A Guide to Learning Chinese in Taiwan
Locations
Taiwan is a small island comprised of a population of 24 million people, with the majority of people living in the capital city of Taipei, located in the north of the Island.
Taipei has a population of approximately 7 million people and home of Taoyuan International Airport. Many Chinese Mandarin Institutes in Taiwan are located in Taipei City Centre. Taipei is a clean, modern, fun metropolis where you will find many talented Taiwanese teachers. Therefore, Taipei offers many private schools and universities Chinese language courses, with private schools offering more flexible, weekly starting dates on every Monday of the year for all levels.
Other cities that offer the opportunity to learn Chinese in Taiwan include Taichung or Kaohsiung, both of which are located south of Taipei and enjoy a warmer climate. However, due to the low international student intake in cities outside of Taipei, the flexibility of start dates and diversity of opportunities may not be as prevalent in these cities there.
Chinese Mandarin Programs in Taiwan
Since Mandarin Chinese is comprised of two different writing styles, the simplified method or traditional, it is important to choose a Chinese language school in Taiwan that suits your needs and goals.
Many university level Chinese language classes in Taiwan will use the traditional character writing method, which will not be useful for any non-beginner Mandarin students who may have studied simplified format before. There are, however, private institutes in Taiwan, mainly in Taipei, that focus their Chinese language classes on the simplified method and use pinying (the Romanization of Chinese characters). Furthermore, university Chinese language courses in Taiwan may focus a lot on writing of characters, whilst the private institutes will be more conversational based. It’s entirely up to you which method you prefer to learn in Taiwan.
Chinese Subtleties & Nuances in Taiwan
Mandarin Chinese has two different styles; simplified Chinese is used outside of Taiwan and traditional writing is used only within Taiwan. If you are a complete beginner, then it is always recommended that you choose a traditional format for your Chinese language courses in Taiwan, as this will allow you to recognize simplified characters as well.
If you are not new to learning Mandarin Chinese and have only studied simplified characters, then you will find it difficult to study traditional characters. Therefore, if you are choosing a Chinese language school in Taiwan, make sure that the school has a simplified curriculum.
Surprisingly, there are many advanced speakers of Chinese that cannot read or write characters. So, this is no problem for language learners in Taiwan, as some schools offer their entire course curriculum in the pinying system. This means you can continue to learn and progress whilst ignoring characters and using the pinying to read.
Benefits & Challenges
Taiwan has many benefits, including its course structure, high quality of teachers, and friendly people.
Smaller Class Sizes. Learning Chinese in Taiwan will usually entail taking courses in smaller class sizes, compared to what may be offered in mainland China. Class sizes at private language schools in Taiwan rarely rise above six students, which will allow you to have a more personalized experience.
Visa Free Entry. Unlike most other Asian countries, Taiwan actively takes part in the three month tourist visa exemption. This means that many visitors, from over 100 countries, can arrive in Taiwan without having to obtain a visa. The majority of Chinese language learners are, therefore, visa exempt for up to three months (which is equivalent to one term). For long-term Chinese language programs in Taiwan, students from certain countries are able to obtain a visa extension easily, or simply leave the country (there are low cost one hour flights to neighboring countries in the region) and re-enter to receive a new three month visa.
Living Costs. While Taiwan boosts a modern economy, it is considered a rich county. Tuition costs and home rentals are average priced (aka not considered low costs). Food and eating out is extremely cheap in Taiwan, however, so this usually offsets the higher accommodation costs and tuition rates.
Accommodation. The main challenge for students who choose to learn Chinese in Taiwan tend to be felt within the realm of accommodation. When it comes to homestay opportunities, Taiwanese families do not commonly offer up spare bedrooms within their homes for foreigners; this is due to the culture of Taiwan, where many kids live with their parents until they are in their mid-30s. In addition to this, unlike other countries that are popular for language learning, homestays are not really an accepted cultural practice.
However, homestays can be found, if students are willing to travel up to an hour from neighboring suburbs of Taipei, where local families tend to live in larger houses more suitable for homestay accommodation, rather than a typical small apartment in Taipei. Many Chinese language programs in Taiwan, specifically those located in Taipei, offer student accommodation located on campus or nearby to the institution. Lastly, short-term accommodation is readily available in Taipei and can be found for approximately $30 per night.

