredible to see how art helped people communicate emotions they couldn’t always put into words. Even simple exercises often led to powerful moments of reflection, laughter, and personal growth. What I appreciated most was the human side of the project. The focus was not on artistic skill, but on the process itself — exploring feelings, building confidence, and strengthening social bonds. I learned how art therapy can support emotional wellbeing, reduce stress, and encourage mindfulness in a natural, accessible way. Every participant was respected, listened to, and encouraged at their own pace. The team provided clear guidance while also giving volunteers space to contribute ideas and interact directly with participants. This balance made the experience both educational and empowering. I developed new communication skills, deepened my empathy, and gained practical insight into how creative therapies are used in real community settings. Beyond the sessions themselves, the volunteering experience helped me connect with local culture and people in a very authentic way. It was deeply rewarding to feel useful, to share time with others, and to witness small but meaningful changes week after week. Each day reminded me that creativity can be a bridge between people, cultures, and emotions. I would highly recommend this Art Therapy volunteering program to anyone looking for a purposeful experience abroad. It combines learning, service, and personal growth in a unique way. I left with unforgettable memories, valuable skills, and a renewed appreciation for the power of art to heal, inspire, and bring people together.

Volunteering at a wildlife rescue changed me forever. Caring for animals once victims of trafficking—feeding them, cleaning their spaces, walking and comforting them—taught me empathy in its purest form. From parrots to foxes, each creature had a story of survival. Helping rebuild their habitats helped me rebuild a part of myself too. It was not just service—it was transformation.

Colors of Healing: Empowering Lives Through Art and Emotion

October 08, 2025by: Lucy Chulapova - United States

Program: Volunteer Programs in Spain

5

Last year, I took part in an inspiring art therapy volunteer program that completely changed the way I see creativity and healing. The project focused on helping patients express their emotions through painting. Every day, I worked alongside therapists and volunteers, guiding participants to use colors, shapes, and textures to tell their personal stories. It was incredible to see how art became a safe space for people to communicate feelings that words couldn’t express. Over time, the participants grew more confident and proud of their creations. What made the experience even more meaningful was that their artwork was later exhibited and sold, allowing them to share their voices with the community and raise funds for future sessions. I felt deeply fulfilled knowing I was part of something that brought hope, beauty, and empowerment to others. Beyond improving my artistic and interpersonal skills, the experience taught me that art can truly heal and connect us all.

Last summer, I joined a fantastic volunteer program in the north of Spain, and it turned out to be one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. I met wonderful new friends from different countries, and together we worked hard cleaning beaches and collecting litter along the coast. It felt amazing to be useful and contribute to protecting the environment while surrounded by stunning landscapes. In the afternoons, we took part in cultural activities organized by the school — cooking classes, dance workshops, and local festivals. Every day, my Spanish improved as I practiced with locals and other volunteers. It was the perfect mix of helping others, learning, and having fun.

Making a Difference: Volunteering for Beach Cleanups in Northern Spain

September 20, 2025by: John Green - Netherlands

Program: Volunteer Programs in Spain

Volunteering for beach cleanups along the northern coast of Spain was an inspiring and eye-opening experience. Working side by side with people who care deeply about the environment showed me how collective action can create a real impact. Each day, we collected plastic, fishing gear, and other debris, helping restore the natural beauty of the beaches and protect marine wildlife. Beyond the physical work, I learned about the delicate balance of coastal ecosystems and the importance of reducing waste at its source. The fresh sea air, breathtaking landscapes, and sense of purpose made every effort rewarding. I left with a stronger commitment to sustainability and a deeper appreciation for the ocean. This experience proves how small actions, when shared, can protect our planet for future generations.

A Life-Changing Experience Volunteering at an Animal Shelter in Northern Spain

September 20, 2025by: Julia Reed - Switzerland

Program: Volunteer Programs in Spain

5

Volunteering at an animal shelter in northern Spain was an unforgettable experience. Spending time with rescued dogs and cats, many of them abandoned or mistreated, taught me the real meaning of empathy and responsibility. Each day was different: feeding, cleaning, walking the dogs through the stunning countryside, or simply offering affection to shy animals learning to trust again. The dedication of the staff inspired me — their patience and love create a safe space where every animal has a chance to heal and find a new home. Beyond helping animals, I met amazing people from around the world who share the same passion. This experience not only improved my practical skills but also deepened my respect for animal welfare and teamwork. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a meaningful way to give back while discovering the beauty of northern Spain.

This volunteer program at the animal shelter was absolutely awesome! 🐾 From day one, everything felt super smooth — they even picked me up from the airport in a school taxi, which made arriving so easy. The Spanish course was a total game changer; it helped me connect better with everyone and made the whole experience even richer. The cultural activities were super fun too — such a cool way to get to know the local vibe and meet new people. Yeah, the shelter was a bit far from the city center, but honestly, that makes sense (you can’t exactly have a bunch of rescued animals downtown 😂). And it was totally worth the trip every time. The people — especially Antxon, Rodrigo, and Jose — were incredibly kind. I learned so much about animal care, teamwork, and Spanish, and I left feeling inspired and grateful. Highly recommend it if you’re up for an unforgettable adventure! 🌟

From the moment I was picked up at the airport and taken to my accommodation (which had everything I needed), everything about this experience was simply amazing! Taking care of rescued animals, giving them love, walking, grooming, and playing with them was truly rewarding. It helped me regain a sense of purpose and the joy of helping others. My apartment mates were about my age but from different countries, which made it even more fun. We went on excursions together and joined activities organized by the school, where I met so many incredible people. Plus, the Spanish classes included in the program helped me improve so much—I can now communicate with no problem! ??✨ The atmosphere was fantastic, and Bilbao was the perfect location. The metro took you to beautiful beaches, and if you preferred the mountains, you could be there in just 30 minutes. It’s such a hidden gem—not the most famous tourist spot, but an absolute treasure! This experience was truly life-changing, and even my university recognized its value when I returned. I couldn’t recommend it more! ??? Let me know if you’d like any tweaks! ?

I didn't know what to expect with Instituto Hemingway but it ended up exceeding my expectations. I wasn't sure if a school like this would provide the education, I was looking for, but it was actually a great benefit. The professors and administrative staff knew me well and were very attentive to my needs. When I had to make changes to my schedule, the staff was very accommodating. With the classes and my private tutor sessions, I feel like I now have a good grasp of the Spanish language. The classes were structured well and not overpacked with students. This was great as it enabled for more participation from everyone and, at the same time, helped us getting to know each other better more quickly. I also took afternoon individual classes. These were excellent too as they were tailored to anything I wanted to learn or topics I was struggling with. All my teachers were amazing. They were kind, funny and very knowledgeable. This made learning really interesting and enjoyable the entire time. I liked the variety of activities they used for teaching, especially the class Kahoots! in the afternoons and evenings free leisure and cultural activities every day were programmed and it was awesome!! My apartment was located 15 minutes away by foot. I actually enjoyed traveling to school in the morning as I got to see different parts of Bilbao that I wouldn't have seen if located closer. I shared an apartment with two flat mates who were all very nice. The apartment had everything and felt at home

The volunteer teaching program was a great experience. Having never taught children before the first couple of days were a bit daunting but by day three I was very comfortable. The kids were adorable and loved interacting with us. Just seeing their faces light up each day when we arrived was amazing. I will never forget them. This is a great option for short term volunteers. Bilbao is gorgeous, safe and really welcoming. There are loads of lovely restaurants, shops and markets so it is a nice place to explore when you are not with the school. Instituto Hemingway will organise great tours for you too.

I did my first Spanish course in 2017 and then returned on various occasions. The teachers are excellent, well-prepared, and able to assist with every inquiry you may have. I have learnt a lot during my intensive courses and also in my individual classes. In addition, the school organizes activities where you can meet other students and locals, and practice your Spanish. The city can offer something for everyone, whether you want to chat, see a movie, surf, or much more. My overall experience with the school and the teachers was excellent.

When I arrived I was welcomed like a friend. I especially liked the extra curriculum that were planned. They allowed me to meet other teachers and students. I found that the lessons provided a very good mix of the different linguistic skills, but when I compare my Spanish ability on the first day to my final day there was a massive improvement, despite the fact I was only there for a week. The school provided plenty of extra activities alongside classes. However for me the main seller was always going to be the beautiful town of Bilbao with its amazing beaches and incredibly friendly people. I would definitely recommend Instituto Hemingway as a place to improve your language abilities - do not let the incredible price put you off, it will definitely not make you wish you had spent more!

I went to Sweden and Africa in the last few months. I remember going to Sweden and I was just so amazed how beautiful the country was and I went on so much adventures with my family and I got to see the place that my dad used grow up in when he was a little child, little kid. I went to Africa and I was my first time ever going there because I had so many stories about how beautiful it is. My mum always told me that she always loved Africa and it was always a pity a piece of her every time she goes there and sees how much she loves the country. So when I went to Sweden and Africa, I got the same feeling that my dad and my mum got when they went to their home countries and I felt like I wanted to do something like this as well. :-) He he

I went to Instituto Hemmingway during the summer of 2022. It was one of the best experiences of my life! From the staff to the students everyone was friendly and approachable. I studied Spanish and also volunteered at an animal shelter that was so much fun! Even after leaving Bilbao whenever I have any questions regarding life in Spain or if I'm looking for answers to general inquiries I can still contact the Instituto and they are always more than happy to help. Overall I would recommend this experience to anyone looking for an adventure and anyone that wants to spice up their life a little! 10/10

My volunteering trip to Northern Spain with volunteering has been one of the most amazing experiences of my life thus far. From the application process to the completion of my project, I received so much support from them with the local organisation in Bilbao. The team in Bilbao are so friendly and will go that extra step to ensure you’re having an enjoyable experience at your project. As my project was animal welfare, I had the opportunity to volunteer in an animal shelter. The staff there made me feel welcomed and part of the project. I was also able to go on excursions with them around Bilbao. My favourite part was meeting locals at my project and the other incredible volunteers. I honestly had the best time and would 100% recommend Instituto Hemingway program. You won’t regret it!

My two sons - 15 years old and 17 years old went volunteering in Bilbao through Instituto Hemingway. I can't say enough how wonderful and life changing experience they have obtained! It was a great opportunity for boys to see the world from different prospective and feel the vibes of different country! I strongly believe that these kind of life experiences build their their root memories and will definitely shape them as compassionate and caring people in their future lives. They were accommodated in a host family. Inma and Ramon were a wonderful family who welcomed them and treated them as if I were their family members. I'm sure all other volunteers in the house also felt the same. I will definitely miss all their delicious foods she cooked for us and the laughter we had every time we sat down together I strongly recommend this program to anybody who wants to expand knowledge, experience, culture and languages.

The Summer Volunteer Program in Spain was an amazing experience. I highly recommend this program because it will give you the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of animals while also introducing you to the fascinating culture and history of Spain. One of the most heart-warming aspects of the trip was being able to work with different animals who had been abandoned. As volunteers, we were left with the impression that these dogs and cats genuinely appreciated us and benefited from the work we were doing. We were able to make a lot of these animals happy by giving them the attention they deserve.

Everything was really lovely. I had a great time. Really good teachers and the general atmosphere was great. I would recommend. I didn't know much before I went but was recommended by a friend. Great place and area. First I took some weeks of Spanish courses in Bilbao and then I went to a hotel to work there. The application with you was very easy and I was happy that you helped me with all my questions and arranged the interview. This made the process very easy. Also Jose was always quick in replying and helping me. The internship tasks were very accurate to my studies and even exceeded my expectations. They varied and were explained very well. So I was happy with the internship and it helped me a lot with getting an impression of the daily life in this business. The conditions given by the company were good. They provided me everything promised. The colleagues are very nice and the relation between the coworkers is very important in this company. This makes the stay a very pleasant one. So in conclusion I was very satisfied with the chosen internship. It was interesting to learn new things and I was happy in the workspace.

I’ve been wanting to improve my Spanish for a while now, but always felt I didn’t have the time. Well I finally got myself into action and signed up for a summer course. It was the perfect way to combine a lovely Spanish holiday in the sun while finally improving my Spanish. The teachers are lovely and super helpful and program has so much to offer around the city that I didn’t feel like I was in school, but just having a very productive perfect summer holiday. Would definitely recommend to anyone that wants to enjoy a great city and leave speaking Spanish! A very well-run centre with modern, clean facilities. The staff were knowledgable, helpful and friendly. I would thoroughly recommend attending courses here. They also helped me with visa because finally I stayed here 4 months in total.

I've been studying in Instituto Hemingway for 8 weeks. It is a very nice school and the school has motivated teachers. I had a very basic proficiency in Spanish before and now I had a nice improvement, I was able to perform DELE A2 exam (still waiting for the result but I believe I scored enough to pass). The staff are very nice too (thanks Javier!). If I have more available time I would certainly continue studying there. As I've studied in summer time, I had several different teachers. I wish to leave special thanks to Rodrigo and Afredo. Cultural activities programmed during weekdays were fantastic and gratis.

The description of the program was what made me want to go. I wanted some experience working with community organizations and that is exactly what I got, only better! The transition from corporate training to conducting the cultural immersion and project orientation program has not only been an extension to my profession but has also been personally transformational and satisfying. I have become more informed, flexible and grateful. Having met and worked with volunteers from diverse ethnicities and cultures has given me immense exposure in terms of experiential learning. It has made me appreciate my own country and its rich cultural heritage more than ever.

I was very much thrilled with my experience at the animal welfare projecter. For me, it was an opportunity to learn about the practical realities of day to day conservation efforts and being in touch on a regular basis with animals in need of love – which means exposure to the good, the bad and the ugly. The unpredictable nature of life in a real bush camp means that surprises are always around the corner and nothing ever goes as planned. More often than not, it meant embarking on some type of 'adventure'. The full time staff in dog shelter were very enthusiastic and compassionate about their work and they quickly made you feel part of team. A couple pieces of advice for would be volunteers over the age 40. First, if you are at the project in the Summer, temperatures can be excruciatingly warm during the day so I think the level of fitness needed to thrive in that environment is high. Second, you need to be comfortable in the company of 18 - 25 year olds. I very much enjoyed the company of the younger volunteers but it may not be for everyone.

In general, my experience with hemingway and the volunteer experience was very good. I was received very well at the placement and I was quickly integrated as one of them. My period as an volunteer there went so well that they have decided to hire me at the end. I am very grateful for this opportunity and I would recommend to someone looking for an experience like that.

I was in Northern Spain for 3 months and it has been awesome! I did not know what to expect, but my experience went beyond any expectation. In general I found the project extremely well organised and safe . I heard about the experiences of other people in similar organisation and it sounded like this project was one of the best. I could feel there was a general attention to make sure that volunteers and tourists were having the best time in a safe environment. I found the general organisation in the camp extremely efficient. I appreciate that everyone had daily tasks to help and contribute to keep common spaces clean. Food was delicious and generous; I loved the open space platforms where we were sleeping; the staff was friendly and helpful for any doubt and necessity. Being there for 3 months, I had the opportunity to work and assist to all the projects present in the community. I was fascinated by the people’s enthusiasm and dedication carrying their projects and was for me really inspiring having these guys around me.

I had the most amazing 2 months and learned so much about the seriously harmful impact that the mass tourism industry has on animals. During my time there I washed and fed the dogs every day, having prepared their food for them, went on a walk twice a week to find the animals roaming free in their natural habitat, and looked after the other animals on site, as there are many cats that need looking after too. It was great that, although the main purpose of the trip was to look after dogs, they weren’t always the main focus, which was a good thing, otherwise I think it would have felt more like a zoo rather than a project to actually help these animals. The whole purpose of the sanctuary is also to promote ethical tourism, something that I will take away with me now and promote to all my friends at home!

Spain is so unique, but Bilbao is even more unique. After 2 months I really got a hang of the culture. Everyone was friendly, but the customs are very different. It is definitely a cool place to experience living. Bilbao is still a large city, but it is not as dangerous as Barcelona or Madrid. I highly recommend this location to people who want to have a city experience but without the high risk. I would really like to mention the project’s contact persons on site: all of them are very, very friendly and helpful and have explained all the work and its necessity very well. The activities of the language school are highly recommended. Especially in the first one or two weeks this is a good orientation and you get to know great people from other countries with whom you do activities together.