Wonderful language program!
September 02, 2026by: Lisa Ku - United StatesLTL school has been an amazing organization. We have sent both of our kids to this program, 3 years apart, and their experience was exceptional. Riona Chen was great to work with, and this year our youngest daughter’s teacher Juju, was a delight. The homestay experience was also incredible. They stayed with Liz Hu and family and had an equally memorable and fun time. I was very impressed that all of the teachers and everyone involved with the program remembered us 3 years later! Thank you for being such a great program!
Sending both kids three years apart and the whole team remembering you, we could not be prouder of that! Juju, Riona and Liz Hu will all be so happy to hear this. Thanks so much for your continued trust in LTL and we hope to see the family again soon! LTL Team
Fun and flexible 2 weeks of 1-on-1 classes and live experience
September 01, 2026by: 真真 Heider - GermanyMy experience with LTL has been great: fun, flexible and unforgettable. As a Chinese heritage speaker I went looking for a school that would offer an individualised learning experience with “live-action“ support in Taipei, and from the start LTL‘s team were attuned to my needs and wishes. My student advisor Josephine answered each and every one of my questions in detail, and she followed up with a structured plan within a few days. I decided on 1-on-1 classes for 2 weeks with 20 classes per week, 50% of them being safari classes, and the connection kit. Safari classes are outings into Taipei i.e. store or museum visits that are accompanied by your language teacher to give you real-life Mandarin speaking experience. The connection kit meant that I was set up with a Mandarin-speaker in Taipei to go out with. The online onboarding couldn‘t have run more smoothly thanks to highly detailed enquiries, to an online placement test and to a video call with Alin to get a feel for my actual speaking level and to answer any eventual questions I might have had before coming to Taipei. Additionally, LTL provided detailed guides on how to get through the airport and into the city itself, and they added me to the Line student group in advance. That way if I had had any questions I could have asked LTL Taipei‘s team any time. On my first day at LTL my teacher Issa took great care to check in with what I wanted to focus on including my interests for the safari classes. She then drew up a plan for both our textbook Chinese lessons and potential outings. I appreciate her gentle and flexible approach that encouraged me while being very clear on the areas that I needed to improve, in my case mostly the tones. She offered consistent corrective feedback on my intonation and introduced me to a method to acquire a more natural pronunciation. In the first week we focused more on the textbook lessons in MTU’s ”A Course in Contemporary Chinese“ to give me a starting point. At the same time Issa left plenty of room to go on tangents related to my stay in Taipei. I felt very well guided, though the pace was high with 20+ new vocabulary per day and short reviews. In the second week we focused more on Safari classes with pre-scheduled outings to a bubble tea shop, to the stationer‘s, to a day market, to a post office and to a tea house among others. Issa went above and beyond to prepare me for these outdoor assignments with individualised vocabulary lists and example dialogues. She also provided rich insights into Taiwan‘s everyday life and plenty of suggestions for places to visit and foods to try. While I felt quite a nervous to speak to shopkeepers with my basic Chinese skills Issa‘s support helped me to build up my confidence to go out to apply my Chinese even after the language classes were over. In addition to all these intensive classes the team at LTL Taipei made my stay unforgettable by organising frequent and diverse social events i.e. almost daily lunch outings, creative Taiwanese craft workshops, a museum visit, a KTV night, a Mahjong afternoon, etc. A shout-out to Sunny! Her infectious enthusiasm and inventiveness made my stay at LTL unforgettable. Plus other teachers and staff would join some of these events and even expand them at times. So even though I had 1-on-1 classes I still got to connect to other students every day. My only hiccup was related to the connection kit when my original partner became unavailable, but Riona and Sunny resolved it within 2 days‘s time. The administration at LTL Taipei is flawless! I can‘t recommend LTL Taipei enough! They provide such a comprehensive experience way beyond just language classes! So if you consider attending, make sure to leave enough room in your schedule to enjoy the full experience. Taipei‘s team guarantees that you will Live The Language!