Living together with all the volunteers in the same accommodation was a lot of fun and meant we had a lot of freedom and were independent. Overall, I would really recommend this project, it has a great balance between conservation work and leisurely activities. Bilbao is a very cool town with a lot of bars and restaurants but remains very local and has kept all its charm. All the staff and volunteers were so friendly I really had an amazing time with them.

One month ago I went in Kishinau and I did the volunteer with dogs and cats. There are to many word to describe my experience with them, but no many to describe what I felt. If I can describe it in two words I will use beauty and love. You will fall in love with this town, with all the beautiful place to visit and to know their history. You will see an other face of Kishinau, because if you go in the middle of the town, you will see many things to discover. But if you go to the suburb with our placement, you will fall in love with this town. You will update your vocabulary to describe all the moment with them, they are amazing, they are like a volcano of happinesses, they always want to play, they want a lot of hug, they are amazing. When you spend the time with them, you forget about your personal problems, in the moment they are your target. You will find a family , because you will live for a short moment of your life with other volunteers from all the country of the world. You will make new friendships and when the experience will end, you will stay in contact for a long a time. I really suggest you, to do this experience with them.

Teaching English as a volunteer in Moldova was a great experience for me. I taught students with different ages. I thoroughly enjoyed working with the other teachers because they were always welcoming to me. Many times the teachers would invite me to grab a coffee with them during the break time, or to try Moldovan food after school. In addition, living with a family allowed me to gain a truly authentic experience. I learned a lot of Romanian along the way and I got to immerse myself in all parts of the Moldovan lifestyle. My family was welcoming, fun, and always made sure that I was comfortable in their house. On top of all that, they were great cooks! I would definitely recommend this experience to anyone who is lucky enough to consider this opportunity.

Upon looking for a language school to learn Spanish, there were many options and too many choices. However, after attending Instituto Hemingway for a 4-week intensive course; I knew I had definitely made the right decision. When I first arrived in Bilbao, I felt as though I would never make friends but on my first day of classes, I met some of the most interesting people and some of my best friends. Every day I looked forward to seeing my friends at the school and the teachers as well. All of the teachers were excellent and I learned more Spanish in 4 weeks than I have in 8 years of taking other Spanish classes. No matter what question I had, they were always willing to answer it in complete detail, which helped improve my Spanish tremendously! Instituto Hemingway also has an excellent location, as my commute was only 5 minutes walking distance! There are great restaurants and shopping near the school, which I loved especially. Great location, beautiful school, awesome teachers, and an all-around fantastic experience! Definitely Instituto Hemingway is MUST if you want to learn Spanish! Please forget about typical locations on the media to learn Spanish. Go and get out of confort area!. After 4 weeks learning Spanish then I took an internship in video production with them and just loved it from the very first minute!! In my opinion a Spanish course for 4 weeks followed by an internship for 3 months is an ideal program.

I recently spent 2 months in an intensive course at Instituto Hemingway and had a really fun and rewarding experience. While I was in the process of researching and choosing a school in Bilbao, Rodrigo the course advisor, was super responsive, answered all of my questions, and helped me choose the best course to meet my rather vague goal of simply “improving my Spanish.” My group class professor Carlos was incredible – she has a great sense of humor and brought so much energy and creativity to the class every single day. I was exceptionally happy with the individual classes that I took in the afternoons. I worked with a variety of professors and each one was prepared, motivated, and really pushed me to improve. Initially I was a little nervous that I would be in a school with only younger students, but there was a great mix of ages, nationalities, and personalities, and overall I found that while we all had a good time, everyone worked hard. I was in a class that committed to speaking Spanish together outside the classroom as well, which is not always the case when there is more than one English speaker in the group. In the end, I greatly improved my ability to speak, read and understand Spanish, and I have a lot more confidence with the language. I highly recommend the Instituto Hemingway experience and would definitely return! After 2 months improving my Spanish I took a paid internship in the field I wanted and everything worked perfectly!!

I spent 11 months in Hemingway. It was a great experience for me. This school offers everything to make living in a foreign country easier for you. Besides learning the Spanish language they offer a huge variety of leisure time activities. I got to know a lot of people in this school and the motivation to visit a language school in a foreign country was a different one for each of them. But there was always a common agreement amongst all of us: The quality of Hemingway is great. The teachers are the best ones I’ve ever had. Each one tries to take into consideration the wishes and needs of all of the students, which is not an easy thing, but they manage and they do it with a lot of charm and professionalism at the same time. One can learn Spanish at this school, have a lot of fun and even make friends. The school is situated quite central next to Casco Viejo area. An incredible place to chill out during lunch time and to recuperate the Spanish you learned during the day. I just can recommend Hemingway for everyone that wants to improve his Spanish knowledge or also for those who want to learn the language from the very beginning.

My new life started with Instituto Hemingway

I am retired and of a certain age (68) and thus was a little apprehensive about attending a language school of which I knew very little, in a city – Bilbao – where I would be a complete stranger. E-mails from AIL were very understanding and encouraging, however, so I decided to take the risk. ¡Ques uerte! The decision to enroll at Instituto Hemingway was one of the best I have made since I retired. I enjoyed every minute, both in the school and in Bilbao. To begin with, Bilbao is a very easy city in which to adapt: it took no time at all to feel at home there. The people are naturally warm and welcoming, the city is clean and extraordinarily beautiful, amenities are accessible, good food and drink are everywhere and not expensive, fine art and good architecture abound (as is well known), and public transportation is efficient and easy to use. It is impossible to be bored or at a loss for entertainment in Bilbao, and suitable accommodation is easy to find. And then there is Instituto Hemingway. I chose it for its location (in beautiful, convenient Casco Viejo area) and, as mentioned above, because the staff had been very sympathetic and encouraging when we corresponded. But by the end of my first day of class I was aware of two other supremely important advantages: the quality of the faculty and the quality of the students. My teacher was unquestionably the best, most dynamic teacher of Spanish I have ever had. She gave every inch of herself to the job and every day brought original ideas, fresh insights, and crystal clarity of explanation – as well as abundant humor and a wonderful depth of culture – to the classroom. Every day the four hours of classroom instruction passed quickly and left me eager to return the next day. My teacher’s openness and breadth of reference (as well as her humor) encouraged the interaction so essential to acquisition of familiarity with the language, and my fellow students rose to the occasion. From all over the world, they were motivated and united by an affinity for Spain and its language and a desire to learnto speak Spanish. They were open-minded and ready to engage with their colleagues. Friendships formed quickly and endured throughout. We learned from one another as well as from our marvelous teacher. Throughout my time at Instituto Hemingway the school administration was cheerful and helpful, always available to answer questions and to offer help. I attended classes at Hemingway for four weeks. It was not enough. I intend to return as soon as possible, and without hesitation I would encourage any student of Spanish to look to Hemingway for a productive and happy learning experience in one of the best cities in the world.

I decided to go to Instituto Hemingway for a four week intensive course mainly to build my listening and speaking skills. I made great progress in my time there. All of the staff were great, but the teachers in particular were very patient and helpful. Instituto Hemingway Spanish school is the best! The teachers are great - very professional, patient and try to create a fun and friendly atmosphere at class. I really enjoy going to Spanish classes and highly recommend this school! Moreover, the accommodation that the school arranged for me is just perfect! Nevertheless, I would like to have more social activities through the school - so I can get to know the city and the other students better. To sum up, I really recommend this school and would like to come to Bilbao again and continue my studies there. Then I continued with a course in another more popular city for foreigners like Valencia. Everything about my experience was wonderful. Valencia was a city is beautiful. The centre of the city is magical and a wonderful spot to absorb Spanish culture. The School is located right in the heart of all that culture. My partner and I took classes together. Everyone is extremely kind and supportive. Learning a language can be daunting but the team there make it so fun. We highly recommend Instituto Hemingway!

For me, Instituto Hemingway was the ideal choice not only to learn and improve my Spanish but also to prepare and to pass the DELE exam. I think it’s definitely the best Spanish school in Bilbao with the best value for money and of course I was very content with my teacher’s level of professionalism. DELE Preparation course helped me enormously to understand in which different parts consist of the exam and which criteria it has for each one. During the classes, we had a lot of tests which helped me to get accustomed to the time limits of each exam’s phase and in its turn to pass the exam with a great level of confidence. I also very appreciated the reduced number of students per course which I think certainly facilitates the learning process. I highly recommend Instituto Hemingway due to its excellent student treatment, good prices, interesting intensive courses, and most importantly – the excellent teachers! Surfing was the best extra to my Spanish course.

It was the first time I brought students from UK to Spain but I can already say that I was surprised with the quality from my reception with Rodrigo (attentive and friendly!), from teachers Carlos and Esti (which are great and the classes are flying by) and the events by Alfredo (always friendly and concerned to always promote the best). I really recommend Instituto Hemingway as the best option in Bilbao! The group lessons are in small groups, is well-structured and diversified – besides reading texts and watching films the units will repeat in small games. My kids had such a wonderful experience from the very beginning until the end of our programme. Besides surfing and volleyball, there are dancing courses for the Spanish dances Salsa and Bachata, which we really enjoyed. During our time in Bilbao a stay at kind guest families, which extends a warm welcome. It was a good opportunity to use and repeat the new vocabulary. All in all, we really enjoyed our two weeks at Bilbao.

The school is very well located, the staff very attentive from the first contact, the facilities are new and always clean, and they also organize activities outside of classes so that students can get to know each other and also Bilbao. Very good! The class sizes are small so you get a lot of individual attention and opportunity to speak. The lessons are well structured and tailored for each level. It was by far the best language learning experience I have had ever. I understood how it really is to teach someone, inspire and engage into the world of knowledge. My work was very pleasant, and thanks to my superiors, I didn't feel any pressure at all, which only made me more creative and kept my internship experience at highest level! It may also be a bit difficult for you if you are not used to the Spanish schedule as their days are very long. Generally I went to the school at 10am and didn't leave until around 9 because of the long 3 hour siesta in the middle of the day. Other than these two things it was a great experience and I would recommend it to anyone who has any interest in teaching or simply just wants to improve their Spanish. If you are ready to experience similar endevours, don't think twice and go for it! :)

Absolutely fabulous!

I started taking Spanish classes in Hemingway in February and LOVED it. All the teachers are so nice and knowledgeable and make learning Spanish really fun. And the students are from all over the world and all age groups. It's a great mix. When Spain closed down due to COVID-19 in March the school didn't miss a beat and immediately switched over to online classes and honestly I wouldn't know what to do without these classes. They get me out of bed every morning and I love meeting new classmates online and continuing to learn Spanish. The online classes are just as good as the classes in the school and it's obvious that these guys have lots of experience with teaching Spanish. I have already extended my classes twice and will probably stick around for quite a while. Then from June 8th we started to in class again with the typical proceedings against Covid19. My experience at Instituto Hemingway was absolutely amazing and i wouldn't have changed a thing. My teachers were the best I've ever had and the location was perfect. Everything was perfect and I will be returning for sure! After just 5 months, I feel as though my Spanish has improved immensely and i would recommend Hemingway to anyone wanting to learn Spanish quickly and in a lovely environment. I had such a brilliant experience and i wish that i was still there learning more Spanish!

I had a really good experience during the courses, I learned a lot of interesting things and I meet new people, I made new friends from different cultures, and even during the pandemic, the school managed the situation in a professional way in order to maintain the connection between the students and the professors. Honestly, I didn't feel this "students versus professors" relationship, because during the classes, somehow, we acted more like friends or a family, in a such a way that makes you learn more in a pleasant environment, and this is what makes the difference.

I was very pleased with my teacher, Francisco. He was a very nice person and a good teacher. The location was also very good, near to the center and near to metro stations. My classes were in Calle Bailen. The entrance was so beautiful and so was the balconies with views to river and old part of town. The classroom was very nice, a place where you felt comfortable as well as at the rest of school. I attended many activities, a city tour, a cooking workship, hiking excursion, museums and salsa lessons etc. I really loved them The best experience I had was with the family, they were excellent and made me feel really welcome. I think my Spanish really improved with them as they always corrected me when I made a mistake and always encouraged me. Surfing was the best experience ever I had. Fantastic beaches were just 30 min far from city centre by a super safe, modern, clean and punctual metro system. I am in love with this underrated city.

I was very happy with everything in Instituto Hemingway. The teachers are very friendly and qualified. The location is perfect, especially in the summer because with the metro you are 25 minutes to the beach. The activities the school offers are interesting, and, especially at the beginning, it is very good to know new people and to know the city better. Excellent teaching and a friendly and welcoming environment. Perfect location for me - great area to be in (bars, restaurants, market etc). Facilities and social activities were all good. We met other students from different countries which made for a rich experience. I think that the most important thing in any kind of school is the relationship teacher-student, and at Instituto Hemingway I felt like a friend was teaching me Spanish! I'm still in touch with the people who work there! I loved it. Carmen and Jose always smile and do their best for the students. It like being in a big group of friends doing stuff together, not just learning Spanish the "boring-standard-way". Moreover, the school facility is neat and clean.

The course, the school, the teachers the directors, everything was amazing, I loved it!

I really liked the teachers. The are very dedicated and funny. The location of the school is very good not far from the metro station. What I also liked is the design of the classes, very creative. If you choose Instituto Hemingway Spanish School to learn Spanish, be prepared that there are events every day. The atmosphere is very friendly. You then can combine it with an internship for some weeks/months. This internship enabled me to develop my future profession skills, and provided a lot of fun at the same time. I would highly recommend the internship to anyone who wants to experience a different culture while doing a really rewarding job. The teaching aspect is amazing, the children are so friendly and you find yourself developing your skills quickly. Before doing the internship I had no teaching experience but you soon get the hang of how the system works in the school setting. Doing the internship was great because you meet loads of like minded people and all live within 5 minutes walk of each other. You can eat in local establishments for not very much money at all and try foods that you maybe wouldn't come across as a tourist. I thoroughly enjoyed the whole process and would definitely now use the qualification I have gained to teach again in other countries.

My study abroad experience was once in a lifetime. My program was helpful, kind, sincere, fun, and loving! Anything I needed assistance with Instituto Hemingway was there to help. I traveled to over 15 countries and 20+ cities worldwide. I met the best group of friends that I still keep in touch with and am planning a reunion this summer! I had the opportunity to immerse myself in the Spanish culture, learning about the food, language, the people, and overall everyday lifestyle. I felt as if I was at home! After this program, I am much more independent, aware of myself and the world around me and so much more grateful! My favorite memory has to be going to the bars with my friends and singing our classic karaoke song- Purple rain.

I greatly enjoyed my time in Bilbao traveling with Instituto Hemingway. Our program itinerary included the perfect combination of service, tourism, and cultural immersion. The program was excellent. Classes, excursions and activities were well organized. I loved staying with a host family as it was an experience that gave me a glimpse into the every day lives of the locals, as well as an opportunity to use and improve my Spanish! Our chef, Gorka was absolutely phenomenal! He was very knowledgable and experienced, and her presence made the trip even more enjoyable! I can't wait to return to the beautiful country of Spain!

At the beginning, my cooking skills were very low, but thanks to the solid organization and professionalism of my teachers, I was able to cook as a professional chef. The teachers and I got along very well as they are without exception very friendly and polite. Besides their tremendous experience in teaching and undoubtful professional competence, you feel their dedication to teach the students new things and enjoy learning a new language. And above all, they have been very patient with me, which I really admire. I enjoyed the cooking lessons, the internship in a fantastic restaurant, night life and Spanish lessons. Accommodation was really next to our School. Everything was very convenient and affordable. My resume is upgraded and after this experience in Bilbao I found a great position in my home country.

Due to my holiday in South America next year I want to learn Spanish to be prepared and to communicate with the local people. So I chose an Intensive course 30 for two weeks, that was divided into group lessons and private lessons. I really like the lessons, the teachers speak slowly and very clear. The group lessons are in small groups, is well-structured and diversified – besides reading texts and watching films the units will repeat in small games. In the private lessons, we talked a lot and they react to my individual learning objective. Additional to the Spanish courses Instituto Hemingway provides a great and varied leisure time activities, that is included in the course price. Besides surfing and volleyball, there are dancing courses for the Spanish dances Salsa and Bachata, which I really like. During my time in Bilbao a stay at a kind guest family, which extends a warm welcome. It was a good opportunity to use and repeat the new vocabulary. All in all, I really enjoyed my two weeks at Instituto Hemingway in Bilbao. Besides learning the Spanish language I also learned the Spanish culture (most of all tapas and sangria) and got to know great people, I still stay in touch.