This is super nice to read!! Bubble tea shops, day markets, post offices and a tea house all in Mandarin and with Issa by your side! We are thrilled the safari classes and social events made your two weeks so memorable, and Josephine, Alin, Sunny and Riona will all love reading this. Thanks so much for taking the time to share such a detailed review and keep up the great work studying Mandarin! LTL Team
A truly amazing experience
August 31, 2026by: Luyi Peng - AustriaThis is my fourth summer studying at LTL Language School in Taipei, and each experience has been truly amazing. All of the teachers—including Sissy, Kate, Tammy Xu, Anqi and Francine, whom I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know—are incredibly dedicated and supportive, and they have helped me make great progress in my language skills. Although I don’t have many opportunities to practise during the rest of the year, I notice a clear improvement every time I return to LTL. It’s a wonderful place to learn, grow, and stay motivated! The class levels are well organised and I always felt well in my group. If your own language level doesn’t match that of the class, you can easily switch to a different level. The admin staff – Sunny, Riona and Alin – are very friendly and help with every little thing. This starts right from the preparation for the summer course. The social events are brilliant and give you the chance to get to know both Taiwanese culture and the other students better. Would I recommend the LTL School? ABSOLUTELY...
Four summers in a row is just wonderful, Luyi! We could not ask for a better endorsement than that :) Sissy, Kate, Tammy, Anqi, Francine, Sunny, Riona and Alin are all going to love reading this. Thanks so much for taking the time and keep up the great work studying Mandarin. We cannot wait to see you back for summer five! LTL Team
A great way to learn Chinese in Taipei
August 09, 2026by: Jerry K - GermanyI spent six weeks at LTL Taipei taking a 1-on-1 Chinese course. From the beginning, everything was easy and well organized. Communication before my arrival was smooth, the classes were great, and there were plenty of activities outside of class. Even though I had 1-on-1 lessons, I still got to know other students and teachers quite easily. The atmosphere at the school is very friendly and relaxed. There are many international students speaking English, and many people in Taipei speak good English as well. But if you make an effort to meet locals and use Chinese in everyday life, there are still plenty of opportunities to practice. Taipei itself is also a great city to study in—very convenient, easy to get around, and there’s always something to do. Just be prepared for the VERY hot and rainy weather in June/July! I had Jessica 老師 as my teacher, and she quickly understood my level and asked what I wanted to achieve. Although I had learned Simplified Chinese before, that wasn’t a problem at all. LTL Taipei teaches both Simplified and Traditional Chinese, and I got used to Traditional much faster than I expected. Since my main goal was to refresh my Chinese and improve my speaking, Jessica adapted the lessons to me instead of just following the textbook. From day one, we spoke almost entirely in Chinese, which helped a lot with my listening and speaking. I had classes every morning from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., but I never felt overwhelmed and the four hours always went by surprisingly quickly. Jessica was also very kind and supportive—she even brought me breakfast a few times! After six weeks, I could really feel that my Chinese had improved. There were different activities every week, such as Mahjong, karaoke, museums, cultural activities, and group lunches near the school. Sunny and Riona put so much effort into organizing everything. They were always friendly and approachable, and they definitely made the course more enjoyable! Alin organized my classes and found a teacher who was a really good match for me. Greta was also very helpful before and during my stay. I had some issues with my original homestay arrangement, and she took my concerns seriously and really tried to help find a solution, which I appreciated a lot. The only thing I think could be improved is the homestay program. From my own experience and from talking to other students, the quality of host families seems to vary quite a bit. It would be helpful to have more consistent standards regarding things like cleanliness, distance from the school, and how involved the host family is. I also think it would be better to get information about the homestay earlier. Considering the price, renting a private room or apartment nearby can sometimes be a better option. Of course, I’m sure there are also many great host families—it may just depend a little on luck. Overall, I’d definitely recommend LTL Taipei to anyone thinking about studying Chinese in Taiwan. I learned a lot in six weeks, met some really nice people, and had a great time. If I come back to Taipei, I’d definitely consider taking another course at LTL.