Class location is very convenient. Helpful for small group class and discussion. I enjoyed the classes with Instituto Hemingway. I felt the teachers were very flexible and I had the opportunity to learn a great deal. The teaching was in a relaxed environment. I spent 3 weeks studying at Instituto Hemingway in August 2019. I had 2 teachers (Guadalupe and Carlos) and their educational methods allowed me to enhance my language skills in Spanish through group work, oral presentations and grammar exercises. It's also a good way to learn about foreign lifestyles and customs since the enrolled students come from all around the world. In short: I highly recommend Instituto Hemingway!!

So, I visited the Guggenheim Museum for free. I would like to go back soon! Thank you :) Advice: Is better if you go around august or october. The weather is fine and less people.

The atmosphere of Instituto Hemingway was extremely beneficial. The teachers were kind, helpful, and amazing to be around. Their lesson plans not only taught me the Spanish language, but about the people and the culture itself. The eye-opening trips are something that I will never forget, the beauty within the country is simply stunning, The history and legends of Bilbao are truly remarkable. I learned so much in only a few days! Instituto Hemingway´s program is welcoming, caring, and helpful to those wanting to learn the Spanish language and culture. As to wines I must say I learnt everything involved to the wine industry: harvesting, crushing and pressing, fermentation, clarification, and aging and bottling. I was living in a village in the Ribera del Duero region. i lived in a family run-business I can´t wait to return there.

Very impressed by the personal service we received in Bilbao. Instituto Hemingway takes the time to accommodate everyone’s needs in the group. Bilbao was safe and easy to navigate. Family/apartment stays were well organized. I have traveled with larger companies for over 20 years where you are just a number. Hemingway knows your name and is there for you in person on a daily basis to ask you what they can do for you!!! The teachers and guides were using Spanish at all times so that the students could improve their skills. Classes were authentic from cooking to taking a trip to the grocery store. I highly recommend this program and cannot wait to take my own students.

I can really recommend Instituto Hemingway! I took classes for 12 weeks and learned a lot. My teacher Carlos explained everything with a lot of patience, in a clear and fun way. The groups are small so you can speak a lot, ask questions and interact easily. Muchas gracias Carlos! I completed all of the level B1, and found all explanations of grammar easy to understand. The teachers are extremely friendly and ensure you have a good time in class. Would recommend to anyone in Bilbao. Classes are very organized and teachers encourage us to use the language and correct us when there are mistakes. all of teachers are very friendly, very passionate and patient. I enjoy my classes very much and feel more confident while using Spanish outside class. It´s very interesting meeting people from different countries, different background and life experience and finding what´s in common. I´d definitely sign up again in the future.

I found the process with Instituto Hemingway very easy. The website is simple and helpful. I was recommended to take at least a couple of weeks of Spanish courses before going to the internship at a top hotel and this is what I did. I found it really helpful not only to improve my Spanish but also to get used to new way of life. The internship I made in Spain was matching my expectations. The tasks were as announced in the interview, which was a brand new experience for me. Few things were not mentioned during the interview, as the fact that the hotel was a 4 star hotel close to beach. As it was announced on the application and during the interview, the hours and work per week and the wage were tough. I worked 40 hours/week and the wage was 200€/month, which I found consequent for this kind of internship, demanding a lot of energy and responsibilities. Despite all that, I made my best and concentrated all my energy and determination on this internship. My colleagues were nice people who welcomed me very well. My general experience was intense; it was very interesting to discover a new environment of work, and I liked to work at the hotel. I really wanted to discover the bartending area, and I discovered a new environment, where I learned a lot. Moreover, working with people from all over the world was great, that was what I wanted, so I'm very happy with this experience.

There is a personal treatment towards each student. You feel unique and special. Everyone treats you like one of the family. Both Jose and the teachers are experts in what they do and also great people. As soon as I can, I'm sure I'll go back to Instituto Hemingway and Bilbao. I recommend the school to all my students and acquaintances. Thanks for all you are, Instituto Hemingway team!

The internship had fulfilled all my expectations, the tasks were as explained in the contract. I was surprised by the willingness of the managers and co-workers explaining me stuff I wanted to know and even more. The conditions were good, the manager have tried to always check with us how we feel, and we were free to communicate with him if we feel uncomfortable about anything and if it was within his competences, he did what was the best. I found my colleagues little bit hard to make friends with, but we have end up having very good relationship and interesting talks. It is very important to feel support from your co-workers and I can confess I felt part of a team. I feel like this type of work is kind of easy for me, I was aiming for the higher position and I feel ready to accept more responsibility and load of tasks. I have been capable and responsible worker and it was noticed and appreciated by my workers and managers. I can summarise the internship as successful and enriching.

Instituto Hemingway was truly a great help. It's a group of great professionals who helped me in everything I needed, always giving the information that I requested. Without them, I could not have found the company that I did an internship in. I really liked to do an internship in the company. All members of the company were very welcoming and friendly. About my internship, it was and it is the best thing in my life. I really really enjoyed it. It was something different but people made it super nice and easy for me. They were supporting, caring and nice and they taught me a lot of things at the same time. But I need to be honest, in the beginning, it was hard. I didn't expect to work like that, I am talking about split shifts every day because I was told that I would do that occasionally but it was every day actually. But in the end, it all worked out because if I knew that before I wouldn't go. In my opinion, this is an amazing opportunity for young people to try something new, learn different stuff and meet beautiful people. I can definitely say that I met people for life. They were my family all time long and I can not thank them enough for everything they did for me. In the end, all I can say is that I am already looking for another internship

I liked the fact that the teachers do not put any pressure on us and they show a lot of patience. Being in a small group also facilitates learning because the teacher can take the time to correct each student and understand these difficulties. The courses are not too long and the breaks between each are beneficial, moreover the school is well located geographically with particular parks nearby to go to revise or work quietly. It was a very good experience. The staff was friendly and helpful. They knew how to teach. When I asked a question ,I received a direct answer back. They were patient and encouraging. The location and facilities were great; close to the metro. I did not take part in the outside activities which I also heard that are excellent.

It is not always easy to find Spanish course when your level is nonexistent. That is why I was so happy to find this School. The academy is situated close to the city center with plenty of transport options around. The entire space is newly done, quiet and it feels welcoming. Jose the director is excellent. He helped me find the most suitable way for me which worked perfectly. My teacher's name is Eli who has a lot of teaching experience from many different countries. She is patient, professional and very easy to talk to. Thanks to her my Spanish has been improving every day. The learning material is fantastic. Plus she always has ready different ways to teach me like audio, videos, games or tests. In Hemingway became my second family during my stay in Bilbao. The classes are small so the teacher has time to attend to all the student and therefore the progress is very rapid. The personnel helped me with literally anything I needed, from picking the courses to finding a host accommodation for me. I really enjoyed my stay at In2Spanish and I can more than recommend it if you want to learn Spanish and make some new friends.

Hello, My name is Francis Mathew I have recently returned from my 3 month program in Spain. It was the most amazing experience I could have asked for. No matter what issues occurred or arised the issue was addressed and resolved in an instant. They couldn’t have made the very daunting challenge of moving overseas any easier. They also ensure you experience every part of the culture. I was able to make life long friends and experience interning in my field while also finding a second home in Spain. This program also brought to light the beauty in traveling. No matter where I was in Europe I knew I could always call anyone from Instituto Hemingway and they’d assist the best the can. Working in country was also seamless for me. A big concern of mine was transportation and they made It very easy to understand and allowed us to situate ourselves with a walking tour the second day we were there. I would recommend to anyone and everyone. Thanks Instituto Hemingway

I went to Northern Spain through the Internship to work an internship for a local sports management firm and gain class credit and international work experience. While my primary focus was on the work I was doing for my internship, I also took Spanish classes with Instituto Hemingway 5 times a week in order to keep up with my Spanish as much as possible. The classes were excellent, extremely helpful and there were options for private or group classes. I never had a single problem with safety during my three months working in Northern Spain. Just like any city, you need to pay attention to what's going on around you, but I walked almost everywhere I went (work, language exchanges, classes and bars) and never had a problem. I also loved my housing arrangements. During my time working and studying there, I lived in a five-bedroom, 2 bathrooms.. I had my own room which included a bed, desk, nightstand and wardrobe closet. In addition, my apartment was located right near a bus stop and a metro station.