Thanks for your kind words and feedback Jerry! We're so pleased you had a great 6 weeks with us in Taipei :) Hope you keep pushing forward with your Chinese. Come back and visit us soon!! LTL Team
My 4th and the best Chinese immersion
August 07, 2026by: Marieke Jansen - NetherlandsProgram: Immersive Learning: Homestay with Professional Teachers
I've had an exceptionally good stay in Dalian with Teacher Li N. She was truly an excellent teacher and had prepared everything perfectly. Also, her family (mother and son) were really nice and welcoming! I highly recommend her as a teacher and as a homestay. I can’t praise her enough! This is my 4th one week of Chinese immersion in the last 2 years, and this experience has been really the best!
LTL Taipei is where it's at!
June 26, 2026by: JT G - United StatesI've had a wonderful three weeks here at LTL Taipei. They are very organized, the teachers are all skilled and enthusiastic, and the non-teaching staff (particularly Riona and Sunny) do such a great job creating a community out of a group of students from a diverse array of backgrounds and Chinese ability levels (organized lunches and cultural excursions/activities every week!!). I really might come back next year! I started off in a group class for one week and switched to 1-on-1 for the latter two, and I'm grateful LTL was flexible with me on this. This is a company, not a university, so there aren't any exams or a rigid pace. This is both good and bad; it means they're way more flexible with adult learners' schedules and the atmosphere is welcoming and non-stressful, but it also means students aren't as disciplined and the teachers are accustomed to giving very little homework, which means slow language progress. For motivated students I strongly recommend the 1-on-1 classes so that you can go at the fastest pace that feels comfortable to you; I would only recommend the group classes for complete beginners or those okay with a very slow pace.
We are thrilled Riona, Sunny and the whole Taipei team made such a great impression and we will make sure they see your kind words! Thanks so much for taking the time to write such an honest and balanced review, feedback like this genuinely helps us improve. Keep up the great work studying Mandarin and we really hope to see you back next year! LTL Team
A completely new way of knowing life
June 15, 2026by: Hansa Mirpuri - IndiaProgram: Immersive Learning: Homestay with Professional Teachers
What I loved most about this programme was the unique experience of immersing myself in a different culture, livelihood, and language, which offered me a completely new way of knowing life. Simply by staying with a host family, I learned so much about the culture through the daily habits and wisdom shared by the community. I was made to feel extremely comfortable and treated with such pure kindness, which is why I would highly recommend Lingoinn to anyone looking to expand their horizons.
A great experience
June 15, 2026by: Nadine Blaettler - SwitzerlandProgram: Immersive Learning: Homestay with Professional Teachers
My stay in Taiwan was a great experience. The first time in my life I spoke Chinese for hours. It was great to see into two very different families and be part of their daily life, eat tasty meals and try new dishes which I never ate before. I feel I could really improve my listening and speaking skills and also got thaught some new valuable methods about how to study. From the first day when I wrote to Lingoinn everything went smooth, I can really recommend it.
Remarkable progress after 1 week
May 19, 2026by: Andy Magee - United StatesProgram: Immersive Learning: Homestay with Professional Teachers
I stayed at a teacher’s home in Taiwan for one week. My teacher was very kind, and her family was warm and friendly. I only spoke Chinese while staying there, and my progress has been remarkable after just one week. The most enriching part was the fact that we were just immersed in Chinese when we weren't in lessons. I would definitely recommend a homestay for my friends.
Personalized program
April 07, 2026by: Mark White - United StatesProgram: Immersive Learning: Homestay with Professional Teachers
My trip to Taiwan was great. I also spent a week in Yilan studying Chinese. The personalized program was extremely helpful, and my vegetarian dietary requirements were fully accommodated. Thank you for everything.
Two weeks at LTL Taipei
March 12, 2026by: Jan Lo - GermanyI’ve been at LTL Language School in Taipei for two weeks and can wholeheartedly recommend it. Right from the start preparation and booking went smoothly and I was sorted into the right level for my Chinese proficiency- thanks to Greta, Riona and Alin. They offer different classes, optional accommodation and a few extras. I chose group class (4h) in the morning and one-on-one lessons in the afternoon (2h). Overall this was pretty intense and one could consider either reducing the hours or making it more playful with their safari classes where your teacher takes you to different places in the city. However, I learned a lot in my six hours per day and both my teachers Anqi and Vivian made sure that the lessons fit to my level. They really made it fun and engaging and encouraged interaction and conversation. The one-on-one classes were a great place to review specific grammar that I struggled with and to further practice talking and listening. I usually joined the lunch group - Riona took us to several restaurants and helped with ordering the right food. The school also offers different optional activities like Mahjong, traditional pottery or cooking. If you can, I would recommend staying for at least a month to really benefit from the immersion.