I studied in Instituto Hemingway for 5 weeks this spring and I enjoyed it a lot! I had wonderful time, my teachers were great and I made a lot of friends and saw a lot of Bilbao as well! I only knew a little Spanish when I arrived, but now I can speak, I learned present, past and future tenses, acquired a lot of vocabulary and built up my confidence in speaking! Now I speak Spanish and I read books as well! I had a lot of teachers during my time at Instituto Hemingway, my favourite ones are Eli, Guada and Javi. Sara, Carlos and Pedro were great as well! Eli is so perfect that I can understand absolutely everything she says from the very beginning – from zero level! Amaia creates an atmosphere of fun in his lessons and encourages you a lot! Javi has such a ways to explain the grammar that you immediately get it and he gives a lot of interesting information about Spain and Bilbao! You learn a lot – not only Spanish. Guadalupe sometimes teaches through arguing with you – and it is a lot of fun! So I learned a lot, having fun at the same time! The activities were amazing – my favourite ones were the visit to a Latino club, flamenco show, visit to ice bar, making sangria on the terrace, visit to Casco Viejo, excursions to Gernika and San Juan.. I lived in the on-site accommodation and made a lot of friends there from all over the world – from Sweden, from United States, from Russia, from Germany, from Brasil, from Nederlands, from India, even from a very small country I have never heard before… Studying in Instituto Hemingway you meet people all the time: in the classes, as flat-mates, on activities, on the additional lessons, on salsa lessons (I also took 2 weeks of Spanish and Salsa…) I am coming back in September for a longer course and some of my friends are coming too! Such a pity that not everyone is able to come here the same time!!! It was great!

All the time spent in the kitchen was absolutely great. I learned how to create better dishes and gained knowledge of how to combine ingredients. I got to work on my knife skills, plating and production. During the language program, the experience with the host family was amazing and all of the teachers at the school were very friendly. One of the most rewarding times in my life. I wish I could live in Spain! Everyone was so friendly, the staff plus my roommates. I had so much fun not only learning new cooking techniques but travelling the country and visiting different sites as well as sampling the great french cuisine. I have friends for life now from all over the world. And also a lifetime of great memories The services that Instituto Hemingway provided are very good. The program was nothing short of exceptional and something I'll always remember.

As there was always someone to inform me or for me to ask if I had any difficulties. Once I arrived to my destination, as they were already expecting me the process was smooth and I was shown where I would be staying and given a brief guide on where and what I would be doing. I greatly enjoyed my internship and the bar work exceeded my expectations. The work was enjoyable and very social as I was able to meet hundreds of people every day and there was events to make things more interesting. Initially I expected to do some basic cooking but much to my surprise as summer started there were fun weekly events such as the barbecue and paella evenings which were held outside on the terrace. As about the accommodation - the room was spacious and included sufficient space for all my belongings and alongside this included a table and some other shelves and drawers and a large floor space. The beds were clean and I was able to change my own sheets whenever I felt necessary. I have definitely achieved my goal which was to develop my Spanish speaking skills. At first I was unable to speak and on some occasions dealing with colleagues and customers proved difficult. But without a doubt I can say I had a fantastic summer and made some amazing friends who I have already planned to meet with again. My Spanish ability is considerably better as I feel confident to hold a conversation on a variety of topics and work in a Spanish speaking environment with minimal problems. The area itself was a beautiful place and on my days off I used the opportunity to visit the tourist sites, but also as I spoke and got to know local people, I discovered lesser known areas such as a nearby fishing spot only 20 minutes away from the city centre. All my expectations were satisfied and even more. The living conditions that the hotel offered us were very good and comfortable. I met people from all over the world and experiences and emotions were wonderful. The experience I gained there was very useful for my future and the profession I have been focusing on.

Great school with great teachers!! I loved my experience there, the way of teaching my kids is clear and the books are well-done. I like the fact that they are not more than 10 people in class so that the teacher can really stay focused on every student. They are also very helpful and reactive at the reception or by email if you have anything to ask. I insist on the fact that the teachers are really super nice and have a great approach with the students irrespective of age! The big "+" of the school are the activities that are organized for their students ! Rodrigo, the activities' coordinator, organize every week at least 5 activities so that we can meet the other students and have fun all together! They organize great city-trips for free like bike tour, street art tour, bar crawl, events, activities to discover the city and MANY other things! I really recommend this school at 200% to anyone who's willing to learn Spanish in Bilbao in a great atmosphere, awesome teachers and international students!

Coming to Bilbao has been an unforgettable experience. First, because the city is very nice and especially because the course was very interesting. I will return to my home country with concrete elements (games) to give my classes. Exchanging with other teachers from different countries is also very interesting. Among several language centers I have chosen Instituto Hemingway because first I saw on their website a course intended for teachers and second I have always had clear and accurate information whatever I asked for, just from the first moment I put me in contact with the administration of the school. The staff is very attentive and willing to help you whenever. There are organized many activities that help you to deepen your knowledge about the history and the culture of Spain. The course that was offered to me covered the topics I had indicated in the previous questionnaire. The apartment corresponds in everything that was agreed before. The course taught by Eli was interesting. She puts a special focus on linguistic and grammatical issues. And so it was interesting the course taught by Carlos who explains the use of audiovisual materials and pictures in the lessons. I would recommend this training course for teachers who are interested in further training in their profession.

I’ve been at Instituto Hemingway for about 6 weeks now, and I’m more sure than ever that I made the right choice to come here! The classes are fun and relaxed, but you still learn so much! The teachers and other people that work there are all so friendly and helpful, everyone wants to make sure you’re doing well! Before I moved to Bilbao, I had a lot of questions about classes, housing, and even my student visa, but I always had help from the amazing people at Instituto Hemingway. I wouldn’t have been able to figure everything out all on my own! The school also organizes daily excursions that are very fun and affordable! I love my teachers, my classmates who have quickly become my friends, and the experiences I’ve had so far! Can’t wait to see what the next 6 months have in store for me!

In my opinion, classes, teachers, location, Internship, facilities and activities are very good. All the premises are clean, the staff was very helpful and friendly, the teachers were very professional. The time I spent in Bilbao was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. At the beginning I was worried because I decided to travel alone, but when I arrived in Instituto Hemingway I met people that were more than acquaintances. People at the front desk are friendly and available for each doubt or piece of advice you need. Teachers are very good and every lesson is absolutely useful. Two of the best things I remember with so much love are the amazing and astonishing city. Each side has a particular story to tell and every traveller is driven by a passionate feeling of wholeness with it. The second are friends that I met there. I'm already in contact with most of them and we promised to see again each other in the next future, and possibly repeat this amazing experience at Instituto Hemingway again. The third thing is how much I learnt about cooking world in Spain. The internship was perfectly located, and staff was friendly to me explaining all process about different dishes related to Spanish cuisine. It was so rewarding!! If I should give a grade from 0 to 10 to the whole experience, evaluating the school, the teachers and the overall service, it is absolutely a 10. Guys what are you waiting for? Go to Instituto Hemingway!!!

Rodrigo is the friendly Director assistant who is focused on ensuring each student has an enjoyable experience which fulfills their expectations. Our teacher Carlos was very effective & tailored the lessons to match the variety of abilities among his students. His lessons were fun & educational. Additional staff such as Eli who helped with visits to tourist & scenic locations were also very friendly & professional. In summary, Instituto Hemingway is a boutique language school centrally located which offers a tailored, effective learning experience combined with the opportunity to explore their beautiful island with its relaxed lifestyle. This internship enabled me to develop my future profession skills, and provided a lot of fun at the same time. I spent eight fantastic weeks working with animals at my internship in Spain. In the future I want to become a vet, therefore I wanted to spend my summer working with animals and gaining experience in animal behavior and veterinary medicine. The same day when I arrived, I met wonderful people and we had a great time together. I will always remember my first day in Spain when, with my new friends, we went all together to a parade in town. It was one of the best moments that I experienced during my internship. My coordinators were really helpful during my stay. It was the first time that I left home for such a long time and at the beginning, My work was very pleasant, and thanks to my superiors, I didn't feel any pressure at all, which only made me more creative and kept my internship experience at highest level!

The school, housing and most activities were close by in the center of town. The town is accessible with public transportation available everywhere. My host family was very gracious and took the time to talk with me daily and allowed me to experience the great food of Spain. I never got to have a study abroad experience and this was exactly what I hoped it would be. I was able to stay in a studio apartment up the hill from the school, a five minute walk. I took classes for 4 hours each day and each of my instructors was great. I was able through many opportunities to practice my speaking as well as having extensive grammar lessons. I was there for three weeks, it was great! My volunteer experience in the afternoons was a rewarding memento working with children who were in need of love and day care.

One year ago I used this service to find an internship abroad. I want to mention my mentor, Alfredo, he was very helpful. He found an internship that suited my current studies. After been rejected from my first offer, Alfredo found another job for me within a week which I was accepted to in the end. The agency is quick and responsive with emails. Friendly and organised service. After that, I was so happy that I wanted to come back to Spain and chose to take a semester program abroad in Southern Spain but through Instituto Hemingway. My experience was better than I could have imagined - excellent teachers, interactive classes and many opportunities to socialize. I took four hours of classes in the mornings and the time flew by. Emphasis was placed on commonly used Spanish that I would need to communicate and to understand others. Although there was emphasis on grammar and verb conjugations, there was several opportunities to speak and write to develop greater fluency

The opportunity to meet with individual teachers in restaurants and cafes was a real plus. My university requires me to find an internship and Instituto Hemingway, especially Jose has been very helpful for me. My Dad found this place and saw the abundance of classes offered and knew I'd find something here. The Master was absolute amazing from the beginning to the end. I enjoyed so much everything I learnt there. Well first and foremost, this experience has been the best thing I have done for ages. It has allowed me to experience a different culture, given me the opportunity to improve my Spanish and to see a different view on life. This hotel Where I was located in particular are incredibly warm and treat me as part of the family. I think its in the Spanish nature to have your relatives and friends very close by. They allow me to treat their hotel as my home (which was what i was expecting in the first place) so there is no awkwardness or misunderstandings which is fantastic for me. I learnt a lot about beauty, spas and massages in general. The hotel had 4 stars category and my supervisor taught me all ins and outs about working there.

Cooking in Spain was by far one of the most amazing things I have ever done. I left Spain with a high level of confidence not only with my ability to both speak Spanish and cook but also with myself . I made a number of connections with people from different states and countries, and I still keep in touch with almost everyone I met. The friendships I made throughout this experience have made an incredible impact on my life, and I learned so much about myself through this experience. Not only was Hemingway a fun experience, but I also learned so much about Spanish culture through unique experiences like wine tasting courses, cooking classes, and music demonstrations. One of my favorite parts was living in shared apartment.

I would advise everyone to go study abroad. Not only did I developed my language skills, I also developed a lot personally. I loved my experience in Bilbao and I have fallen in love with the city. The teachers are amazing. One of the things that surprised me the most, is the close relation between the students and the teachers. My Spanish skills have improved so much within such a short period of time. When I arrived I didn’t speak any Spanish anda after studying nine months abroad, I have the level of upper intermediate. I believe that there is no other way to become fluent in a language than to go abroad and ‘live the language’. Instituto Hemingway is a beautiful school, located in downtown and close to the beach. During your daily life, you’ll be surrounded among local people, which is great for your cultural experience and language improvement. The classes are very well organised, the staff is friendly and the school organises interesting activities and trips.

The program at Instituto Hemingway far exceeded all expectations. I was able to "jump start" my Spanish studies with excellent teachers in a warm, lovely environment. The accommodations were luxurious, the food delicious and the setting breathtaking. Instruction addressed all learning styles : conversation at breaks, visits to interesting places, classroom exercises and more. I very much appreciated the family's patience and support as I attempted to communicate. They could not have been more encouraging. I also very much enjoyed learning more about Spain itself through daily life and the small talk between classes at Instituto. I've definitely been able to take away a plan for further study here at home. Altogether a terrific experience.

My dream to live a Spanish experience was fulfilled this past August when I lived and studied with Instituto Hemingway . The beautiful Instituto Hemingway is truly unique. You are welcomed by a warm and caring staff. Language instruction is tailored to interests and requests. Cultural excursions abound. We thoroughly enjoyed this food tour with Alfredo! He is so full of great information and takes pains to introduce you to the best jamon, chocolate, olive oil, and other food specialties in Bilbao. Her passion for food is contagious, while his presentation of information is thorough, well-organized, and engaging. Plus, you get more than a food tour, as his historical knowledge and photography skills are revealed when he explains sites along the way and shows you the best places from which to take pictures. Alfredo is very considerate of the vendors, and extremely helpful to his guests. If you want advice on good restaurants, she will not only give you that, but will book a reservation for you. If you are looking to improve your Spanish skills, this is the place to go. Bilbao is the safest place I have ever lived in my life. Our group got along great and I really enjoyed making friends with the international students that also attended Instituto Hemingway. Instituto regularly schedules cultural events, and we attended nearly all of them. Languages and traveling are probably two of my favorite things in life so I absolutely had the time of my life studying abroad and am making plans to return (hopefully to live) as soon as possible. Bilbao is a great city for making new friends and trying new things. During my time in Spain I explored cultural differences and their social and historical causes and my knowledge of the Spanish language increased in a way that it never could have had I not been so utterly immersed in it. Travelling around Spain and Europe in general is so cheap! Please do it and have your headquarters in Bilbao in Northern Spain

She makes me talk about really interesting topics, she is always cheerful, punctual and super engaged in what she does. I would certainly recommend her. She is always professional and also friendly, during our lessons she would support and encourage no matter how discouraged I might be, she is an expert on teaching Spanish, and I would highly recommend her for anyone who is looking to take their Spanish to the next level. I also went with her to different activities programmed by her to know each cultural aspect of being in Spain. I also enjoyed my stay living at home.

Intensive Spanish course for 30 hours

Program: Spanish Crash Total Immersion Course - 30 Hours

Very impressed by the personal service we received in Bilbao. Instituto Hemingway takes the time to accommodate everyone’s needs in the group. Bilbao was safe and easy to navigate. Family stays were well organized. Instituto knows your name and is there for you in person on a daily basis to ask you what they can do for you!!! The teachers and guides were using Spanish at all times so that the students could improve their skills. Classes were authentic from cooking to taking a trip to the grocery store. I highly recommend this program and cannot wait to take my own students.

Learning how to make business in Spanish

Program: Business Spanish Course in Bilbao

I participated in a Business Spanish class in June 2016 at Instituto Hemingway in Bilbao, Spain, and I cannot begin to express my gratefulness for the quality, enthusiasm and professionalism of each of the instructors I was fortunate enough to learn from. The grammar lessons were outstanding and relevant and I thoroughly enjoyed our instructor's techniques for using skills we did have, to draw and build a foundation to learn everything about business in Spanish. The cultural lessons were extremely relevant to our visit....foods and shopping in the grocery store, money, visits to local companies, restaurant ordering, birthdays and unusual customs - such as gift giving/acceptance. The use of videos and the white board and role playing were perfect tools to learn the lessons and stay engage. I really could go on and on...I truly adored each instructor, their styles and enthusiastic persistence in making sure they shared information and helped in every way to encourage our learning and knowledge of the Spanish language and customs.

Learning Spanish for children was never so easy!

June 24, 2018by: Donald Sanchez - United States

Program: Spanish Courses for Children and Families

Instituto Hemingway was something which fell into my family's lap. We did not know what to expect and had never met anyone who had attended the school. I do believe this school gave me and my kids one of the most amazing Spanish learning experiences of our lives. This school experience in Bilbao started out as a "bucket lister" for me. In the end it was a life improving and changing experience for me and my two kids. My son, who is 10 years old and in 5th grade, gained not only amazing classroom experience, but also fantastic life experiences. He is a very easy going child and he soaked up the entire experience. Along with being able to make great projects in the class, he was able to go out into the city, go on the subways, take a certain amount of money and go on a shopping hunt. My daughter, who is 7 years old and in 2nd grade learned through art, puppets, play dough, and some city outings as well. I knew we were in a great school when her teacher would bring her back to me and she was smiling

Instituto Hemingway offers a very large selection of tutors. They give excellent information on each tutor. Setting us sessions is very easy. They give two reminders of when lesson are scheduled. They immediately follow up after each session to make sure that the lesson had no problems, and that you were satisfied with your lesson. Their charge is very reasonable.

Spanish teacher ELE course fantastic experience!