Thanks for your lovely words, Jan. We're truly delighted you had a great two weeks in Taipei with us :) We saw you made great progress in a short amount of time and would love to see you continue! Best wishes, LTL Team
A wonder week

I had a wonderful week in Shenzhen. My teacher and her family were extremely accommodating, and I couldn’t thank them enough. I also learned a lot, both Mandarin and Cantonese. For anyone looking for a shortcut to improve their Chinese, I recommend this programme.

Good homestay
February 17, 2026by: Giulia Breida - ItalyProgram: Immersive Learning: Homestay with Professional Teachers
My homestay was very good. I had the opportunity to speak a lot and practice my spoken language, Chinese. The lesson quality was high and also the high level that I needed to learn. So, we went very fast so that I could learn more and more. Lingoinn really was very good in organising everything. I didn't have any trouble. Everything was clear before, during, and after the trip. So I think the service was very, very good.
Dear Giulia, thank you so much for sharing your experience. We're pleased that you've enjoyed your homestay in Chongqing and have improved your Chinese. We wish you all the best.
Incredibly fun and engaging
December 22, 2025by: Claudia Campbell-Pitt - United KingdomProgram: Immersive Learning: Homestay with Professional Teachers
My 4-week full-immersion experience in Taiwan has been incredibly fun and engaging. It has vastly improved my Chinese language skills through all areas, but especially through my speaking. I am now able to converse at a more confident level than I was able to when I arrived. I found Lingoinn to be very organised and supportive of me throughout the whole process. The information I received before travelling was very clear and helpful, allowing me to feel comfortable throughout my entire journey.
Dear Claudia, thank you so much for sharing your experience. We're pleased that you've had a great time in Taiwan and have become a more confident Mandarin speaker. We wish you all the best.
My Taiwanese culture immersion
December 06, 2025by: Selmann Durand - FranceIt has been now four weeks that I started to learn Chinese with LTL Taipei and this is an incredible experience and adventure that offers me to meet new people from all around the world as well as discovering the Taiwanese culture throughout many different activities and lunch with other students. And at the same time The school found a homestay for me and I’m leaving with an old Taiwanese couple that allows me to practice my language skills every day. I strongly recommend for anyone who would like to leave an immersive experience in another culture, as well as intensely learning a new language !!!!
We're so glad you are having an incredible experience with us Selmann! It's a pleasure to have you in Taipei with us and we hope you continue studying hard! Best wishes, LTL Team
VIP Homestay near Cangyan Suspended Temple
November 30, 2025by: Kelly JonesProgram: Immersive Learning: Homestay with Professional Teachers
LingoInn run a 50% discount scholarship twice a year and in 2023, I won! With only a few months to prepare for the trip, I was nervous as a first-time solo traveller to China (my partner and mother told me not to go). However, LingoInn answered my questions patiently and kindly, and I over-prepared (big-time). As it turned out, everything went really well. My teacher, Wang Laoshi 王老师, met me at Shijiazhuang train station the night I arrived, and from then on, I was treated as her VIP guest. Everything was taken care of, with humour, patience and kindness. For instance, I had an unexpected, horrid toothache develop a few days into the homestay, that my travel insurance would cover (actually, it only cost $5 AUD so the insurance wasn't needed), but 王老师 herself took me to the dentist and acted as interpreter. She also coped beautifully with my liquids and soft foods diet when making all the meals (part of the homestay fee), took me to a pharmacist, and reassured me when I felt ashamed of my wussiness (I've heard Chinese people go without anaesthetic during childbirth!). As I settled in and my nerves eased, I began to enjoy myself. One of the two big reasons that I selected 王老师 was because I had a photo on my bedroom wall at home, of a beautiful temple suspended on an ancient bridge in a chasm. It turned out to be part of the Cangyan Shan temple complex --- near Shijiazhuang! We had a full-day tour walking around the mountain (lots of exercise) and her husband was chaffeur. The other reason was that she teaches 古琴 guqin, an ancient, beautiful, 7-stringed horizontally-played zither. I had three guqin lessons, besides daily Chinese lessons for three hours a day. When I had enough of study, we did 八段锦 baduanjin (a kind of tai qi) or took her mini German Shepherd, 老连 Lao Lian, for walks around the gated apartment community. 刘先生 Liu Xiansheng, her husband, also showed me gongfu cha, which is another passion of mine. It was, in summary, a wonderful experience, and a great way for a nervous first-time visitor to experience China.
An unforgettable experience
November 22, 2025by: Liz Syed - United KingdomProgram: Immersive Learning: Homestay with Professional Teachers
My week in Chengdu was an unforgettable experience. Being immersed in the Mandarin language, staying with a lovely host family and an amazing teacher, and learning so much about the culture at the same time, it was a fantastic way to improve my language skills. I would recommend this unique experience to anyone who is interested in improving their Mandarin - as a language teacher myself, I know how valuable this is, and the team at Lingoinn make the whole thing extremely smooth and stress-free. I’ll definitely be doing it again before too long!
Dear Liz, thank you so much for your feedback. As a fellow language teacher, your positive reflections on your immersion experience mean a great deal to us. We look forward to welcoming you back to our programme in the near future.
Great immersive experience
November 06, 2025by: Kyle McBride - United StatesProgram: Immersive Learning: Homestay with Professional Teachers
One of my favourite things to do in life is connect and meet with different people. This experience provided all of that and much more. My teachers helped immensely with understanding the culture and being able to fully immerse myself within Taiwan.
Dear Kyle, thank you so much for your feedback. We're pleased that you had a great immersive experience in Taiwan, and your teachers helped you understand the culture. We wish you all the best.
Awesome intense Mandarin class in Taipei
November 01, 2025by: Nico Bähr - GermanyIt was a great decision to spend my educational leave (Bildungsurlaub) at the LTL language school in Taipei. Here are the reasons: + very professional teachers (mine were Tammy, Francine, Yunni and Wolfgang) who + explained grammar and new vocabulary (and its differences to similar words) very understandably; + explained everything in Chinese (at my B1-Level course) which let me immerse myself into the language very well; + are proficient in English so that they can offer English translations, if necessary; - one teacher‘s pronounciation was a little bit unclear and another‘s Chinese characters’ handwriting sometimes a bit difficult to read; + the teachers adjusted the class content to my personal needs (e.g. not only sticking to the book but also taught me other vocabulary when I said that I would like to learn more about a certain other topic); + created an open learning environment that never made me feel bad when I couldn’t pronounce a word correctly or so; + only gave few homework; - once a teacher mixed up the schedule and came half an hour too late, but > + she made up for it by offering another additional class time; + in general, the teachers rather taught a few minutes longer than shorter, so in total I might have had more than one free extra hour of classes. Besides, there are additional reasons, why I recommend LTL in Taipei: + opportunity to book a course for only one week and different amounts of class hours, group and/or single classes makes LTL very flexible; / 6 hours per day is veeery intensive, next time I might switch to four hours per day; + nevertheless, the mix of group classes and private classes was awesome; + very small groups (in my group class was only one other student); - ca. 750€ per week is quite a lot of money (but worth it); + very helpful staff (e.g. Alin, always there for questions); + organised community events (such as a very fun Lasertag evening with teacher Alice and daily lunches with lovely Riona); + workshops about Chinese/Taiwanese culture (e.g. Mahjong with teacher Tammy). Recommended!

Love to hear it, Nico :) We're delighted you've had a great couple of weeks with us in Taipei. Really happy you enjoyed all the activities too. Come back again some time. LTL Team

There are many events organized by the school throughout the week which let you interact with other teachers and students from other levels. I highly recommend this program if you are willing to immerse yourself in the language and culture.
Thanks for your lovely review, Aljandro! We're delighted to hear you've had a great experience in Taipei with us :) Hope to see you come back again! LTL Team