June 24, 2018by: Karin Engen - Germany

Program: Spanish Course for Teachers

5

I found the ELE teachers learning course very interesting and well structured. I knew practically nothing about the content and it has turned out to be very useful for me. I was particularly interested in everything related to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Also, I liked having to develop a teaching unit for a final project. Everything was well explained (the teacher explains everything very clearly) and tutorials have been adequate. I highly recommend it because it is useful for teaching Spanish as it consists of practice and real experiences rather than just theory."

I've been attending Instituto Hemingway for about one month on and off. It's been great to say the least. The classes are fun and engaging, the teacher I have is very energetic, and really puts you in a position to learn. I also think it's what you do outside of the classroom as well. The classes are fairly small, which is great for bonding with other students who are at the same level as you are. All of the staff is extremely welcoming and helpful. If you cancel a class 24 hours prior (for whatever reason), you won't lose the class. It's been great for me, a very good price, and I would encourage others to attend this school to help you on your journey to learn Spanish The apartment was great, it has everything we needed and more. We were 4 adults and the apartment was a comfortable size for us, the outside space was a lovely addition. Really good location, walking distance to all 'must see's' and lots of nice restaurants walking distance also. Jose was very helpful and was very quick to respond to messages, Alfredo who checked us in and out was also very friendly and helpful! Would definitely recommend. :)

I learned a lot about Spanish culture and food. I also got to travel to places I have always wanted to visit and have studied in the past. This was a great company, family feeling. This was a fun position to work as you meet new people every day from all over the world. Property was in great shape, management needed to make changes and did so to better serve guests. Great experience. property was restructuring the management levels which caused a little stress among staff but it was needed

I contacted Instituto Hemingway to help me find internship in Spain. Jose the Director was really quick, they contacted me in two days and they offered me five months internship in Bilbao. I accepted this offer and now after four months I am really happy with my internship, and I don't want to go back home anymore! Bilbao is beautiful city all year round, authentic, not disrupted by massive tourism. Really friendly customer service, they also have helped me with all my questions (travelling, accommodation etc.)

My experience at the Instituto Hemingway was great. Instituto Hemingway provided all of the necessary resources for us The School is very close to the city centre and the shared apartment they offered me was just 5 minutes far on foot from School in a nice medium-class area with all facilities. The lessons were held by professional teachers who were also helpful but fun. It was nice to be able to practice Spanish in a safe environment, where I was not embarrassed to make mistakes. All of my professors always spoke Spanish. Great atmosphere and fun classes! Classes were small and all the teachers had a good level of English which I found ideal for explaining when I was stuck. Every day the School offered extra curricular activities (e.g salsa lessons, wine tasting courses, tapas tours..) It was easy to make friends with people from all over the world and learn Spanish at the same time. They were also sensitive to the fact that we wanted to learn outside the classroom as well. They did a great job of integrating us into the local culture as much as possible. They always told us about festivals or holidays or things "we couldn't miss". They wanted us to feel part of the culture. Bilbao felt very safe. Although I took safety precautions, I never felt unsafe in the city. It was real Spain!! A great city undiscovered by massive tourism. Price wise. Highly recommended. Best inmersion experience I have ever had! Thank you Guada and Eli! Sois las mejores profes!

Spanish in Bilbao

Spanish 'gap year'

I had an alright experience with Instituto Hemmingway. I was supposed to be with them for a total of 3 months but ended up only staying for 6 weeks. This was due to the utter incompetence of the administration, very bad living situations and weak academics. It felt like the administration was constantly trying to get every last cent out of students and wouldn't listen to their complains in a reasonable matter, to me it seemed like the Institute was having financial troubles and was not being kind or helpful to their students in return. As for the living situation... I started out living with a host mom but after 3 weeks of constant carpenters entering the house all through the night, (I am an 18 year old girl and it didn't feel great to have 25 year old men at the house at 1am) not being able to enter the kitchen, and feeling like my host mom was taking advantage of my stay and was only hosting me for the money, I had to move out. I then moved into an apartment in the red light district of Bilbo (The only area the institute offers housing in) with 3 other roommates. While we all had tons of fun together the apartment was FAR from nice. The kitchen was covered in grease and mold, the dishwasher and shower barley worked and some of the rooms had multiple beds in them so the administration could just squeeze more people in. Also it was above a bar so sleeping was a bit of a challenge! Aside from the bad livening situations the academics were not great. I had signed up for the cooking immersion but was never offered an internship and only given cooking classes with a women who was far my senior (I had been told the program would be all students 18-24 and this women along with many others were way into their 30s and above). Even with this aside the Spanish portion of the classes is far from intensive or instructive. Each lesson is given VERY out of order and all from a textbook that was incredibly hard to follow and use on your own. In addition the class itself NEVER started on time and you had a 30min break each day, however all of these unused times still got factored into the 20 hours of 'intensive Spanish lessons' yet with all the breaks it ended up being more like 16 hours a week. All and all Instituto Hemmingway is not a program I would recommend, especially for a young person. There are a wealth of Spanish language programs and Instituto Hemmingway just is far from the best out there.

Teaching English in Spain: Thumbs up!!

October 27, 2015by: Shannon Cortes - London

Program: English Teaching Volunteer Program in Spain

I´m really glad I took part in the programme. I improved my Spanish so much whilst I was there, and made some incredible friends that will keep them in my memories. The internship in a city in Northern Spain was paid but not much. I earned a bit of money by teaching English in a family-run English School specially to School kids and young adults. This was perfect for me because I´m planning on becoming a teacher after I graduate. I shared a flat with a few foreign university students. We had a great time, lots of parties and we ended up being really good friends.

Jobs in Spain: Working at hotels through my paid internship in Spain

October 27, 2015by: Ole Solosenco - San Diego

Program: Affordable Internships in Spain

Hi there! I had the great opportunity to make my dreams true. My internship in Spain was in a little village on the Mediterranean sea. It was a top hotel. I learned how to manage a hotel by doing lots of different things: welcoming customers, allocating rooms for them waiting tables, tending bar, etc. I met a lot of young people coming from different countries in Europe and we had lots of fun together. Above all I enjoyed the friendly atmosphere I found there. The staff was young and dynamic and we had a good time. My priority was improving my Spanish and I got it. I also took 2 weeks of Spanish courses before going to the placement People at Instituto Hemingway were very helpful!!

I loved this program. It was a inmersion program combined with Spanish courses for 2 weeks at the beginning, before the placement. The location was perfect for me. It was a village with all kind of facilities, top hotel, nice staff, superb chefs and all in all a great atmosphere where I learnt all about Spanish cuisine.

Instituto Hemingway reviews

I really enjoyed my experience with Instituto Hemingway. They offered me jobs after taking 8 weeks with them. The price was a bit higher than expected. US$ does not help at this moment either but leisure activities were free too. The atmosphere was familiar and enjoyable and if I have to say something to improve is that there were many people from Europe but not from USA and other continents. I guess that the reason is that Bilbao is not very popular yet. Academics: If you really want to improve your Spanish this is the place for you. Small groups, great methodology and above all opportunities to meet other Spaniards and make friends there. Instituto Hemingway offers also the opportunity to find you jobs which I think not many Schools do it. Living Situation: My shared apartment was superb!! I really enjoyed the area and very close to Instituto Hemingway. There was WIFI and all kind of facilities including a cleaner once per week.

Studying abroad is a unique experience and every student has its own experience. None of them will be the same. My interest in traveling abroad was not just to explore the world, but to study the world. I was blessed enough to have been to Europe before, and my experiences there prior to studying in Spain helped open up my mind to a life there.

I honestly don't know where the idea of me studying abroad stemmed from. I just knew I wanted to learn Spanish in Spain. The first time I went abroad was the summer after my freshman year of college and I thank that trip for increasing my interest in the international world too. I couldn't believe how different another culture was from mine. I felt that there was always something to learn and someone to meet.

Growing up with various multicultural experiences led me to study abroad. I hosted a Spanish exchange student for a month, and she hosted me at her home with her family in Aguilar de Campoo, Spain. Additionally, during my Senior year of high school, my family and I hosted a Norwegian student.  After my first year of undergraduate studies, I volunteered in Ecuador for a Summer and during my Junior year, I studied abroad in Moldova and Russia. Upon graduation, I moved to Costa Rica and lived there for about two and half years.
